Jam band Rusted Root takes its folk-rock sound to Sherman Theater, 524 Main St., Stroudsburg, on Friday at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Formed in 1992, the Pittsburgh band became known for its roots and rock sound thanks to its 1994 platinum album “When I Woke” and the hit songs it spawned, “Ecstasy,” “Martyr” and “Send Me on My Way.” The group released six more albums since then and sold more than 3 million records in addition to performing with such groups as the Allman Brothers Band, Dave Matthews Band, the Grateful Dead and Santana.

As 2017 inches ever so closer, it’s time to look back and count down the 20 albums that mattered most over the past 12 months.

20. THE LONDON SUEDE — “Night Thoughts” (January) The Britpop legends continued the comeback that started with 2013’s “Bloodsports” by releasing a record that was even more intriguing and ambitious. “Night Thoughts” ended up being one of the finest albums of a career we thought was over a decade ago.

19. PETER BJORN AND JOHN — “Breaking Point” (June) The Swedish indie pop band recovered with an album that was its most accomplished since what many consider the group’s career peak, 2006’s “Writer’s Block.” “Breaking Point” found the boys

NOrth East skatE CrEW marks 20 years with film

W

hen T.C. Harding, Brent Postupak and Jason Pearce created North East Skate Crew in 1996, Postupak chose purple as its color.

In celebration of the group’s 20th anniversary, Harding went back to its roots to co-produce the skate crew’s latest film, “Purple.”

“It has multiple meanings,” he said. “We’re honoring where it started, honoring Brent (who died in 2010). Hopefully we’ll be around for another 20 years.”

The full-length skateboard video screens at a premiere party at Downtown Arts, Wilkes-Barre, on Thursday, Dec. 29, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the film airing at 8:30. Tickets are $5, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“Purple” is the 12th skate video produced by North East Skate Crew, or NESC, with Harding and co-producer Jonathan Borthwick at the helm.

It is a compilation video of nearly 25 skaters, with footage from Boston to Florida, California and Colorado that also pays homage to the prior films and the group’s lasting success.

About 50 people helped create the film, including skaters, videographers, photographers, editors, volunteers and those organizing the premiere. “(The film) is a celebration of skateboarding,” NESC member James Gidosh said.

For its first film, NESC hosted the premiere in a private home. When 150 people showed up, the members realized that was the last time they could host an event on their own.

From then on, they held many premieres at the now-shuttered Cafe Metropolis, and even over-sold the largest theater at R/C Wilkes-Barre Movies 14 with 580 guests.

“We know how to throw an event,” Harding said with a smile. “People do show up, for whatever reason. It’s not just about skateboarding, but also about the creative landscape of NEPA.” Local bands Sucker and Royal Hell will perform during the pre-party, and photography and other art by NESC members will be displayed.

A bake sale and raffle basket drawing also will take place to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“We’ve had some people from the crew succumb to the disease, so it really hit home for some of us,” Harding said of their beneficiary. “It’s also a big issue in the area for kids in general. With the power of the internet, people can be bullied 24/7.

And it’s something people don’t want to talk about.”

NESC also will collect coats to donate to the Clem-Mar House, which helps people suffering from addiction.

Although the public’s love for skateboard culture hasn’t improved much in 20 years, the NESC founders found it important to create their own organization for an activity they held so close to their hearts.

“There was so much politics with parents and coaches in (organized) sports, but with skateboarding you and your friends dictated everything,” Harding said. “We were taking a stance against people telling us skateboarding was bad, because we all had a passion and love for it. And the proof is in the pudding; here we are 20 years later and still going.”

For many, NESC is a close-knit brotherhood.

The 30-somethings of NESC, like Harding and

Gidosh, paved the way for the younger generation by supplying a support group of like-minded people. Gidosh said he never envisioned the positive influence they would have on some of the younger members, but he is happy for it.

And the all-ages aspect of the sport is apparent during “Purple,” with featured skaters ranging in age from 17 to 40.

