Venues Orkney: The Orkney Summer School will take place at Orkney College, East Road, Kirkwall, which is less than 0.5 miles from Kirkwall’s town centre. Shetland: The Shetland Summer School will take place in Unst, Shetland’s most northerly island (first day) and at the North Atlantic Fisheries College (NAFC), Scalloway, 5 miles from Lerwick, Shetland’s capital.

Orkney & Shetland Summer Schools 2011
Study Mode Morning seminars followed by guided afternoon fieldtrips around the islands. Lectures run from 10-12noon, with most fieldtrips leaving at 1pm and return for 4pm. Check individual programmes for times.
University-level study in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland
Cost £400 per week, to include all lectures and field trips, as well as one night’s accommodation and meals in Unst (Shetland Summer School only). Programmes are ILA registered (see below). Local island residents - £250 (local Summer School only)
Travel & Accommodation There are excellent ferry and air links to both islands, with links from all major Scottish airports as well as a direct link from London to Shetland. Accommodation is available on campus at the NAFC in Shetland. There is no similar accommodation in Orkney, but there are many bed & breakfast establishments in close walking distance, and two hostels within Kirkwall.

This course is accredited with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and is worth 15 SQA credits. In order to qualify for credits, a written paper will be required. If you are interested in gaining credit, tick the appropriate box on the application form.
Individual Learning Account, Scotland If you live in Scotland, you may be eligible for an Individual Learning Account payment of up to £200. Check their website for details, www.ilascotland.org.uk. You must have your ILA in place before applying in order for it to be eligible for part-payment towards our Summer Schools. The ILA is only to be used for part-payment towards a full week of Summer School.

On Thursday 21st July you will be able to join the opening ceremony of the Tall Ships events in Lerwick, with opportunities to join various associated activities and events during the Tall Ships Week (21-24 July).
