The Hit Men arrive at F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, 71 Public Square, Wilkes-Barre, on Friday, April 28, as part of the group’s Time Travel Tour.

Ticket prices range from $25 to $45.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

The Hit Men, performers who toured and recorded with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Tommy James and the Shondells, Carly Simon, Carole King, Elton John, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce and more, celebrate the best years of rock ‘n’ roll.

Since forming in 2010, the five-man group has toured America playing classic hits. Additionally, their show includes rare anecdotes about moments recording and playing with famous musicians.

Scranton-based comedian Joe Ohrin serves as opening act.

MoonlighT walK/run

On Saturday, April 29, Children’s Advocacy Center of NEPA’s 13th annual Moonlight Walk/Run presents the opportunity to workout in the moonlight while supporting a great cause.

The 5K walk and 5K/10K runs travel through Nay Aug Park and start across from the Everhart Museum, located at 1901 Mulberry St., Scranton.

Registration begins at 5 p.m. A children’s fun run occurs at 6, followed by the start of the 5K walk at 6:30 and the 5K/10K runs at 7.

Registration costs $30 for 5K events and $35 for the 10K event. On the day of the walk/run, costs for each event rise by $5. Registration includes a food voucher and beverages as well as a guarantee of a T-shirt for pre-registered participants.

The fastest male and female runners in various categories receive awards.

Children’s Advocacy Center of NEPA’s supports children who have experienced physical and sexual abuse and neglect.

norTheasT pa hearT walK

The Northeast PA Heart Walk seeks to fight heart disease and strokes on Saturday, April 29, at PNC Field, 235 Montage Mountain Road, Moosic.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 10. There is no fee to walk. Walkers receive a Heart Walk T-shirt after raising a minimum of $100 and become eligible for prizes based on fundraising levels.

The family- and pet-friendly event also includes activities for participants of all ages and a bicycle raffle for children who participate in the Heart Walk.

This year’s child chair is Matthew Mursch of Scranton, a 5-year-old congenital heart defect survivor. Money raised at the event supports the American Heart Association’s mission to fight against cardiovascular diseases and strokes.

reaper’s halFway To halloween hullabaloo

Spring has sprung, and the devious minds from Reaper’s Revenge Haunted Hayride aim to bring the dead back to life with the Halfway to Halloween Hullabaloo set for Saturday, April 29, starting at 8 p.m. at the Leonard Theater, 335 Adams Ave., Scranton.

Admission is $5 and guests ages 21 and up need proper ID to be served. The evening features music by DJs Royce, Hostyle and K-One plus a costume contest. The Reaper’s Revenge makeup team also will be on hand to help guests get into character. Nuclearbane will have merchandise for sale plus giveaways.

Proceeds from the event benefit the 2017 season at the haunted attraction. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

eleCTriC CiTy CoCKTail wars Hosted by POSH at the Scranton Club, 404 N. Washington Ave., the fourth installment of Electric City Cocktail Wars lets attendees cast their vote for favorite cocktail and sample various drinks on Tuesday, May 2.

The grand prize winner of the bartendercocktail contest receives $1,000, but all who attend have to chance to try more than 20 great drinks. Additionally, door prizes are available for the first 250 attendees.

The event is organized by and benefits Scranton Tomorrow’s Main Street Scranton project, a nonprofit that strives to assist in the economic revitalization of the downtown.

LOS CAMPESINOS — “Sick Scenes” THE GOOD: Welsh indie rockers Los Campesinos regroup and release their sixth.

THE BAD: No Los album is a masterpiece. Every collection comes with both violent bits of youthful exuberance and misguided self-indulgent passages. Recorded in Portugal with longtime collaborator John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Blonde Redhead), “Sick Scenes” follows that pattern.

THE NITTY GRITTY: Fans also have to come to grips with the fact that lyricist Gareth David and all the wild kids next door are getting older and

their songs are maturing. The contemplative “The Fall of Home,” with its bouts of insecurity and loneliness, would have felt out of place on 2008’s blistering “Hold on Now, Youngster.”

Thankfully, “Scenes” is not an entirely calm affair — far from it. Tracks such as the stomping “Sad Suppers” and the jittery “5 Flucloxacillin” still rip up the room while David spits out his usual lyrical vitriol. Just be prepared for some more ambitious arrangements and experimentation across the album’s second half. You have to at least pretend to grow up sometime.

