I’d like to talk to you all about the many different types of fish in the world. We are all like fish. The fish in the world are magnificent in the idea that though they don’t seem like they make a big impact in our world, they served and play a big part of our society. California Nevada Hawaii Circle K is like the fish of the world. We are big in numbers and have the ability to serve a big area of the world. Just like any fish in a large swarm, we are all equal, and both leaders and followers. We have a lot of work left to put in for this year. There are many fish in the sea, but we can be bigger! You have the ability to make your Circle K as big or as little as you choose. Take opportunity in becoming the best fish you can be. Nemo had a fun time taking risks, and in the end it worked out because he had a great support system. Find your system, if you feel alone, you can start with me, as I want to be your Dory. Have a great rest of your summer!
It’s always a good time when you hear stories of other member’s Circle K experiences. Not only do you hear the passion in their words as they’re telling it to you but it also gives you a new perspective of our California-Nevada-Hawai’i District and of Circle K International as a whole! Sometimes we get wrapped up in our home club and division, we never get a chance to widen our horizons and explore past what’s familiar. Each school and division can provide a member with a different experience and since we can’t be everywhere at once, it’s nice to be able to see it in the eyes of our wonderful article writters. Thank you for opening up your Circle K story to the district and allowing us to get a glimpse of what it’s like in your club or division! We hope to one day hear your Circle K story soon and try making a new friend outside of your home club/division at our upcoming district events.

Hello CNH, welcome to the first issue of The Sunburst! I hope you are all having an amazing summer, it’s been sunny so stay cool and hydrated! A lot has already happened this term because it seems to have been eventful for everyone! Ranging from finishing up the past term with District Convention to learning about the new and upcoming goals during Spring Training Conference North/South! Thank you to those who submitted articles, photos, and other forms of content for this issue of Sunburst! And if you would like to share your experiences too, I am currently accepting content for the next issue! If you have any video from your events be sure to submit them to Sunny TV so it can be shared to the district! FOOTHILL DIVISIONAL SERVICE PROJECT
PAWS 4 PETS Richard Tzul, Los Angeles City College
The morning after a fun divisional social, Foothill Phoenixes gathered for a divisional service event. Members were to help at the Paws 4 Pets adoption festival. The festival hosted booths and performances all to promote the adoption of dogs - some of which were present at the event. In true CKI fashion some members arrived late. However, there was not much activity at first. Though soon enough work began pouring in for volunteers. The labor included lifting and moving tables, sound equipment, and tents. All of this done in the blistering (almost) summer heat. Whenever possible volunteers huddled under what little shade was around. Thankfully there were cold water bottles and even ice cubes available. Most of the service event was cleaning and packing up but thankfully members got a chance to see and interact with some furry canines. After that everyone departed and some embarked on a long journey home.
COSTA MESA KIWANIS
FIREWORKS SALE Davis Bui, Orange Coast College
Orange Coast College, sponsored by Costa Mesa Kiwanis, kicked off off the summer in July by selling fireworks for a week. The fireworks were held at Palm Harvest Church in Costa Mesa. With each day were 12 hour long shifts where we had bunch of down time to socialize, sell fireworks, and sign holding to lure customers in. Also, included were meals provided for the volunteers by Newport Rib Company, a Kiwanis own diner. To end all the hard work selling and promoting fireworks, Costa Mesa Kiwanis donated fireworks to help Orange Coast College after social.

