A business-related dinner and charity-related gala coming up fast by Christopher Cornell ADVANTAGE EDITOR

The holidays are over, so the fun is over, right? Wrong! Two parties are coming up next week: One a great networking and business opportunity, the other a great chance to help out a hard-working community organization. • The Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce will host its 11th annual Celebrating Progress dinner Thursday, Jan. 28 at Genetti Manor in Dickson City. According to Executive Director Laure Carlo, the program will have three guest speakers: • Bill Fontana, Executive Director of the PA Downtown Center, who will discuss revitalization for business districts and surrounding residential communities. • Michael Hass, a landscape architect, who will give a presentattion on the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority’s proposed Carbondale River Walk Project. • Brian Ebersole senior vice president of mission delivery at the Wright Center, who will discuss community health care and its impact on our area. “We choose thought-provoking speakers that will leave our guests informed about future projects and plant seeds to expand their own businesses,” Carlo noted. In addition, Carlo said, chamber members Capra Collina Winery, Frank’s Place, Lapera-Taylor Development, N.E.I.C., Olyphant Self Storage and Pleasant Mount Welding will be recognized for their contribution to the business community. “A number of years ago, the chamber decided to acknowledge the business owners who were investing in expansion of their businesses, and that is how the Celebrating Progress Dinner was born,” she explained. “The first dinner was at the Crystal Lake Hotel and had 37 people in attendance as

Tickets are $75; proceeds will go to Leader Dog for the Blind. Created five years ago, planning for the ball began in August, said Crystal Vladika, the chair for the event. “We have been planning even though the commitee was told its too early,” she said. “We started an event page on Facebook, sent out savethe-date cards and started our mailings to our businesses, corporate sponsors and of course community awareness. The cocktail hour musician Bob Manento, The band Blush and our photographer Zak Zavada needed to be booked.”

Vladika said Leader Dogs for the Blind was chosen as the recipient of the proceeds because “the mission of the organization is to empower people who are blind or visually impaired with lifelong skills and independent travel.” In addition to the entertainment, Vladika promises an assortment of hors d’oeuvres chefinspired food stations and an open bar. “Plus there will also be amazing baskets to try your luck,” she said. This year’s sponsors are A&A Pizza, Century Dental, The Cleansers, Fidelity Bank, the Greek Catholic Union, Joyce Electric, Northeast Eye Institute, N&N Drilling, Rogan Law, Vladika Insurance and the Wright Center Last year, the community, attendees and corporate sponsors raised $15,000.
