‘White Matter SurpluS’

Community Play Factory’s presents “White Matter Surplus” Friday, June 16, through Sunday, June 18, at the Olde Brick Theatre, 126 W. Market St., Tickets are $12, and the show starts at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. It is recommended for mature audiences.

Set in a “fictional but familiar” Scranton circa 2010, “White Matter Surplus” is about a restless young woman and her meddling aunt struggling to repair their relationship as a couple of con artists come to town and change the course of their destiny.

The production premiered with two shows in the Koppleman Auditorium at the Jewish Community Center of Scranton in March.

On Sunday, June 18, the 23rd annual Father’s Day Car Show takes place at Nay Aug Park, 500 Arthur Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission for show cars is $10 in advance or $15 day of show. The event is free for spectators.

The event features food, awards and trophies for winning show cars and giveaways. All kinds of cars, trucks, motorcycles and specialty vehicles are welcome.

A block party on Saturday, June 17, takes over Alder Street at Cedar Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hosted by the Elm Street Project, the event features food vendors, like Manning’s Mobile Ice Cream Shop and Mexican restaurant Tortilleria El Buen Amigo. Also, kids’ activities, games, face painting and more will be offered. The South Side Farmers Market will be open, live Music will be provided by Jim Cullen and Jack Bordo.

MAXIMO PARK – Risk to Exist THE GOOD: British indie rockers Maximo Park are back with their sixth.

THE BAD: Over the last couple of records, the band has softened some of their rough edges; the music becoming slightly less aggressive or jagged. Unfortunately, they’ve shed some of their uniqueness along the way, too.

Take 3 promises a full sound in a small package Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring musicians?

A: Enjoy every moment that you can and keep playing as long as you have fun doing it.

Scranton musical trio Take 3 brings rock and roll to events all around Northeast Pennsylvania, from weddings to backyard summer parties.

Specializing in hits from the ’70s to the ’90s, the group dubs itself the “biggest little band in NEPA,” and promises big music in a small package.

Tony Bouselli, the group’s drummer and vocalist, went On The Record this week to discuss the history, style and success of Take 3.

Q: How did Take 3 meet?

A: Mike and I were members of Take 5, a Scranton party band that played the area for over 30 years. One night in September 2009, our keyboard player at the time, Frank Gruden, and Mike decided to form a duo to play some smaller venues.

They were going to call themselves ”Take 2.” At the last minute, they asked me to join them on drums and Take 3 was born.

Q: How many years have you been performing together?

A: We have gone through numerous bass players, but Mike and I have been together over 15 years between Take 5 and Take 3. Dave Arnell has been our bass player for over 2 years.

Q: Do you remember your first performance with Take 3?

A: Our first gig was at Merts (now Harry’s) in Scranton. We did it mostly for

Q: Why is Take 3 dubbed the “biggest little band in NEPA?” A: We say we’re the biggest little band because although we are only a threepiece band, we have a full sound. It’s all live music; nothing is taped. Bass, drums and guitar — rock ‘n’ roll. fun never thinking it would last this long.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories with the group?

A: Too many memories to single out, but we enjoy when former band members and other local musicians stop by and sit in with us. We also are the “official rock band” of the Steamtown Marathon and have played the after-race party since its inception, starting as Take 5 and currently as Take 3. This is special to us because the Marathon benefits St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton.

Q: Your website describes Take 3 as a group that can adapt to many different types of events. Do you believe this has helped your success?

A: Absolutely. We all have been playing

music for so long and have a wide variety of songs in our library so we can adapt to almost any event. We play weddings, picnics, car shows, clubs, etc., each one requiring a different mix. We can play a polka at a wedding that we wouldn’t play at a club (unless requested).

Q: Who are some of the band’s musical influences?

A: My musical influences would be John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Elvis and The Eagles. Dave and Mike like a little different rock, such as Journey, The Outfield, Radiohead and stuff like that.

Q: Does the group have a target audience?

A: We don’t have a target audience, because you never know who is going to show up at a club. We play a little something for everybody.

Q: Do you have any plans for the future?

A: I always say that as long as there is work and people still enjoy us, we will keep playing. All three of us have day jobs, so sometimes playing can be a lot.

But once we set up and start playing, we leave the work week behind. We’re three friends who have a ball making music together and having a good time.

he can play a genuine good guy, as a dog handler who has been through several tours of duty and is something of a legend in the Corps.

Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite (making her feature film debut on the heels of the great documentary “Blackfish”) does a fine job with the combat sequences. We hold our breath as Megan and Rex search apartment complexes and roam the harsh desert in search of IEDs. We’re almost certain a bomb is going to go off at one point, but when it does, it’s still a stunning and potentially heartbreaking moment.

“Megan Leavey” is even more effective in the final act, as Megan struggles with PTSD and falls back into a pattern of self-pity and distancing herself from human contact. She becomes consumed, to the point of obsession, with reconnecting with Rex and adopting him, even though Gunny tells her it’s not a good idea because Rex is a soldier, not a pet, and there’s a strong chance he’ll have a very hard time assimilating to civilian life. (Which, of course, is exactly what is happening with Megan.)