BUY IT?: Yeah.

CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH — “The Tourist” songwriter/brains-behind-the-operation Alec Ounsworth. But that’s not a bad thing, for “Tourist” is THE GOOD: Philadelphia-based indie rockeasily his most satisfying set of songs in a decade. ers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (now a “brand”

as opposed to an actual band) come back with a focused fifth.

Producing music light years away from the disco-fied goofiness of “Satan Said Dance,” Ounsworth now brings a new intensity to the table by injecting some personal trauma into the work.

The drama adds danger, yet “Tourist” finds the man coming out the other end relatively unscathed.

Long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) adds some sonic meat to the mix as well. The end result is rich and serious with solid melodies to boot, thanks to tracks such as “Better Off” and “The Vanity of Trying” even resembling some of Radiohead’s more infectious moments.

BUY IT?: Yes. COLD WAR KIDS — “L.A. Divine” THE GOOD: California indie rockers Cold War Kids come back with their sixth.

THE NITTY GRITTY: It’s easy to write reviews about records that are either amazing or dreadful. The toughest reviews are ones about records that are just “there.” That mundane description pretty much sums up the entire CWK catalog. None of their albums are outright terrible. The band’s jittery mix of rock and indie pop with a smattering of soul isn’t all that disagreeable.

Frontman Nathan Willett and his crew have even come up with a few semi-cool gems along the way. There was the group’s debut underground hit “Hang Me Out To Dry,” followed by all those variations of … “Hang Me Out To Dry.” “L.A. Divine” is the boys’ sixth set, but it may as well be their second or their fourth. If you like these guys, by all means, indulge. If you don’t, the new album won’t change any established opinions.

BUY IT?: Whatever. I’m bored.

ifty years after the release of “Pet Sounds,” the album’s composer and primary vocalist treats fans to a tour full of good vibrations before muting the record.

Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson kicked off an international tour of the 1966 album at the beginning of last year, only to extend the tour for an additional 37 shows this year.

And Wilkes-Barre made the cut.

Wilson brings his “Pet Sounds: The Final Performances” tour to the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts Tuesday, May 2, at 8 p.m. as a part of the venue’s PNC Celebrity Series.

“We do it on stage exactly like the record,” Wilson said in a recent phone interview. “We duplicate it.”

For longtime Beach Boys fans, this concert will be one for the ages, as Wilson said this is the last tour he will perform “Pet Sounds” in full. Joining him on the tour are former Beach Boys members Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin.

Although the tour marks the 50th anniversary of the album, Wilson said it feels like just yesterday when it was released.

“I think the harmonies and the melodies are what people like most,” he said.

According to the California native, the trio performs “Pet Sounds” in full during each show, while also highlighting a number of other Beach Boys favorites, including favorites such as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows” and “Caroline, No.” Due to his unique approach to song composition, Wilson is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential figures in popular music. He co-wrote, arranged, produced and performed more than two dozen Top 40

hits with the Beach Boys. “Pet Sounds” was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, along with

the singles “I Get Around” in 2017, “California Girls” in 2011, “In My Room” in 1999 and “Good Vibrations” in 1994.

“The day we recorded ‘Good Vibrations’ was the highlight of my life,” Wilson said. “The guys said, ‘Hey Brian, this is going to be a No. 1 record.’”

Wilson’s life was recently documented in the critically-acclaimed 2014 film, “Love & Mercy,” starring Paul Dano and John Cusack. The 74-year-old also released his second book in October, “I Am Brian Wilson: A Memoir.”

He said he still pulls inspiration from people and music around him, including his

wife, Paul McCartney and the late Chuck Berry.

Even though this tour marks the final one for “Pet Sounds,” Wilson said he is nowhere near ready to retire from performing.

“Well I have to do something to look good,” he joked. “I might record a record later on this year. I haven’t written for a few years, but I’m going to be getting back into it soon.”

An annual beer tasting event will feel — and taste — a bit different this year.

Electric City Craft Brew Fest not only offers more than 100 types of craft beer, but, for the first time, guests also have the chance to grab a bite from local food trucks and peruse wares from locals vendors. Brew Fest takes place Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, at Montage Mountain’s lodge, 100 Montage Mountain Road.

