Palm Beach County Cultural Council kicks off season with Solo Exhibition

Extraordinary, imaginative multi dimensional sculptures made of colorful yarn by Delray Beach artist Michelle Drummond will soon be on display in a dramatic art exhibition in downtown Lake Worth Beach A contemporary mixed media fiber artist, Drummond's vibrant 3 D forms reflect a touch of whimsy and carry an underlying message of hope

The exhibition Michelle Drummond: Systems takes place October 14 through December 3 at the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County's Solo Gallery at its Lake Worth Beach headquarters Free and open to the public, exhibition hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5:00 p m

Working with various weights and colors of yarn to build three dimensional forms on and off the canvas and wood panel, Drummond incorporates her fiber with acrylic painted surfaces to create whimsical narratives of strength, perseverance, and optimism

Her new piece Restless (2022) is a reference to the drive to pursue the opportunities needed to achieve goals and aspirations It is a visual representation of the mind constantly churning, assessing, and questioning as well as a vision of thoughts translated into action These and other philosophical ideas are the foundation of Drummond's work in this series of Systems

“Michelle's work is very striking,” said Jessica Ransom, the council's director of artist services “Her art is effervescent, bright, and deeply thought provoking Each piece tells a story We're honored that her exhibition will be kicking off our 2022 23 season in our Solo Gallery ”

Selected through a highly competitive application process, Michelle is one of six Palm Beach County artists whose work was chosen

by a committee for one of the council's coveted Solo Gallery exhibition spots Michelle's work has previously featured in the council's 2021 Biennial exhibition and Karibu: A Celebration of Black Artists in Palm Beach County, as well as numerous other shows throughout South Florida Her work was featured in 2021 in a solo exhibition at Delray Beach's Cornell Art

Museum, and she won Best in Show at West Palm Beach's Continuum Palm Beach Art Fair in 2020

“With Systems, I'm looking forward to introducing my unique medium and technique to a broader audience and showcasing new aspects of my work,” Drummond said. “I hope to shine a light on the subject matter that inspires my work, which reflects the various systems contained within any community — subjects like accessibility of water, transportation systems and overcoming obstacles ”

The owner of Delray Beach's Drummond Fine Art gallery, Drummond was born in

Jamaica and previously worked as a project manager and mathematician — skills that she brings to her methodical approach to her art She realized from early on in her art career that manipulating multicolored fiber and incorporating acrylic paint on canvas was an avenue to help her navigate and cope in unfamiliar environments Her artwork exudes the true expression of her quest for life and the undeniable influence of her rich Jamaican culture, her experiences living in the United States and exploration of other cultures through her travels

“My use of vibrant colors reflects living life to the fullest and being happy, grateful and bringing joy to others,” Michelle Drummond said “I always strive to evoke optimism with my work ”

This past spring, Drummond's work made headlines when her large scale, hand layered fiber sculpture “The Metamorphosis” was installed outside West Palm Beach's Mandel Public Library in the building's Urban Living Room space, marking the first time a Black female artist has had a solo, permanent artwork commissioned by the City of West Palm Beach through its public art program ArtLife WPB Symbolizing life, knowledge and organic growth, the sculpture honors the library as a resource for everyone and a civic space that aims to advance society

“It is exciting to see a local artist experiment within the field of textile arts,” said Sybille Welter, administrator of public art and culture for the City of West Palm Beach “The feedback for the sculpture Ms Drummond created for the City of West Palm Beach has been phenomenal The public is in for a treat with her solo exhibition at the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County ”

The coast guard said the interdiction took place in the Mona Passage, near Puerto Rico

and the four men, who claimed to be Dominican Republic nationals are facing federal prosecution in Puerto Rico for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance aboard a vessel subject to the jurisdiction of the United States

It said this charge carries carry a minimum sentence of ten years imprisonment and a maximum sentence of imprisonment for life

An additional charge of assaulting federal officers with a deadly weapon carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, the US Coast Guard said

St. Lucia Governor General revokes appt. of Senate President Stanley Felix

St Lucia Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre says he has asked the governor general to revoke the senatorial appointment of attorney Stanley Felix, after he appeared in court on a charge of perverting the course of justice

In a brief statement, Pierre said he had been informed that Felix, the President of the Senate,” was formally charged by the police under section 376 of the Criminal Code of St Lucia

He said as head of the government he “demands the highest levels of professionalism and integrity from all public at all times

“As such, the Governor General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister and pursuant to section 27 (2) € of the Constitution of St Lucia has been advised to revoke Mr Felix's appointment and relieve him of his Senatorial duties in the Upper House of Parliament His successor will be announced at a subsequent time,” the statement from the Office of the Prime Minister stated

Felix

Stanley Felix will re appear in court on November 16 after he was granted bail for EC$15,000 (One EC dollar=US$0 37 cents)

Felix, 59, appeared before Magistrate Bertlyn Reynolds after he was arrested by police on Thursday as law enforcement officials continue their investigations into a murder