Kate Mara delivers one of the best performances of her career in the title role. Megan can be a self-centered brat, and it’s not always easy to like her, but thanks to Rex, she does learn what it means to love something as much as or more than one loves oneself. Corny and cliched, to be sure, but I dare you to resist Megan and Rex, especially in the last five minutes (and the closing credits) of this movie.

“Snatched” When Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer are playing verbal tennis as mother and daughter, trading passive-aggressive criticism along with genuinely affectionate observations, it’s an absolute delight to witness. When they’re slogging through the jungle later, we find ourselves wishing they had a stronger script. Rated R for crude sexual content, brief nudity and language throughout. 91 minutes. SMALL SCREENS kill 90 minutes in light-chuckle fashion on a flight.

Rating: HH 1/2 “The Lego Batman Movie” (Animated actionadventure, PG, 104 m., 2017). I’d rank Will Arnett’s raspy, alternately heroic and ridiculous version of the Dark Knight as one of the top three Batman performances of all time. The superhero/supervillain dynamic is explored in a clever, funny and sweet manner, through a constant explosion of candy-colored visual treats. Rating: HHH 1/2

“John Wick: Chapter 2” “Table 19” (Comedy, PG-13, 87 m., 2017). In a sometimes clunky, utterly harmless modern-day takeoff on “The Breakfast Club,” Anna Kendrick plays a maid of honor who falls out of favor and is exiled to a remote table of outcasts at the wedding reception. It’s the kind of movie that will help you

“John Wick: Chapter 2” (Crime thriller, R, 122 m., 2017). With the stylish pulp thriller “John Wick” in 2014 and this equally entertaining and even more action-jammed thriller, Keanu Reeves’ stoic, black-clad, one-man killing machine has become THE go-to bad guy/action hero of the 2010s.

Who would have guessed? Rating: HHH 1/2 “Beauty and the Beast” (Fantasy musical, PG13, 126 m., 2017). The live-action remake of Disney’s 1991 animated classic is almost overwhelm-

ingly lavish, beautifully staged and performed with exquisite timing and grace by the outstanding cast headed by Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. Rating: HHH 1/2 “Fist Fight” (Comedy, R, 91 m., 2017). A violent teacher (Ice Cube) challenges a sniveling colleague (Charlie Day) to a fight after school in a comedy that’s ugly, mean-spirited and bereft of laughs. The 91 minutes of cinematic detention feel twice as long. Rating: Zero stars.

“The Great Wall” (Action fantasy, PG-13, 104 m., 2017). Cast as the Great White Hope alongside several popular Chinese actors, Matt Damon plays a mercenary enlisted to help fight an invasion of paranormal monsters. A fantasy with some pretty cool visual effects but scads of unintentionally hilarious dialogue, “The Great Wall” is so wonderfully bad, I could see some coming for the action and staying for the camp laughs. It’s a beautiful bomb.

Rating: H 1/2 “Logan” (Superhero action, R, 141 m., 2017).

As much a Western as it is a sci-fi thriller, James Mangold’s darkly entertaining “Logan” affords Hugh Jackman the opportunity to reinvent his portrayal of his X-Men character. The result is one of the best performances of Jackman’s career -and one of the most impressive superhero movies of this decade. Rating: HHH 1/2

“Get Out” (Comedy horror, R, 105 m., 2017).

When a young black man (Daniel Kaluuya) meets the parents of his white girlfriend (Allison Williams), it’s the start of a cutting-edge, fresh and sometimes bat-bleep-crazy mash-up of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Stepford Wives.” Writer-director Jordan Peele pays homage to some great horror films while carving out his own fantastically creative path. Rating: HHH 1/2 GRADE: HHHH Excellent, HHH Good, HH Fair, H Poor.

Best-selling rock group toto brings 40 years of hits to Kirby Center

When he looks back on the 40 years together as a band, Toto founding member David Paich said he still cannot believe the group’s success.

“It’s gone by so quickly,” Paich said in a recent phone interview. “We only thought we’d do it maybe 10 years if we were lucky, but because of the loyalty and our good fortune ... We’ve had great fans that keep asking us to play globally and around the world. It’s gone by in the flash of a pan.”

The multi-Grammy Award-winning rock band visits F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, June 18, at 7:30 p.m. for “An Evening with Toto.”

Toto’s two-hour performance will feature repertoire from their latest studio album, “Toto XIV,” as well as classic hits and both band and fan favorites from their vast catalog, including singles like “Africa,” “Rosanna” and “Hold the Line.”

“We know we have to play some of our hits, but we’ll also reach back and do some of our deeper cuts,” Paich said. “For those who have been fans for the 40 years, we want something that someone hasn’t heard in a while. It won’t be the same show that we did last year. We do something different when

“I’ve got a band full of guys that are eager to get out there,” Paich said. “I can sit by the ocean and look for shells, myself ... I will always love making music and playing for people, but the music business wears on you after a while.

