With recipes from a diverse parish — members are of Polish, German and Lithuanian decent — Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 127 Stephenson St., Duryea has a history of making a variety of ethnic foods that folks have eagerly purchased for more than 70 years. The parish holds Lenten food sales each year, with the first sale to kick-off this year’s

effort on Friday, March 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Organizers explained that the funds are used for operating expenses of the parish, as well as capital improvements, education and community outreach. With a menu that will include potato pancakes, clam chowder, haluski, pizza (baked and unbaked), frozen pierogie (unprepared) and baked goods, the event is takeout or eat in. Only frozen pierogie, by the dozen, will be
available on Friday, March 6. Those organizing the event ask that, in the interest of fairness, those planning to attend do not call ahead, but instead show up, this way people can be served on a first-come basis. Some 81 people from the parish are involved in the yearly endeavor, with many working multiple shifts or several days in a row. And, as with most churches in the area, Nativity of Our Lord Parish welcomes additional volunteers to contact the church at (570) 457-3502.
