Abington Heights Comets Football Fan Club hosts ‘Night at the Races’ by Stephanie Longo

ABINGTON SUBURBAN EDITOR

Feeling lucky? Football fans can place a bet on their favorite “horse” in Comet country on Saturday, April 25, at the inaugural “Night at the Races” fundraiser sponsored by the Abington Heights Comets Football Fan Club. The event will be held at the Clarks Summit Fire Hall, 321 Bedford St., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and races beginning at 7 p.m. For $50, participants can sponsor a race or for $20 they can sponsor a horse at the BYOB event. If the sponsored horse wins, the ticketholder will win back his or her $20. General admission tickets without bets are $10. The fundraiser is the group’s largest this year and will replace the club’s annual golf tournament, which club members felt excluded potential supporters who might not play the game. “The funds from this event will benefit the Comets football players directly,” said Carol Rothenberger, president of the Comets Football Fan Club. “Our club also provides meals for summer double-practice sessions, meals after games, team apparel, team photography and training and safety equipment. Basically, we provide the football players with coachrecommended sporting equipment.” Besides the racing, there will also be basket raffles and a silent auction. Rothenberger described the event as being as close as possible to an actual racetrack experience without traveling. “The Night at the Races will capture all the suspense and close-up action, which recreates the atmosphere of being at the racetrack,” she said. “Each race will feature commentary by professional racetrack announcers and will show the horses in all facets of the race. The races will be actionpacked. Special races, such as daily doubles, will also be featured.” The Comets Football Fan Club also hosts car washes, a “Comet Card” sale and pasta

dinners as additional fundraisers. Rothenberger credits the school district’s businesses and residents with the groups’ success. “Abington-area community businesses have been very generous in the past with supporting the Abington Heights football program,” she said. “We’re hoping that anyone considering coming to this event gathers

a group of friends for a unique night out to support our community football team.” To sponsor a race or a horse or to purchase a general admission ticket, send a check for the appropriate amount made payable to the Comets Football Fan Club to DeAnn Wellard, 1007 Spruce Drive, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