“They’re both shaping up to be very multi-layered productions with a lot of comedic and serious moments,” Flynn said.

The festival also brings back its Youth Theatre Lab production, a performance created and written entirely by students with help from company professionals. The performance takes place on Saturday, June 17, at 6 p.m.at Scranton Prep.

The festival’s “second stage series,” as Flynn calls it, of one-act plays “Skin of the Teeth” and “Cheeks,” will be staged at Olde Brick Theatre on Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24, at 8 p.m.

The one-person plays garnered international recognition with “Cheeks” heading to one of the world’s largest fringe festivals, Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this year, and “Skin of the Teeth” performed in Edinburgh last year.

With such diverse and acclaimed performances featured this season, Tamara Sevunts, director of public relations for the festival, hopes Scranton continues to land on the map of theatergoers.

“The larger vision for the festival is to become an event that draws enough tourism and activity to Scranton to help give the city’s economy a boost to its heyday glory,” Sevunts said. “Anyone who comes out to the shows is able to get something great for free, and it encourages local business.”

And to those who may be hesitant to attend a festival with the Bard’s moniker, Flynn believes the

theater company’s lineup can appeal to anyone.

“We want to offer as much of a plethora of options for theatergoers as we can, and we’re always trying to push the line of our programming,” Flynn explained. “We believe theater should be a place for everybody, and we want to program things for people who may not like Shakespeare or musicals.”

That gives us some time to stock up on wine to cool down with. Terms such as “poolside” or “porch” wine usually suggest off-dry, quaffable wine. I don’t think that’s entirely fair.

There’s a summertime wine style for every taste.

Dry wine drinkers can reach for sauvignon blanc, Chablis or dry riesling by itself.

I tried some wines that offer some internal air conditioning for very hot days.

Given how quickly a glass of wine could warm up in 90-degree weather, stowing a bottle in the freezer to get a super-chill is not a bad idea. If you set bottles out, keep them on ice or in a bottle cozy.

Trivento White Orchid Torrontes, a juicy wine with hints of tangerine, boasts an off-dry finish that complements a tart and crisp ending to this low-alcohol quencher. This version is not widely available in Pennsylvania, but Trivento’s other pleasant torrontes are. $12. HHH1/2.

With citrus character and zingy acidity, sauvignon blanc of all kinds are tailor-made for warm days. For dry wine lovers, it’s a great poolside wine as it is a food wine. Robert Mondavi was a pioneer in extending sauvignon blanc with a new style in

the 1970s, dubbing the category fumé blanc. Robert Mondavi 2015 Napa Valley Fumé Blanc smells of white grapefruit and acacia flower. Mid-weight in the palate, the wine is smoother with more moderate acidity than conventional sauvignon blanc. $16. HHHH1/2.

Kung Fu Girl 2015 Washington State Riesling is just peachy, loaded with white peach, apricot and lime character. The wine has a tight close for an off-dry wine with a mineral finish that makes it great for sipping and Asian food. $14. HHHH. Mionetto il Spriz, a fun brand extension from the famous Prosecco producer, is marketed as a beforedinner drink. Sold in a bowling pin-like bottle and topped with a crown cap, the bubbly wine shows character of orange zest with citrus sweetness. $9. HHH1/2.

Those who want to keep things cool and dry may want to check out white Bordeaux. Those who want to be on the sweet side can reach for a moscato.

Loreen Bohannon is a professional sound engineer, specializing in front of house sound. She has worked with artists such as Cabinet, Rusted Root, Hailey Knox, Postmodern Jukebox and also has been on the road with Vans Warped Tour. In the past, she ran sound for Rock Street Music worked and as a radio DJ on 105 The River. She also served as the host of Party on The Patio at Mohegan Sun Pocono. Bohannon is a native of Sterling and is a graduate of Western Wayne High School. She studied technical theater, electrical engineering and English at Wilkes University.

She lives at Lake Wallenpaupack.

Meet Loreen Bohannon …

When did you first realize that you wanted to work with live sound?

When I was about 16. I’ve been doing this since high school. I kind of started with Rock Street. They came into my school when Nancy Evans, who is now my adopted mom, was hired as the high school theater director. She came in and really changed around the whole program, and she brought in Rock Street to start doing our musicals. I was introduced to some of their guys — who are now good friends — and they said, “You can touch our stuff, but not until you know how to wrap a cable. And we’re not going to show you how to do it.” So I obsessed over learning how to wrap a cable, and the next time they came through I started helping them and I was the head of the stage crew. Until the last few years, it was just a job, but I’ve now realized, “This is my career. This is it. This is really what I want to do.”

There’s nothing else I’ve gravitated towards.

Guilty pleasure?

It’s really bad, and its contributed to a lot of debilitating problems with my confidence and my self-esteem in my life. And I’ve only recently, in my life, been able to sort that out. People see how confident I am, but until recently it’s pretty much all been an act. Behind what people see of me is a very shy and unsure girl who had a lot of bad stuff happen to her.
