BANNER Edgy fairy tale musical at Phoenix
by Kimberly M. Aquilina
SPECIAL TO THE TRIBORO BANNER
This weekend opens the Phoenix Performing Arts Centre’s performance of “Into the Woods,” a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine that intertwines the stories of the Brothers Grimm with Charles Perrault fairy tales. The show runs from Oct. 16 through Oct. 25 at the center in Duryea. “Into the Woods” delves into the world of a witch who has placed a curse on a childless couple and forces them to do her bidding, finding and bringing her magical items from fairy tale classics in the hopes of reversing their ill fortune. “We try to give our kids a variety of styles of musicals and Sondheim gives them a very unique and challenging experience like no other,” said Lee LaChette, the show’s artistic director, director of act one and choreographer. Yes, LaChette said, “kids.” Phoenix is a child-driven theater, but people of all ages are welcome. “[For ‘Into the Woods’], our cast is ages 11 to 18, with the youngest playing Jack and Little Red. The rest are teens. Phoenix, depending on the production, takes ages four to adult,” LaChette explained. “We are unique like no other theater company in the area, in that we allow our youth to do full-length, adult productions or work with adults equally in a production, because we are not just a kids’ theater company,” LaChette added. The diversion from typical fairy tales, which seem so familiar until Sondheim and Lapine mix them in their creative blender, would seemingly be a challenge for anyone, but during just seven weeks of rehearsal, LaChette said the cast nailed it. “It took a lot of work
