Organizers explained that the funds are used for operating expenses of the parish, as well as capital improvements, education and community outreach.

With a menu that will include potato pancakes, clam chowder, haluski, pizza (baked and unbaked), frozen pierogie (unprepared) and baked goods, the event is takeout or eat in. Only frozen pierogie, by the dozen, will be

available on Friday, March 6.

Those organizing the event ask that, in the interest of fairness, those planning to attend do not call ahead, but instead show up, this way people can be served on a first-come basis.

Some 81 people from the parish are involved in the yearly endeavor, with many working multiple shifts or several days in a row. And, as with most churches in the area, Nativity of Our Lord Parish welcomes additional volunteers to contact the church at (570) 457-3502.

The Lackawanna County Medical Society recently hosted a coat drive to benefit United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s (UNC) emergency food and clothing bank, Angel’s Attic. Coats were collected at member physicians’ offices and a cash donation was made from the Wright Center, who hosted a “Dress Down Day”.

SCRANTON — The latest fundraising techniques and methods for managing volunteers will be the topics for the first Lackawanna County Arts & Culture Department and Arts, Culture and Education Council workshop on March 19.

Tonyehn Verkitus, senior vice president of non-profit engagement for GiveGab, a social media site, will present “At the click of a Button: New Tools for Crowdgiving for Fund Raising and Volunteer Engagement by GiveGab” on Thursday, March 19, from 5:30-7 p.m., at the Entrepreneurial Launch Pad, 507 Linden St., Scranton.

Verkitus will be presenting on how local non-profits can benefit from GiveGab’s latest fund raising tools by managing key fundraising activities in addition to organizing volunteers.

The GiveGab site started in Lackawanna County and now has a national and international presence. It connects donors and volunteers with organizations that match their interested and offers tools that allows organizations to manage volunteers and donations. Editor: I am writing out of desperation and disbelief. What’s going on at Riverside? Our general fund is near zero, PSSAs below average, 20 percent of last year’s class did not graduate, strike, scandal, lawsuits, dilapidated facilities and the hiring process is laughable.

Here are some recent head turners: Dave Adomiak applied for head softball coach with more than 30 years experience, was furloughed from Riverside, has been the “voice of the Vikings forever,” and lifelong resident. Thanks, but no thanks!

It’s ridiculous! At places like Dunmore and Old Forge, they are led by people from there, allowing tradition and pride to strive, enabling success.

Recently a flag football game was held, with admission being canned goods. The canned goods collected were given to St. Pat’s church in West Side. Why, when we have a food pantry right here, along with local parishes that take donations?

Well, the vice principal who organized the event, a West Side product, is a member of St. Pat’s.

Our football players recently volunteered at St. Francis Soup Kitchen. Look it’s great that our youngsters are giving back, but you give back in your own community! The Invaders and Knights could handle the soup kitchen, but our coach is a West Scranton product. Neighboring districts have the same rules we do, yet they bend theirs to benefit their kids. Administration, board members are off to the left, athletic programs, coaches, are off to the right. We are getting to be like sissies, addressing every little complaint.

“It’s a lawyer’s world,” one official told me.

When I played and coached here we had tremendous success, primarily because we conducted practice regardless, and students were expected to be there regardless.

I talk about the Viking way, all that’s about is teaching kids, it’s not about “I and me” it’s about “us and we,” — that you cannot do anything without the person next to you, and that you just don’t run the race to be in the race, you run the race to win, preparing yourself daily to maximize your potential. Tradition and pride are dying because we don’t have people with the heart, passion, pride and energy it takes to

beat that drum every day. We have outsiders who don’t get it (check collectors).

Banquets are a real hoot, paper plates, beans and franks in the café, with athletes wearing dungarees, sneakers and hats. Everything needs to be done in a first-class manner, if you want to run a successful program. All honors banquet is a thing of the past, class day is laughable.

Currently the Viking ship is out at sea.

If things don’t change it will never come to port! I am sending out an S.O.S to you!

Chicken Dinner

AVOCA — Queen of the Apostles Parish will have its annual chicken dinner from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 15, in the parish hall in the former St. Mary’s School, 742 Spring St., Avoca.

The dinner includes a half of a chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetable, cole slaw, rolls and butter, homemade dessert and beverages. Takeouts will be available beginning at 11 a.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and younger. To purchase tickets, please call the parish office at 570-457-3412.

In addition to the dinner, there will also be a cash and theme basket raffles.

International Dinner

SCRANTON — St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church’s “International Dinner Club” will celebrate with an Irish Menu on Thursday, March 12, with seatings at 5:30 or 6:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per person and reservations can be made at 570-343-5151. The menu will have fresh baked Irish soda bread and Guinness onion soup served with Irish cheddar croutons, Irish pub salad and honey glazed corned beef served with purple potatoes and Irish colcannon (winter vegetable casserole).

More than 200 at Event

SCRANTON — United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC) recently celebrated the 15th year of its annual Mardi Gras fundraiser. However, 2015, brought many new changes to the event, including a name change to “Party Gras.” More than 200 guests and staff celebrated the spirit of New Orleans on Feb. 6 at the Radisson Lackawanna Station. The event raised more than $21,000 for Angel’s Attic, the largest total raised in the history of the event. Angel’s Attic provides more than 20,000 individuals each year with clothing, food and household items free of cost.