“We want to keep growing the event,” Jeff Slivinski, Montage Mountain director of marketing, said. “We know by now people are expecting a certain craft beer style and offering food and more things to do is only going to elevate that.”

Food vendors like Peculiar Culinary Company, Notis the Gyro King, Jerkey Hut, Sweet Lush Cupcakery plus about a dozen more will serve up their specialities for the crowd while it samples brews from all over the country. Guests can look around and shop items from local retail vendors like AOS Metals, On A Whim Jewelry, Jerky Hut, Keystone Cheese Farms and more.

Ballet theatre of scranton gives new life to ‘dracula’ love story for one-night-only show

allet Theatre of Scranton sinks its teeth into a classic tale for its latest production.

The troupe’s senior company presents “Dracula” for one night only, Saturday, April 29, at 7:30, in the Theater at North, 1539 N. Main Ave., Scranton.

But preparations for the ballet began in the midst of winter, as the show’s creators, Katya and Arkadiy Orohovsky, ventured to the city from their Mississippi home for nine days to set up the production with the cast.

“It’s been crazy,” Katya Orohovsky said during those rehearsals. “They pick up really quickly, very enthusiastically.”

The couple saw a few ballet versions of “Dracula” through the years, but never any they identified with. Then they heard music from 20thcentury Ukrainian composers that incorporated that country’s folk songs, and they developed their own version of the story using that music.

“It’s so appropriate,” Ballet Theatre artistic director Joanne Arduino said. “Some of the melodies are just haunting. It’s really a perfect selection for this ballet. (In) one of the scenes, there’s Romanian folk dance, so it has some very rousing music. It has some beautiful, romantic music.”

hovsky called a “more family-friendly” story — less horror and more heart. The dancers play up the love story between Dracula and young Mina. “(We) wanted to tell a little bit of the history and a little more of the romanticism,” Katya Orohovsky said.

Arduino called “Dracula” a well-known, timeless story she believes audiences will enjoy because of how Ballet Theatre chose to portray it this time.

“We’re sort of billing it as it’s not the gory story of Dracula that everybody thinks,” she said.

“It’s really a haunting love story. Granted, it’s still ‘Dracula.’ There’s still his story, but we are focusing on his love story.”

The tale became more believable and reso-

nated with audiences as a result of those changes, according to Arkadiy Orohovsky. When the couple first staged the show with their studio in Ohio in 2007, they saw how the audience connected to the character.

“A lot of people cried at the end, which was surprising,” Katya Orohovsky said.

The Orohovskys revived the show in Mississippi a few years later with their company there, and this marks the first time the couple staged it for someone else. Katya Orohovsky said “it’s been really nice kind of brushing it off.”

“I’m really happy that our ballet is going to stay alive,” her husband said.

Taking on the lead is professional dancer and Ballet Theatre veteran Colin Bolthouse, while Jerica Tallo, another longtime Ballet Theatre dancer, portrays Mina.

“With the costumes and the lighting and the sets, it’s just going to be exceptional,” Arduino said.

“And we’re all excited about it.”

Since the choreography “is not really set in stone,” Katya Orohovsky said, she and her husband could tailor the moves for Ballet Theatre’s dancers.

Arduino believes it is good for her crew to work with different choreographers, noting how the Orohovskys brought “some interesting concepts.” The couple fit in well with the Ballet Theatre family, she added, calling Arkadiy Orohovsky “very easygoing.”

“He wants them to just express themselves and have a good time with their roles,” Arduino said.

Arkadiy Orohovsky said he and his wife enjoyed working with Arduino and her team and are happy with how Ballet Theatre took the show forward.

“I think it’s going to be a great ballet,” he said.

Arduino expects Ballet Theatre will bring “Dracula” back to the stage again one day.

“This is a new work; it’s classical yet contemporary,” she said. “There are a few of those that we have done throughout the years at Ballet Theatre that have been loved by the audience but also loved by the dancers, and this, I think, is one of them.”

The event functions as a marketplace with a variety of local vendors, and Scranton native and celebrity stylist Marni Senofonte will be curate her must-have looks for the season and talk about her career working with the likes of Beyoncé, Ciara, Jay Z, Nicki Minaj and Lauryn Hill.

