Pocono Medical Center has partnered with Story Storks Inc. to become the first hospital in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to offer a literacy program for newborns. It made its debut recently at Pocono Medical Center’s Mother Baby Unit.

Story Storks is a grassroots literacy nonprofit that was founded with the intention of reaching readers at birth. Knowing that more than half of the words a child will ever learn are acquired prior to the time they enter school, Story Storks identified a need for access to literacy from birth.

“As educators, we wanted to give every newborn the best opportunities possible to have the chance to learn words and language,” said Adrienne R. Evans, co-founder of Story Storks.

After much investigative research, in April 2012 Adrienne Evans and Maureen Hicks brought Story Storks to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cooper University Hospital. Shortly after, Story Storks expanded its services to the Mother Infant Unit reaching nearly 3,000 babies each year.

“As we grow from our three hospitals in New Jersey and enter Pennsylvania, we are

happy to reach the babies born at Pocono Medical Center and their families. This particular endeavor was made possible in part through Melissa Huber and her father, state Sen. Mario M. Scavello, as well as the staff at Pocono Medical Center.”

After expanding to Inspira Woodbury in 2014 and Kennedy Health Systems in November 2014 in Gloucester County, Story Storks began serving over 5,000 babies each year in New Jersey. Looking to grow their program, Story Storks looked toward Pennsylvania for a hospital that would be their flagship location outside of New Jersey.

“It is an honor for my district’s hospital to be the first in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to take part in a remarkable initiative toward fostering a literate environment for newborns,” Scavello said.

“As a hospital that is nationally-recognized for excellent outcomes and patient satisfaction in women’s services and labor and delivery, it is only right that we couple quality care with unique programs such as Story Storks,” said Geoffrey M. Roche, director of public and government affairs of Pocono Medical Center.

• Saturday, Nov 10, 5:30-7 p.m.: Live Mammals. Get up-close and personal with live native mammals. Angie Colarusso, founder of Second Chance Wildlife Center will introduce some of her furry friends. Learn about wildlife rehabilitation and mammal adaptations during this show. Geared to all ages. $5 per person. Pre-registration is required.

• Thursday, Nov. 17, 1-2:30 p.m.: Natural Wonders: Critter Camouflage.

2016 Mazda CX-3 Entry Price: $19,960 Price as Tested: $29,790 It’s no surprise that this new sub-compact SUV is impressive, as Mazda carefully brought this car to market based on combining the best of the Mazda 3 and the larger Mazda CX-5 big brother SUV. Starting at just $19,960 for a front-drive Sport model or $21,210 for all-wheel drive (AWD), the reality of parking a new 2016 CX-3 in your driveway comes clearly into focus.

Our tester came fully loaded in Grand Touring trim with Mazda’s heralded i-ACTIV AWD, a smart and fully automatic AWD system that is constantly monitoring road conditions and ready to add or subtract power to the wheels for optimum traction. Considering the AWD system costs only $1,250 more on the three CX-3 models, (Sport, Touring and Grand Touring) this option should be a major consideration regardless of where you live.

Outwardly, Mazda CX-3 bears a striking design resemblance to CX-5, although its final stance sits on a 5.2-inch inch shorter wheelbase. The little Mazda handles extremely well, really impressing us in the tighter turns where it sticks like glue. The secure handling and cornering ability is a stage above the others we’ve driven, no doubt the result of Mazda’s outstanding efforts in club and major league road racing.

You’ll quickly appreciate Mazda’s road racing cross pollination into its consumer offerings, especially when driving the CX-3 in Sport driving mode. Here, you will appreciate the fine shifting six-speed with a Sport mode automatic transmission that delivers computer controlled downshifting when you brake for a tighter and slower corner. Features like this usually don’t come in a sub-compact SUV, but then again, we go back to the fact that it is a Mazda and also that our tester came with traction hungry Yokohama Avid all-season 18-inch tires on lightweight “gun metal” alloy wheels. The suspension is a strut front and torsion beam rear.

Although not a drag strip terror, CX-3 relies on a 13-1 compression 2.0-liter four with direct fuel injection developing 146 horses and 146 lb. ft. of torque. Zero to 60 arrives in a bit over eight seconds thanks to a sub 3,000 lb. curb weight and use of lighter albeit stronger suspension components.

