SVG PM Proposes Vote to Remove the Queen as Head of State “So, I propose that matter. The Leader of the Opposition, are you ready for us to go to a referendum on removing the Queen? And I will tell the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, if you start the process and say 'yes' and anytime you dance and start say 'no,' I pull the plug on the process.” However, Leacock, noted that there are other Caribbean countries, including Jamaica that are not republics but have national awards. “Why is republicanism a prerequisite to have a system of award?” the opposition lawmaker said. But Gonsalves said Vincentians validated politically the Queen as head of state of the country. “Before, it was a negotiated fiction, you now make it a political reality. The NDP, by your leadership; you can't duck that,” he said.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves Monday proposed a single-item referendum asking the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to decide whether to replace Britain's Queen Elizabeth with a non-executive, home-grown president as head of state. But Gonsalves told Parliament that he would only pursue the referendum if there is bipartisan support. In 2009, Vincentians overwhelmingly rejected the proposed revised constitution with 29,019 “no” votes and 22,493 “yes” votes. “I agree that we are now 12 years away from the referendum,” said Gonsalves, who had previously said he would leave the question of constitutional reform to future leaders. On November 30, last year, Barbados removed the Queen of England as its head of state, electing Dame Sandra Mason as its first local head of state. Earlier, opposition lawmaker, Major St. Clair Leacock, who is a vice-president of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) noted that Gonsalves had recently received the highest national award from the Cuban government. He said this raises the question of national awards or rewards for Vincentians for meritorious service. “What is stopping us?” Leacock said. Gonsalves said also that if there is bipartisan support for the referendum a committee will also be set up to establish national honors, calling further for a simultaneous establishment of a body “to carry out a process of decolonization in names. “We change the name of Victoria Park. We

I will tell you this. I am “ prepared, if the opposition agrees today, before the end of the year or early next year to put one question in a referendum: to have a home-grown president in the manner in which I've just described, a non-executive president, and as was laid out in the proposed Constitution, and let us go with that one single issue to the people to complete the national democratic task. – PM Ralph Gonsalves

change the name of Higginson Street and other places. Murrays Road, cause is a colonial administrator. And we do that, especially at this time of fresh hope….” Gonsalves also suggested that at the same time the country would go forward with the recommendation to name as national heroes, George Agusutus McIntosh, Ebenezer Theodore Joshua, Robert Milton Cato, and J.P. Eustace. He suggested that there be “all party unity” on this, though the law does not require it. Prime Minister Gonsalves said the National Heroes Committee would have to be reconstituted, as one member has died, and two other members have “resigned or are not in the committee no more.” He said the committee would also consider “whether or not one or two women who are deserving to fit the criteria of national hero and get on with the process to support constitutional decolonization to support the entire process of mental decolonization and these steps along the way.

By-election to be held in British Virgin Islands to replace former premier Premier of the British Virgin Islands Dr Natalio Wheatley says once the disgraced former Premier Andrew Fahie vacates his seat in the House of Assembly, a by-election will be held. Speaking recently, Speaker of the House of Assembly Corine GeorgeMassicote said she would not be granting Fahie leave/permission to be absent from any future sittings of the House until his circumstances in the United States change. This means the former premier will be forced to vacate his seat as the constitution indicates any member who misses three consecutive sittings of the legislature without leave from the Speaker will have to be removed as a member. According to Wheatley, he will look at the rules that govern the House of Assembly and the Constitution to decide