Senofonte rose to prominence in her field after a stint as designer Norma Kamali’s assistant and working partnerships with brands such as Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and more. She maintains a large international audience on her popular Instagram account, @marnixmarni, where she models high-end fashions. Her mother, Kathee Sonofonte, spearheads Petal Share PA as its program director and brought her daughter into the fold to make the event a marquis happening.

Fashion & Compassion also is a NEPA Match Day event, with a guarantee from Scranton Area Community Foundation to match proceeds up to $1,000.

“THE PROMISE” HHH

The events of “The Promise” transpire some 30 years prior to the storyline of “Casablanca,” but we can’t help but be reminded of the latter film when we witness this love triangle set against the backdrop of the horrors of a world war.

Of course nobody ever says, “I’m no good at being noble, but it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.” But there’s a moment when Christian Bale’s antihero American journalist seems to be thinking exactly that as he and Oscar Isaac’s medical student compete for the love of Charlotte Le Bon’s Armenian-French teacher.

Two men in love with the same woman, who is torn between her loyalty to one and the intense feelings she has for the other. That would be complicated enough, but considering matters unfold just as Turkey is entering World War I, leading to the Armenian Genocide in which some 1.5 million people were murdered by the Turkish government, and that all three of the main players get caught up in one harrowing and often heartbreaking situation after another, this is one intense and draining (and sometimes plausibility-stretching) story.

Speaking with a precise, nearly delicate Armenian accent, Isaac’s Michael narrates the sweeping story, which begins with him working as an apothecary and aspiring doctor in his small and peaceful village.

Michael agrees to marry a local girl because

her father’s dowry is the only way he’ll be able to pay for medical school. He doesn’t love her, but he figures that will come with time.

(We want to tell the guy: “Stop brooding, Michael. You’re being set up with Angela Sarafyan, who plays one of the impossibly beautiful robots in ‘Westworld.’ And her character of Maral is sweet, kind, loving and pretty much all-around wonderful.

You should be so lucky.”)

Velvet pouch of money in hand, Michael sets out for Constantinople and the opulent home of his father’s cousin, a local merchant. There it takes all of about one week for Michael to fall completely in love with Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), who tutors his cousin’s children and thus is always conveniently hanging around the house.

Ah, but Ana is with Christian Bale’s Chris, a brave, macho, famous, globetrotting American journalist with the Associated Press. Even though Chris drinks too much, shoots his mouth off too often and has a fiery temper, he’s got a noble heart, and his love for Ana is fierce. Chris is smart enough to see there’s an intense spark between Ana and Michael, but he’s not about to give her up without a fight.

Meanwhile, Michael is torn about his feelings for Ana, because he DID make a promise to Maral back home, and he takes that pledge seriously.

The romantic complications often take a back seat once the focus shifts to the outbreak of war.

Chris rides into the thick of things as a war correspondent, Ana desperately tries to protect more than a dozen orphaned children, and Michael’s attempt to save his father’s cousin results in Michael

landing in a prison work camp, where he will toil until he drops dead.

Director and co-writer Terry George (who delivered a much more powerful film about genocide with “Hotel Rwanda” in 2004) is a master at delivering unforgettable set pieces, as when Michael finds himself clinging to the side of a speeding train in the dead of night and comes to realize the train cars are filled with Armenian prisoners being sent to their death.

Isaac’s Michael is the primary focus, but for long stretches the film concentrates on Bale’s Chris, who becomes a much more sympathetic and complex character when he’s on his own and he’s not railing against Ana for her betrayal or shooting withering glances at Michael. Even when Chris’ heart is shattered, he’s the kind of man who puts his personal feelings aside and risks all for the greater good.

The coincidences in “The Promise” are too frequent. (Chris and Ana and Michael, or some combination thereof, always seem to be able to find each other, even in the midst of utter chaos.) The melodrama is a little too heavy-handed at times.

And for a movie that clocks in at 134 minutes, all of a sudden it feels as if we’re rushing through the conclusion to a touching epilogue that might have been even more effective had it been given a little more real estate.

Yes, “The Promise” veers into corny territory, and yes, it’s derivative of better war romances, but it’s a solid and sobering reminder of the atrocities of war, bolstered by strong performances from Isaac and Bale, two of the best actors of their generation.

