Women across the mid-Atlantic region who own, care for or are interested in learning more about forestland are invited to apply to attend the Women and Their Woods (WaTW) Educational Retreat from Sept.

15-18 at the Highlights Foundation Facility in Boyd’s Mill, Milanville.

The four-day workshop is full of educational programs and field trips related to the care and management of forestland.

The result is a friendly, peer-learning environment and connection to a network of educated landowners and natural resource professionals.

Topics and activities in indoor and

outdoor sessions include forest ecology, wildlife, estate and financial planning, calculating the value in your forest, forest plant identification, and more. Officials say WaTW graduates go on to serve as mentors for other landowners in their communities in the proper stewardship of their lands.

According to Christine Foland, a Pennsylvania landowner and WaTW retreat graduate, “It is hard for me to believe how differently I view my woods after our four days together. This ongoing workshop focuses on the individual, helping them to develop their own personal style and technique working with the oil medium. Juried exhibition results ‘New York, New York’

Prizes were awarded recently to the top artists in the East Stroudsburg University Student Art Association annual juried student art exhibition.

“Running,” a pen and ink drawing by Morgan Weissbach, a junior from Saylorsburg, was named best in show. This is the second consecutive year that Weissbach’s work earned top honors.

Another of Weissbach’s pen and ink drawings, “When Worlds Collide,” earned honorable mention in the exhibit.

“Science Fiction Automation,” a mixed media piece created by Kristina Turturiello, a senior from Honesdale, received the award for the best 3-D work in the exhibit.

First prize was awarded to Laila Andujar, a freshman from Milford, for her charcoal drawing, “Self Portrait.”

Brendan Reilly, a sophomore from Mount Bethel, earned the second prize for his painting, “Vertigo.”

Third prize went to Abigail Cruz, a sophomore from Scotrun, for her 3-D piece, “Royal Bird.”

Prizes for the exhibit were sponsored by the Pocono Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and Music in the Mountains. Jody Singer, founder of Origins Gallery, juried the exhibit this year.

For the past two years, East Stroudsburg University students in the Musical Theatre Organization (MTO) have presented a small cabaret at the end of the academic year to have another opportunity to do what they enjoy most — perform songs from Broadway, Running, a pen and ink drawing by Mor- movie and television musicals.

Create a miniature water garden in no time at all All you need is a watertight container, a few plants and some water to create a miniature water garden that will add an exotic touch to your backyard. As the centerpiece of your deck or as a decorative feature in a rockery, a miniature water garden puts you in a peaceful state of mind as soon as you see it. Here’s how you can create your own in a few easy steps.

Choose a waterproof container with a diameter of about 17 inches and a depth of about 12 inches. It should be made of plastic, ceramic or wood and not have any drainage holes. Avoid terracotta pots, as you would have to apply a waterproof coating to seal them.

In order to create a perfect ecosystem, your mini water garden should contain a plant from each of the following categories: • an oxygenating plant (waterweed, ceratophylla or myriophillum) • a floating plant (water hyacinth, water lettuce, duckweed, etc.)

• a floating foliage plant such as dwarf water lily • an emergent plant (canna, iris versicolor, colocasia, etc.)

Position a brick in the bottom of the container and place the root ball of your emergent plant on it. The brick is useful for raising the plant to the appropriate height. Place the floating foliage plant and oxygenating plant in the container, one on each side of the emergent plant.

Then fill your container with water and drop your floating plant on the surface. You’re done!

Check the water level often over the summer, adding more when necessary. You can keep your mini water garden looking beautiful by cutting away any yellowing foliage and feeding your dwarf water lily with a fertilizer pellet designed specifically for this type of plant.

Looking after peonies doesn’t require any special knowledge. For beautiful flowers every year, just spread some compost to enrich the soil and weed on a regular basis. Unless the summer is exceptionally dry, peonies almost never need to be watered. The exception is for new plants, which need a little water every week for the first two years.

Remove faded flowers throughout the flowering period and cut the plant down to three inches from the ground in the fall. In the past, our grandmothers used to stake peonies in the spring to prevent flowers from drooping when it rained; however, new species of peonies have much stronger stems that don’t usually need tutors.

In the shade or in full sun, it doesn’t matter — begonias are happy everywhere. What’s more, they have no equal when it comes to creating a colorful border or brightening up flower beds, and they’re perfect for creating decorative containers for the deck or front doorstep.

Garden centers stock a wide variety of tuberous and fibrous rooted begonias, which are the most common species in gardens. Elegant and delicate, begonias are available in different colors; sometimes bright, sometimes pastel but always eye-catching. Begonia foliage is also very attractive, with its fleshy, compact and sometimes-asymmetric leaves.

Soil that is moist, rich, light and well-drained will satisfy most begonias’ requirements.

Even though begonias are not usually difficult, they do prefer abundant watering in the morning to allow the soil to dry out during the day. Growing plants upside-down in hanging containers is nothing new, but the idea gains in popularity every summer thanks to its many benefits, both for the gardener and the plants themselves. Many enthusiasts swear by this technique, which produces a hearty harvest with minimal effort and space required.

The two most common species grown upside-down are tomatoes and cucumbers, but other vegetables like eggplants, beans and peppers are also suited to this type of gardening.

A variety of herbs and flowers also produce great results in a hanging garden.

Drill a hole around two inches in diameter in the bottom of the container. Stick the plant’s stem through the hole, from the inside of the pot, and cover the roots with soil. Hang it up somewhere that receives enough sunlight, and voila! You’re all set for gardening success.

You don’t need a huge yard or a ton of fancy equipment to start indulging your green thumb.

