Clarks Summit mayor will honor local residents by Linda Scott
SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
For more than three decades, Patty Lawler was a teacher. She taught at the Lakeland School District. She taught second-graders how to read and write. She was also the drama coach of the Curtin Club. Then, in 2014, she took on a new role: mayor of Clarks Summit. Her duties as mayor are many, including attending council meetings and supervising the police department. “I am the face of the community,” she said. “I try to take part in as many events as I can. I am the first-person contact and will answer the call.” One of her pet projects has been the Pocket Park on Depot Street. The park has gardens, a gazebo and a Little Free Library. When she can find some free time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her cockapoo Gracie. Lawler is getting ready for the second annual Mayor’s Brunch. The theme for this year is “Good Neighbors.” “People come to the Abingtons to shop local, visit the Pocket Park for lunch or read a book. It is a sense of community, and everyone comes,” Lawler said. The event will be held at the Ramada Inn on Northern Boulevard in Clarks Summit Saturday, April 16, 9:30-11:30 a.m.. The event will feature door prizes, entertainment, raffle baskets and favors. The menu will include French toast with warmed maple syrup and strawberry puree on the side, baked ham, sausage or bacon, homefried potatoes, asparagus, assorted pastries, scrambled basil eggs, fresh fruit, coffee, orange juice and water. The honorees at the luncheon will include Carla Preate and the Laurel Garden Club, Dr. Jim Lytle of Summit University, Judy Evans of Lee Electric, Kate Marquerdt of Adopt a Christmas tree, Joe Adcroft of Kripsy Kreme, Dawn Williams of Sunrise Café, Jean Yarney of Woodridge

Gathering together to plan the mayor’s brunch are, from left, seated: borough councilmen Herman Johnson and Patrick Williams. Standing: Linda Scott, June Burns, Mayor Lawler and borough councilman Dominic Scott. Council president Gerrie Carey was also on the committee.
Circle, Lori Trygar of Electric Street, Jason O’Malley of O’Malley Real Estate Development and Mayor William Thornburn of Clarks Green. “Laurel Garden Club members Joann and Jack McLaine, Joann and Jim Scanton, Ann Marie and Richard Genova, Mickey Mastriani, Ann McGinty, Nella Hlavack and Bonnie Adams helped with the landscaping at the Pocket Park,” Lawler said. “It was hot days, and they had to remove the rocks, put in top soil,” said Lawler. Then they added mulch, trees and tulips. They took the time to water and weed. These people worked like Trojans.” “Dawn Williams is the owner of the
Sunrise Cafe on Depot Street. She does not have any parking but has a thriving restaurant,” Lawler said. “She has a following, and people return to the restaurant. She gets to know them and what they like to order.” Katie McGinty, who is running for U.S. Senate, is the speaker for the event. Tickets are $22 per person and can be purchased by calling 570-585-4804, at Everything Natural or Clarks Summit Police Department, located on the bottom floor of the Clarks Summit Borough Building. Tickets cannot be purchased at the door. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Pocket Park.