The Other Side in downtown Wilkes-Barre will host the film’s after party, with local DJ sets from Conscious Pilot, Poison Thorn and Fantasy Camp plus a surprise guest DJ. Tickets for the 21-andolder event are $5 or $2 with the ticket from the video premiere.

“Skateboarding has always been there for me in the toughest of times and in the best times. It’s always helped me,” Harding said. “There were definitely points when I thought I was too old to be skateboarding, but when skateboarding isn’t in my life, it seems I’m at my worst, and when it is in my life, I’m at my best.”

“PASSENGERS” H1/2

One night in the near future, you’ll be on the sofa, surfing at-home movie viewing options, and you’ll come across “Passengers.”

Hey, you’ll say to yourself or to the person occupying the seat next to you. What about this “Passengers,” with J. Law and Chris Pratt? She’s got the Oscar and everything, and he was good pretending he was in a pit with real velociraptors in “Jurassic World.” Plus it’s a space movie!

So you might give it a click. If you do, be prepared to hit “Pause” or perhaps the “Mute” button on numerous occasions, as you will most likely find yourself saying: Wait a minute, what now? Are they SERIOUS? Unfortunately, they are serious. “Passengers” is supposed to be some sort of combo platter of “2001: A Space Odyssey” meets “Titanic,” but it is difficult not to chuckle as a massive space station soars through space while the story careens all over the place, as if the screenplay had been struck by structure meteors creating some deadly plot holes.

This is a well-designed, initially intriguing, visually interesting sci-fi romance torpedoed by a premise — and a payoff — so creepy and misogynistic, it’s amazing nobody who read the script or green-lit the film (or chose to star in it) raised concerns about how it would play with an audience of, you know, people with working minds.

The entire movie takes place aboard the Avalon, an enormous, twirling, basically awesome-looking spaceship carrying some 5,000 passengers and 238 crew members on a 120-year excursion to Homestead II, an idyllic, unblemished colony planet. (Apparently, things aren’t going so well back on Earth.)

Given the length of the journey, all onboard are encased in individual hibernation pods. They will “sleep” until the ship is just four months away from Homestead II, at which point they’ll be resuscitated and they’ll have some time to study up on colony living and enjoy the amenities on the Avalon, which basically mirror the entertainment options aboard a high-end cruise ship: a sprawling breakfast cafeteria; gourmet restaurants; basketball court; dance floor; an upscale bar, etc.

Chris Pratt plays Jim, a nice-guy engineer hoping to find love in the new world. Jennifer Lawrence is Aurora, a writer who was never happy in New

“Passengers” York and is hoping to live the adventure of a lifetime and chronicle it for posterity.

A mere 30 or so years into the 120-year journey, Aurora and Jim find themselves awake — and royally screwed, seeing as how this means they will live out their full natural lives and die well before the ship reaches Homestead II. I’m not going to delve into the circumstances of their respective awakenings, other than to say they sour just about everything that happens after that.

Wait. Not “just about everything.” EVERYTHING. While everyone else on the ship remains in blissful hibernation, Jim and Aurora must figure out a way to go back to sleep. In the meantime, well, if the “Titanic” parallel isn’t obvious enough, Aurora says at one point, “We’re on a sinking ship and we can’t get off!”

Michael Sheen plays a droid bartender that stands by at the ready, polishing a glass and offering up drinks and platitudes while haunting music plays in the background. Because why not have a reference to “The Shining,” even though it makes absolutely no sense for this bartender droid to be up and running even BEFORE Jim and Aurora are awakened.

For that matter, why does an unseen automated voice advise passengers to run to a lookout deck when the Avalon is going to slingshot around a star? Is the ship somehow aware two of the passengers are awake? If so, why is there absolutely no plan in place for the unlikely but conceivable occurrence of PEOPLE WAKING UP WAY TOO EARLY???

