Jessup throws its annual Family Day festival by Christopher Cornell ADVANTAGE EDITOR
We’re headed into Independence Day weekend, and all over Northeastern Pennsylvania, residents will be celebrating with parties, barbecues and, of course, fireworks. In our area, the big party will be the Family Day Celebration Sunday, July 5, at Veteran’s Memorial Field in Jessup, sponsored by the Jessup 21st Century Association and Jessup Borough. This will be the 20th year for the event, which features performances, music and food stands. Donations will be accepted at the gates. The festivities will begin at 7 p.m. with a martial arts demonstration by the students at Tiger Kai Karate of the Spectrum Gym in Blakely. They’ll be followed at 7:30 p.m. by a hair-raising performance from Rob the Juggler and a demonstration by students from the AMR Gymnastics Center in Archbald. At 8 p.m., Jus4Fun deejays Samantha and Glenn will be spinning tunes into the night. If you’re hungry, the St. Ubaldo Society will host the food stand, offering hot dogs, wimpies, popcorn, ice cream, pierogies, pizza, cake, soda and coffee. For the kids, there’ll be face painting and a bounce house. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. And don’t forget to bring blankets, lawn chairs and maybe some bug spray. If one night of fireworks isn’t enough, here are a few other options nearby: July 3 • Philharmonic & fireworks. Music, vendors and fireworks in downtown Scranton. The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Courthouse Square, Scranton. 570963-6800 or lackawannacounty.org. • Fireworks display. Lake Ariel. lakearielfireco.com. • Fireworks display. The Rotary Club of the Abingtons hosts this annual celebration. Food and beverage will be available
