East Stroudsburg University’s Madelon Powers Gallery will present “The Sinking of the General Slocum,” an exhibit of paintings by Cindy Vojnovic, from Sept. 5-29. Her paintings evoke a nearly forgotten New York City maritime disaster — the 1904 burning and sinking of the steamboat that killed more than 1,000 people.

“I was astounded that such a huge disaster has so completely vanished from the public memory, even in New York City where it happened,” said Vojnovic, who began researching the disaster in 1987.

The excursion boat General Slocum had been chartered by a German-American Sunday School group for an end-of-

the-school-year picnic when it caught fire in New York’s East River.

Though the steamer had passed fire inspections, the crew had never practiced a fire drill and the rotted fire hoses fell apart when the crew tried to use them.

Few of the passengers — mostly citydwelling women and children — knew how to swim, and the sub-standard life preservers caused people who used them to sink faster.

“The General Slocum Disaster ... was entirely the result of human error, corruption and greed,” Vojnovic added. “For many years I have wanted to do artwork based on the event that could reach people in a different way than an historical text or illustration.”

A reception for Vojnovic will be held Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 4-6 p.m. in the gallery. Both the exhibit and reception are open to the public at no cost. Hours for the gallery, located in the university’s Fine & Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Vojnovic is supervisor of East Stroudsburg University’s Graphics Center. She also is an adjunct professor at Northampton Community College and a member of Arts Community of Easton.

The presentation will look at a unique society that evolved from the logging railroads of Pennsylvania in the 1800s. Adopting the nickname “wood hicks,” the loggers fed the specialized trains that are unknown today. Forester Dick Cary will share unique logging photos, including images of the specialized locomotives and trains, logging camps, loggers, their cabins and families, most of which are extinct today. The France that dominates wine drinkers’ consciousness tends to be that of Burgundy and Bordeaux, then maybe Champagne and Rhône — regions that have provided models for the rest of the wine-producing world.

France brims with other wine regions producing unique wines, made from little-known grapes.

The French people support their indigenous wine industry to be sure. But even they don’t — on a daily basis — drink the expensive wines from those vaunted regions.

Some of these regions, mostly in the south of France are often referred to as “wine lakes,” and they used to be known for overproduction and poor quality. The European Union and the French have a series of vine-pull schemes to reduce the volume of bulk wines. Those that remain are of better quality and often result in a great deal. I picked up a few summer-appropriate whites from also-ran regions of France and they were outstanding — and inexpensive.

A perennial favorite is Francois Lurton “Melody” Cotes de Gascogne Gros Manseng and Sauvignon with a generous fruitfulness of apple and kiwi with a strong tart acidity. $12. HHHH. The French call sauvignon blanc simply “sauvignon,” as you’ll find with many sauvignon blanc from the terribly underrated and diverse wine region of the Loire Valley. Loire is the homeland of sauvignon blanc, the sub region of Sancerre is just the best-known. New Zealand took the sauvignon blanc ball and now it is an international variety. Beyond Sancerre are scores of other satellite areas that produce lovely and affordable sauvignon blanc. Touraine is one you may see.

De Neuville Sauvignon Blanc Loire Valley 2015 holds nothing back from today’s sauvignon blanc fans. Fresh with a rich mouthfeel and flavors of green apples with a lime and herbal edge. $12. HHHH. Loire’s has two other great whites: chen-

in blanc that range from dry to sweet and the minerally, lean Muscadet. The region of Muscadet is at the mouth of Loire, near the Atlantic and its soils and oceanic winds are thought to show a saltiness in the wine that makes it a perfect pairing for oysters and a good pairing for a range of seafoods. The wines are made from a little-known grape known as melon (pronounced mel-OWN).

It has historic roots in the region, but as a grape doesn’t have much to offer in terms of fruit flavor, or any flavor. I don’t mind the fruitless ones that can taste like a salt and iodine sourball, but pair so well with shellfish. Muscadet can be an acquired taste. Cutting-edge cellar techniques are making Muscadet more accessible.