32ND ANNUAL LUAU Aaron Samson, University of California, Los Angeles
On the evening of Saturday, May 6th, The Hawai’i Club at UCLA hosted their 32nd Annual Luau at UCLA’s Ackerman Grand Ballroom. Several UCLA Circle K members arrived early prior to the event to help set up with the Hawai’i Club. Another Circle K member, Ethan Chee, and I were placed at the entrance of this event to help answer questions about ticket information, dinner time, seating, and other general information about the Luau. I got a chance to meet many of the guests, many of whom came out to support their friends and family performing at the event. Once it got closer to the opening ceremony, the entrance was soon packed with guests. To keep the entrance area under control, Ethan and I were delegated the task of helping keep the line for tickets and dinner uniform and organized. We stood by the doors of the entrance to make sure no guests were entering before the start of the event. This was done to allow the performers to practice and get ready for the show without any distractions from the guests. Once all of the guests were finally seated, Ethan and I went to get our free dinner provided by the Hawai’i Club. While having dinner, I got a chance to watch a couple
of the performances, and I was amazed at the talent being showcased. Once the show ended, a couple Circle K members including myself stayed back to help clean. By spending most of my service time at the entrance of the event, I was able to develop and improve my ability to talk to strangers and be comfortable communicating with people older than me. Growing up, I was always shy and never had the social skills to talk to people, especially adults. But I’ve learned to overcome that fear by just putting myself out there and not being afraid to talk people. I still get nervous around adults, and sometimes find myself stuttering due to my, at times, uncontrollable shyness. However, this service event offered me the opportunity to expand on my social interactions with others by allowing me to be exposed to all the guests and to answer their questions regarding an event I knew nothing about. I hope that this event will help me become more relaxed in similar situations, such as during interviews, Circle K tabling, and just public speaking spaces in general.

63RD DISTRICT CONVENTION Karolyn Jaranilla, University of California, Riverside
What’s a more spook-tacular way to end the Circle K term than with District Convention? This event, also known as DCON, is a yearly event held at the end of each term where clubs from California, Nevada, and Hawaii all come together to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments achieved! It was held very close to home this year at the Riverside Convention Center in Downtown Riverside! To start off the event, we were welcomed to the Convention Center Friday with phantasmic slideshows and formal greetings from our District Board. After, Wong Fu Productions appeared as keynote speakers! They spoke about all the things that many of us college students worry about: knowing what to do with the rest of our lives, the importance of pursuing multiple interests, and relationships/love life (for some reason) among other topics! It was really assuring listening to their experiences with starting off film-making and how their lives progressed after. We then proceeded with caucus for District Board and International

Board positions. Hearing the all the candidates really made me realize how much people want to contribute to and improve the club! Our club met after the caucus to deliberate, it was really cool being able to directly input opinions. The next day I attended very fun and informative workshops! Two of my favorites were Microaggressions and The Art of Drawing. I was really glad there were workshops where we could vent out instances of subtle racism/sexism and express our artistic talents, or lack thereof! With this DCON being my first and last one, I along with 5 other graduating seniors from UCR attended the Senior Honors Reception where we received a stole and a certificate to the afterlife! Afterwards, we gathered in the main room to eat dinner and that’s where A LOT OF THE AWARDS WERE GIVEN! Our school received 22 AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS!! Among these were Distinguished Club Improvement, Distinguished Club, Kiwanian of the Year, 2ND PLACE OUTSTANDING NEWSLETTER, and 1ST PLACE OUTSTANDING TOTAL ACHIEVEMENT FOR GOLD DIVISION! The night ended with
an amazing Talent Show featuring very gifted Circle K members throughout the district! There were also various night time activities after the Talent Show which included photo booths, games, and a dance floor! Things settled down Sunday as the 2016-2017 District Board retired and the 2017-2018 District Board was installed!! Our past District Governor, Alex D. Nguyen, gave a touching farewell speech. Once all business with the District was over, Desert Oasis stepped outside the center to give a Divisional toast to the term which officially ended my DCON experience! Parts of me regret waiting until my very last year to attend DCON, but in the end, I am still so glad I was able to attend one! It is truly amazing to see how hard everyone in the club at the home, division, and district level works at making this organization what it is. It really puts into perspective only a small part of the “I” in Circle K International! Thank you to the DCON Committee for putting such a wonderful event together. All the memories made here are definitely ones I’ll take with me to the afterlife!

delicious lunch, and Divisional Council Meetings, there’s nothing more fun than a weekend dedicated to Circle K. More importantly, I enjoyed seeing members from my Home Club take initiative and present workshops of their own. Being Club President, I saw my members be leaders. I am impressed with the fact that more members continue to get involved and showcase their talents and ideas. Although I’ve graduated, I see the impact these District Leadership Conferences has on members and how Circle K members continue to expand on their leadership and presentation skills. I hope that members continue to take on these opportunities and encourage others to take initiative. Spring Training Conference North was great and no doubt next year’s will be just as great, if not better.

