Plenty of volunteers at the Our Lady of the Snows bazaar by Christopher Cornell
ABINGTON SUBURBAN EDITOR
Choir members of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Clarks Summit dedicate their time and talent in sharing their voices to enhance many church services throughout the year. During the summer, the group shares their love of the written word as they take on organizing the book booth during the church’s annual summer bazaar. This year finds many choir members assisting chairman Liana Smith as they ready the book booth in its new location for the 2015 bazaar, Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 6-8, on the grounds of the Church of St. Benedict on Newton-Ransom Boulevard. The book booth has been moved to the same barn that holds the bargain booth. “The move has been a great help to our volunteers who, in the past, had to handle all the books many times as they were received at the church, sorted and then moved to the booth and handled again to shelve them all before the bazaar,” explains Smith. “We now have added additional shelving and have already begun to organize and display the many books that have already been received.” Many of the titles offered at the book booth mirror the current best seller lists. “We receive a great variety of titles from the popular writers that often top the best seller lists,” she added. “We also receive titles from less-well-known writers that many book booth shoppers seek out. There are many categories of books besides fiction and nonfiction in the book barn, including cooking, decorating, gardening, history, travel and children’s books. Set up in a way similar to a book store, visitors are encouraged to spend time browsing. The booth also offers donated CDs, DVDs, puzzles and games. “It really is a great investment to spend a little time and look for the titles that appeal to you,” added the chairman. “We have come across older volumes that we feel might be more valuable and we turn those over to the volunteers at the antique booth for their

input.” Among the volunteers at the book booth are Annette Kalwaytis, Nora Stracham, Anne Sucheski, Lorraine Jenkins, Tami Fitz-Arly, Maurya Dillon, Sharon Maybock, Dot Graf, Shirley Lowrie, John Stracham and Gene Maybock. There are also people who help with the behind-the-scenes set-up including Liana’s husband Pete, who built many of the book shelves. Another highlight of the three-day church bazaar is the nightly entertainment with Battle of the Bands on Thursday, The Mace in Dickson Band on Friday and the Quietmen on Saturday. The wide variety of additional booths includes theme baskets, bargain barn,
plants, bingo, antiques, baked goods, ice cream, children’s and adult’s games, hay rides and a coffee house, along with American and ethnic foods. The bazaar is open Thursday and Friday from 6–11 p.m. and Saturday 5–10:30 p.m. A shuttle service, provided by Buranich Transportation, will run between the bazaar and the field behind. This year’s event is co-chaired by Dorothy Lynott and Steve Gember. The pastoral staff includes Monsignor James J. McGarry, Parochial Vicar Rev. Richard Cirba, Administrator Rev. John Lapara and In-Residence Monsignor David Tressler. Special thanks to Nancy Parlo for all her assistance with this article.