There’s no shortage of arresting visual effects in “Passengers,” e.g., a sequence when Aurora is swimming in the coolest lap pool ever as there’s a sudden loss of gravity and she finds herself trapped in a floating bubble of water. But it’s just diverting eye candy, momentarily distracting us from the realities of the off-putting, ridiculous storyline.

Pratt and Lawrence are OK together. As much as I like Pratt’s easygoing onscreen presence in big-budget flicks where he spends a lot of time interacting with CGI creations, for me the jury is still out on whether he can handle deeper material.

As for Lawrence, she’s fine in the early, romantic scenes, but the yelling and the careening about and the yelling and the grunting and the yelling when all hell is breaking loose on the ship? Meh. Not that any pairing of any two actors on the planet could have saved “Passengers” from its galactic goofiness.

— LOS ANGELES TIMES Collateral Beauty: Scheming co-workers try to prove the insanity of their grieving partner (Will Smith) by arranging for him to meet people representing Death, Love and Time. This cheesy attempt at a holiday tear-jerker is built on a foundation so contrived, the most miraculous thing is that it was actually made. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and brief strong language. 93 minutes. H — RICHARD ROEPER Office Christmas Party: Despite the eminently likable cast, featuring such reliable talents as

Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston and T.J. Miller, this is one of those loud, forced, party-hard movies where everyone onscreen is trying their best to convince us we’re watching a zany, edgy romp — but the antics come across as juvenile and tired. Rated R for crude sexual content and language throughout, drug use and graphic nudity.

105 minutes. HH — RICHARD ROEPER Almost Christmas: A wonderful cast including Danny Glover, Gabrielle Union and J.B. Smoove is unable to rescue writer-director David E. Talbert’s family comedy/drama, which contains precious few genuine laughs and even fewer legitimately earned heart-tugging moments. Rated PG-13 for suggestive material, drug content and language.

H1/2 — RICHARD ROEPER Arrival: As confusing as it is enlightening, Denis Villeneuve’s high-end alien invasion movie tells of a linguistics expert (Amy Adams) called upon to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors. Even most of the what-the-heck moments are beautiful and challenging and cool in a thought-provoking, intergalactic kind of way. Rated PG-13 for brief strong language. 116 minutes. HHH 1/2 — RICHARD ROEPER

“La La Land”

La La Land: Starring a well-paired Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, writer-director Damien Chazelle’s tuneful tribute to classic movie musicals is often stronger in concept than execution, but it’s lovely and transporting all the same. Rated PG. 128 minutes.

“Jason Bourne” (Action, PG-13, 121 m., 2016). At 45, Matt Damon still kicks butt in serious fashion in his fourth appearance as the tightly wound, perpetually restless and conflicted Jason Bourne. This is the best action thriller of the year so far, with a half-dozen terrific chase sequences and fight scenes. Rating: HHH 1/2 GRADE: HHHH Excellent, HHH Good, HH Fair, H Poor.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Donatello was a renowned Italian sculptor. His favorite piece was “Lo Zuccone,” a marble statue of biblical prophet Habakkuk. As Donatello carved his work-in-progress, he addressed it. “Speak, damn you! Talk to me,” he was heard to say on more than a few occasions. Did the stone respond? Judging from the beauty of the final product, I’d have to say yes. One art critic testified that “Lo Zuccone” is a “sublimely harrowing” tour de force, a triumph of “forceful expression,” and “one of the most important marble sculptures of the 15th century.” I suspect you will have Donatello-like powers of conversation in 2017, Aries. If anyone can communicate creatively with stones — and rivers and trees and animals and spirits and complicated humans, for that matter — it’ll be you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): According to Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, “A certain type of perfection can only be realized through a limitless accumulation of the imperfect.”