2017 Chevy Trax Entry Price: $21,000 Price as Tested: $26,290 This week, we’re behind the wheel of the 2017 Chevy Trax Premier, introduced in 2015 and the first Chevy compact SUV/Crossover since 1989. Back then, the Chevy/GEO/Suzuki “Tracker” roamed the nation’s highways, and it was a popular mini SUV thanks to low entry price, smaller dimensions and driving fun factor.

New for 2017 are redesigned front grille, headlights and rear enhancements. There’s also a second USB port and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto availability for smart phone owners.

Our tester came in top-line Premier trim with front-drive mechanicals, although Chevy offers an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option for the off-road fans. The entry Trax LS starts at $21,000, while mid-class LT begins at $22,900 and our top-line Premier starts at $26,100. The AWD option adds another $1,500 to the price, and is available on all three models. The entry LS at $21,000 offers great a value for those who need an SUV yet are working on a tight budget.

Built on the same platform in South Korea responsible for the Buick Encore (a China consumer favorite), Trax is similar in dimensions and mechanicals but less luxurious.

Thus, consumers working on a budget can save thousands if they decide to go with the Chevy model instead of upscale Buick. Out on the highway, the 2017 Chevy Trax is a decent performer, albeit no one single handling element is outstanding or overly impressive.

If the road is smooth, Trax is smooth. If it’s bumpy, Trax is bumpy. Overall, however, it’s a well-built little SUV that does everything in an acceptable manner.

Chevy Trax relies on one proven powertrain across the line, namely the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 138 horses and 148 lb. ft. of torque.

Power transfers via a six-speed Hydramatic transmission and, thanks to the turbocharger, our little Trax felt more like 170 horsepower when the turbocharger force feeds the engine with a more combustible mixture of air and fuel. As RPMs rise and the turbo begins to work, you’ll be surprised how just 138 horses can zoom you forward. Although Trax will never win a speed acceleration contest or impress a Camaro ZL1 or Corvette enthusiast, you’ll still be able to merge on a 65-MPH freeway or pass on a two-lane road easily. Fuel mileage is decent as 2WD owners can expect 25 city and 33 highway while the AWD crowd will appreciate 24 and 30, respectively.

Inside, Trax’s cabin includes comfortable seating, six cupholders, nine storage bins and a two tier glove box that now features two USB connectors and an auxiliary jack.

Standard fare includes remote keyless entry, OnStar 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, MyLink seveninch color touchscreen, AM/FM Stereo and SiriusXM Satellite with Bluetooth. Add power windows and door locks, tilt and telescopic, air conditioning, cruise and much more, and you have a well equipped little SUV that is sure to please.

One area where Trax excels is safety. Prospective consumers will find four- and fivestar government crash ratings as all models come with a rear safety camera, rear defogger, traction and stability control, four-wheel ABS brakes and 10 air bags.

Our tester came with upscale standard features that cost extra on the lower price models. Included are a Bose premium sound system, six-way power driver seat, deluxe cloth and leatherette seating, leather wrap steering wheel and rear park assist that helps in parallel situations. Our Trax Premier also features 18-inch tires on aluminum wheels and daytime running lamps, while the entry LS comes with 16 inch tires and no daytime running lamps.

Highly recommended is a Premier Driver Confidence II Package, which, for just $295 more, gives you a forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning system, both unavailable on the LS. Important numbers include a wheelbase of 100.6 inches, 2,835 curb weight, 35.5 turning circle, from 18.7 to 48.4 cu. ft. of cargo space, 14-gallon fuel tank and 6.2-inch ground clearance. Our tester’s final tally, including $895 delivery, came to $26,290 which includes a special Chevy incentive discount of $1,000.

