Golf tourney proceeds grant ‘a last wish’
by Tucker Hottes
SPECIAL TO THE ADVANTAGE
Golfers are getting ready to hit the links for a good cause: Hospice Advantage of Clarks Summit will host the inaugural Angels on the Green golf tournament at Skyline Golf Course in Greenfield Township, Saturday, Aug. 29. Registration is at 7 a.m. and includes a continental breakfast. The registration fee is $100 per golfer ($400 for four-golfer teams). Cost includes greens, fees and cart, food and drinks on the course and dinner afterwards. Following a shotgun start at 8 a.m., teams of four will compete for prizes donated by area businesses — including a chance at the $10,000 hole-in-one prize. A luncheon and prize reception, at Rossi’s Ristorante in Archbald, will begin at 2 p.m. Hospice Advantage executive director Brenda Conlon said the event benefits the organization’s Hospice Angels foundation. “It’s like a Make-A-Wish type program for our patients in hospice who have a last wish that we’d like to grant,” she said. “It can be a financial thing, something they’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t do — it can be family things as well. We’ve already helped several people through our foundation, and all the proceeds from the golf tournament will be donated directly to the foundation.” Conlon said the foundation considers a wide variety of requests from patients in hospice. “One patient hadn’t seen a loved one, his daughter, in a few years and was no longer able to travel,” she said. “The daughter did not have money to get a flight in. So we paid for the daughter to get a flight to come to see him prior to his passing. We bought

the ticket for the daughter, and she was able to come see her dad and we were able to grant him that. It made him extremely happy, and the daughter as well, so we were able to make that wish come true. Financially it wasn’t feasible for her to do so — that’s something bigger that we’ve done.” Although some requests might seem smaller in scope, Conlon said the impact on the patient can be just as large. “The request can be very simple,” she said. “We have a patient in Hazleton who kept talkFrom left: Susan Meyers, volunteer coordinator; Sue Aulisio, cliniing about a cheesecake cal services director; Devin Kelley, palliative care consultant; Brenda from Junior’s in Brook- Conlon, executive director; Carol Feely, team coordinator; Bill Conlyn.
