BANNER Mia Scotti ready for NAM

By Katelyn English

SPECIAL TO THE TRIBORO BANNER

On Aug. 14, 9-year-old Mia Scotti is set to compete at state-level in the National American Miss (NAM) pageant located at the Hilton Hotel in Harrisburg. The Taylor native and fourth grader at Riverside West Elementary certainly keeps active, being involved in cheerleading, dance, basketball, twirling, Girl Scouts and volunteer work at Griffin Pond and for Children’s Advocacy Walk/Run. In large part, she credits both her passion for helping others and the experiences she has had with Girl Scouts for her entering the NAM pageant. Yet, perseverance has also played a role in Scotti’s ability to appear in NAM. Over the years, she has sent in photo after photo, annually, in hopes of receiving a letter for admission. Her dream finally came true. “I got a letter in the mail saying that I could do it,” Scotti said. “I sent in the applications and everything, and that’s how I am getting to do it.” Scotti was contacted, and informed that her natural look, non-professionally done photo and hobbies correlated to what NAM was looking for. She will now compete, taking part in the all-day competition, which entails three rounds of events, including the formal gown judging, an interview and a segment that deals with community involvement. Judges score on a 10-point scale for each event, leaving the contestant a total of 30 points to obtain. An optional talent event may be added as a bonus event. Contestants are expected to arrive for breakfast at 6 a.m. prior to some practice time, but then the pageant gets

underway with minimum practice time allotted between events. Regarding the pageant, Scotti explained her plans. “I’m going to dress up like a character from “Grease,” and dance to a song from the movie as my talent,” Scotti said. “But I’m looking forward to the part where you get to make your own design on your dress, and show the judges that.”

She has already compiled “a dress, the poodle skirt, shoes and a neck scarf.” When asked if she would be donning the classic “Grease” Pink Lady color, she answered, laughing, “The poodle will be pink on the black skirt I will be wearing.” “It wasn’t something that Mia required much preparation for,” said her mom, Tina Scotti. With dancing, twirling and everything Scotti does, she was already prepared. Judges informed her that she didn’t need help with answering the interview questions, sitting properly or even walking the runway. However, her abilities are not all that speak volumes about her character. Scotti has many sponsors backing her, including Frank & D’s, Gino Scotti’s “Home Improvement,” Elizabeth’s Boutique and Dancing Dreams Studio School of Dance. And she participates in some form or another with every sponsor she has. Glancing at her future, Scotti hopes to move forward in the pageant to reach the next level, taking place in DisneyLand in California. Winning the competition in its entirety would, above all, include a great learning experience and a scholarship, which she says she would use for veterinary school. She loves animals, recounting her volunteer work making dog biscuits. Scotti enjoys being out in the public. Being in this pageant, for her, is also a step towards a possible future career surrounded by people. She mentioned that modeling and acting are also of great interest to her. “If I enjoy this pageant, I would like to do another one,” Scotti explained. Showing her enthusiasm for acting, Scotti said, “I even asked a teacher of mine once if our school had a drama club.”