“The Founder” (Biography, PG-13, 115 m., 2017). The casting of the eminently likable Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc, the sometimes unethical man who turned the McDonald brothers’ burger joint into a national fast-food powerhouse, is a stroke of genius. This whip-smart, breezy, sunny and yet also darkly funny slice of Americana is the first great movie I’ve seen in 2017. Rating: HHHH “Split” (Thriller, PG-13, 117 m., 2017). James McAvoy does wonders with the role of a man with 23 personalities who abducts three teenage girls.

You might just find yourself applauding during certain moments of dramatic triumph in the unabashedly sentimental and wonderfully inspirational story of three black female mathematicians (Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae) who worked for NASA in the 1960s.

Half of “Lion” is about a boy in India separated from his family, and half is about his quest to find them as an adult (Dev Patel), and each is remarkable in its own way. It’s a magical tale grounded in reality, sure to reduce most moviegoers to tears that are honestly and legitimately earned. Rating: HHH 1/2 “Paterson” (Comedy drama, R, 115 m., 2017).

The latest film by writer-director Jim Jarmusch is

about one week in the life of a bus driver named Paterson (Adam Driver, in maybe his most interesting screen performance to date) who lives in Paterson, New Jersey, and wants to be a poet. It’s a fable, brimming with symbolism and inside literary references, but also authentic and plausible, in its own weird way.

“Office Christmas Party” (Comedy, R, 105 m., 2016). Despite the eminently likable cast, featuring such reliable talents as Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston and T.J. Miller, this is one of those loud, forced, party-hard movies where everyone onscreen is trying their best to convince us we’re watching a zany, edgy romp — but the antics come across as juvenile and tired. Mr. Hanni, (rhymes with “Can I?”) also wants to wine “fashionistas” to stop making sweet wine drinkers feel flawed and backwards.

What Mr. Hanni has to say in his book “The Sweet Wine Lover’s Manifesto” actually counts. He is a master of wine — a sort of Jedi Knight of wine — the second from America to attain the designation, and also a chef and culinary historian.

Dry wines are a relatively new phenomenon, he points out. As a chef, he found expertly created wine and food pairings repulsed some people. As science came to know more about genetics, sensory and perception, he began creating his thesis of “vinotypes.” We are genetically predisposed to like certain wines. If God doesn’t make mistakes, then why do wine writers and educators make sweet wine drinkers feel defective?

Mr. Hanni realized everyone lives in their own sensory world. He resolved to never tell anyone what to like or how to enjoy it.

I watched Mr. Hanni pull what appeared to be parlor trick at a presentation last month. After a sweet wine drinker identified herself, Mr. Hanni went on to ask her about cutting tags out of her clothes (she did) and how many rescue animals she had (two). Tactile sensitivity, empathy and sweet wine, it seems, share a chromosome.

I asked a friend who works at Cornell University about Mr. Hanni’s thesis. Scientists clench their fists and grit their teeth when they hear Mr. Hanni’s selective and loose reading of fast-evolving scientific understand, she said. Wine taste makers richly deserve Mr. Hanni’s pointed criticism, to be sure.

But, I don’t think biology is destiny. Nearly all Americans start out drinking sweet and many gravitate to dry. Mr. Hanni thinks these are closeted sweet wine drinkers, pressured to convince themselves they like dry wines.

I view wines for their utility, not their prestige.

Sweet wines often hit the spot. I tried a few.

German sweet riesling tend to be balanced with acidity. So it is with the blue-bottle Schmitt Sohne relax riesling that smells of lime jelly candies with flavors of dried apricot and lime and a tartness. Nothing to be ashamed of for loving this tasty, balanced, affordable wine. $12. HHHH 1/2 Beringer main & Vine Chenin Blanc, however, falls short, a flabby wine neither acidic nor sweet enough. Some ripe grape skin and light peach character. I’d try sweet chenins from South Africa or Vouvray. $8. HHH Fruit salad in a glass, mirassou 2015 California moscato is full vibrant honeydew and tropical character. So very low in alcohol, just seven percent, makes it almost as much of a decadent fruit juice as a wine. $10. The opposite of elegant, this is bawdy, rich wine that shows a swath of fruit flavor, root beer, and sweetness without much structure. $10. HHH

Germany is well known for their beer and for good reason. There are a great many styles that can be attributed to the country, each region contributing something unique and awesome to the collective hole. Sure, there is the Marzen that we all know so well, but what about the sour Gose, or Rye beers? They are far from a one-trick pony.

