Summer’s not over yet. By a quirk of the calendar (which already gave us an extra week after Memorial Day) we still have more than two weeks until Labor Day, and the unofficial end of summer. Let’s make the most of it. Topping the menu of possibilities is Pioneer Nights, downtown Carbondale’s annual festival, which is already underway and continues through Saturday, Aug. 22. On Friday, the event opens at 5 p.m. and finishes up at 11 p.m. On Saturday the party starts at 11 a.m. and doesn’t end until midnight. On the main stage on General O’Malley Way, the Friday lineup has Lynnette’s Twirlerettes performing at 6:30 p.m., followed by Ablaze at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Farmer’s Daughter takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday in Memorial Park, the fourth annual Antiques in the Park show will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (See page 2 for more information). At 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, a train excursion from the Steamtown Historical Site in Scranton will arrive, bringing a load of visitors to the party. You may want to welcome them at the train station. Also on Saturday, the Carbondale Public Library will be holding a book and bake sale, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Chamber Art Gallery, 27 N. Main St., will feature an art exhibit entitled “A Step into an Alternative Universe,” featuring artists Sonia Munson, Dr. Sam Wallace and Ralph Meakin. Trolley-bus rides will depart Carbondale City Hall on Saturday, at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m., offering a guided tour around the entire city. The Pioneer Nights Parade steps off on Saturday at 6 p.m. and comes up Main Street. The

day ends with fireworks at dusk. Meanwhile, Jessup Hose Co. No. 2, 333 Hill St., will host its fourth annual Summer Wine Festival Saturday, Aug. 22, noon to 6 p.m. Twelve Pennsylvania wineries will have their products available for tasting and sale. More than 40 other specialty vendors and 10 food vendors, with everything from pasta to seafood, will also be in attendance. There will be live entertainment, games and a basket raffle along with instant bingo available all day. Tickets are $15 in advance and $25 at the gate the day of the event. Under 21 and designated driver tickets will be available for $5. Discount tickets are available in advance from hose company members, at the fire station and at selected businesses. Tickets can also be purchased LocalWineEvents.com. The following day, Sunday, Aug. 23, in Jessup, Citizens for a Healthy Jessup will hold a Concert in the Park 5-9 p.m. at Jessup’s Station Park on Church Road in downtown Jessup. The event will feature various performers

and homemade food. The musical schedule will be: 4:30 p.m. — Jon Vanko; followed by Jiggzy and his All Stars, followed by Friend of the Gypsy. The food stand will include hotdogs, homemade sausage and peppers, penne with vodka sauce, porketta sandwiches and pizza. There will also be a basket raffle. Anyone wishing to donate a basket is asked to drop it off at Station Park prior to the event. And next week, The Valley Community Library will host A Blacktop Affair Thursday, Aug. 27, 6-9 p.m. in the side parking lot next to Blakely Borough Park, rain or shine. The event, which will benefit the Valley Community Library Building Fund, will feature food and drink from local vendors and live music from local band Light Weight. Tickets are on sale now at the library. Advance tickets can be purchased for $15. Tickets also will be available at the door for $20. You must be at least 21 years old to attend. The attire is casual.