A5

how best to proceed with the matter. “There are a number of ways where a member's seat can be vacated, and it is well publicized that if you miss three sittings without having the permission of the Speaker then the seat would vacate. If the seat vacates, it would trigger a byelection and that's what the constitution says I believe it is within 60 days of the seat being vacated and a by-election, under our Constitution, must happen if the seat is vacated,” Dr. Wheatley said. The premier noted that the fourth sitting of the House held last week, was the first sitting Fahie missed as he was given leave by the Speaker on the prior sitting. Dr. Wheatley stated the sitting on Tuesday – the fifth– was the second missed by Fahie and the next sitting – the sixth– will be the third consecutive sitting missed by the first district

representative. In relation to the Speaker's decision, Wheatley said he did not consult with the Speaker before her announcement, and he made it clear that George-Massicote is completely independent. “She is independent of myself and any political party and that is a part of the reason we wanted to select her because she does not have any known political affiliations and we wanted to ensure that we had a speaker that would be straight down the middle. Not even perception of bias,” the premier said. Fahie was arrested at the Miami-Opa Locka Airport in late April and is facing life imprisonment if convicted on the drug trafficking and money laundering charges brought against him by the United States government.

even meet the “minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking”. But in a statement Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Dale Marshall said Bridgetown “is heartened to learn that Barbados has been upgraded to Tier 2,” adding that the “upgrade represents significant work on the part of the National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons. “I wish to congratulate them for their perseverance and commitment to the task at hand. We are determined to prevent the heinous crime of Trafficking in Persons getting a solid foothold in Barbados. I also wish to thank all those who have partnered with us, particularly on our public education and sensitization programme.” Marshall said this upgrade cannot be taken for granted and the task force and government will not rest on their laurels. “There is still a great deal of work to be done to ensure that Barbados is able to identify and appropriately support vulnerable persons and victims, as well as ensure that perpetrators feel the full force of the law. “These are not tasks that can be accomplished overnight, but with the help of the Barbadian public we will succeed. Again, I urge Barbadians, if you see something, say something. Trafficking in Persons is a vicious crime, an attack on a person's human rights that must not be allowed to flourish in this country.” Barbados attained a rating of Tier 2 after the United States said the government “does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so” It said the government demonstrated overall increasing efforts compared with the previous reporting period, considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its antitrafficking capacity; therefore, Barbados was upgraded to Tier 2. “These efforts included significantly increasing investigations; initiating two prosecutions and doing so for the first time since 2013; identifying a victim for the first time since 2016; improving victim screening, including by assessing whether authorities inappropriately incarcerated victims; making efforts to address complicity among police officers; and launching a public awareness campaign. “However, the government did not meet the minimum standards in several key areas. The government has never secured a trafficking conviction under the Trafficking in Persons Prevention Act. The anti-trafficking law did not provide penalties that were commensurate with other serious crimes. The government did not contribute to training for any officials.”

Congratulations to Caribbean Athletes The 2022 World Championships of track and field is now in the history books as 192 countries took part in the biggest track and field spectacle outside the Olympics. Besides the issues relating to travel permits, the host USA must be commended for a wonderful show. It was the first time the event was staged in the USA and the second in the Americas since Canada in 2001. Twenty Caribbean countries participated, and five had a medal haul of 16, including five gold, nine silver, and one bronze. After missing the medal stands for 13 years, Barbados was back and collected a bronze courtesy of Sada Williams in the 400 meters. Shaunae Miller-Uibo of Bahamas finally added the World Championship title to her illustrious collection of medals in the 400m. Miller-Uibo, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, and Williams completed a clean sweep, taking gold, silver, and bronze. Unfortunately, MillerUibo could not add another medal in the 400 relays as some of her teammates got ill and were advised against running by the team’s doctor. Grenada pocketed gold and silver via the efforts of Anderson Peters, who took gold in the Javelin, while Kirani James pocketed silver in the 400 meters. Anderson defended his title by beating Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India. James, the Olympic champion, now has a medal of all colors, having won gold in 2011 and bronze in 2015 to cap an incredible career in the 400 meters. The Dominican Republic doubled its World Championships medal haul in any one staging of the event when its 4x400 mixed relay team

captured the first gold at the championship to go with Paulino’s silver in the 400. Track and field powerhouse Jamaica was the pick of the Caribbean countries, taking home ten medals. Their medal haul included two gold, seven silver, and one bronze. With a strong contingent of fans cheering them on, Jamaica showed its class and lived up to the moniker of the sprint factory of the world. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce led her country to a sweep of the 100 meters, which included Shericka Jackson (silver) and Elaine Thompson-Herah for bronze. The three ladies

