Montrose ChoColate anD Wine festival

Chestnut Street in downtown Montrose fills with food, drinks and music for the 10th annual Montrose Chocolate and Wine Festival on Saturday, May 20.

Gates are open from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., regardless of weather. Presale tickets are $20. Tickets at the gate are $30 or $10 for non-drinking guests ages 16 and over. Wine-tasting participants must provide a valid ID to gain entry to the festival.

Attendees receive complementary wine glasses at the gate. The festival features 75 vendors for wine tasting and chocolate. Musical acts Driftwood, Woodshed Prophets, the Bones of J.R. Jones and Canary Circus provide entertainment all day long.

The festival also marks the opening of the latest exhibit at the Butternut Gallery, which features works by local artists.

Proceeds from ticket sales and donations benefit Montrose community projects, such as the Endless Mountain Health System, the Montrose Library and Early Education Projects.

traveling broke anD out of gas at the keys

As part of a Northeast tour, Indiana-based band Traveling Broke and Out of Gas arrives at the Keys, 244 Penn Ave., Scranton, for a night of music supported by local acts.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the music starts at 8.

There is a $3 cover.

Originally formed as a husband-and-wife duo, the group has since expanded in size and released three albums of folk-inspired sounds. The band delivers a passionate live act that includes songs inspired by social justice, sustainability, human rights, freedom, family, cooperation and love.

Supporting the band on Friday night are WilkesBarre-based acts the Charming Beards and Kali Ma and the Garland of Arms.

M.J. Dougherty’s reD uMbrella tour

Actor, author and speaker M.J. Dougherty arrives on Sunday, May 21, at Lackawanna College, 501 Vine St., Scranton, as part of his Red Umbrella Tour.

Tickets are $10 in advance and free for children and students. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15. The “Red Umbrella Carpet” starts at 2:30 p.m.

Dougherty, originally from Clarks Summit and currently living in Los Angeles, released his memoir, “Life Lessons from a Total Failure,” to high praise last year.

The Red Umbrella Tour features Dougherty sharing stories from Northeast Pennsylvania, Hollywood and his life in general.

Dougherty’s talk will be followed by a Q&A, book signing and light refreshments. Books will be available for purchase at event.

Donn’s Dash runraiser at the susquehanna breWing Co.

On Thursday, May 18, the Susquehanna Brewing Co. hosts Donn’s Dash RunRaiser for a night of beer, food and raffle prizes to benefit a good cause.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The fundraiser starts at 6 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter, and will help provide assistance to ALS patients and their families throughout Northeast Pennsylvania.

The event is organized by Donn’s Dash 5K Run, which hosts its third annual race and fun run this June in Wilkes-Barre.

The Radisson Lackawanna Station hotel, 700 Lackawanna Ave., Scranton, hosts the Northeastern Pennsylvania Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, May 20.

NOT-TOO-GENTLE BREEZES

EISLEY – I’m Only Dreaming THE GOOD: Texas indie rock band Eisley come back with their fifth album.

THE BAD: No issues.

THE NITTY GRITTY: Still fronted by the precious female harmonies of cousins Sherri DuPree-Bemis and Garron DuPree, Eisley continue to churn out shimmering guitarbased pop/rock tunes that glisten on the surface while being driven by airtight steady drums below.

There’s not a lot of forward progression on “Dreaming,” but there doesn’t need to be. The Eisley formula still works, and its overall

And even if this isn’t the group’s best set of songs ever (although it IS strong), one finds many subtle charms tucked away in these tracks. The ascending melodies carrying “My Best Friend,” the gentle strains of “Rabbit Hole,” the infectious sway that pulls us further into “When You Fall” — it’s all good stuff.

For long-time fans or uninitiated newbies, “Dreaming” is just sweet enough to please without tipping over into saccharine territory.

BUY IT?: Surely. ferent genres before. For example, 2006’s “Duper Sessions” flirted with jazz-pop. Now “Pleasure” sees Lerche embracing electronic elements and dance-pop. Opening track “Soft Feelings” comes off like the second coming of Pet Shop Boys.

“I’m Always Watching You” keeps the seamless momentum going full speed ahead.

As the album plays on though, the synthetics bury themselves in the mix while more “traditional” Lerche sounds (i.e. guitars) come back to the forefront. Yet the man has never released a more rhythmically charged record. Still, “Pleasure” remains typical of the man’s work at its core. We get a healthy dose of intelligent satisfying pop without pretension. Except for maybe the endless prog-rock ramblings of “Violent Game.” But remember, no Lerche set is perfect.