Granted, sub-compact does equate to tighter interior dimensions which mostly impacts rear seat leg room and cargo numbers. Still, the back seat is roomy enough for smaller adults while over six-footers had better hope one of the two front seat occupants is an individual who can move the front bucket forward.

The cabin, however, is well done and looks and feels great. Still, I still wish manufacturers would go back to radio tuning knobs that are easy to operate. Mazda CX-3 utilizes a circular control knob for channels and other info, while there is a separate knob for volume. The seating is very good, the instrumentation fine and the driver will also enjoy a head-up display like the more expensive vehicles on the road today as standard fare.

Of course, all of Mazda’s Skyactiv technology that Mazda continually enhances each year is standard across the line. Skyactiv incorporates a total motor vehicle concept of smaller engine, more power, better handling, better fuel mileage, secure body build and top safety appointments. CX-3 features four wheels ABS disc brakes, blind spot monitoring, rear safety camera, Skyactiv body ring structure (like a roll bar), all the traction and stability controls, hill launch assist, rear cross traffic alert, and all the airbags as standard fare.

Fuel mileage is good as two-wheel drive units deliver 29 city and 35 highway while our AWD Grand Touring is good for 27 city and 32 highway.

Four options included a mobile start ($550), rear bumper guard ($100), door sill plates ($100) and the recommended $1,920 GT i-Activsense package where intuitive radar cruise control, Smart City brake control, Smart brake support, lane departure warning, auto headlights, high beam control and rain sensing headlights all work in tandem. It’s worth the extra $1,920.

Important numbers include a wheelbase of 101.2-inches, curb weight of 2,952 lbs., 34.8 turning circle, 11.9 gallon fuel tank for 87 octane or greater, and from 12.4 to 44.5 cu. ft of cargo space depending n second row configuration.

The new 2016 Mazda CX-3 receives a Test Drive “Top Buy” in the sub-compact SUV/ Crossover/Wagon class, and we recommend starting with the entry Sport in AWD dress and then moving up according to your econo mic conditions.

Likes: Excellent handling, price, looks, Mazda technology.

PUMPKIN FRENCH TOAST BAKE 5-7 cups 1-inch bread cubes (crusty, whole grain) 7 large eggs 2 cups milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1-1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 3 to 4 tablespoons brown sugar for topping 1 cup pecans or walnuts (optional) Cut any kind of bread into 1-inch cubes to fill a lightly greased 9-by-13-inch baking dish quite full. Using a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, pumpkin puree and pie spice until well combined. Pour mixture over bread and push down with a spoon until the bread is thoroughly soaked and mostly covered. Cover with saran wrap or lid and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, preheat oven to 350°. Uncover and top with brown sugar, additional pumpkin pie spice and nuts (optional). Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown and bread is no longer wet.

Serve immediately with maple syrup, honey or agave nectar. Store leftovers in the refrigerator covered for up to a couple days.

Yield: 10 servings.

TURKEY BREAKFAST SAUSAGE 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup Fuji or Braeburn apple, peeled, shredded 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon dried rubbed sage 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 pounds ground turkey breast Cooking spray Heat oil in a nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add onion and apple; sauté 3 minutes. Add garlic; sauté 1 minute. Remove onion mixture from pan and cool completely.

Combine onion mixture, thyme, sage, salt, pepper and turkey, stirring well to combine.

Divide mixture into 24 equal portions, shaping each into a 1/2 - inch thick patty. Heat a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium heat. Add half of patties; cook

For glaze: For second layer: 1 cup powdered sugar In small bowl, gently mix milk and 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree or Bisquick. Slowly pour the mixture over the chicken making sure that all of the chicken is fresh pumpkin covered; do not stir.

HORSERADISH CREAM Spoon batter into muffin cups, filling 3/4 1 (7-1/2-pound) beef rib roast, full; do not overfill. (Do not add water or cover pan). Roast about 2-1/2 hours BAKED CHEESE BITES or until nicely browned and tender. Transfer 1 package mozzarella string cheese to cutting board and loosely cover roast with

1 cup skim milk 1-1/2 cups Italian bread crumbs 1 jar marinara sauce Preheat oven to 425°. Cut string cheese into 1-inch pieces. Add skim milk to a medium bowl and dip each piece of cheese into the milk to saturate the cheese. Next, pour the bread crumbs on a flat dish and roll each piece of cheese in the bread crumbs; make sure each piece is thoroughly in the Italian bread crumbs. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes. Serve with a side dish of marinara sauce for dipping. Yield: approximately 36 servings, depending on the amount of string cheese used.