were in line for a similar result in the 200 m, but Thompson-Herah failed to medal. Favorite Jackson took gold ahead of Fraser-Pryce. Having the three fastest women in the world and sweeping the 100m, Jamaica was expected to come home with the relay gold. They were edged out by the USA with a margin of 0.04 seconds, making the result one of the biggest upset of the event. Others to have medaled for Jamaica were Britany Anderson(silver) in the 100m hurdles and Shanieka Jackson (silver) in the triple jump. The country’s male and female 400 relay teams also took home silver medals. Jamaica finished third in the medals table behind the United States and Ethiopia but placed second among all countries with 110 points. Overall, Jamaica made twenty finals and ended the championships with ten medals. We salute the efforts of all the Caribbean countries that participated in the closest world championship to their shores. Congratulations to the athletes who trained and endured to realize their dreams. The exposure and achievements will undoubtedly serve as inspiration for the future. We hope more countries will be on the podium in 2023 as the region continues to stamp its class in a sport that seems ingrained in their DNA.

UN sends aid to Haitians caught up in gang violence

Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry has called on Haitians to put aside their political differences and move toward national reconciliation to solve the socio-economic problems confronting the country.

United Nations humanitarian agencies have started delivering aid directly to people in Haiti following a recent spike in violence between rival gangs that has fueled a worsening crisis across the capital, Port-au-Prince.

In a statement following last Sunday's tragedy in which 17 Haitians lost their lives at sea and 25 others were rescued, Henry said nationals were fleeing the country to seek a better life overseas because of their failure to address the socio-economic issues. “The new tragedy saddens the entire nation. While sympathizing with the relatives of the victims, I launch, once again, an appeal for national reconciliation in order to solve the problems which are driving away, far from our soil, our brothers, our sisters, our children,” Henry said, acknowledging that “17 compatriots died off The Bahamas and several disappeared”. The Bahamas is a frequent transit route for Haitian migrants seeking to reach the United States. Dangerous sea voyages aboard overcrowded and derelict ships have become increasingly common over the past year as Haitians flee poverty and rising gang violence. The Guyana-based Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat said in a statement on Monday that it was “extremely saddened” by the incident, adding “this latest disaster brings to the fore once again the desperate situation in Haiti and the reprehensible nature of the actions of those who are taking advantage of people trying to escape. “CARICOM looks forward to the apprehension and bringing to justice of those who prey on the hopes and aspirations of vulnerable persons.” At least 17 people died, and 25 others rescued after a boat believed to be involved in a human smuggling operation, capsized just off the coast of New Providence early Sunday. The authorities believe the boat was headed for Miami in the United States. Immigration officials said survivors told them that they paid between US$3,000 and US$8,000 for the voyage.

The UN said vulnerable inhabitants of the commune of Cité Soleil, as well as those in other neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, have received items, such as hygiene and baby supplies, plastic sheeting, jerry cans for water, blankets, solar lamps, and repair items for houses from the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM). The UN said its UN Children's Fund, (UNICEF) also delivered over 300,000 liters of drinking water, enough for 20,000 people for two days. UNICEF also provided 300 hygiene kits and assisted 780 children with psychosocial support. The UN said the World Food Programme (WFP) also distributed food, including rice, beans, and oil, which can feed 15,000 for a week. According to the UN, between July 8 and 17, over 471 people were killed, injured, or unaccounted for. Serious incidents of sexual violence against women and girls, as well as boys being recruited by gangs, have also been reported. It said around 3,000 people have fled their homes, including hundreds of unaccompanied children, while at least 140 houses have been destroyed or burnt down. UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Ulrika Richardson, has called on all parties to end the deadly violence and ensure an open humanitarian corridor to Cité Soleil. She said needs there are “immense and are growing due to poverty, lack of basic services, including security, and a recent spike in violence. “The UN is committed to continuing to deliver aid to the most vulnerable children, women and men in need, in line with the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence,” Richardson said. The UN said access to healthcare is limited or non-existent with many centers closed and limited access for medical staff to the area, while food and water has been in short supply. “UN humanitarian agencies are providing immediate lifesaving assistance in Cité Soleil,” said Richardson, “but a more