BUY IT?: Yep. AIMEE MANN – Mental Illness THE GOOD: Singer/songwriter and ex-‘Til Tuesday frontwoman Aimee Mann gives us an intimate ninth solo effort.

THE BAD: No. THE NITTY GRITTY: Mann never stays in one place too long, having redefined herself countless times since going solo way back in 1990.

“Mental Illness” is the low-key answer to 2012’s more animated indie pop collection “Charmer.” Instead of the full rock band treatment, these fragile songs are given cozy arrangements featuring acoustic guitar, light percussion, bass, piano and the occasional small string section. You won’t find an electric guitar anywhere. Mann harmonizes with her back-up guys, one of whom happens to be past collaborator Ted Leo (of Pharmacists fame).

But while the record has all the makings of a complete downer, “Illness” isn’t a depressing listen. Even though Mann tackles everyday hassles like loneliness, disappointment and depression, the melodies sparkle and a record that should sound icy or detached turns out amazingly warm. So much so that replays are a pleasure as opposed to a dreaded chore.

BUY IT?: Yes.

The last time folk and blues singer Tom Rush visited Wilkes-Barre, snow covered the downtown region.

“What I remember is that it was winter, there had just been a huge snowstorm that hadn’t been cleared yet and there was no parking for miles,” he recalled in a recent interview.

“The show went up quite late, and about half the folks who bought tickets couldn’t get there.

But those that did seemed to have a really good time.”

This time, Rush returns as the headlining musical act for the 62nd annual Fine Arts Fiesta on Saturday, May 20, at 7 p.m. on Public Square in downtown Wilkes-Barre, and there’s no sign of snow stopping fans from enjoying the show.

“I’m very blessed to have been able to make a good living doing something I love to do — and would probably do for free, but don’t let that get around,” Rush joked. “I love performing, I love writing songs and discovering little-known songs that others have written.

I love recording. The hard part, and getting harder, is the travel, but it’s worth it.”

The 76-year-old musician began performing in the early 1960s while studying English literature at Harvard University, and released two albums while a student. After graduating, Rush’s impact on the American folk music revival exploded, melding his knack for finding wonderful songs to perform along with writing his own.

Many of his folk hits have been reworked into country, heavy metal and rap: a testimony to the widespread appeal of his music and its themes.

“You have to be inventive these days to connect with your audience — there is so much noise out there, so many people yam-

mering for your attention that it’s hard to get anyone to focus,” Rush said.

In order to combat the noise, Rush recently recorded a new album in Nashville, which he said is slated to be released by the fall. To subsidize the project, he set up a crowdfunding platform through PledgeMusic, where people may choose from rewards like the album, old and out-of-print recordings, a Naked Lady guitar like the one Rush plays and even a private concert. Fans interested in participating can

Although Rush said he experienced too many memories over the years to pinpoint one as a highlight, he agreed that his performance at the Fine Arts Fiesta would be one for the books.

“I’ll be trying out some new songs and doing some of my old favorites, sprinkled with a liberal helping of stories that are all absolutely true, to one extent or another,” he said.

n Saturday, May 20, RiverFest 2017 celebrates the Lackawanna River and promotes its protection with festivities centered at Sweeney’s Beach Recreation Area, 41 Poplar St., Scranton.

Organized by the Lackawanna River Conservation Association, RiverFest raises funds to support the community-based nonprofit’s mission.

Bernie McGurl, executive director of the LCRA, says the group has spent a number of years fighting on behalf of the river’s well-being.

this year,” McGurl said. “Our mission is to engage the community in activities that are beneficial for the river ... activities that help to conserve the river and watershed resources.”

The LCRA first put on RiverFest in 1988, but it has changed greatly since then.

“During the 1990s, we expanded it to be a whole day of activities,” McGurl said. “Originally, it was just a canoe race in the morning and everybody went home ... it evolved into a whole daylong festival to celebrate the river.”

Many aspects of the festival’s earliest incarnation remain the same. The Lackawanna River Canoe-A-Thon, a 12-mile whitewater canoe and kayak race, still packs the waters.

McGurl said roughly 150 to 200 canoes and kayaks launch from Maslyar Park in Archbald (for advanced paddlers) and Blakely Borough Recreation Park in Peckville.

