(PU-RCSI)

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) was founded in 1784 initially to provide for surgical training and to regulate the practice of surgery. The demand for surgeons was so acute during the Napoleonic Wars that a site for the College was acquired on St Stephens Green in Dublin in 1804 and RCSI celebrated the bicentenary of its headquarters location in St Stephens Green in 2010.

RCSI has played a major role in medical education and training in Ireland for over 200 years. Building on its heritage in surgery the College’s ethos and purpose has been to “enhance human health through endeavour, innovation and collaboration in education, research and service.”

RCSI Today RCSI, with a total of 3,384 students from over 60 nations and more than 800 staff, is one of the world’s leading international medical schools and is the largest medical school in Ireland. The College also provides undergraduate courses in pharmacy and physiotherapy. In addition to surgical training, RCSI delivers postgraduate training and education through its Faculties of Radiology, Dentistry, Sports & Exercise Medicine, the School of Postgraduate Studies, the Institute of Leadership and the National Surgical Training Centre.

The RCSI Research Institute is one of Ireland’s foremost research centers with more than €22m funding in 2010.

Penang Medical College (PMC) is a unique partnership in medical education between the Penang State Government, RCSI and University College Dublin (UCD). RCSI Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) was established in 2004 to provide undergraduate courses in Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery and Postgraduate studies in Nursing, Healthcare Ethics and Law.

Perdana University – RCSI in Malaysia Perdana University – RCSI (PU-RCSI) School of Medicine offers a five-year undergraduate medical education programme and training relevant to national needs in Malaysia, which will enable its graduates to enter postgraduate training in the medical specialty of their choice. The curriculum uniquely features health-promotion as well as disease prevention and treatment. Students will learn to understand the influence of health and disease on the individual, family and society and how to approach clinical conditions in a broad context, appreciating the personal and social dimension as well as the biomedical basis.

Students will be prepared to take progressively increasing levels of clinical responsibilities and to develop leadership roles for future healthcare provision in Malaysia. To this end, the curriculum is designed to ensure that students develop a balanced perspective of domiciliary, community and hospital care, and acquire a sound knowledge of the principles of both the science and art of medicine. Students will be exposed to a variety of clinical specialties providing them with comprehensive training in addition to enhancing their career options, both at home and abroad.

The partnership of PU-RCSI School of Medicine and Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (PUGSOM) – in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will transform the landscape of medicine in Malaysia.

PU-RCSI School of Medicine

Perdana University was officially launched on 12 September 2011 and Y.A.Bhg. Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad was installed as the First Chancellor.

The Academic year began on 19 September 2011 with a one-week Induction Programme. A total of 71 students are enrolled in the first year of PU-RCSI School of Medicine.

The MB BCh BAO degrees are recognised by the Irish Medical Council (IRC), the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and other regulatory bodies throughout the world. The degrees allow the holder to pursue postgraduate training worldwide.

 One of the five recognised Colleges of the National University of Ireland  Sister undergraduate medical Schools include Penang Medical College with University College Dublin (PMC) and RCSI Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB)  The national body for surgical education and training in Ireland  A sister institute of the Royal Surgical Colleges of the United Kingdom (London, Glasgow and Edinburgh)  Faculties of Radiology, Dentistry, Sports & Exercise Medicine, the School of Postgraduate Studies, the Institute of Leadership and the National Surgical Training Centre  Strong research profile – The Irish Government Research Agency Foras in 2009 reported that in the matter of scientific publications, “RCSI has had an exceptional profile, having achieved the highest citation impact of any Irish third level institution” RCSI History – The College has produced many illustrious surgeons throughout its history, including:  William Dease, one of the College founders and the first Professor of Surgery in Ireland;  Abraham Colles whose name is associated with the Colles’ fractures of the wrist and the Colles’ fascia, an anatomical membrane in the pelvis;  Arthur Jacob who described the membrane that bears his name and contains the rods and cones in the eye, as well as Jacob’s ulcer;

 Sir Thomas Myles, the first surgeon to wear gloves and his steriliser was a fish kettle, which stood on the stove on the kitchen fire of the Old Richmond Hospital;  Terence John Millin, one of the most distinguished urological surgeons of the 20th century;  Professor Lord Ara Darzi, Graduate and Fellow of the College, Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery at Imperial College London. Knighted for his services in medicine and surgery in 2002.

Honorary Fellowship is the highest award the RCSI can bestow on an individual for exceptional achievement. Notable recipients include Louis Pasteur (1886), HRH Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan Sultan Azlan Muhibuddin Shah (1991 & 2000), Y.A.Bhg. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (1991), Mother Theresa of Calcutta (1995), President Nelson Mandela (1996) and Sir Bob Geldof (2007).

Students graduating from the PU-RCSI School of Medicine are conferred with the primary medical degrees of the National University of Ireland, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor in the Art of Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO). In addition, they are awarded the historical licentiates of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland LRCP & S(I).

Each academic year comprises two semesters. The curriculum is modularised in three (3) cycles: Junior, Intermediate and Senior.

Varied teaching and learning methodologies are used to develop the medical sciences and clinical competencies of the core curriculum, including lectures, tutorials, anatomy room teaching, online Histology and Radiology tutorials and simulation for acquisition of practical skills.

In the Junior Cycle, clinical case studies apply lecture content in the biomedical sciences to clinical medicine in small group tutorials.

 International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB): 33 points excluding bonus points, 6 subjects must include Chemistry at Higher Level (minimum score of 5), Mathematics, English, Biology and/or Physics  Malaysian University Matriculation Exams: Minumum of GPA 3.5 in one sitting, subjects must include Chemistry with minimum grades of A B B B and English  MUET: Minimum score of Band 4  IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5 with no individual section lower than 5.5  TOEFL: Minimum score of 550 (213 computer based or 79 internet based)  Interview: Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview at PU-RCSI School of Medicine

Throughout the programme, students will acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes expected of graduates from a centre of excellence.

To facilitate staff and students, the curriculum is mapped in an electronic ‘Virtual Learning Environment’ (VLE) providing students with access at all times to the academic calendar as well as the outline, learning objectives and full lecture notes for each module.

 Australian Matriculation: 95% aggregate TER/UAI 95 must include Chemistry combined with two subjects – Physics, Biology and/or Mathematics in Year 12

PU-RCSI School of Medicine is committed to the delivery of an outcomes-based curriculum, which adheres to the World Federation of Medical Education guidelines, for quality in medical education.

The Junior Cycle of the five-year programme extends over three semesters, from September of the first year to January of the second year (18 months). The Intermediate Cycle follows over a further three semesters (18 months).

The Senior Cycle consists of the final two years of the programme. During the Senior Cycle, students rotate through the teaching hospitals on clinical attachments in Medicine and Surgery and associated subspecialties.

 GCE ALevels (A B B) / STPM (A B+ B+): A Level subjects must include Chemistry combined with Mathematics, Biology and/or Physics

Students learn effective communication and clinical skills, initially with simulated patients and later with patients and their families in both hospital and community environments. Students also receive training in such practical skills as basic life support.

Personal and professional development is a key feature throughout the curriculum and focuses strongly on skills and attitudes necessary for practice in today’s healthcare environment.

Planned Facilities The permanent campus of Perdana University will be located on a 130-acre site in the Mardi Agricultural Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) in Serdang, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia.