Donate

sustainable and holistic approach needs to be found for the medium and longer-term development of this emblematic commune which has a strong human potential, so that unmet needs can be satisfied; this should include protection, and a return to a life of dignity for its inhabitants.” The UN said it provided direct assistance to the most vulnerable based on a coordinated joint needs assessment undertaken by IOM, UNICEF, and WFP in Cité Soleil. Additionally, the UN said it is working with Haiti's civil protection agency (DGPC), the Office for Citizen Protection (OPC), the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES) and other local and government agencies, as well as other actors, in order to provide a more comprehensive response to the vulnerable communities. Cité Soleil with an estimated population around 300,000 is one of the most deprived communes in Port-au-Prince “and its humanitarian and development needs were huge even before the current upsurge in violence,” the UN said. The humanitarian coordinator called on all parties to remain committed to end the deadly violence and ensure “an open humanitarian corridor to Cité Soleil to allow unhindered access to emergency humanitarian and medical assistance for all residents.”

Deputies in Florida fatally shoot man who grabbed rearm Deputies fatally shot a man who they say grabbed a firearm early Sunday following a chase that started when they were called to a Florida apartment complex because the man had fired shots at a rival outside a party, authorities said. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release they were called to the Tampa apartment complex because the man

had fired shots at another man over a woman at a party earlier in the night. The deputies tried to talk to the man, but he wouldn’t respond to them and led them on a short foot chase through the apartment complex. After a deputy pulled out a Taser, the man pulled a gun and pointed it at his own head. He threatened to harm himself and suggested he would be going to jail for the shooting earlier.

Onlookers urged the man to put the weapon down, and a deputy talked to the man by phone, urging him to lay down the weapon and surrender, the news release said. The man eventually put his firearm on the ground but refused to move toward deputies. He picked the firearm back up a short time later, and three deputies fired their weapons, fearing for their lives and the lives of onlookers,

the news release said. The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The three deputies will be placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.

Disagreement on LGBTQ Stance Divides Florida’s United Methodist Church More than 100 churches in Florida are attempting to leave the United Methodist Church (UMC). The congregations joined together to sue the Florida Conference in an effort to quit the Methodist organization with their church properties, without having to pay a significant departure fee. The announcement of the intent to leave was made earlier this year in May, when the conservative Methodist group, the Wesleyan Covenant Association revealed that over 100 churches representing around 20% of the member churches, were planning to leave. Conflict over United Methodist clergy marrying lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) couples and ordaining LGBTQ individuals as clergy in the church is the primary cause for the division among the organization’s members. The UMC is requiring the payment from departing members based on a trust clause adopted by the UMC and its predecessors in the 18th century, which states that all church property is held in trust for the entire denomination. The lawsuit led by chief plaintiff, Grace United Methodist Church, has been filed alleging that the Florida Conference has taken a position of entitlement to the church’s property which was owned and purchased before the UMC existed. The churches are requesting that the Court declare this trust clause “illegal on its face” or grant the congregations the right to cancel the trust so that the churches can leave with their properties. In addition, the complaint accuses Florida Conference Bishop Kenneth Carter of breaking the UMC’s Book of Discipline by failing to censure an openly homosexual bishop and a liberal reverend in St. Petersburg, Florida. As an alternative to the UMC, the departing congregations plan to affiliate with the newly launched Global Methodist Church. Following repeated postponement of a proposal to separate the denomination, the Global Methodist Church was established this year. Over 100 churches and several hundred clergy are now part of the organization.

