At a recent United Way of Monroe County community meeting at Northampton Community College in Tannersville, corporate partners, community leaders and student and staff representatives from Monroe County’s local school districts announced the results of their respective United Way campaigns to a packed room of volunteers and supporters of the United Way. Among those presenting their results, Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi announced another record-breaking

year of funds raised to support community services in Monroe County Sanofi.

Sanofi Pasteur and employees raised $300,000 for community services, which included employee donations to the United Way and its partner agencies, together with a company match from both Sanofi Pasteur and the Sanofi Foundation for North America.

In addition, students from Clear Run Elementary raised $700 through a coin drive competition between classrooms.

Tobyhanna Elementary Center students

raised $1,500. The student government association sold Twizzlers, students paid for extra recess and staff paid to dress down for a day.

Swiftwater Intermediate School raised $1,150. The student government association sold Smencils (scented pencils) to everyone.

The Monroe County Conservation District is offering three separate workshops to help you learn the regulations and write your plan. Participants should choose from one of the following dates and times; Wednesday, Feb. 1, 6-9 p.m. and Wednesdays, Feb. 8 and 15, 9 a.m. to noon.

Topics covered by the workshop will include the revised manure management manual, chapter 102 (erosion and sediment control) updates, and using PAOneStop for your manure management plan. Attendees will receive a copy of the updated manure management manual. One-on-one assistance will be available in order for attendees to leave the workshop with a completed Manure Management Plan for their farm.

FEB. 4 The Monroe County Conservation District is teaming up with Penn State Extension to cohost the annual Farmers Appreciation Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Polk Township Fire Hall in Kresgeville. The Polk Township ladies auxiliary will serve a family style meal and musical entertainment will be provided by the McWilliams’s Brothers. There will also be other activities including games, door prizes, information booths and giveaways. • The Delaware Highlands Conservancy is accepting applications from eligible high school seniors for the Delaware Highlands Conservancy/Yeaman Scholarship and the Vanessa Van Gorder Memorial Scholarship, both in the amount of $1,000.

The Yeaman Scholarship has been given annually since 2004 to a student planning to pursue a field in environmental studies in college, in honor of the Conservancy’s founder, Barbara Yeaman. It is open to students in school districts bordering the Upper Delaware River.

In 2015, the Conservancy established a Memorial Scholarship in honor of Vanessa Joy Van Gorder, who died in 2014. The scholarship is open to high school seniors pursuing a career in education or environmental stewardship, in school districts bordering the Upper Delaware River.

Students at eligible districts should contact their guidance counselors for applications. Applications must be submitted through the school’s guidance counselor for transmittal to the Delaware Highlands Scholarship Committee

by March 30. Recipients of the scholarship will be notified in May.

The Monroe County Conservation District (MCCD) is accepting applications for the 43rd Monroe County Conservation Camp, held at Stony Acres Wildlife

Sanctuary/Recreational Facility. Conservation Camp is a residential camp for teens ages 14 through this year’s high school graduate, held Saturday, July 15, through Saturday, July 22.

Campers are given an opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on programs that will teach them about Pocono wildlife, outdoor survival skills.

Cost: $200, which includes the $75 application fee and the $125 camp fee.

The application fee must be included with the application. The camp fee may be paid by a sponsoring organization, or by a scholarship. A limited amount of scholarships are available. The chapter will be collecting donations of flies for a number of causes including Casting for Recovery and Operation Healing Waters.

STUFFED EGGPLANT 2 small long eggplants (1 to 1-3/4 pounds) Lemon juice 2 large onions, finely chopped (about 2 cups) SPICED FISH 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 3 cups cooked fish, cut into chunks 4 teaspoons Olive oil Onion slices 2 large ripe tomatoes, peeled and 2/3 to 3/4 cup white wine vinegar chopped 1/4 to 1/2 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon sugar Preheat oven to 350°. Split eggplants in 1 tablespoon pickling spices half, lengthwise. Brush with lemon juice.

Heat olive oil in 5-quart saucepan over mediumhigh heat until hot. Add celery stalks and next 6 ingredients; cook until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in stewed tomatoes, vegetable broth, spinach, reserved mashed beans and 2 cups water, breaking up tomatoes. Heat to boiling.

Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 30 minutes. Stir in remaining beans and heat through. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese. Yield: 4 main-dish servings.

SUGAR DROP COOKIES 3/4 stick unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup sugar 1 large egg white, beaten 1/2 cup fat-free sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg Mix butter and sugar together in large mixing bowl until creamy. Add beaten egg white, sour cream and vanilla extract; blend well until smooth. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg; slowly add to creamed mixture. Blend well. Drop by teaspoonful spaced one inch apart on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350º for about 10 minutes until golden. Remove from baking sheet and cool on wire rack.

