Local churches are planning special Christmas services

The holiday season is upon us and Christmas is already next week. Families are making plans to get together, gifts are being wrapped and houses are decorated with lights and ornaments. During this joyful time of year, Christmas is celebrated as the Christian recognition of the birth of Jesus Christ. For many, rejoicing in the holiday includes attending the traditional Christmas service and activities with friends and family at local churches. The churches provide various events and times to fuel the festive spirit of the community. Listed below are some of the services, events, and concerts occurring in the area that you can attend. • Church of God, Taylor. Sunday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m. Sunday School Christmas program during worship. Thursday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. Christmas Eve Candlelight service. • Divine Mercy Parish at St. Joseph’s, Moosic. Sunday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. Christmas choir concert. • First United Methodist Church of Old Forge. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 7 p.m. pre-Christmas Eve service. Christmas carols will be sung. • Moosic Assembly of God Church. Sunday, Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m. “The King’s Birthday,” a Christmas play about the birth of Christ that will include the scene of the nativity. • Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea. Thursday, Dec. 24, at 4 p.m. and midnight, Christmas Eve service. Friday, Dec. 25, at 9 and 11 a.m. Christmas Day service. • Prince of Peace Parish. Thursday, Dec. 24, at 4 p.m. at Saint Mary’s, Christmas Eve service. Thursday, Dec. 24, at 8 p.m. at Saint Lawrence’s, Christmas Eve service. Sunday, Dec. 20, at 5 p.m. Concert of the Christmas carols in Church Slavonic, performed by students from the University of Scranton. • St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic church, Duryea. Special music will play at 10:15 p.m. and the procession to the manger will be at 10:30 p.m. There will be the blessing of the crib, Christmas trees, Christmas candle and Pasterka Shepherd’s Mass. Friday, Dec. 24, at 9 a.m. Mass of Christmas Day Benediction. • St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, Old Forge. Saturday, Dec. 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a cookie and nut/poppy seed roll sale. Cookies are $8 per pound and rolls will be $10 each. Thursday, Dec. 24, at 8 p.m. Christmas Eve Vigil. Friday, Dec. 25, at 9 a.m. Christmas Day Divine Liturgy. • St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church, Old Forge. Saturday, Dec. 19, at 1-4 p.m.