The Adventures of Anansi and Boisie ABC Trinidad & Tobago Culture placed at the Forefront of Children’s Book Author Farrah Chow-Quan has transformed her Trinidadian roots and love for the rich culture of her childhood to create her debut Caribbean children’s book titled ‘The Adventures of Anansi and Boisie ABC’. The inspiration for the book stemmed from her upbringing in Trinidad and exposure to children’s folklore characters at an early age. Her fondest memories were attending shows at Queens Hall, starring Paul Keens-Douglas, a renowned Trinidadian pioneer and master in the art of storytelling and social commentating in the English-speaking Caribbean. After moving to the United States, ChowQuan always pursued projects that align with her Trinidadian heritage. When carnival festivities came to a screeching halt throughout the pandemic, her company Carnival Kicks (well-known designer carnival footwear brand) had to be put on hold. The lack of Caribbean representation in the children’s book aisle and her new found downtime, soon led to her fulfilling her literary dreams. Along with the collaborative efforts of Daniel Blaize, an award winning, freelance digital artist based in Trinidad and Tobago, ‘The Adventures of Anansi and Boisie ABC’ was born. A significant element of the book is the use of anthropomorphism, which is when animals are given human qualities or characteristics, a storytelling technique commonly used in Caribbean folktales. Most persons grew up hearing stories of Anansi, the mischievous spider. Chow-Quan had initially written the book with Anansi as the traditional male

When my daughter was “ born, I wanted to read to her a book about Trinidad culture and at that time there weren’t many options. I feel like I pick projects that keep me close to home, just as I did with carnival kicks. I also wanted to share with my kids who weren’t born in Trinidad some of their culture.” – Chow-Quan.

character and later decided to go in a completely different direction by introducing Anansi as a female character instead. With the rise of female empowerment and more women being recognized for their achievements; it was important for Anansi to be portrayed as a strong female lead character alongside her male counterpart, Boisie. As a nod to her appreciation for Trinbagonian culture, Chow-Quan also made a point to model all the other characters based on animals specifically indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago. Such as Heidi the Hummingbird, Boisie the Bachac, Tanty the Hawksbill Turtle (an endangered species) and Patraj the Purple Honeycreeper. There is also special emphasis

on highlighting the traditional music of the steel pan and the colloquial dialect throughout the book. “I wanted the book to be a teaching tool for my children who are not living in Trinidad, and I feel like there are other expats, like myself, who really want to impart the culture on their kids. And of course, for all the kids! I feel like over the years we’ve kind of lost the art of local storytelling and of really immersing the kids in the characters and the story, I’d love to play a role in reviving that.”

‘The Adventures of Anansi and Boisie ABC’ books are available online at www.anansiandboisie.com, Amazon and in stores at Excellent Stores, RIK, and Scribble & Quills. Persons can follow The Adventures of Anansi and Boisie on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube @anansiandboisie to learn more about her story and her fun adventures with friends.

Former Florida deputy who punched, slammed teen acquitted of battery Christopher Krickovich, a former Florida deputy was acquitted Monday of a misdemeanor battery charge related to a viral video showing a Black teen being pepper-sprayed and slammed to the ground during an arrest. A six-member Broward County jury found Christopher Krickovich not guilty after about three hours of deliberations, the Sun Sentinel reported. If convicted, Krickovich could have faced up to one year in the county jail and a $1,000 fine. A then-15-year-old student from J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs was arrested at a McDonald’s in Tamarac in 2019. Deputies had responded to a large brawl

involving roughly 200 students at the area northwest of Fort Lauderdale. Prosecutors argued that Krickovich acted illegally during the arrest, while a defense

attorney told jurors that the former deputy responded appropriately to defend himself during a mob situation and that the teen suffered no injuries. Cellphone video shows a sheriff’s sergeant pepper-sprayed the teen and threw him to the ground. Krickovich is seen jumping on the teen, twice slamming his forehead into the ground and punching him. A third deputy helps Krickovich pin the teen’s arms behind his back to be handcuffed as the video ends. The teen was initially charged with assaulting a police officer and obstruction without violence, but those charges were later dropped. A professional standards committee had recommended no discipline for Krickovich, but Sheriff Gregory Tony disagreed and fired the former deputy.

