Area churches will hold special services leading up to Christmas by Linda Scott
SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
The Christmas season is approaching quickly, and many churches in the area will be holding special services or other events to remind you of the real meaning of the holiday. Here’s a look at some of them. • At the Church of the Epiphany, “The students have been working on the unique telling of the Christmas story for the last couple of months,” said Barbara Little, coordinator of Christian education and social media. “Epiphany is known for its involvement of children and youth in all aspects of our parish life,” she added. The pageant will be held on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 9:15 a.m. followed by refreshments. Christmas Eve services will be held at 4:30 p.m. featuring music by the children and a special children’s story. The 10 p.m. service features the adult choir and candlelight. • The Waverly Community Church will hold a Christmas celebration service on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. It will be a candelight service with the Spark Gospel Singers, based at the Lenoxville Methodist church. Children ages 2 to second grade will perform the Christmas story. The service ends with candle lighting and refreshments. “The program will include the Christmas version of “Hallelujah,” a contemporary piece called “Look Who Just Checked In” and other songs,” said parishioner Jen Cohen. • The Clarks Green Assembly of God church will hold its 18th annual live Nativity performance Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19, at 6 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 20, at 5 p.m. The performance includes 35 cast members. “The performance is now held across from the parking lot. It is a gift to the community,” said

There are live animals including sheep, alpaca and Jack the donkey.” Following the performances, cookie cabaret will be held including hot chocolate, coffee and cider. • Countryside Community Church “will hold a family-friendly Christmas Eve service set to begin at 6 p.m.,” said Scott Miller, youth pastor. “The youth help present the service, reading as well as performing the puppets that will be sharing the story of Christmas.” A second service, at 7:30 p.m., with Pastor Mark Terwilliger is a “Lessons and Carols” service.
• The First Presbyterian Church has a Mending service Sunday, Dec. 20, at 4 p.m. Based on the Taize tradition, people gather for scripture, prayers for healing, silent reflection and Lord’s Supper. Children will participate in a Christmas Eve service at 6:30 p.m. with the telling of the Christmas story. The adult choir will sing at a second, 9 p.m. service with lighting of candles to “Silent Night.” A third 11 p.m. service will feature jazz music from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.
