PennDOT makes progress on Triboro-area roads by Stephanie Longo
SPECIAL TO THE TRIBORO BANNER
Moosic’s main streets are under construction, according to PennDOT officials. Main Street, Spring Street and Birney Avenue are seeing their share of construction equipment this summer as the roadways are about to receive necessary upgrades. “We are currently working on the replacement of the Main Street Bridge over Spring Brook Creek,” said Mike Taluto, PennDOT safety press officer. “The new structure is anticipated to be a single-span steel girder on the same alignment with framing and it will also include a raised sidewalk. It should be completed this fall.” The Main Street Bridge replacement project costs a total of $1.42 million and detours will be used to maintain the flow of traffic during construction. “There have been issues over the past several years with each project in the area,” Taluto said. “The Main Street Bridge detour has been in place for more than three years and the detours have been issues for the residents and business in the area.” Along with the Main Street Bridge project, PennDOT is also working on a $2.98 million bridge replacement on Spring Street in Moosic that crosses over the Lackawanna River. This project is scheduled for completion in November and will also include new pavement, new guiderails, sidewalks, pavement markings and other enhancements. There are detours in place. Besides the two bridge replacements, PennDOT is also working on improving a stretch of Birney Avenue between Hollenback and Corey streets in the vicinity of Birney Plaza, costing $2.46 million. “For the Birney Avenue project, we’re looking at installing a traffic signal, a retaining wall, and full-depth bituminous pavement, as well as pavement widening, excavation, landscaping, pavement markings, upgrades to drainage, concrete curbing and sidewalks with

handicapped-accessible ramps and other upgrades, “Taluto said. “This project should be completed by Oct. 31.” While the Moosic projects are proving difficult for area residents needing to seek detours or whose commutes have been delayed by the roadwork, Taluto said that PennDOT’s largest undertaking in the Triboro area is actually in Taylor. PennDOT is working on a stretch of Keyser Avenue between Keyser Creek and Lucky Run Creek that has been combined with work
being performed on the roadway beginning near Ferdinand Avenue in Scranton. The $15.5 million project will be completed before the end of July and the remaining paving work is currently underway. Taluto said that the project entails working on a retaining wall, four traffic signals, paving, demolition of two structures, drainage, sidewalks and curbing.
