ACADEMIC COACHING AND PEER MENTORING

A personalized, one-on-one process of helping a student examine academic concerns and perceived barriers to success. It entails an interactive relationship that focuses on the student’s personal and/or professional goals and then helps the student to develop the necessary skills to become responsible for their actions and decisions.

Academic coaching has five objectives, including:

• Goal setting and task/time management skills • Identification of challenges and barriers to success • Guidance to personal responsibility for academic success • Academic study skills and strategies • Referrals to other campus resources

A peer mentor is an upperclassman who works one-on-one to provide students semester-long support in areas such as the transition from high school or another institution, goal setting, and connecting students to campus resources. Students can meet with a peer mentor up to once a week starting the second week of each semester. We recommend students come in early and often to gain the most benefit.

Students can expect to meet with an academic coach three to four times a semester; however, they may request more meetings. This presents students with new techniques provided by the coach to find what tactics work best for the student when preparing for class.