GREEN TEA HONEY CAKE Cooking spray 2/3 cup sugar 4 large eggs 4 large egg yolks 1/3 cup fat-free milk 1/4 cup honey 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons green tea powder Preheat oven to 350º. Coat a 9-inch round cake pan with cooking spray; line bottom of pan with waxed paper. Coat waxed paper with cooking spray; set aside. Place sugar, eggs and yolks in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until thick and pale, about 6 minutes. Combine milk and honey in a small bowl; stir well with a whisk.

Add milk mixture to egg mixture, stirring well. Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Place flour in a small mixing bowl; add tea powder, stirring well with a whisk. Fold flour mixture into egg mixture in large bowl. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes on a wire rack; remove from pan. Cool completely on wire rack. Yield: 8 servings.

For the third time, Honesdale’s Roots & Rhythm Festival has received a Waste Watcher Award from the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP). This latest award applauds the festival for outstanding achievement from both PROP and the Keystone chapter of SWAN (Solid Waste Association of North America). Specifically, the 2016 Waste Watcher Award honors the recipients “for outstanding commitment to recycling, waste reduction and reuse in the state of Pennsylvania” for efforts in 2015.

“These awards continue to shine a light on our efforts,” said current festival Chair Deb Bailey, “Since 2010, we have made zerowaste a goal of the festival, and this year we were truly zeroing-in on zero.”

Roots & Rhythm’s Sustainability Team, led by Cheryl and Stu Badner of corporate waste consultants, uses a three-container system — marked trash/landfill, recyclables and food waste/compostables — to guide festival attendees to dispose of their waste products.

“Volunteers like ourselves direct and answer questions from festival-goers,” Cheryl Badner said, “so there is no confusion about what waste to put into what bin. And the system has paid off. Last year, we had only 320 pounds of trash.”

In the two years before the recycling program was launched in 2010, Badner pointed

out, Roots & Rhythm collected aggregated “garbage” of more than 4,200 pounds each year. In the six years since then, less and less trash has gone to the landfill. This year, the team collected 480 pounds of recyclables and 38 bags of food waste/compostables, compared to zero in each category in 2008 and 2009.

Roots & Rhythm won its first Waste Watcher Award for 2010, its second for 2013 and now, its third for 2015.

“We are really proud not only of our sustainability volunteers,” added Stu Badner, “but of all festival-goers and their willingness to take time to read the signs and dispose of their waste responsibly. In addition, we have been working closely with the food vendors who are also interested in helping the festival be zero waste by switching to only compostable or recyclable service ware.”

Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Music & Arts Festival, a non-profit free family event, is wholly supported by donations, corporate sponsors and grants from groups such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pocono Arts Council, the Villaume Foundation and the Wayne County Community Foundation. It draws up to 6,000 people into downtown Honesdale every year. The festival will celebrate its 12th year on June 17, 2017.

• Western Pocono Community Library is collecting grocery receipts from Mr. Z’s and Kinsley’s from within the past year. Mr. Z’s and Kinsley’s donate back to the library 1 percent of the amount of the receipt. • The Monroe Animal League (MAL) can now be contacted via email at monroeanimalleague@gmail.com. MAL sells Shoprite and Weis Markets gift cards in many denominations and receives 5 percent from each gift

card sale. Also, MAL collects Weis Markets and Kinsley’s Shoprite register tapes and Dad’s proof of purchase seals and receives 1 percent as proceeds of tape total. (You must send complete tape in order for credit).

• The Barrett Township Historical Society is planning to display a World War II exhibit at the Cresco Station Museum. Veterans and families with the following: memorabilia, artifacts, uniforms, weaponry, newspaper

articles and letters, are asked to consider aiding the society with this exhibit. All items loaned will be safeguarded and returned at the end of the exhibit season.
