Winners of the 2018 National Awards of Landscape Excellence

CONTINUED FROM COVER... Projects are nominated by the nine provincial associations each year and adjudicated by a panel of industry experts through a blind (company name and location redacted) process. CNLA extends gratitude to NALE 2018 sponsors Caterpillar, John Deere, DynaSCAPE, Mark’s Commercial, and Hort Protect, as well as Scott’s Nursery for supplying beautiful floral centrepieces.

LNB/LPEI honours Jim Landry

Landscape New Brunswick and Landscape P.E.I. honoured Executive Director Jim Landry with a Lifetime Recognition Award at the 2018 National Awards of Landscape Excellence on August 15, 2018, in St. Andrews, N.B. LNB/LPEI President Karen Carrier made the surprise announcement, kicking off the awards presentation. “As E.D. for LNB/PEI, Jim Landry is well known for keeping the momentum going,” Carrier said. "He is always there to assist and even push us when we need that extra infusion of encouragement to keep moving our industry forward. In addition to lending an ear to member concerns and organizing events that bring our trades people and suppliers together, he has also been instrumental in promoting the Red Seal Apprenticeship program in our provinces. Even when we think a block may not move forward in a given year, Jim pushes on and returns to us with a big smile and a sigh of relief as he successfully exclaims that we have once again managed to secure enough ‘bums in seats’ to run the program. Beyond the day to day communication with members, Jim encourages us to be

proud of what we do and to share that with our communities. While he supports each of us who have taken on the challenge to promote our industry through events such as Pink Days in Bloom and National Tree Day, he too has taken up the challenge many times over and even offers his free time to support such events in a volunteer capacity.”

Green for Life Industry Award

Joe Salemi of DynaSCAPE CNLA presented DynaSCAPE Software with the 2018 Green for Life Industry Award. CNLA President, Bruce Hunter made the award presentation to DynaSCAPE’s Product Marketing Manager Joe Salemi. “The Green for Life Industry Award was created to recognize the incredible companies that contribute significantly to the industry, environment and local Canadian communities,” Hunter, said. “The CNLA Executive Committee chose to honour DynaSCAPE because of its support not only of CNLA and its provincial associations, but to the broader communities that it is a part of. They are leaders in their field, committed to raising the level of professionalism in landscaping.”

CNLA Newsbrief

Fall 2018

Staying current in a rapidly evolving field: the living architecture academy 2017 and 2018 have been big years for the growth of the green roof and wall industries in North America. These sustainable technologies are becoming less expensive, and a broader acknowledgement of their many benefits has been occurring in the building and landscape industry’s consciousness. In the last two years, more municipalities than ever before have amended existing sustainability guidelines, adopted new mandates and by-laws regarding green roofs and walls, or have begun the long process of introducing green roof and wall legislation.

ASA Flat + Lofts, Portland Credit GGLO 2017 saw both San Francisco and Denver adopt green roof legislation. The San Francisco Better Roofs Ordinance was amended, taking effect January 1st, mandating between 15-30% coverage of solar or living roofs on most new constructions within the city, this award winning policy unlocks 30% of the city’s land area currently occupied by unused roofspace. In November, a citizen ballot initiative passed in Denver requiring the construction of green roofs and/or solar installations on most new and existing buildings to combat the urban heat island effect and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2018, this trend has continued, with the promise of more to come in the future. After years of consultation and planning, the city of Portland adopted an ecoroof requirement as a part of their Central City 2035 plan, requiring 100% coverage in all buildings over a net 20,000 square feet. Additionally, cities such as New York, Vancouver, and Ottawa are now exploring the benefits of legislating green roofs on new buildings,

10

particularly as the impacts of a changing climate increasingly affect or urban centers. Policy and education are two of the most important factors in market growth. Public policy support continues to act as one of the primary drivers of the green roof and wall markets, having been proven to help reduce the upfront costs of green roofs and monetize their many public benefits. A study by ARUP for the United States General Services Administration produced in 2011, The Benefits and Challenges of Green Roofs on Public and Commercial Buildings, found that over the course of 50 years an extensive light weight, low maintenance green roof would generate the equivalent of $38 per square foot of public benefits. These benefits are realized through savings on municipal stormwater management, moderation of the urban heat island effect, and improvements to local air quality, among other benefits. Education and training opportunities enhance practical job experience, and provide a baseline of quality for practitioners in the field, giving them the tools and resources to produce successful and resilient projects, particularly in the rapidly evolving green roof and wall fields. Green roofs and walls are particularly complex given their multi-disciplinary nature, drawing on specializations like building science, horticulture, irrigation, waterproofing, plant physiology, structural engineering and more. To better address this growing need for high-quality training in green roofs and walls, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities established the Living Architecture Academy (https://livingarchitectureacademy.com), a online platform for training, accreditation, and continuing education. Providing training opportunities in

green roof and wall design, installation, and maintenance, as well as a variety of other living building systems and green infrastructure topics such as biophilic design and integrated water management, these cutting-edge courses enable professionals to remain current in this rapidly evolving industry. Additionally, through the Living Architecture Academy, it has never been easier, or less expensive to become an accredited Green Roof Professional (GRP). Established in 2009, the Green Roof Professional Training and Accreditation (greenroofs. org/green-roof-professional-training) program was launched in order to bridge the interdisciplinary knowledge gap in industry training and best practice. Since then, over 5,000 professionals have taken training courses which are recognized by the AIA, ASLA and GBCI. More than 750 professionals, mostly architects and landscape architects, have successfully completed the multi-disciplinary Green Roof Professional exam and earned the Accredited GRP designation. Now for just $1300 CAD ($999 USD) you get full access to the online training courses, all reference materials, one attempt at the GRP Accreditation exam, and a year membership with Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. Green roof and wall technologies are among the most efficient practices for addressing modern urban infrastructure and climate concerns while the stakes for success and failure are often very high. Now has never been easier to get professional training and enter the growing field of Living Architecture. Article proivided by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