Let’s amend that thought so it’s exactly suitable for your use in 2017. Here’s the new, Taurus-specific version: “A messy, practical, beautiful type of perfection can be realized through a patient, faithful, dogged accumulation of the imperfect.” To live up to the promise of this motto, make damn good use of every partial success.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): I hope you will be as well-grounded in 2017 as you have ever been — maybe even since your past life as a farmer. I trust you will go a long way toward mastering the arts of being earthy, practical and stable. To do this right, however, you should also work on a seemingly paradoxical task: cultivating a vigorous and daring imagination — as perhaps you did in one of your other past lives as an artist. In other words, your ability to succeed in the material world will thrive as you nurture your relationship with fantasy realms — and vice versa. If you want to be the boss of reality, dream big and wild — and vice versa.

WITH ALAN K. STOUT Tim Meyers is the brewery manager at the ShawneeCraft Brewing Co., Shawnee On Delaware. Meyers is a native of New Jersey, but he has lived in NEPA since seventh grade. He grew up in Archbald and is a graduate of Valley View High School and Marywood University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in photography and a master’s degree in business. He and his wife, Tiffany, live in Shawnee On Delaware.

Meet Tim Meyers …

You’ve been with the ShawneeCraft Brewing Co. for three years. What first led to you getting into that type of work?

In grad school, while I was taking my business classes, I got into home brewing. I’d been a fan of craft beers from the drinking side, and my friend and I decided to try and make some at home. I found it really interesting and for it to be an interesting business, just because there’s so much creativity in it and so many small start-ups were getting their start at that time. I just kind of happened into it as ShawneeCraft was looking for a part-time salesman in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre.

I got my start as a part-time worker, selling beer to bars and restaurants. And over the course of time, (I) worked my way up to a graphic-design role and, as time went on, more of a management role.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Over the past year or so, I’ve gotten into playing hockey in a men’s league. I played a little roller hockey when I was younger, so I’m completely new to it. I’m in the base-level D league in Pittston, and it’s become a really fun hobby. My wife and I also love to go to concerts and see bands and movies.

Who are some of your favorite musical artists?

It’s kind of a wide variety. I really like punk music and that kind of rock. But recently, I’ve gotten more into bluegrass, folk and a little bit of hip-hop.

My sister and I recently went to see Local Natives in Philadelphia, and they were amazing. I’ve been really into them lately.

Favorite city?

I love Philadelphia sports: Flyers, Eagles, Phillies. I’ll always have a tie to Philadelphia, because they’re close to us, and I’ve grown up following What do you enjoy about it? those teams. We end up doing between 20 and 25 throughout the course of the year. And one of the great things about that is that almost all of them are rotating and seasonal. So I always tend to be drinking the newest thing to come out. But I really like hoppy beers, so I tend to stick to our session IPAs. For those who might not be connoisseurs of craft beers, can you explain a session IPA?

since I was a kid. It’s kind of our yearly thing, and I have a lot of family that goes to the same place, so it’s a nice way to reconnect with them.

Favorite thing about NEPA? The arts scene. For (Scranton) being more of a smaller city, there are a lot of people that are really talented and work really, really hard to create and keep a thriving arts culture. Both the visual arts and the music scene are two of my favorite things about this area.

We make a couple of different beers that we call session-style beers. And you’ll see that from other breweries as well. “Session” usually means that it’s lower in alcohol content, so you can have more than one in a session. It’s kind of a code name for a lighter style of beer. We make a session IPA, and we make a session porter. On the other hand, you’ll see imperial beers, which are usually stronger than average in alcohol content. The session IPA is one of the few beers that we do year-round. It’s kind of our reliable IPA, and I tend to really like that one. It’s a style that I really enjoy, and I think we do a good job with it. And it’s nice that it’s nice and light, so you can do a little bit more tasting and not have to worry about having too much to drink.

TIm mEyERS Favorite food?

Cheesesteaks. But I love a good cheeseburger, too. Basically anything with meat and cheese melted on top, I’m happy.

Biggest pet peeve?

I always seem to get pretty aggravated when people drive slow in the left lane and kind of camp out there.

Guilty pleasure?

Reality TV. I can watch “Bar Rescue” for hours.

I love David Fincher movies and Christopher Nolan movies.
