SUBURBAN
Library summer programs aim to keep kids active, engaged by Linda Scott
SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
The Abington Community Library is starting its summer programs with a “story walk” and musical workshop on Saturday, June 4. These events will be the kickoff for the library summer reading programs. The programs will be held at Hillside Park on Winola Road in South Abington Township. “The events were put together so that families could enjoy a day at the park along with stories and music,” said Laura Gardoski, head of youth services at the library. “It seemed like the appropriate way to celebrate the beginning of a fun summer at the library.” Singer-songwriter Tim Farrell will lead the Silly Songs Musical workshop at 10 and 11 a.m. and at noon. Farrell is from Wycombe in Bucks County and is a performer, composer and educator. He received his music education from Bucks County Community College. He was a roster artist for 13 years as a member for the Pennsylvania Performing Arts Tour. “For the workshop, I will play and sing some story songs which are songs that tell a complete story from beginning to end, instead of just a verse/chorus structure,” he said. “The participants will be invited to sing along and will also be invited to draw pictures based on their perception of the story.” He will play various guitars and a ukulele and will sing “Mermaid of Ontario” and “Unicorn.” A story walk around the lake, based on Lois Ehlert’s book Growing Vegetable Soup will take place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be performed again Saturday, June 11, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Forever Young Fishing Derby at the park. Growing Vegetable Soup is a story of a father and son who plant, water and watch seeds grow. They make a soup of tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage and corn from their harvest. “Children will have the opportunity to interact with stories in different ways by participating in the musical and story walk. The pages from Growing Vegetable Soup will be displayed around the lake for families to enjoy,” Gardoski said. In case of rain, the events will take place in-

side the library, 1200 W. Grove St. in Clarks Summit. “Our summer reading club theme is ‘On Your Mark, Get Set, READ,’ with an emphasis on staying active, so we chose Growing Vegetable Soup to support that theme of healthy living,” Gardoski said. Abington Community Library patrons only can register for the summer reading club while at the park. It is open to children from infants through sixth grade. Registration is also available at the library beginning on Monday, June 6. “When children register, they receive pages of fun activities and a reading log to fill out at
home as they read or are read to throughout the summer,” Gardoski said. “They will also receive information on all kinds of fun events at the library, like yoga classes, a visit from the Zoomobile, a magic show and crafts. We encourage parents to bring their children to the library throughout the summer to prevent loss of important literary skills gained throughout the school year.” Children can also register for the summer reading club at the fishing derby. The events are supported by a Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Community grant and a grant from the Convenant Presbyterian Church in Scranton.