Member Services Two realities of slip and fall cases by: Ian A. Mair, Moodie Mair Walker LLP A couple of recent court cases highlight two realities of litigation for winter maintenance contractors who get sued in slip and fall lawsuits. First, a winter maintenance contractor can successfully defend itself in court, if it can demonstrate that it fulfilled its contractual obligations to the owner of the property. Second, it’s highly unlikely that a winter maintenance contractor can extract itself from a slip and fall lawsuit early, by means of a motion for summary judgment. Winter maintenance contractors will be judged on how well they fulfill their contracts. In Flowers vs. Allterrain Contracting Inc., a 2017 decision of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, the plaintiff and her boyfriend had been shopping in a Wal-Mart store at the Halifax Shopping Centre. As they walked

out, across the sidewalk, the plaintiff slipped and fell. She testified she fell on a patch of ice. She sued the owners of the shopping centre and Allterrain, the winter maintenance contractor.

Brunswick and Landscape P.E.I. Executive Director Jim Landry says Scott’s Nursery is admired in the region by both customers and industry peers. “George and his family, which extends to include many long serving employees, are highly respected for their involvement in moving this whole green industry forward and upward,” Landry says. “They are continually offering time and resources for Landscape NB/PEI and for that we are forever grateful. In fact, they generously supplied the floral arrangements for the National Awards and always have done likewise for our own provincial galas. Scott’s epitomizes everything we want our garden centres in Canada to be. That being professional, customer based, community involved, industry supporting and so many other positive attributes that we would have to change the font size to squeeze them all in. Plus it is worth saying that you would not find anyone in N.B that would testify otherwise.”

Sheridan Nurseries hires new CEO and President After five decades, Karl Stensson, CEO and president of Sheridan Nurseries, recently announced he will be stepping down. Stennson will continue in a reduced capacity as vice executive chairman and director of brand integrity for Sheridan. “It has been an honour to have worked with so many talented and dedicated people at Sheridan to help the company grow into the leader that it is today,” Stensson said. Sheridan Nurseries named Colin Cruji CEO and president. Cruji joins the Ont.-based nursery grower and retailer from Canada Bread Company, a division of Grupo Bimbo where he was senior vice-president.

Pesticide regulation report coming this fall

LCC Chair Cable Baker attended the European Landscape Contractors Association (ELCA) Presidium meeting in May in Zurich, Switzerland. Strategy meetings were held with some 20 countries in attendance. LCC in collaboration with all committees, will be reaching out to the ELCA to investigate the possibility of a visit to Canada for an exchange of ideas and best practices.

The National Garden of Canada “Centre for Environmental Excellence” Working Group met with National Capital Commission (NCC) officials Anne Menard, executive director, capital stewardship and Marc Corriveau, director of urban lands, in August. Efforts are being made to host a stakeholder meeting and symposium in Ottawa this year, with the goal of bringing key individuals together and creating momentum for the project.

Landscape Canada is currently reviewing the initial draft of the report on the status of pesticide regulations across Canada. LCC commissioned the study by Peter Isaacson (CNLA’s IPM and Minor Use Coordinator) on federal, provincial and municipal responsibilities for pesticide regulation, as well as municipal pesticide bylaws in various provinces. The information will “allow landscapers and green industry specialists to better understand and compare regulations across Canada,” the study proposal states. LCC approved the $2,000 report during a May 29, 2018 conference call.

Participate in the 201819 industry wage survey CNLA is conducting a wage survey starting in the fall to update statistics for our members. The last survey was conducted in 2014-15. Wage information provides a valuable picture of the industry for member companies and can be used to attract labour.

CNLA encourages members to gather information prior to completing the survey. Information required includes: Average base hourly wage: total the number of employees working within a specific job description and divide that total by the average base hourly wage of those employees. Optimal fertilizer application rates in container nursery crop production Dr. Youbin Zheng, VRIC, UofG: Excess fertilization is costly, can injure plants and cause unnecessary nutrient runoff, resulting in environmental damage. Insufficient fertilization can result in plants showing symptoms of nutrient deficiencies, reduce crop productivity, and eventually reduce the efficiency of other resource inputs. positive rankings, four other trial plants – Andromeda polifolia, Cotoneaster franchetii, Larix laricina and Picea abies, also show commercial potential. Greening Canada’s highways Dr. Darby McGrath, VRIC: Research demonstrates that trees can survive beyond the critical post-transplant window in unremediated soils; mortality increases in years 3 and thereafter. Therefore, remediated soils provide the right conditions for trees to become established and survive without aftercare. A soil remediation calculator has been developed.

Eco-integrated green walls for indoor gardening and commercial building Dr Blanche Dansereau, Dr Martine Dorais (AAFC): The project tested five wall modules, several growing medium, fertilization regimes (organic, conventional) and biostimulants, including Si, on a wide range

wireless tensiometers Dr. Charles Goulet, Université Laval: A new generation of wireless tensiometer that measures the water available to the plant and allows precise irrigation control was evaluated. The best clustering practices established; irrigation strategies in a commercial setting and demonstrated that water use can be reduced while maintaining an optimal growth. Impact of turfgrass fertilization on nutrient losses through runoff and leaching Dr. Guillaume Gregoire; Université Laval: Results show that properly maintained turfgrass reduces runoff volume and P losses compared to unmaintained turf. These results will be helpful to government agencies and municipalities considering the implementation of bylaws to restrict the use of fertilizers on turfgrass.