Mayor of Orlando, Buddy Dyer welcomed the expansion of the train service routes. “This new higher speed rail service will serve as an important connector between South and Central Florida as we continue to expand our transit options and work to ensure reliable transportation is available for everyone who wants to live, work or visit Orlando,” he said. Brightline intends to continue expanding. The company has already started construction for two stations: an Aventura station (between Miami and Fort Lauderdale) and a Boca Raton station (between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach). Both are expected to open in December 2022.

measures for COVID-19 which are effective in limiting the spread of Monkeypox, notably, frequent handwashing/sanitization, maskwearing and physical distancing.” The second case of the virus, follows the announcement by World Health Organization (WHO), on Saturday, of the Monkeypox outbreak being declared a global health emergency. The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases. According to the WHO’s Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, more than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries. He said the emergency committee had been unable to reach a consensus on whether the monkeypox outbreak should be classified as a global health emergency. However, he said the outbreak had spread around the world rapidly and he had decided that it was indeed of international concern. In the Caribbean – in addition to Jamaica, there have reports of Monkeypox in Bermuda, St. Lucia, The Bahamas and Barbados. Monkeypox was first discovered in central Africa in the 1950s. Health officials are recommending that people at highest risk of exposure to monkeypox – including some gay and bisexual men, as well as some healthcare workers – should be offered a vaccine. Initial symptoms typically include a high fever, swollen lymph nodes and a blistery, chickenpox-like rash or lesions – often on the mouth or genitals in recent cases. Infections are usually mild.

The Best Short Film honor was handed to filmmaker, Alex Koyode-Kay for his film on the little-known story of a young community activist, Olive Morris. The Ballad of Olive Morris is a short film that shows a true-life incident in Brixton, London in 1969. 17-year-old Olive Morris was assaulted by police officers after she tried to prevent a Nigerian diplomat from being arrested and assaulted under false pretenses by Metropolitan police officers. This film was timely as it coincided with the anniversary of Olive's death on July 12, 1979. Best Feature Film was awarded to Tony Oldham, the producer/director of Arts of Conflict – The Discourse of Notting Hill Carnival. The Notting Hill Carnival has been described as Europe's largest street festival, but in the UK, many feel it's been unfairly demonized by the media, police, politicians, and local residents. This is the story of the controversial event, from its inception in the 1950s London race riots, to its present-day. The final accolade which is given from the festival's content is the Best Film. This year the award goes to Patricia Frances for Art of Oppression. This film uses a documentary format to allow three diverse female artists to use their art to speak of marginalization and injustice. The coveted award which has become synonymous with the festival is the Paulette Wilson Justice Award. This year the recipient is Wendy Williams CBE, for all her determination to deliver a strong report on the causes of the Windrush scandal and lessons learned for the Home Office. Speaking after the awards she said, “I am both honored and privileged to accept the Paulette Wilson Justice Award, and I am particularly humbled when I think about the person in whose name the award is being given.” This award is sponsored by Integriti Capital and was launched in honor of the Windrush campaigner who sadly passed away before she could be compensated as a result of the Windrush scandal. Throughout her campaign, Paulette fought tirelessly against her own deportation to Jamaica and for all others affected by the scandal. Her efforts brought media attention to the human rights violations of those caught up in the Windrush scandal.