While our brewing tradition in the United States tends to focus largely on the hops, Germany is all about the malt. This shouldn’t be surprising from the country that made the pretzel famous. They really know how to make that grain sing, which is apparent in so many of their brews.

This week, I’m drinking a beer that is quite the mix of styles. First, it is a Berliner Weissbier, a style which uses wheat in addition to malt and is cloudy and white with sour notes to it. Germany also has smoked beers, which refers to the malt being toasted over an open flame. All of this is blended with peaches to produce Smuttlabs Smoked Peach Short Weisse. I can only hope their beer is a much a mouthful as its name.

It should be noted that this one has been sitting on my shelf for a while. through the muck. The haziness is a common attribute to all wheat beers, as the wheat tends to break down and leave a good deal of solid particulate in the brew. There wasn’t much in the way of head, just a slight fizz noise giving hint of any carbonation. It’s hard to tell if this is due to age or just the brew itself.

The scent certainly conveys the sour and peach. There is a bit of yeast floating around as well and just a tiny hint of floral. All of this sits on a backbone of biscuit, a smell that gives away its wheat and malt leanings.

The taste had many things going on in it. The peach makes itself known without being artificial or grossly sweet, as some fruit beers can do.

Combined with its very particular type of sourness, it really reminded me of peach yogurt, that sort of fermented creaminess somehow sharing flavors with the brew. The smoke was subtle, but did a great job of rounding out the sweeter parts of it, hitting the back of the tongue in a similar way as hops do, yet being completely different. It is a bit acidic, which is understandable. The wheat drives it all together, like the crust on a pie.

Smoked Peach Short Weisse does a lot of interesting things. The blending off all these different components is not an exercise in excess, but instead is well balanced with all of the nuances taking up the space they need to. If you can still find a bottle of this, grab it. It’s a great German brew for spring.

Peter Ventura is the co-owner and operator of Coney Island Lunch in Scranton. He operates the business with his brother, Bob. The family-run business was first opened by their grandfather in 1923. Peter first began working there regularly in 1972, when he was a junior in high school. A native of Scranton, he is a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. He lived in Spring Brook Township for 25 years and has lived in Clarks Summit since 2006. He and his wife, Kathryn, have two sons, Mark and John.

Biggest pet peeve?

All of the years I’ve been here, and I’m 62 years old, I can’t stand it when people put Scranton or this area down. I won’t get mad at them, but I’ll tell them about all of the good things. I’ll say, “We might have had some trying times here and there, but it’s not like what you’re saying.” That’s my pet peeve. Don’t badmouth Scranton if you’re going to talk to me, because it’s been good to me.

Though you literally grew up around a family business and have helped run the business for more than 30 years, was there ever a time when you thought you might do something else? Or did you always know this is where you wanted to be?

Actually, my second year out of high school, I was going to join the military. I had everything filled out and was ready to go. I went to Wilkes-Barre to be sworn in, and I changed my mind. And they left me there. They wouldn’t give me a ride back to Scranton. I had to call my father, and he came and got me. Needless to say, he was happy. That was my only adventure outside. I started working for my grandfather when I was eleven years old. I mean, you can’t actually consider it “working” when you’re family, but I came down on a Saturday, and he needed the floor mopped or something, and he gave me 50 cents. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but I was able to buy five packs of baseball cards, a 16 oz. bottle of Coke and a big bag of chips. And that was the kicker. Having money. All of these years, the business has always been good to me.

PETER VENTURA What do you still enjoy about it the most?

I can’t really say that I’ve had some bad days here. Generally, the people that come in every day — and there are actually people that come in every day — I like talking with them. I’m a talker. Baseball, politics … I’m the perfect person for this kind of business. A lot of times, you’ll get a business, and if they can’t deal with the public, they’re not going to make it. Whereas a guy like me, I love it.