Chevy Trax is an easy to drive, multifunctional small SUV that serves well as a passenger mover or an AWD off-road partner. Based on entry price, mechanicals and the excellent safety ratings, Chevy Trax is worth a test drive. However, if you plan to spend $27,500 or more for a Chevy Trax and taking return-on-investment into the purchase calculation, my recommendation is to consider a move up to a Chevy Equinox, which starts at $23,850.

Likes: Nice design, roomy interior, turbo power, safety ratings.

Dislikes: Some safety features not available on LS, ride a bit bumpy on secondary roads.

Labor Day is over, so the fall season is now approaching. Here are some great recipes your family will love, and they are relatively quick and easy to make. Enjoy.

ASPARAGUS-TOMATO SOUP (Requested by one of our readers. Give this soup a try.)

1-1/2 cups cooked asparagus 5 cups chicken stock 1 medium onion, chopped 1 carrot, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 1 bay leaf 2 cups canned tomatoes 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1 teaspoon salt Pinch of ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon sugar 2 tablespoon butter, melted 2 tablespoon flour 1 tablespoon sour cream + 1/2 teaspoon minced chives, for garnish Combine all soup ingredients, except butter and flour. Cover and simmer 45 minutes. Whirl in food processor or blender until fairly smooth. This may need to be done in 2 to 3 batches. Return to pot over low heat. Blend butter and flour together. Stir into soup. Simmer 20 to 30 minutes. Garnish as suggested. Yield: 6 to 10 servings.

STUFFED BUTTERNUT SQUASH 4 small butternut squash 1 pound mild Italian sausage 1 teaspoon rubbed sage 1 cup soft bread crumbs 2 cups Monterey Jack cheese, shredded 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded Preheat oven to 350°. Rinse squash with water and blot dry with paper towel. Cut each squash in half length-wise; scoop out seeds. Place squash cut side down in a baking dish and add approximately 1/2inch water. Bake until squash is tender, approximately 45 to 50 minutes. Gently scrape the squash flesh out of the shell; do not cut through the skin. Chop squash into small pieces; set aside. In a large skillet, brown sausage and drain excess fat.

Return the sausage to the skillet and stir in sausage, bread crumbs, and Monterey Jack cheese. Remove from stove and stuff the sausage mixture into 6 of the squash halves. Return the stuffed squash halves to the baking dish; top with the Parmesan cheese and bake until heated through and cheese on top is melted, about 20 to 30 minutes. Yields: 6 servings.

CHICKEN FRIED STEAK WITH CREAM GRAVY 2 pounds boneless round steak 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 3/4 teaspoon garlic salt POTATO MUFFINS 2 eggs (Great served with the asparagus-toma1/4 cup milk to soup.)

Olive oil 2 egg yolks For Cream Gravy: 3 cups grated potatoes, drained 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 4 large tablespoons onion, grated 1/4 cup pan drippings 1/2 cup sifted flour 2-1/2 to 3 cups milk 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Dash black pepper 3 tablespoons butter, melted To prepare steak: Trim excess fat from 2 egg whites, stiffly beaten steak. Pound steak to 1/4-inch thickness, Beat egg yolks, then stir in drained, using a meat mallet. Cut into serving-size grated potatoes. Add onion, flour, salt, pieces. • At 777 acres, Paradise-Price Preserve is fairly big and a relatively new conserved area. This summer, a crew from Paradise Township has cleared and blazed trails there, including a five-mile round-trip path to the falls at Brodhead Creek. On Saturday, Sept.

23, hike leader Carol Hillestad will show the way. Another, shorter hike (one that doesn’t

reach the falls) will be held Sunday, Sept.

Terrain varies from an old fire road through cool glens, along a flat ridgetop, to a wide and well-marked trail. The open woods become large wetlands, and then the trail turns rocky. The effort is worth it, though, as the scenery opens up to Brodhead Creek below, with a low horseshoe waterfall tumbling over ledges of bedrock. The Saturday hike begins at 10 a.m. Meet at Paradise-Price Preserve, Henry’s Crossing Road.
