Burnley dinner adds Vegas experience

Burnley Employment & Rehab Services recently announced changes to its annual awards dinner and fundraiser. Each year, Burnley Employment & Rehab Services hosts a formal dinner to celebrate the workplace achievements of individuals with disabilities in the Poconos. Proceeds from the night assist Burnley with providing job training and employment opportunities to 100 individuals with disabilities daily. This year, Burnley’s special event comes with a twist. On April 5, Burnley will host Casino Night at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn in Stroudsburg. Officials say it will be an evening of fine dining and music, as well as Vegas-style table games, a silent auction and raffles. The table games — roulette, craps, blackjack and more — give guests the casino experience without

the risk; per Pennsylvania regulations, gaming at the event is for entertainment purposes only and no cash or prizes of cash value will be won. During the course of the evening, three special guests will be recognized through a video presentation and awards ceremony. The Employees of the Year are Holly Denny, Gregory Breslin and Kevin Herron, all of Stroudsburg. Denny and Breslin have been nominated for their work performance at Burnley’s Stroudsburg-based work facility. Kevin Herron, the Community Workshop Employee of the Year, is employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot. To purchase tickets or make a donation visit allied-services.org/rsvp-to-casino-night. For more information, call 570-814-4487 or email cwrigh@allied-services.org.

North Pocono among those receiving bleed control kits from Geisinger

Since January 2017, Geisinger trauma services has trained more than 10,000 people through the national Stop the Bleed program. Now, Geisinger is providing more than 2,300 bleeding control kits, including 1,073 kits to locations in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Monroe, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties, to further arm first responders and residents in the battle against blood loss. Containing plastic gloves, gauze, tourniquets and easy-to-follow instructions, the bleeding control kits are designed to be used by anyone to help control bleeding during a traumatic incident. According to the National Trauma Institute, 35 percent of fatalities occur due to blood loss before victims arrive at a hospital. Local schools, churches and public locations will receive wall-mounted bleeding control stations, containing eight bleeding control kits each. Individual kits are being provided to emergency responders, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and community groups. “Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death in someone who is injured,” said Dr. Brian Frank, Geisinger Community Medical Center trauma surgeon and co-chair of Geisinger’s Stop the Bleed program. “A person can bleed to death from an arterial bleed in 3 to 5 minutes. Being able to control or stop blood loss greatly increases

a victim’s survival chances.” The kits supplement the nationwide Stop the Bleed training program. Launched as a collaboration between the Department of Homeland Security, the White House and other agencies, Stop the Bleed trains ordinary citizens — and potential bystanders — how to help during a severe-bleeding incident before medical and emergency professionals arrive on scene. Since January 2017, Geisinger Trauma Services has trained 10,031 people through the program. Many organizations receiving kits have undergone training from Geisinger Trauma Services. In total, Geisinger is providing 2,387 kits (277 bleeding control stations and 171 individual kits) to organizations throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania. There are also 166 individual tourniquets being distributed to local law enforcement agencies. “No one expects to be involved in a traumatic incident,” said Dr. Denise Torres, trauma services director for Geisinger. “Trauma from vehicle crashes, industrial accidents and deep cuts or wounds at home are far more common than trauma from violent acts. Being able to recognize traumatic bleeding and controlling or slowing blood loss until emergency crews arrive is critical.” Geisinger trauma services offers free Stop the Bleed classes to organizations through-

out the year. Geisinger’s Stop the Bleed program is a joint effort of Geisinger emergency medicine, trauma services, trauma outreach, Life Flight and Geisinger EMS. To learn more about Stop the Bleed, contact Geisinger at stopthebleed@geisinger. edu. Organizations receiving bleeding control station and individual kits in northeastern Pennsylvania include: North Pocono Area School District: five bleeding control stations (40 kits); Pike County sheriff ’s office: one bleeding control station (eight kits); Pike County training center: one bleeding control station (eight kits); Pocono Mountain School District: eight bleeding control stations (64 kits); Stroudsburg Area School District: seven bleeding control stations (56 kits); Honesdale Boy Scouts: one individual kit; and Pleasant Mount EMS: two individual kits.