Potted plants are an especially good solution for people with little or no ground space available, such as those living in apartment complexes with only a small balcony to work with. I live in a wooded area where my children play often.

Should I be worried about ticks?

This is a great question and the perfect time of year to be asking it. Ticks are tiny insects that live on the blood of other mammals and attach to the skin. Long grass and wooded areas are the places they frequent most during the warmer months, so please be careful before sending your children out to play!

The first action you can take is, when sending your children out to play, make sure they aren’t headed into the deep woods.

Have them stay on the driveway, the side of the street (away from the cars, of course!) or on the porch/patio. Ticks hang off the sides of grass just waiting to attach to a body, so the less grass, the less chance they have of getting bitten.

Check your children thoroughly when they return from playing. Inspect their legs, scalp, neck, under the arms, in and around the ears, belly button, and any place where their skin was exposed. Also, have your children shower or bathe as soon as possible after coming indoors. This will wash off any ticks that could be crawling on them. Put their clothes immediately in the dryer on high heat for an hour to kill any remaining ticks.

To repel ticks while they are outside, use products that contain 20% or more DEET and use on exposed skin. This was last several hours. If you are headed for an activity that you know will involve woods, like hiking or picking berries, wear long clothing like jeans and long-sleeved shirts. You can also use DEET products on your clothing or buy pre-treated clothing.

The most common misconception about ticks is that you will get Lyme disease if you’re bitten by one. Although you run the risk of getting Lyme disease, it isn’t immediate and it depends on the region, the type of tick and the amount of time the tick has been attached to the skin. You have 36 hours before transmission of Lyme disease (if you’ve been bitten by a deer tick). Deer ticks are brown and the size of a poppy seed and are prevalent in the Pocono area.

If you find a tick attached to yourself or your child: • Remove the tick o Using fine tweezers or tick tweezers, pinch the tick as close to the skin surface as possible o Pull back gently and evenly. Don’t twist or rip. o Be careful not to squeeze or crush the tick, as it may have infectious fluids inside its body o Once removed, wash skin and hands thoroughly with soap and water and apply antibiotic cream if skin is irritated o If the head of the tick is still in the skin, leave it there. It will be expelled on its own • Check for redness, itchiness and a spread of a rash within 1 to 4 weeks. This could be a sign of Lyme disease and you should see your doctor immediately.

He/she will give you antibiotics.

At the PMC’s Immediate Care Centers, we remove the tick and can send it off for testing to make sure Lyme disease isn’t present if desired. Although, there is an additional cost attached to this service.

Although this sounds alarming, don’t panic. Your children can still play outside. Just take precaution before and after they play and monitor their skin.

VEGETABLE BEEF STEW 3 pounds well-trimmed beef round, cut into 1-1/2-inch cubes 1/2 cup seasoned flour 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 large onions, cut into wedges or t hick rounds 4 medium-size carrots, cut into 1-inch lengths or diagonal slices 1-1/4-pounds small red-skinned potatoes, quartered 3 stalks celery, cut into 1-inch lengths or slices 4 cups beef broth 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste Fresh ground black pepper, to taste Coat meat with seasoned flour and brown in hot oil. Reduce heat to mediumlow. Drain off all but one tablespoon pan drippings. Add onions, carrots, potatoes and celery to pot. Cook about 8 to 10 minutes, stirring once or twice until lightly browned. Add broth, tomato paste and mustard, stirring to scrape up browned bits.

Bring to a boil. Return meat to pot.

Reduce heat; cover and simmer 1 hour longer, stirring once. Taste, add additional broth; salt and pepper if necessary. Cover and simmer 1 hour longer, stirring once or twice until meat is tender and sauce slightly thickened. Yield: 8 servings.

(Note: Coating meat with seasoned flour seals in juices and helps achieve a dark brown crustiness. The crusty bits left over from browning add flavor and color and thicken the stew. To make seasoned flour, enough to coat 3 pounds of meat, mix 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1-1/2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon pepper, preferably fresh ground, in a large bag or bowl.)

Shake or toss about half the meat at a time until pieces are separated and evenly coated with seasoned flour. For larger pieces (chicken or turkey parts), coat only one or two pieces at a time, shaking bag or turning in bowl to coat all sides. Spread floured meat in a single layer on a sheet of waxed paper.

Browning starts with the right pot. Use a 5- to 6-quart heavy, tightly lidded pot, not aluminum, unless it’s nonstick. Heat oil over medium-high heat. Be sure it’s

1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla 3/4 cup blackberry preserves In a medium bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, sage and baking powder; set aside. In large mixing bowl, beat butter with electric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds.

Add brown sugar and beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg yolks, lemon peel and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much of the flour mixture as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour mixture. Shape dough into 1/4-inch balls. Place 1-inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Lightly press the tip of your thumb into the center of each ball. Fill centers with about 1/4 teaspoon blackberry preserves. Bake at 350° for about 10 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Cool on cookie sheet 1 minute.

Transfer to wire rack to cool completely.

Yield: 5 dozen cookies.

BANANA-CHOCOLATE CHIP CAKE 1 stick butter, softened 1-1/4 cups sugar 2 eggs, beaten slightly 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 large bananas, mashed 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 6-ounces chocolate chips Powdered sugar Grease and flour a 9- or 10-inch tube pan or 2 loaf pans. Preheat oven to 350°.

In mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs. Stir baking soda into sour cream; add to butter mixture. Beat well. Stir in vanilla and mashed bananas.

Add flour and salt; blend well. Stir in chocolate chips and turn batter into prepared pan. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until cake tests done. Cool in pan about 10 minutes; remove from pan and cool on rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