On May 7th, UCLA Circle K members woke up bright and early to attend the Spring Training Conference at CSU Fullerton. Because this was my first STC, I did not know what to expect. Clouds were glooming over us as we arrived, but it was hard not to be drawn into the cheerful atmosphere. Several Kiwanis served everyone pancakes for breakfast and we ate while trying to decide which workshops to attend. From photography to professional development to fellowship, there were so many to choose from! For the first workshop, I decided to go to A-board 101 where we learned how to handle certain situations in the club. Then I went to Technology and Web Design, where I learned the components to building a good website. My last and favorite workshop before lunch was Leadership and Team-building, which was led by our very own UCLA alumnus Garvey Su! We
SPRING TRAINING CONFERENCE
Spring Training Conference North this year was a great event and I am pleased with how it turned out. I’ve attended STC North dating back to 2014. Every year, young leaders present workshops about informative and helpful topics related to Circle K, Life, and Personal Interests. This year was no different - seeing everyone from the Northern Part of our District was something I look forward to because it’s a way for all of us to reconnect and create new memories. This year, I had the opportunity to present a Healthy Living workshop, which I honestly believe was the most helpful workshop. I love talking about health and answering any questions people have on how to start or how I manage to stay healthy while in college. The STC North Chairs - Monica Willemsz and Donald Franks - did a tremendous job putting this entire event together. From the interactive workshops,
played a really fun puzzle activity in groups of four. My group was not able to finish, but we got through four puzzles and we bonded a lot through working together. For lunch we had pizza and chips, then we were off to district meetings! UCLA is a part of the Metro district, and we learned about the activities that clubs from other schools in the district had planned. After the meeting, I went to Graphic Design and Battle of the Sexes. The graphics workshop gave a lot of good pointers for making good graphics, and Battle of the Sexes was an open conversation about stereotypes. At closing, the districts did more cheers and Josef Madrigal received the Outstanding Chairperson Award! STC was a fun-packed day that I will not forget, I met so many amazing people and I can’t wait to put the workshop skills I learned to the test!

Hello CNH! The Communications & Marketing committee has been hard at work creating new resources and content for you all. You can look forward to monthly SunnyTV segments, Bi-Weekly Digests, webinars along with new resources such as a tabling manual, among other things. In the past month, we’ve released a Season 4 SunnyTV trailer and a CNH Style Guide to help with graphic standards. We will be trying our best to provide all of this to you as soon as we can!

Hello everyone! My name is Kim-Mai Hoang, and I am serving you all as the District Convention (DCON) Chair for the 2017-2018 term! The DCON Committee has been working extremely diligently since appointment in order to bring you all the best experience at DCON 2018! We have planned out our tasks for the entire term, narrowed down the theme, and discussed the entire DCON budget! There’s a lot that goes into planning this large-scale event, so I hope you all are looking forward to what our committee has to offer in the future! Thank you!
FALL TRAINING CONFERENCE
Our committee has been hard at work to plan the best Fall Training Conference ever this year! We don’t want to give too much away, but here’s a snippet of what we’ve been doing! As a committee, we’ve been looking at areas for improvment to ensure that this year FTC is as magical as ever. Further, we’re coming up with ways to make this FTC experience unique and special for every attendee! Each commtitee chair is hard at work with planning. Look forward to FTC 2017 because it’s definitely going to be one that you won’t want to miss!
FINANCE & FUNDRAISING
The Finance & Fundraising committee has been working hard making sure that Treasurers and Fundraising Chairs have all the help they need. Most recently we have been planning the first District Event of the school year, Crazy Kompetition for Infants! If you haven’t attended in the past then we highly recommend you do, and if you have then see you again in October. There are other events we’ll be planning and new thing we will be releasing so keep an eye out for that.
KIWANIS FAMILY & FOUNDATION
The KFF has been hard at at work in creating manual resources and meeting with club officers to make sure they are prepared and ready for the upcoming Fall! Additionally, the committee has been brainstorming tabling activities to present at Kiwanis Convention to showcase what Circle K is all about! Being involved with the Kiwanis Family can be one of the most rewarding experience, so make sure to hit up your local Kiwanis Family clubs for some fun events! Gracias!

