Baseball legends dedicated ball field

The borough of Blakely had a visit from two legendary major leaguers last weekend, and they left behind a brand new ball field.

The Peckville Assembly of God church was the host, and baseball greats Darryl Strawberry and Roy White were the guests of honor, at a dinner at the Best Western Pioneer Plaza Hotel in Carbondale. The evening included a sports memorabilia silent auction and live interview/question-and-answer session with Strawberry and White.

The following day, Sunday, Strawberry, who is now an ordained minister, spoke during the church’s service. Following the service, Strawberry and White threw out the first pitches at the new ballfield.

The field is on the grounds of the church, but will also be available for use by leagues in the community, such as youth/adult church leagues, girls’ softball leagues, Little Leagues and T-ball leagues.

Pastor Terry Drost praised Strawberry for the work he is now doing, talking to kids about the dangers of drugs “Darryl was a great player,” he said, “but he’s a better person now, because he’s resurrected his life and because of what he’s overcome.”

“I enjoyed hitting home runs,” Strawberry told the crowd, “and I’m grateful for my career, but I’m more grateful God’s grace over my life.”

Many people with chest pain are worried they are having heart problems and go to their doctor or the emergency room. The tests show their heart is fine but they continue to have lingering chest pain. A recent study found that misalignments in the mid-back are an often overlooked cause of chest pain. In this study the researchers found Chiropractic to be very effective in curing chronic chest pain when the tests showed that the heart was fine.

RiverFest Canoe-a-thon

The Lackawanna River Corridor Association will hold its 28th annual RiverFest Saturday, May 30.

The day kicks off at 10 a.m. with the “canoe-a-thon.” Those taking the more-challenging 12-mile course will launch from David Maslyar Park in Archbald. Those choosing to take the less-challenging “fun paddle” will launch from the Blakely Borough Recreation Park in Peckville. Registration forms and other details are available at lrca.org or by calling 570-347-6311.

The canoe-a-thon finish line is adjacent to the Olive Street Bridge across from Memorial Stadium in Scranton. The main festivities will take place there beginning at 11 a.m.

Honored by the Bishop

A Boy Scout is reverent. It is part of the oath each Scout takes. Therefore, being an active part in his church is one of the important aspects of being a Scout.

Zachary Blau, a Boy Scout with Troop 21 in Dickson City, takes that part of his oath seriously and it has been noticed.

Blau attends Blessed Sacrament Parish in Throop and has recently been awarded the Bishop’s Youth Award. Bishop Joseph C. Bambera and the Diocese of Scranton honored Blau during a recent church service. The award is given to young people who “contribute to the mission of the local church by reaching out and touching lives in real and meaningful ways.”

Spring Vocal Concert Classic Voices, a community-based a cappella choir, will present its annual spring concert, “Voices Along the River,” Saturday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce building, 27 N. Main Street in Carbondale.

The program will include time-honored songs such as “Deep River,” “The Water is Wide” and “Down to the River to Pray” (featured in the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou.”)

The majority of the plants come from garden club members but if you are cleaning out flower beds or separating perennials and are interested in sharing potted plants for the club to sell, they can be brought to the picnic grounds on Friday, June 5, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Perennials should be potted several weeks in advance. The marketplace will be open 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Local artisans and businesses will be selling their wares, including photographs, jewelry, mustard, maple syrup, soaps and lotions, garden items, paintings, concrete work, garden equipment, baskets, shrubs and trees. There will also be food stands and live music by Eli Marsh.

Wine Festival Trip

The Mid Valley Rotary Club will sponsor a bus trip to the Watkins Glen Wine Festival Sunday, July 12. Cost is $75. The bus leaves the Viewmont Mall at 8 a.m. Cocktails and snacks will be served on the way to the festival.

Goulash with Green Peppers 1 pound lean boneless chuck roast, cut into 1-1/2-inch cubes Vegetable cooking spray 2 medium onions, chopped 1 cup water 1 tablespoon paprika 1 teaspoon beef-flavored bouillon granules 1 small green pepper, chopped Brown meat over medium heat in a medium pot coated with cooking spray.

Add onion and continue cooking over medium heat 5 minutes or until onion is tender. Add water, paprika, bouillon granules and green pepper, stirring well. Cover and cook over low heat (simmer) 2 hours or until meat is very tender. (Goulash may be served over hot mashed potatoes, hot cooked noodles or rice.) Yield: 4 servings.

Chicken Paprikas 3-1/2 to 4 pounds chicken, cut into small pieces 3 tablespoons butter 2 large onions, coarsely chopped 3 tablespoons flour 1 heaping tablespoon paprika 1 dry bay leaf 2 cups warm water 1-1/2 pints heavy cream 1-1/2 tablespoons white vinegar In large soup pot, sauté onions and butter slowly. When half done, add paprika and continue cooking until deep, golden brown. (Do not burn.) Add 1 cup warm water to onion mixture; bring to a slow boil. Pour this over chicken pieces; add salt and pepper; cover and cook on medium heat until tender; about 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Be careful so that chicken does not burn. When chicken is tender, remove the pieces with a large spoon and transfer to another pot. To the liquid in first pot, add 1 bay leaf, 1 cup warm water; bring to a strong boil.

Take 3 tablespoons flour and add some water in a cup to form a paste, as you would for gravy. Then add more water to make a thickness as for regular gravy. Add this flour mixture to the paprika mixture, stirring constantly for 15 minutes, to prevent sticking to bottom of pot.

After gravy is cooked, add 1-1/2 pints

heavy cream, heat just until ready to boil. en pan juices with cornstarch mixed with cold water. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Add vinegar slowly.

Strain the creamed mixture through Pickled Green Tomatoes a strainer and pour over chicken; discard 30 green tomatoes pulp. Mix chicken thoroughly with liquid 1/2 cup salt and serve.

Wash and dry them; arrange in a 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce crock or glass jar. Bring salt and water to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper a boil. Cool and add vinegar, garlic, bay 1/2 teaspoon salt leaves, peppercorns and pickling spice.

Place meat in a 1 egg large casserole or baking pan and brown 2-1/2 cups fresh blueberries well, about 10 minutes on each side. Ice Cream Topped Chocolate Loaf Cake 1 cup flour 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup cocoa 1/2 stick butter 1 cup boiling water 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt Vanilla ice cream (or your favorite flavor.)

Mix together and hollow out flour, sugar and cocoa. Add remaining ingredients into the hollow, making sure not to “cook” the egg with the boiling water. Stir by hand or mix with beaters until mixed and thoroughly blended. Pour into lightly greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. Top with vanilla ice cream.

Yield: 8 servings.