People often wait along portions of the riverbank to cheer on the paddlers before heading over to the finish line and festival at Sweeney’s Beach.

Later in the day, RiverFest features guided, instructional kayak paddle excursions among other water-based activities.

The free-to-enter Lackawanna River Regatta

offers prizes to winners.

“The Regatta is sort of a fun-filled boat parade. We ask people to decorate themselves and their boats ... we’ve had huge, pink elephants and big, blue sharks,” McGurl said. “You could just get a float together, and we’ll get you launched.”

Another, more comical, contest also offers prizes to those who purchase “duck” tickets.

“At the end of the day, we have our famous Duck-A-Thon, which is a duck race that involves special Lackawanna River racing ducks made in America. The winning prize in the duck race is $500.”

In addition to boating activities, there will be plenty of fun out of the water.

The festival features popular local bands

Lightweight, Jung Bergo Duo and Mountain Sky Orchestra. This year’s emcee, Don Jacobs of “Pennsylvania Outdoors Live,” kicks off the entertainment at 11:30 a.m. Various food and craft vendors also will be on site and festivalgoers can set up a picnic in the park.

McGurl has high hopes that RiverFest 2017 offers education as well as entertainment.

“We want to involve the community with the river so that they understand that it’s our river, and we can enjoy it,” McGurl said. “We need to take care of it. We still have a lot of problems — pollution that affects the water — but those problems are being addressed across the spectrum ... and we need the community to come on board.”

“Overall, we’ve just grown with the ability to bring in some of the larger acts that are in Cabinet’s particular genre. The festival has grown to have a stature that (shows) we’re established,” Orner said. “We have more acts and agents coming to us, so our headliners increase in notoriety and marquee value.”

“KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD” HHH

In its finest moments, “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” is swift and clever and exhilarating.

At its low points, “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” plays like a cheesy B-movie, with ridiculous monsters and unintentionally laughinducing moments.

Add the four-star rating for some scenes to the one-star rating for other scenes, divide by two and presto! Here’s your three-star review.

(And they told me when I entered the movie reviewing game there wouldn’t be any math. Harumph.)

Director Guy Ritchie, he of the signature quick cuts and dazzle-edits and dark humor (“Snatch,” “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” “Sherlock Holmes”) gives a unique spin to the umpteenth telling of the King Arthur legend. This is essentially a superhero origins story, with our man Art (Charlie Hunnam) growing up as a hardscrabble nobody who is tapped for greatness, resists the calling for as long as possible and then finally accepts his destiny.

While caked in mud and blood and sometimes moving in slow motion, natch.

In an extended prologue, the wise and noble and just King Uther (Eric Bana) rules England with a strong but benevolent hand. Uther’s brother Vortigern (Jude Law), consumed with envy and obsessed with power, orchestrates a violent coup, spilling the blood of myriad family members.

Uther’s toddler son Arthur is placed on a boat just in time to escape the wrath of Vortigern. The boat miraculously makes it all the way to the shores of the bustling urban center known as Londinium.

Arthur is rescued by a group of prostitutes who raise him in their brothel.

A couple of decades later, Arthur practically runs the streets of Londinium. He exacts justice on those who deserve it, he builds up considerable coffers, and he’s become such a physical force that even visiting marauding Vikings bend to his will.

Meanwhile, back at the palace, the evil Vortigern grows ever more powerful, thanks in great part to a devil’s bargain he has struck with a very creepy and very slimy sewer-dwelling beast that’s a disturbing combination of octopus and three human-like creatures. (This is one of those B-movie sequences previ-

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” ously referenced.) As Voritgern puts it, he doesn’t care if the people hate him, as long as they fear him as well. He’s stark-raving-mad drunk with power.

It takes a while — in fact, a little too long — for the moment when Arthur puts his hands on the sword in the stone, gives it a mighty yank, and becomes an instant, albeit very reluctant legend, and the last best hope for the people to rise up against the ruthless Vortigern.

Director Ritchie paces much of the second act like a heist movie, with some fantastic, fast-paced montages of Arthur and his team plotting and carrying out uprisings against King Vortigen. (Terrific work by all playing Arthur’s comrades in arms, including Djimon Hounsou as Bedivere; Aidan Gillen as Bill; Kingsley Ben-Adir as Wet Stick; and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as the Mage, a mysterious sorceress with an impressive array of magical powers.)