Yield: 36 cookies.

LEMON-SOUR CREAM PIE 2/3 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 cup milk Yolks from 3 large eggs 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon peel 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 stick butter or margarine 1 cup sour cream 1 (9-inch) pie shell, baked and cooled Garnish: sweetened whipped cream In medium-size saucepan, mix sugar and cornstarch. Whisk in milk until smooth; then yolks until blended. Stir in lemon peel and juice; add butter or margarine. Whisk constantly over medium heat 4 to 5 minutes until thick. DO NOT BOIL. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Stir in sour cream until well blended; pour into pie shell. Cover loosely and refrigerate at least 6 hours or up to 2 days. Garnish with dollops of whipped cream. Yield: 8 servings.

2017 Kia Sportage SX AWD Entry price: $22,990 Price as tested: $34,895 This week we’re driving Kia’s fourthgeneration Sportage SX AWD, a completely re-designed version of the popular compact SUV from the folks that also give us the Hyundai Tucson. Sportage is one of many Kia vehicles available today as Americans now have a new confidence in the Korean built vehicles thanks to positive consumer ratings and buyer friendly purchase plans.

Sportage legacy dates back to its first generation, sold from 1993 to 2002. Then, after a two year hiatus, Kia brought out its second generation from 2004 through 2010.

Neither compared to the attributes of the third generation, sold from 2011 to 2016 here in North America, when more powerful engines were offered along with a much better build, overall. This fourth generation is indeed the best one yet with its new muscular exterior stance and complete design overhaul. I expect this Sportage to be one of the company’s most popular models overall.

Available in three trims, Sportage for 2017 starts with entry front drive LX at a base of $22,990. Next is EX, which starts at $25,500 and adds more amenities. The third model is our tester, specifically a performance based Kia SX Turbo model that begins at $32,500. Our Sportage arrived in AWD mode, which adds $1,500 to the entry price.

The biggest improvement in my opinion is the new model’s longer wheelbase as a few inches more coupled with a revamped interior finds way more legroom for back seat passengers and up to six more cubic feet of cargo room.

Under the Sportage SX hood sits the peppy 2.0-liter turbo four cylinder that puts out 237 horses and 260 lb. ft. of torque. There’s more than enough horsepower and torque for all your driving needs as the engine mates to a fine shifting six-speed “Select Mode” automatic transmission, which is the only transmission available across the line.

As for fuel mileage, you’ll pay for the turbo and heavier AWD components as our Sportage came in at 20 city and 23 highway, well behind many of the competitors. However, if you opt for the LX or EX models

with the standard 2.4-liter, 181 horse injected engine MPG moves up to 23 city and 30 highway for front drive and 21 city and 25 highway for AWD. The choice is yours.

Out on the road, the new Sportage delivers a ride better than older Sportage models thanks to the longer wheelbase and a fully independent strut front and link rear suspension. Although the AWD underpinnings can still be a bit bumpy at times, a locking center differential is notable as are Hankook 19-inch all season tires on nice alloy wheels for added 4x4 capabilities.

Additionally, Sportage models feature standard downhill brake force assist, electronic stability and traction control, ABS four-wheel disc brakes, hill descent control, and an advanced airbag system with side curtain canopies.

More safety you say?

Kia Sportage has already received many “Top Safety Pick” awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and I expect this 2017 new generation to do the same. Standard on our Sportage are advanced premium safety features like rear safety camera, lane departure, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear park assist, and autonomous emergency braking (which means the driver doesn’t have to press on the brake as Kia does it for you in emergency braking situations).

Top class Sportage SX Turbo comes fully loaded with no options as an $895 delivery charge pushes the final retail tally to $34,895.

Important numbers include a wheelbase of 105.4, up from last year’s 103.9, 3,898 lb. curb weight, 16.4 gallon fuel tank, 30.7 to 60.1 cu ft. of cargo space, 34.8 ft. turn circle, and 6.8 inch ground clearance. If you need to tow a small boat or pop up camper, the maximum towing is 2,000 lbs.

The fourth-generation five-passenger Sportage is worthy of your consideration if shopping the smaller SUC/Crossover class.

From quality build to lots of amenities to a good AWD system, this Sportage is ready for your showroom visit. Remember, too, to check for dealer incentives as several are currently offered on the 2017 Sportage.

Likes: New exterior, roomy interior, improved ride, 100,000-mile warranty.

Dislikes: Fuel mileage not the best, not much else.