is also a good refresher course for veteran Streamwatchers. “These citizen scientists not only test for indicators of pollution, they also provide observations on the health of our streams,” said Bob Heil, BWA executive director. “With budget cuts at regulatory agencies, these volunteers are even more valuable.” If problems are discovered, BWA alerts regulatory agencies, such as the Department of Environmental Protection. At the training, volunteers will meet other Streamwatchers from the local watershed, learn what the program is all about and get hands-on training with the equipment. At that time, you can decide if Streamwatch is right for you. To register for either training session or if you have questions, contact the BWA office at 570-839-1120 or email info brodheadwatershed. org. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is preferred. Wine OK out of spotlight for French tradition of apéro BY DAVID FALCHEK ExEcutivE dirEctor of thE AmEricAn WinE SociEty

2017 Beaujolais Villages, fruit-forward with juicy plum character, is perfect. Beaujolais gets knocked for not having the structure of big reds, but every red wine doesn’t need to be like cabernet. $13. ★★★★ In France, cabernet franc is used as Bordeaux blender and occasionally as the star of some of the red wines of Loire, such as Saumur or Chinon. The lesser-known southern France region of Gard is promoting the lesser-known variety cabernet franc. The grape, which ripens irregularly, can develop vegetative, weedy character that turns off people. But with all the heat in the south to ripen the grapes, lack of ripeness is a non-issue and makes Domaine Mas Barrau 2017 Gard Cabernet Franc interesting. A smooth-textured wine with floral, earthy smells and rich black raspberry character comes at a great price. $9. ★★★★ Chateau Bonnet Bordeaux Blanc is a great introduction to the style. A blend of mostly sauvignon blanc and semillon, the wine is floral with green apple, a touch of citrus and refreshing acidity. $15. ★★★★ Wine doesn’t need to be expensive, and it doesn’t need to be the center of attention when looking for a quick glass at apéro.

A friend of mine recently hosted apéro, a light nosh and nod to a French custom of the same name where people gather for appetizers or small plates sometime between the conclusion of work and the night. We could call it happy hour with small plates. If you consider that the typical French person may not sit down to dinner until 8 or 9 p.m., a bite to eat (and of course some wine) is not a bad idea. You will see bars there busy around 5 or 6, not with diners but with munchers and sippers. Restaurants generally don’t open until much later. Often, apéro is accompanied by beer or a cocktail. The tradition has been questioned lately for, it is believed, encouraging drinking and driving. However, most French are prudent in their wine consumption. In large- and midsized French cities, robust public transportation makes it easy to live and work without operating a vehicle at all. The group at our apéro brought cheese and meat plates, olives, salad, finger foods and the sort of widely available, affordable French wines that so often provide a back- GRADE: Exceptional ★★★★★ Above average ground to unwind and talk. ★★★★, Good ★★★, Below average ★★, Poor For a quick glass with charcuterie, Jadot ★.

Fixed Rate CD

Annual Percentage Yield for 11 months2

Both accounts are FDIC-insured up to the maximum allowable limit. Platinum Savings offer available in AL and PA. Fixed Rate CD offer available in AL, AZ, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NM, NV, NY, PA, SC and VA. Portfolio by Wells Fargo® customers are eligible to receive an additional interest rate bonus on these accounts.3 1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: AL and PA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in AL with an account balance of $0.01 to $24,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY), $25,000 to $49,999.99 is 0.10% (0.10% APY), $50,000 to $99,999.99 is 0.15% (0.15% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.20% (0.20% APY); and for Platinum Savings account in PA with an account balance of $0.01 to $49,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY), $50,000 to $99,999.99 is 0.05% (0.05% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.10% (0.10% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC), and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed.