Jude Law, dressed like Mick Jagger circa 1972, is all sneers and primal howls as Vortigern. It’s an up-and-down performance from a fine actor. For all of Vortigern’s heinous deeds — and they’re about as heinous as heinous can get — he seems

overmatched against Arthur from the get-go.

Charlie Hunnam continues his movie-star ascent with a strong performance as the conflicted Arthur, who will risk all to save his friends and family, but refuses to accept his path as the people’s king until there’s absolutely no way he CAN’T acknowledge his destiny.

Director Ritchie and the set design and CGI teams create some spectacular tableaux, from beautiful countryside long shots to some intricately choreographed battle sequences at the king’s castle and in the labyrinthine streets of Londinium.

In fact, “King Arthur” works best when the focus is on the bonds forged between Arthur and his future knights, the battles between the rebel forces and the obligatory faceless henchmen, and even the slightly sexual tension between Arthur and the rather humorless but enticing Mage. The stuff with the Octo-Person Creature and gigantic reptiles and a CGI swordsman that talks like Darth Vader?

Eh. I’ll take the exploits of the mythical man over the booming magic show every time.

“Gifted” A custody drama featuring Chris Evans as a bachelor assigned to raise his late sister’s math genius daughter (Mckenna Grace).

A nice performance by Evans, who elevates the so-so material. With Octavia Spencer, Jenny Slate.

prEsIDENts aND alcohol The United States has had a complicated relationship with alcohol, and so has its presidents.

The founders enjoyed Madiera, and many made their own beer. Washington opened a commercial distillery, the largest in the new country, after his presidency. In Jefferson’s home, wine was drunk before the meal and beer and cider with the meal.

Presidents snuck drinks during Prohibition, but more recently, several have avoided alcohol.

Bartending students at Luzerne County Community College got a chance to hear about all the presidents’ drinks from Mark Will-Weber, whose comprehensive book “Mint Juleps with Teddy Roosevelt: The Complete History of Presidential Drinking,” looks at the relationship between booze and presidents. Mr. Will-Weber, who lives in the Allentown area, got the idea from a book about presidential golfing that mentioned Warren Harding’s penchant for hiding hooch in his golf bag. He wondered about other presidential drinking habits.

Following are some of his insights.

The general and later first president, Washington, was never known for his personality or companionship. Even his friends didn’t relish time with him. Several observers noted that “alcohol improves him.” If someone wanted to have his ears, they smartly waited until Washington had two or three drinks in him.

Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan avoided alcohol because they had experience with violent alcoholics in their youth. Hillary Clinton, in contrast to her husband and her opponent in the presidential election, drinks widely, Mr. Will-Weber said. (A trait I’d like to trace to her Scranton roots.)

“If the last election were a drinking contest, Hillary Clinton would be our president,” Mr. WillWeber said.

Even though Abe Lincoln worked at a distillery in his youth, he avoided alcohol as an adult, possibly because he knew he was “prone to melancholy,” i.e., depression. He would tease guests at dinner by almost taking a swig of wine.

The name of the book comes from the wild mint that grew around the White House tennis courts during Teddy Roosevelt’s administration.

The president would grab a handful of mint and make courtside juleps with rye whiskey to entice his staff members to continue playing.

Mr. Will-Weber’s book was published before the recent change in administration. President Trump, we know, is a non-drinker, and Mr. Will-Weber is not sure why. But there’s still something to say about him even beyond the short-lived Trump brand vodka. Mr. Trump’s family purchased the Kluge winery in Virginia out of bankruptcy in 2012.

I’ve tried the wine under Kluge and Trump and they are quite good, especially the sparkling wine. The Trumps inherited several vintages that were in tank, barrel or tirage from the Kluge operation.

Jimmy Carter avoided alcohol for religious reasons, although his brother Billy drank enough beer for both of them, even releasing his own brand, Billy Beer. During a toast with Leonid Brezhnev following a treaty, Mr. Carter’s aids substituted the traditional vodka toast with a shot of white wine.

When he found out, Mr. Brezhnev called Mr. Carter the Russian word for wimp.

“You think you know these guys, but then you look at their relationship to alcohol and it is amazing what you find out about them,” Mr. WillWeber said.