Reggae Boy Leon Bailey sends 'massive signal' after inspiring Villa comeback Manager Steven Gerrard hailed Reggae Boy Leon Bailey a “gamechanger” after the winger played a key role as Aston Villa rallied from two goals down at the break to force a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in a tour match on Friday. Bailey reduced the arrears soon after coming on as a second-half substitute at a rainsoaked Optus Stadium, and Calum Chambers headed a stoppage-time equalizer that cost Manchester United their 100 percent preseason record under new manager Erik ten Hag. Villa ended their own tour of Australia unbeaten. Gerrard said Bailey, who suffered an injuryhit season last time around after joining from German club Bayer Leverkusen, had sent a “massive signal” to be in the first team. “It was more than an impact. He changed the game, he showed energy, he showed speed, a hunger to cause problems and he's come back in pre-season a different player,” said the former Liverpool star. “Not just from a technical point of view – his demeanor, his body language. I think he's trusting his body more, so we need to keep him healthy. “So far, for Leon, he's sending me a massive signal that he wants to be in the 11, so he needs a strong two weeks [ahead of Villa's season

But although that hunger helped him become just the fourth West Indies batsman to score a hundred in his 100th ODI, he said on Sunday he was not as excited as he would have been if the feat did not come in a losing effort for the West Indies. “I never feel too pleased with these socalled accolades when the team doesn't get over the line,” the right-handed batsman said. Hope's 13th ODI century, and the third this year, had provided a foundation for West Indies' 311-6 off their 50 overs in their second match against India in their three-match series. However, the visitors pulled off the highest-ever run chase in this format at

Independence Gala – New Jersey opener at promoted AFC Bournemouth on August 6].” The 24-year-old Leon Bailey replaced Danny Ings at half-time and was the catalyst for turning things around for Gerrard's side. The Jamaican international scored just four minutes after the break, cutting inside Victor Lindelof, and curling a shot into the bottom corner. He later provided a cross following a corner for Chambers' equalizer. Bailey had earlier come close to forcing an equalizer, but Harry Maguire slid back to turn

away his goal-bound effort after the Jamaican had skipped past goalkeeper David de Gea. The draw in Perth kept up Villa's unbeaten run in Australia following wins over Brisbane Roar and Leeds United. London-born England winger Jadon Sancho, 22, whose parents are from Trinidad and Tobago, gave United a 25th-minute lead before a Matty Cash own goal on 42 minutes doubled the advantage, as he turned a Marcus Rashford effort beyond the reach of his own goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

Hunger for long batting periods behind Hope achievements

est Indies batsman Shai Hope says a desire to bat for extended periods is what is behind his accomplishments in One-Day International (ODI) cricket.

Queen's Park Oval and the third highest in the region with two balls to spare, taking a 20 lead and a series win. “I always try to score runs and contribute to wins and if it doesn't contribute to a win, it doesn't feel the same as a win,” Hope said in a post-match interview. He made a superb 115 off 135 balls at the top of the order, including eight fours and three sixes. By doing so, he followed in the footsteps of Gordon Greenidge against England in 1988, Chris Gayle against England in 2004, and Ramnaresh Sarwan against India in 2006 who all reached the landmark of a century in their 100th ODI. Hope has so far amassed 4,193 ODI runs at an average of 49.91. Asked what he felt was responsible for his success in this format of the game, the star

batsman said: “I would just say my desire to bat as long as I can. I love batting and I always want to stay at the crease and do whatever I can for the team's benefit. Just the desire and hunger to stay out there in the middle.” “The key is just to try to keep learning. You never know it all in anything so it's just about trying to learn and develop as best as I can while continuing to do some things that I've been doing well. It's all about adding to your game as best as you can,” Hope added, as he explained how he intended to maintain and improve his performance. Noting that India had proven “very good opposition” and their batting depth was “exceptional” in both games, Hope said coming up against that kind of opponent was good for his personal development. “I think that playing against the best in the world usually brings the best out [of me] …. It's just one of those challenges that I try to grasp with both hands and, hopefully, I can continue in that stead,” he said. Reflecting on his side's performance in Sunday's match, Hope recognized “the fight everyone has shown.” “We competed in both games. I think we just didn't grasp the key moments when we needed to. But there's always a lot that we can look back on and give the guys credit for,” he said.