New music from the Indigo Moon Brass Band brought the jazz funk to the evening and a performance from mentalist John Graham entertained the audience. Also, everyone had access to the photo booth, fortune tellers, gaming tables hosted by WNEP’s Sharla McBride and southern-style cuisine including jambalaya.

OLD FORGE — Old Forge Tax Collector Gary Propersi reports that the 2015 Borough Taxes were mailed during the week of Feb. 16. Rebate period as shown on the statement will be in effect until Wednesday, April 15. Payments can be made daily at Peoples Security Bank, 216 S. Main Street, Old Forge or by mail to the tax office and a receipt will be mailed to those who enclose a self addressed, stamped envelope.

The Old Forge girls basketball team had no returning starters from last year’s state runner-up team, and had a new coach to boot.

But none of that ended up mattering as the Lady Devils captured their fourth straight District 2 Class A title last weekend, with first-year coach Ron Stacchiotti making sure the team played hard.

“As the year went on, and we started getting experience, they just meshed and we started playing well,” Stacchiotti said.

“We meshed as a team. I was happy with the way we fought, the way we competed.

I told everybody we would compete, but I didn’t know how many wins we would get, but we would compete, and we did.”

That competitive nature enabled seniors Kelci Yesnowski, Nicole Tagliaferri, Nina Pascolini and Tori Tansley to become the first Old Forge girls to earn four district basketball gold medals in school history.

Pascolini was the point guard who set the table for the Lady Devils while Tansley, the most experienced player back, was a scoring machine inside. It was when Yesnowski and Tagliaferri were knocking down three-point shots that saw Old Forge at its best.

Yesnowski stepped up and became a more consistent player as the season unfurled.

“The strong part of her game is her shooting, her three-point shooting,” Stacchiotti said. “She handles the ball well, when she’s pressured and she rebounds well, defensively.”

When the senior was at her best, it revved up the Lady Devils’ offense.

“She had good games, and when she started hitting her outside shot, that really opened up some stuff inside for Tori,” Stacchiotti said. “She started coming around a little before midway through the year, she started hitting her shots.

When she started hitting her shots, that’s when we started playing well.

“She had her ups and downs, but she came through with some big games at some crucial times. I expected her outside shooting to come around, and it did, and that’s when we took off.”

Tagliaferri added offense as well, keeping teams from completely focusing their defenses from collapsing around Tansley.

“Nicole had some good offensive games, like against Riverside in the first half, where she had like 11 points in the first quarter, hit 3 threes which nobody expected,” Stacchiotti said of the senior’s 13-point performance in Old Forge’s 6661 win at Taylor on Jan. 19. “Her threepoint shot came along.”

But what she added on offense was a bonus as the senior was a crucial defensive player for the Lady Devils.

“Her strong suit is her defense, and her hustle; she has the heart of a lion,” Stacchiotti said. “She just goes out and she plays hard, she gives you 110 percent every time she steps on the floor. Defensively, I look to her to be my defensive stopper.”

With junior Gabby Verespey completing the starting lineup, Old Forge has earned its way to another Class A state tournament, where a year ago a seniorladen team won four games before losing in the state final.

This year, the Lady Devils (12-10) open state play Saturday at Marywood University when they meet District 4 runner-up Millville (19-6) in a Class A game at 2:30 p.m.

Old Forge boys The Old Forge boys team also successfully defended its district title by beating MMI Prep in the district final for the second straight year to return to the state Class A tournament.

The Blue Devils (12-12) will play District 4 runner-up Middlebrook Christian (18-3) on Friday at 6 p.m. at Lackawanna College in their first-round state playoff game.

In order to expedite the registration process, please print out the forms provided at the links below and bring the completed forms with you to registration along with the required documentation listed above.

In order to facilitate the registration process, parents are asked to have all required documentation at time of registration. Registrations will not be complete until all the documentation is provided to the district.

Kindergarten Registration: Registration for the 2015-2016 school year for kindergarten will be held in the Old Forge High School auditorium on Tuesday, March 17 and Thursday, March 19.

Registration hours are between 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. on both days.

Children are eligible for kindergarten in the school district if they are five years of age on or before Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Catholic Church will sponsor the fifth annual ham bingo on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m. The event will be held in the church hall at 320 Vine St. Theme baskets, door prizes and various bingo specials will be available throughout the afternoon.

The kitchen opens at 11 a.m. A variety of food items and refreshments will be available. The church will also sponsor a bake sale during the bingo. Admission will be $3.

Egg Decoration: On Sunday, March 22 the Lackawanna Historical Society will host a pysanky egg demonstration at the Catlin House, 232 Monroe Ave., Scranton. The

demonstration will begin at 2 p.m.

Pysanky is a traditional Ukranian craft in which patterns are drawn on eggs with wax, which protects the egg when dye is applied.

The demonstration will be led by Tammy Budnovitch, who has been making pysanky since she was a child. She will demonstrate how to create pysanky, and will have premade eggs available for purchase.

Budnovitch is a member of S.S. Cyril and Methodius and has been teaching pysanky for several years.
