Freedom will be ringing from every mountainside that surrounds the Abingtons this Friday, July 3, thanks to the Rotary Club of the Abingtons’ annual fireworks display, which will be held on the grounds of Abington Heights Middle School, 1555 Newton-Ransom Boulevard, with activities beginning at 5 p.m. and the actual display beginning at dusk. According to event chair John Hambrose, this year’s event is bigger and better than ever. “The Abingtons and northeast Pennsylvania are great places to live and not being able to enjoy a community fireworks show for Independence Day would be like not being able to enjoy baseball, hot dogs and apple pie,” he said. “The Rotary Club of the Abingtons cannot imagine the Fourth of July in our community without fireworks. What’s new is our club’s work to turn the show into a fun, family-friendly evening for the entire community. Each year we’re trying to make it more of a ‘come early, stay the evening-type’ of event with a wide variety of food and amusements for children, live entertainment and to cap it all off, a great fireworks show.” This year’s live entertainment is supported by the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board (AAJRB) and the Overlook Foundation, featuring headlining act The Quiet-
men, as well as the Phyllis Hopkins Electric Trio and Nothing Yet. The live entertainment is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. “We hope the live entertainment turns out to be our show’s midway, where we hope our guests will gather to enjoy the music and patronize the food trucks that will come to the show,” Hambrose said, adding that the current lineup of food vendors includes Manning’s Mobile, the Abington Lions Club, Mike Yogi’s Ethnic Foods, Pizza by Fire, Tony Thomas Catering, Webby’s Concessions and, of course, the Rotary Club of the Abingtons. “The Rotary Club of the Abingtons has been presenting this program for the community for more than 25 years and a strong team of our club members donate their time to make the show happen,” Hambrose said. “The cost of presenting the show is approaching $20,000 and we rely heavily on Friends of the Rotary sponsorships and proceeds from parking. A lot of that revenue will be determined by the weather and turnout. We’re hoping that the bands and food trucks attract their regular fans and customers and that our show and the great community element of the event draw larger crowds each year.” Parking for the event is $5 per car. Contributions to support the show can mailed to P.O. Box 392, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
