The provincial green industry associations across the country have developed stellar Awards of Excellence programs to highlight the great work of the industry, and to give their members a marketing edge over their compeition. Every year, members from across the country submit their best work and compete with their peers for top honours. Qualifying to enter the Awards of Excellence program is an achievement all in its’ own, however winning an Award of Excellence is truly an achievement to be proud of. Winners of provincial Awards of Excellence programs use this honour as a powerful marketing opportunity to their current and potential clients. Several winners promote their awards on their websites, flyers, brochures, catalogues, and business cards. Some winners have also been known to promote their honours on the sides of their pick-up trucks. The National Awards of Landscape Excellence creates an exclusive marketing opportunity for entrants. In order to enter into the National Awards, your provincial association must submit your winning entry on your behalf. There are two categories: landscape construction/installation; and landscape maintenance. Your provincial association may submit up to three entries per category for a total of six entries per provincial association. This is a very exclusive group! The National Awards of Landscape Excellence could not take place without the help of our dedicated judges. Thank you very much:

award of excellence for landscape construction

Winner

Watermark Gardens Shaughnessy Residence - The clients, an architect of national stature and an avid gardener, asked Watermark Gardens to help the family realize their vision of a contemporary front garden for their home. The architect sketched and constructed a scale model of some of the elements they were considering, including changes in levels, space for entertaining and for solitude, a ‘waterwall’ focal point, a steel post and cable fence, surfaces of concrete and stone, and specimen planting, all in a very modern style. The gardener was looking forward to us preparing the garden beds for her to create her year-round masterpiece. Working closely with the clients, Watermark massaged the landscape plan, suggested and sourced materials, helped work out construction details, and completed the installation. Given the limited area of the garden and its very public frontage, there was little room for error in calculation. The resulting garden is simple and elegant, a striking

OF

complement to the Craftsman-style house and the neighbourhood.

a winter celebration of the green industry

Landscape New Brunswick Awards of Excellence

N a t i o n a l Awa rd s o f L a n d s c a p e E xc e l l e n c e Saint John, NB | Hilton Saint John | February 8, 2008

Saint John, NB - The CNLA Board of Directors, members of Landscape New Brunswick, Landscape Nova Scotia, and Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador made the trek to Saint John, NB to address issues affecting the nursery, garden centre, and landscape sectors so that CNLA could align provincial agendas into national priorities. The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council also met with an industry focus group to discuss revisions to the National Occupational Standard for Landscape Horticulturists for the development of a Red Seal trade. CNLA board members and the national certification committee participated in many events in conjunction with Communities in Bloom's WinterLights Celebration. The meetings, focus groups, and social networking events were highlighted by the National Awards of Landscape Excellence, held on the evening of February 8, 2008. Over 130 industry professionals attended the gala event that was prefaced by the Landscape New Brunswick Awards of Excellence. The evening's agenda was tightly packed, but the masters of ceremonies were definitely up for the task. Garth Nickerson of NB Dept of Agriculture & Rural Development, and Darrell Nameth, CLP of Lawn Rangers Landscaping orchestrated the first half of the evening. Christene LeVatte, CLP of Highland Landscapes for Lifestyle and Harold Deenen, CLP of Hank Deenen's Landscaping presided over the National Awards of Landscape Excellence. Comic relief was provided by local personality, Jimmy the Janitor! Capping the evening off was the presentation of CNLA's first-ever President's Award for Volunteerism. CNLA President, Michael Murray of Murray's Horticultural Services Ltd. (pictured above on the left) presented Mr. Alexander (Sandy) Roberton, CLP with the award for his contribution, commitment, and dedication to the industry. Sandy was a pioneer in the development of the certification programs in Canada (CHT, CLD, and CLP).