I can watch “Downton Abbey,” and I’ll start crying during the crying scenes. I’m a big guy, but if there are sad parts in movies, like a sad scene in “The Green Mile,” I’ll start bawling. My wife will be sitting there and I’ll try to hide it, but I have a soft spot. I don’t cry when I’m making hot dogs.

Caveheart I’m a woman in my 30s. I love parties and talking to people and thank God, because I attend networking events for work. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is an introvert, hates talking to strangers and loathes “shindigs.” How do we balance my longing to go to parties with his desire to stay home?

— Party Girl Taking an introvert to a party can be a challenge. On the other hand, if it’s a Fourth of July party, you know where to find him: hiding in the bathtub with the dogs.

I actually have personal experience in this area. Like you, I’m an extrovert — which is to say, a party host’s worry isn’t that I won’t have anyone to talk to; it’s that I’ll tackle three people and waterboard them with sangria till they tell me their life story. Also like you, I have a boyfriend who’s an introvert. For him, attending a party is like being shoved into an open grave teeming with live cockroaches — though, compassionately, it also includes an open bar.

This isn’t to say introverts are dysfunctional. They’re not. They’re differently functional. Brain imaging research by cognitive scientist Debra L. Johnson and her colleagues found that in introverts, sensory input from experience

led to more blood flow in the brain (amounting to more stimulation). The path it took was longer and twistier than in extroverts and had a different destination: frontal areas we use for inward thinking like planning, remembering and problem-solving. So, introverts live it up, too; they just do it on the inside.

Extroverts’ brain scans revealed a more direct path for stimuli — with blood flowing straight to rear areas of the brain used for sensory processing, like listening and touching. They also have less overall blood flow — translating (in combination with a different neurochemical response) to a need for more social hoo-ha to feel “fed.”

Sometimes, you’ll really want your boyfriend there with you at a party — for support, because you enjoy his company, or maybe just to show him off (kind of like a Louis Vuitton handbag with a penis). But understanding that “shindigs” give his brain a beating, consider whether you could sometimes take a friend. When he accompanies you, maybe set a time limit and be understanding if he and the dog retreat to the den.

Sure, mingling makes you feel better, but pushing an introvert to do it is akin to forcing an extrovert to spend an entire week with only the cat and a fern. Before long, they’re

on with the cable company. Tech support: “What seems to be the problem?” Extrovert: “I’m lonely! Talk to me! Have you ever been arrested? And do you think I should go gluten-free?” rubbin hood I grabbed my boyfriend’s phone to look something up and I found a Google search for local massage places that offer “happy endings.” He says that he and his friends were just goofing off. Am I an idiot to believe him?

— Disturbed His “goofing off” is reminiscent of the “but I was just curious!” web searches that juries hear about — stuff like “Does arsenic have a flavor?” “How much antifreeze does it take to kill a 226.5-pound man?” and “Who’s got the lowest prices on shovels and tarps?”

Sure, it’s POSSIBLE that your boyfriend is telling the truth — that he and his buddies were searching out massage parlors RIGHT NEARBY! just for a giggle. To determine how likely it actually is, consider that people don’t behave randomly. We’re each driven by a varying combo of personality traits — habitual patterns of thinking, emotion and behavior that are relatively consistent over time and across situations. For example, an introvert will not suddenly become a party animal (unless we’re talking the taxidermied kind that’s stuck into the “fall leaves” centerpiece).

Research by evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Todd Shackelford found three personality traits that

are strong “predictors of susceptibility to infidelity.” One is narcissism — being self-absorbed, admiration-seeking, empathy-deficient and prone to scheming userhoood. Being low on “conscientiousness” is another — reflected in being disorganized, unreliable and lazy and lacking self-control.

Last, there’s “psychoticism,” which, despite its Bates Motel-like moniker, reflects a con artist-like exploitativeness, impulsivity and lack of inhibition — not necessarily exhibiting those things while going all stabby on some lady enjoying a shower.

Consider whether your boyfriend’s “just Googling for kicks!” claim is odd and uncharacteristic or whether it’s part of a pattern reflecting one or more of the lovely cocktail of traits above. Patterns of behavior predict future patterns of behavior — for example, trying to get you to believe that he only goes to strip clubs for the music and that he really was just working late with his boss, Mr. Camerino, who seems to have developed quite a thing for body glitter.
