At the recent United Way of Monroe County annual meeting breakfast, the United Way of Monroe County presented its Mattioli Philanthropy Award (organization recipient) to Sanofi Pasteur and the Sanofi Foundation for North America. The Mattioli Philanthropy Award recognizes an organization and/or individual that has provided exemplary benevolence, goodwill, leadership and generosity of time, talent and treasure to Monroe County.

Sanofi Pasteur and the Sanofi Foundation for North America were selected in recognition for their commitment to the United Way of Monroe County, as well as the larger United Way movement. Ellyn Schindler, director, Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Engagement, accepted the award on behalf of the company and the Foundation/Sanofi Corporate Responsibility North America.

Specifically, Sanofi Pasteur — together

with its employees — has been the largest contributor to the United Way’s annual campaign for more than a decade. In 2014, employee donations, supplemented by a dollar-for-dollar-match by Sanofi Pasteur and the Sanofi Foundation for North America, resulted in a record-breaking company campaign, with $283,167 credited specifically for the United Way of Monroe County.

To complement this ongoing financial support, Sanofi Pasteur and its employees — including its senior leadership — also contribute to the United Way of Monroe County through volunteerism and participation on several of the United Way’s local boards and committees. In particular, Dale Parisi, vice president of human resources, commercial operations, vaccines, Americas, has served as a member of the United Way of Monroe County’s board of directors for more than 13 years. The company’s employees are also collectively the largest participant in the

United Way’s Day of Caring volunteerism event.

“Sanofi Pasteur is not only the largest contributor to the United Way of Monroe County, but also an incredible asset to the entire county. I am genuinely grateful for their presence in the community and their role as a philanthropic and public health leader,” said Michael Albert, executive director, United Way of Monroe County. “In this new role I am excited to partner with Sanofi Pasteur in raising funds, awareness and support for community services in Monroe County.”

Entry Price: $21,800 Price as Tested: $35,390 This week, we again drive the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200, this time delivered with allwheel-drive (AWD) mechanicals. Consumers will find four front drive models to choose from, starting with the LX at $21,800, Limited at $23,585 and then moving up to the “letter” 200s with “S” at $24,825 and top line “C” at $26,325. (Notable is a current $1,500 buyer incentive, so subtract this amount from your model choice).

Chrysler 200 AWD starts at $28,925 in “S” classification, a nomenclature that indicates a sportier version. The very top line “C” models stand for comfort and dates all the way back to the luxurious Chrysler Imperials that were so popular five decades ago. These four specific 200 front drives and two AWDs allow Chrysler to attract specific consumer demographics, from the economy conscious college student ($21,700 for the LX entry) to the well off retired baby boomer ($30,195) for the “C” opulence inspired AWD model.

Our initial drive was the 200 “C” that came in front drive format and relied on four cylinder power. The AWD 200s only come with one engine choice, that being a powerful 3.6-liter V6 that produces acceptable city and exceptional highway EPA numbers of 18 and 29, respectively. The highway number comes thanks to Chrysler’s new nine-speed automatic, which is standard across the line regardless of engine and drive wheel combination. Notable is the automatic transmission uses a dial on the console to engage gears as there is no shift lever to be found.

With its beautiful new exterior and impressive interior, coupled with the outstanding entry price, Chrysler design and mechanical engineers in Sterling Heights, Michigan, can take a bow. Specifically, “all-new” truly is “allnew” as the 2015 Chrysler 200’s only similarity to the 2014 is its midsize EPA class.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 is going to be a major player in the midsize wars, and may actually offer more value for dollar spent than the competitors. Amongst the new interior features standard are rear safety camera, black chrome enhancements, all the powers, power front seats, advanced multi-stage air bags and much, much more. Your Chrysler dealer will gladly explain when you visit.

