Being chosen as a class officer or a member of student council is still a big deal. The officers may not be able to outlaw homework, but they can serve as the voice of the student body, and that’s important. Schools all over our area are selecting class officers, and that includes Carbondale Area Junior-Senior High School. Here are the results: 12th grade: president Katelyn Dovin, vice president Kayla McDonough, secretary: Olivia Regal and treasurer Amelia Zazzera. 11th-grade president Jessica Borders. 10th-grade president Olivia Manarchuk. Ninth-grade president Alyvia Schiavone. Eighth-grade president Alyssa Cosklo. Seventh-grade president Josh Berg. Student council: president Michaela McLaughlin, vice president Kayla McDonough, secretary Katelyn Dovin,
treasurer Bayley Grizzanti, historian Emma Jones. One of the more remarkable choices is Michaela McLaughlin, who will be student council president despite only being in 10th grade. “I was honored to be chosen as a leader of the entire student body, even though I’m only a sophomore,” she said. “This was a great vote of confidence. In this position, I can play a major part by encouraging class activities that include service projects as well as social happenings. This is a great stepping stone to nurture my leadership and service skills.” Just starting out as a class officer is Josh Berg, who was recently chosen to be the president of his seventh-grade class. “I want to be the voice for my class to express their opinions about what they would like our seventh-grade year to be,” he said. The president of the eighth-grade class is Alyssa Cosklo. “I would like to help students realize that our school is a fun and enjoyable place to be,” she said.

Second row: Alyssa Cosklo, Alyvia Schiavone, Jessica Borders, Olivia Regal, Katelyn Dovin, Amelia Zazzera and Kayla McDonough. In back are the advisors for the group, Joanna Grizzanti (left) and Teressa Dombrosky.
The freshman class will be represented by Alyvia Schiavone. “We already have a group of fantastic individuals who work together well,” she said. “Hopefully, we can plan some great spirit building activities.” Olivia Manarchuck who was recently chosen to be he president of the sophomore class, said she “would like to be a voice for the students in my class who are sometimes left out of the planning and activities. We hope to encourage all of our clubs to do more service activities.” Junior class president is Jessica Borders. “I’d like to put lots of time into planning fun activities especially making our junior/ senior prom the best ever.” Another student who will have plenty to do is Kayla McDonough, who was elected to two positions, one as vice president of her class and one as vice president of student
council. “I’ve been actively involved in student council since ninth grade,” she said. Also holding down two roles will be Katelyn Dovin, who was elected student council secretary and also senior class president. “I’ve made sure that my class’ opinions were heard and understood. That’s why I decided to run this year,” she said. Olivia Regal, secretary of the senior class, said she is “hoping to plan many service activities and trips that are both educational and fun.” “This is actually the first year I decided to get involved in student government,” said Amelia Zazzera, who was elected senior class treasurer. “Since this is our last year together as a class, I wanted to help to make it the best year ever.” Bayley Grizzanti must be doing something right: he was selected to be the treasurer of student council two years in a row. “Our student council is a very active body, participating in fundraisers, service projects and student activities. I want to be an active part in all of these.”
