A pair of summer parties this weekend

ADVANTAGE EDITOR

It’s the end of June, and it’s not quite the Fourth of July. In these parts, that means two summer festivals, both of which have become annual traditions, are back. In Blakely it’s JuneFest, sponsored by the Blakely/Peckville Recreation Committee. It will be Friday and Saturday, June 26-27, starting at 4 p.m. each day, at the Wilson Fire Co., 700 Erie St. in Peckville. On Friday there will be a firefighters’ parade stepping off at 7 p.m. It will end at the firehouse, where there’ll be food, homemade desserts, beverages, a beer tent, kids’ games, a bouncy house and musical entertainment from Top shelf EntertainThe JuneFest committee meets to discuss plans for event. From left, seated: John DeLeo, ment, Marilyn Kennedy and Flashdrive. Call 570Blakely Mayor Jeanette Mariani and Jo Ann Berta. Standing: Rick Evans, Jim Randalunas, Kathy 383-9946 for more information. DeLeo, Frank Lesnefsky and Matilda Dubiel. Phil Minelli and Al Gillow are also on the committee. Meanwhile in Throop, it wouldn’t be the end of June without a visit to the annual Cow Flop, sponsored by the Throop Little League Booster Club. This is the 27th year for the event. It’ll be Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28, at Washington Street Park, Washington and Loftus streets. The festivities begin Saturday at 3 p.m. and will feature music by Nothing Yet (5 p.m.) and Velvet Soul (8 p.m.). There will also be a performance by the Double R Twirlettes at 7 p.m. Sunday activities begin with a parade, stepping off at 1 p.m. A chicken barbecue dinner will be served from noon to 6 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Mania (1 p.m) and Black Tie Stereo (3:45 p.m.) and Daddy O and the Sax Maniax (8 p.m.). Other attractions include rides, a magic and clown show Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and pony rides. The actual “cow flop” will begin Sunday around 6:30 p.m. The person who picks the winning square receives $5,000. (To purchase tickets call 570-383-7906.) At last year’s Cow Flop in Throop, the crowd waits for the big moment. The evening ends with fireworks. BUTCH COMEGYS / TIMES-TRIBUNE