Evaluation form was released to gain the CNH CKI’s general membership’s understanding about official documents and what they would like to see from the committee. Divisional liaisons are collecting club bylaws from executive board officers, so check your e-mails if you haven’t done so yet!
MEMBER RECOGNITION
During May and June, the Member Recognition Committee worked on the District Awards and Membership Recognition Proposals, which will be released in the July District Board Packet and get voted on at the July District Board Meeting. We have also been having one-on-ones with club officers and educating them about recognition at the different levels of CKI. August will be a big month for district recognition, because awards, manuals, and the Master Records Sheet will be released. It also marks the start of another year of Member Recognition Mondays so stay tuned for that!
MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & EDUCATION
The MD&E Committee has been working to plan and host a successful District Professional Development Conference. We have also started accomplishing the District goal of hosting a minimum of one webinar per month by having the first webinar of the term, CNH District & You- A District Involvement webinar. We’ve also released the Member Hosted Webinar Application for the month of July and plan to have the next webinar by the end of the month. Aside from that, we’ve been working hard to evaluate the needs of the District through different survey forms to create resources for the members of CNH.

During the past several months, the Service Committee has been hard at work planning events such as the service project at District Professional Development Conference and Service Unity Day/Week as well as updating the Service Resource Database on the CNH website. We are so excited to share everything we have been working on with all of you, and we hope you’re ready for another amazing year of service!

FOOTHILL DIVISION END OF THE YEAR BANQUET Diana Mora, Cal Poly Pomona
The Foothill Division recapped and celebrated a year full of stress, memes and accomplishments at the Foothill End of the Year Banquet aka “ The Last Supper”. Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor (20162017), Jesus Martinez, gave a variety of heart felt speeches to whimsical superlatives; such as “Most Tsundere to the Photosynthesis” award. Additionally, graduating and transferring Foothill members were recognized for their dedication and impactful mark! Jesus also announced the school he’s transferring
too, which is Cal Poly Pomona! There was great Italian food, tears, laughs, a lit Photo Booth and the most handsome dog, Joe the dog. Additionally, your current Foothill LTG (aka me) and Desert Oasis LTG got married. However, we are currently divorced due to the crazed concept of “Milk First” (before cereal) . Thank you to all those who helped in executing and planning the banquet! Special thank you to Jesus for serving as our LTG for the 16-17 term, it was a long and emotional journey, but you made it!
MUGGLE QUIDDITCH To kick off the new term LACC hosted its second muggle quidditch tournament at Grand Park, Pasadena on April 7th. Quidditch is a bizarre sport that resembles a combination of rugby, soccer, and even dodgeball. Phoenixes from across the Foothill division attended the social/fundraiser, some played while others simply spectated. Most players became exhausted after a while; the sport was surprisingly intense. Thankfully, there was plenty of water as well as snacks such as granola bars and even Little Cesar’s pizza. The tournament had many highlights including one player literally smashing one of the hoops. All in

all, plenty of fun was had for those who attended. A new addition to this event was a service auction fundraiser. Immediately after the tournament concluded, winning bidders pied volunteers in the face. In total, there were 9 people pied and over $140 raised for the Pediatric Trauma Program, one of our district fundraising initiatives. Muggle Quidditch turned out to be a tremendous success. I’ve chaired an abundance of events but my most personal CKI project has been this. Thank you so much to those who attended and participated and an even bigger thanks to those helped with planning and organizing.
GOLDEN GATExSUNSET JOINT DIVISIONAL COUNCIL MEETING Ryan Tsao, University of California, Berkeley
On a warm June Saturday, members from Golden Gate, Sunset, guests, and Kiwanians gathered for a fun day of barbecue and divisional updates. We started the day getting to know each other while our grill assistants cut ingredients and skewered kebabs with fresh meat and vegetables. Sunset lietenant governor Mark Catolos lead the group in a fun icebreaker while our district governor Lawrence and I started grilling the teriyaki wings. Our charcoal was slow to get hot, so we decided to pass out wings off
the grill while people were waiting in line. Shoutouts to Ana Chavez, Denny Cao, and Linh Nguyen for helping on the grill! Later, we split into our respective divisions for our DCMs. Two productive meetings later, we cleaned up and Joe Samson from the District Kiwanis Family and Foundation committee lead a K-fam workshop. After people mingled in the park and playground, and one member even broke out his guitar and started a music circle. We all stopped by Gong Cha later for some refreshing boba before parting ways.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST Don Hull, Greater Kiwanis Club of Brea
To show their appreciation for all the help Circle K has given them, the Kiwanis Clubs of Placentia and La Mirada cooked and provided a pancake breakfast to the Circle K’ers attending their annual Spring Training Conference held at Cal-State-Fullerton. Kiwanians from Brea, Cypress, Greater Anaheim, and Fullerton participated.