To make one of the alluring JFK classic daiquiris, no blender needed. You have to combine 2 ounces of white rum (I like Cruzan as an affordable choice), 1 ounce of fresh lime juice and ½ ounce of simple syrup in a shaker with ice, then shake and strain into a cocktail glass.

Grab a handful of mint from the garden and make your own Teddy Roosevelt Mint Julep.

Muddle the mint with a splash of water and a sugar cube in a sturdy Collins glass or tumbler. Fill with crushed ice and ½ ounce of rye whiskey (big brands Wild Turkey and Jim Beam make nice ryes) plus 2 ounces of brandy (E&J Gallo and Paul Masson are perfect for cocktails). Garnish with mint.

Shawn Caden is a professional musician and currently performs with the bands the Dishonest Fiddlers and Jung Bergo. Caden is a native of Clarks Summit and is a graduate of Abington Heights High School. He also studied audio engineering at Luzerne County Community College. He and his girlfriend, Kate O’Malley, have three children: Phaedra, 5; Aldous, 3; and Ignatia, nine months. They live in Honesdale.

Meet Shawn Caden …

The two bands you’re currently playing with are both doing well. They’ve both recorded original music and each are building a nice following. Can you tell us a little about your work with each project?

With the Dishonest Fiddlers, I just got on board recently (with group founder Dave Brown.) I play mandolin, and I like bluegrass, and Dave writes a lot of original tunes. There’s a couple of festivals coming up that we’re playing, including the Susquehanna Breakdown. Jung Bergo has two CDs, and we’re working on the third. I have a home studio, and we’re doing some stuff there. The first CD was recorded with Bret Alexander at Saturation Acres, and the second CD was mostly recorded at my house. We’ll also be playing some festivals on the summer circuit.

Who were some of your biggest musical influences?

When I first started playing guitar, Pink Floyd was it. First was the grunge area — Nirvana and 311 — but once I started to really want to play guitar, it was David Gilmour. Then, I got into the jam scene, with Phish and the Grateful Dead, and that kind of snowballed on top of all that stuff.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Family stuff. I try to get them to play. I would

You play guitar, mandolin, saxophone and keyboards. When did you first realize you wanted to become a musician?

When I was in grade school, in fifth grade, I started playing drums in the concert band. I have an older brother who was already into drumming, so I kind of fell into that. When I got to high school, in ninth grade, I picked up the guitar and got into the melodic end of things. And never looked back.

Is there anything about you that might surprise even your friends?

I like a lot of Indian classical music. I’ve been playing sitar at my house. That’s an angle that not everybody knows. Other than that, not really. I’m a pretty honest person, to a fault. (Laughs.) Sometimes it gets me in trouble.

Have you had a defining personal moment?

Becoming a father. That’s a big one. I don’t feel the same as I ever had. An emotional rollercoaster.

When my daughter was born, I couldn’t see through the tears. It was a life-changing event.

Everything I say seems to be wrong, and she gets angry.

She’s crying and isolating a lot, and I want to help, but I don’t know how.

Consider that we don’t say to people who are grieving over someone who’s died, “C’mon, think positive! One less person you have to call! And didn’t he live kinda far out of town? However, Nesse suggests that one of the possible evolutionary reasons for the very visible signs of sadness may be to signal to others that we need care — a message that gets sent loud and clear when one is sobbing into the shoulder of the bewildered Office Depot delivery guy.

Being mindful that sadness has a job to do should help you stop pressing your friend to see the “good” in “goodbye.” Probably, the kindest thing you can do is to try to be comfortable with her discomfort and just be there for her. Hand her a Kleenex and listen instead of attempting to drag her kicking and screaming to closure: “It’s 10 a.m.

spected, used. Wanting to feel better is what motivates you to take corrective action. As anthropologist John Marshall Townsend observed about female subjects from his research: “Even when women voluntarily engaged in casual sex and expressed extremely permissive attitudes, their emotions urged them to test and evaluate investment, detect shirking and false advertising, and remedy deficiencies in investment.”

And no, you can’t just plead your case to your emotions with “But I’m using birth control!” Your emotions are running on very old software (predating even those early ‘90s AOL floppies), so as far as they’re concerned, there’s no such thing as sex without possible mommyhood. In other words, if you’re going to make casual sex work for you, you need to see that it works for your emotions.

Basically, your body is your temple, and prospective worshippers need to sacrifice a goat to the goddess — or, at the very least, buy the lady a hamburger.
