PennDOT makes progress on Abington area roads by Stephanie Longo
SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
Anyone passing through the Abingtons on U.S. Rtes. 6 and 11 en route to Tunkhannock, has seen the increasing number of orange cones dotting the roadway. That’s because PennDOT has been continuing its progress on a $42.15 million project set to revamp the road that is slated for completion in November 2017. “It is the largest project in the area,” said Mike Taluto, safety press officer for PennDOT District 4-0. “We’re looking at construction of a pavement alternate that will include the rubberizing of the existing concrete, as well as the replacement of two bridges and a retaining wall, the replacement of the superstructure of two bridges, the redecking of a bridge and the latex overlay of a bridge deck. Shoulders will also be reconstructed and we will make improvements to intersections, including two new signals and the replacement of two existing signals. Drainage facilities, guiderails, signage and pavement markings will be replaced as well.” Part of the Abington-area U.S. Rtes. 6 and 11 facelift includes the resurfacing work PennDOT is beginning this week which, Taluto says, should be completed by the middle of August. The $5.8 million project will run from the Glenburn area straight through to the Interstate 81 and 476 interchange in South Abington Township. One project that has been irking area residents for some time is the construction on Edella Road in South Abington Township. “There has been some negative feedback on the Edella Road bridge over Interstate 81 because it has been an inconvenience for residents of that area,” Taluto said. “They had to use a detour while the work was being done, but the bridge will be open temporarily by the end of July.” “This part of the repair work will be completed by the beginning of August and the road will open,” Taluto said. “The bridge will be replaced beginning in April of 2016 and that work should be completed by fall of that year.”

Taluto also said that PennDOT is planning several other projects for the Abington area; including a resurfacing project in Dalton beginning in 2018, bridge replacement on Pennsylvania Rte. 524 over Kennedy Creek in the fall
of 2016 and a bridge replacement over Summit Lake Creek slated to begin in September. For more information or to check on the progress of any PennDOT project, visit neparoads.com.