GARDENING WITH K-KIDS A CHICKEN-HUNTING EXPERIENCE Catherine Li, University of California, Los Angeles
On April 16, 2017, I went to Playa Del Rey Elementary School with four other UCLA Circle K members. It was Easter Sunday so the kids were all excited for the egg hunt. As some other volunteers were hiding the Easter eggs in the school’s garden, we distracted the kids with arts and crafts. We cut big pieces of mesh and rolled them into cones and had the kids put hay and branches inside. We hung these cones on the loquat trees so that birds could take materials from them to make their nests. It was my first time trying the loquat fruit! After that, we facilitated the egg hunt by helping the younger children and subtly hinting the locations of some hidden eggs. Everyone was very excited when they found eggs, especially those that contain their favorite candy. It was really fun for me too because it was my first time at an egg hunt. The egg hunt ended quickly because the kids were all talented at finding eggs in the bushes. However, the service had only started. We volunteered to help the manager of the school gardens mulch their butterfly habitat. It was a small but pretty garden with flowers and vegetables. Sadly, many invasive weeds had taken over the empty spaces of the garden so we needed to get rid of them first. Luckily we were provided with gloves
to protect our hands. In the process we learned to identify the species that weren’t supposed to be there as well as the plants we wanted to keep, such as sunflowers and cilantro. After cleaning up the garden, we used wheel barrels to transfer mulch from a big pile in one corner of the school to the butterfly habitat. Then we applied a thick layer of mulch around the plants. We don’t often have opportunities to use wheel barrels so it was fun trying to maintain the balance while pushing the single-wheel wheel barrels. We felt super proud when we finished the work and saw how much the garden changed from before. The last part of our time there was unexpectedly interesting. The school had some hens living in the garden. They were walking around the garden freely but we needed to make them enter their house so they could stay safe for the rest of the day. This task was not as easy as it sounds because the chickens were reluctant to go inside. One chicken hid in the bushes and it took us a long time to find her. As we were waiting for the final chicken to enter the house, the others escaped! After a long struggle, we finally got all the chickens back in.

SUBREGION B TRUSTEE
Hello hello, my beautiful home, the CNH CKI District! At the first 2017-2018 District Board meeting, I talked about the difference between being an influential leader and an impactful leader in which influence in the capacity to have an effect on character, development, or behavior of someone or something and impact is to come into forcible contact with another object. I followed my speech with this question: what kind of leader do you want to be? This past year, I served as Subregion B Trustee, a representative from our home subregion which includes California-Nevada-Hawai’i, Rocky Mountain, and Southwest Districts. From working with our general members, clubs, district board officers, governors, and with my counterparts on the international board, I urged each entity to never “throw away [their] shot” (Hamilton fans screaming in the distance.), and with my shot, I hope that we were able to come closer as a subregion whether it was through attending inter-district events, supporting each other in the Sub B Facebook group, or celebrating each other’s accomplishments. At CKIx, I was ecstatic to see that so many of you, including our candidates, shared the love that I had for our subregion, and I hope that we will further be involved on the international level to showcase what CNH has to offer. CNH, thank you so much for believing in me and for supporting me every step of the way. I hope that throughout this year, I have been an impactful leader for our subregion. Someone who will also need your love and support throughout their term is 2017-2018 Subregion B Trustee Banna Tesfay from Southwest District.