Built on a new platform and somewhat similar to the new Dart from the Dodge line, Chrysler 200 receives the added comfort and luxury amenities that have always differentiated

Dodge from Chrysler for decades. Important is Chrysler 200’s longer wheelbase, AWD availability and overall luxury appointments.

cylinder. If you want the V6 in a front drive 200, it will cost an additional $1,950 and deliver EPA numbers of 23 city and 36 highway, both good. The AWD steals just a bit of fuel economy, but the tradeoff is secure driving in foul weather conditions.

There’s ample room in the trunk and a 60/40 rear split seat that allows cargo expansion and/ or access. Options our tester featured were a $595 Blind Spot and Cross Path detector (recommended), $795 Premium Lighting Group, $745 19-inch tires on “Hyper Black” chrome aluminum wheels (very nice) and a $1,495 Nav and Sound group that upgrades to a Harman built Uconnect nine speaker Alpine HD SiriusXM stereo with 8.4-inch touch screen and premium driver gauge cluster (sounds great). The final option is a recommended $845 Comfort Group, with “Parkview” rear backup enhancement, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, dual zone climate control and remote start.

Important numbers include a wheelbase of 108 inches, 3,795 lb. curb weight, 16 cu. ft. of cargo space, 15.8 gallon fuel tank and 39.5 inch turn radius.

In summary, the 2015 Chrysler 200 will compete well against all competition and has already received a Five Star safety rating from NHTSA. Initial reviews from the motoring press have been outstanding, as Consumers Digest also gives the new 2015 200 a “Best Buy” rating (as we did five months ago).

It’s definitely worthy of a visit to your Chrysler dealer.

Likes: Really new, AWD fuel mileage, great value for dollar spent.

Dislikes: Some options on top line “C” should be standard, not much else.

Farmer’s market accepts SNAP

With the summer growing season in full swing, the Monroe Farmers Market, located in Courthouse Square in Stroudsburg, is now accepting SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

At the market’s info tent, customers may swipe their card, enter the amount they wish to draw, and receive tokens redeemable throughout the market for eligible purchases.

Cathryn Hahn, who manages the SNAP terminal at the info booth, has several tips for getting the most from SNAP purchases.

“First of all, bring the kids!” she said.

“Kids are more likely to eat fresh fruits and veggies they’ve picked out themselves. For the best value, be flexible with your meal planning and take advantage of produce that’s in season. Walk around, see what’s available, then make your purchases. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. For example, if you’re not sure what kohlrabi is, ask the farmer. We welcome customers to talk with the person growing their food. That’s what this is all about.”

SNAP offers nutrition assistance to millions of people and is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net. The Food and Nutrition Service has begun to promote SNAP benefits at local farm markets

nationwide.

“With the SNAP program we are able to supply more families and individuals with local fresh foods,” said Laleña Stirr, Monroe Farmers Market President. “Hopefully we will wean more people off their dependency of highly processed foods.”

The market’s community outreach has been extensive. Virginia Romagno, a market vendor and owner of Special Lady’s Specialties, was instrumental in getting the word out in the Monroe and Pike areas.

“The East Stroudsburg School District distributed flyers for kids to bring home, and Stroudsburg schools put posters in all their buildings,” she says. “We sent flyers to Women’s Resource Center, the Interagency Council in Monroe and Pike Counties, Family Promise, New Perspectives, and Monroe County Housing Authority. We are on CareConnect for the American Cancer Society, and the Office of Aging.”

Scholarship awarded

The Delaware Highlands Conservancy has awarded the inaugural Vanessa Van Gorder Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 to Claire Harvey, a graduating senior at Honesdale High School. The scholarship was established this spring in honor of Van Gorder, a West Chester University grad who died in 2014. The Conservancy established this scholarship in Vanessa’s memory and to honor her dream of becoming an educator.

Harvey graduated cum laude from Honesdale High School, and is spending her summer as a counselor at Journey’s End Farm Camp in Sterling, where she will teach children about nature, conservation, and respect for each other. This fall, Claire will attend the University of California Irvine to study literary journalism.

In school and in her community, she was treasurer of the National Honor Society, a Scholastic Bowl Team Member and an intern at the Cooperage Project.