As part of the condition for bail, Felix, an

attorney, is to report to the police every first Saturday as well as surrender his travel documents

The main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) had called for the removal of Felix as president of the Senate

“In light of this astounding development and the sensitivity of the position of President of the Senate, the United Workers Party calls on Prime Minister Philip J Pierre to immediately relieve Stanley Felix of that position in light of the pending charges expected to be laid today

“The UWP, which lost the last general election July last year, said it viewed the development as “another dark day in the history of St Lucia when the country is already battered by an increase in serious crime, particularly robberies and gun related homicides

“I cannot be prouder of the Winslow Griesser crew, especially our small boat crew, whose skill and professionalism were instrumental in stopping this drug smuggling go fast vessel,” said Lieutenant Commander Mark Tatara, the commanding officer of the cutter Winslow Griesser

“We appreciate our Customs and Border Protection and our Coast Guard watch standers who worked seamlessly to ensure a successful outcome in this case that helped keep these drugs from reaching the shores of Puerto Rico,” he added

New Bermuda hotel gets first casino license

The Bermuda Gaming Commission (BGC) has granted the island's first casino license to St. Regis hotel, which opened its doors at the east end 17 months ago.

However, no date has been set for an opening of the casino with several operational steps to be completed before the dice can start rolling Casinos were approved by parliament almost nine years ago during the previous One Bermuda Alliance administration, but banks have been reluctant to support them

a casino involves a three stage process,” the BGC said in a statement It said following an extensive and in depth suitability review, the Commission has granted Bermuda's first casino license to Hotelco Bermuda Holding Ltd (operating as) St Regis Bermuda Resort

“The Commission has determined that the applicant has met the legislative suitability requirements for a license u n d e r t h e G a m i n g A c t a n d Regulations ”

The statement said the issuance of the license permits the applicant to address steps to comply with all the legislative requirements to open the casino “These are predominantly operational in nature which will include, but are not limited to, the establishment of the casino's compliance committee, the finalization of internal controls to ensure compliance with the statutory framework, the recruitment and training of employees, and the purchase, shipping, and installation of gaming equipment and systems

“The opening date of the casino is entirely dependent on the casino operator meeting all legislative requirements for the opening which will be subject to the commission's review and approval The commission continues to be ready to effect regulatory and supervisory responsibilities,” the statement added

In January, the BGC said it hoped a casino would open in June Premier David Burt said Hotelco, the developer behind the St Regis hotel in St George's parish, had submitted a formal application for a full casino license this summer

The island's oldest hotel, the Hamilton Princess, which opened in 1885, has formally served notice of its aim to have a casino

Dominica government to tighten gun legislation

The Dominica government says it is moving toward tightening legislation regarding the use of illegal weapons including a mandatory lengthy jail sentence for convicted persons

National Security and Home Affairs Minister, Rayburn Blackmoore, said the Firearm and Bail Acts will be reviewed to impose stiffer penalties on persons convicted on charges of trafficking in illegal firearms

“We have strong gun laws in our country However, laws are very organic and are meant to be changed with time In that regard, in very quick order, further changes will be made to our firearms act ”

He said anyone found importing or trafficking illegal firearms “will go to jail for a long time upon conviction

“It means therefore that there will be a

mandatory custodian jail sentence for anyone found importing or trafficking illegal firearms

That person will be out of circulation for a long time ”

Blackmoore recently said a Bail Act was enacted into law “and to bring further clarity to this piece of legislation, further strengthening to the said act will be made to ensure that bail applications can only be made before the High

Court for illegal firearm matters ”

Blackmoore said he wanted to praise the various law enforcement agencies, including customs and police, noting that as the island moves toward the upcoming festive season including the independence celebrations, “people will be more inclined to take their chances

“Dominica is not a gun town and therefore we as a people have to ensure that this beautiful country does not descend to that level Let me remind you that your government takes this matter very seriously and will not relent in its effort to build an effective infrastructure to intercept, recover illegal firearms and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said, making reference to the recent interception of 20 illegal firearms and 409 rounds of ammunition at a port on the outskirts of the capital

Opposition questions sending police ofcers to Turks and Caicos

The main opposition Free National Movement (FNM) has questioned the decision to send officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) to the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) even as Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander defended the position

Opposition Leader Michael Pintard said the government has an obligation to explain its rationale for sending the 20 officers to the British Overseas Territory that has reported an increase in criminal activities over the past few weeks

Pintard said The Bahamas has long cooperated with its neighbors in efforts geared toward mutual security, but that “Bahamian police officers being seconded to the TCI Constabulary is, however, something distinctly different

“We are sensitive of the fact that the British government is responsible for the maintenance of law and order in its territory, but it is also of

concern that we are currently going through a crime crisis in The Bahamas,” he added,

However, Fernander said the RBPF members were sent to the TCI as part of a national security exercise that will assist The Bahamas in the future

“If everyone is paying attention you could see the same trend (crime situation) occurring in Turks island We believe, based on our intel, it could be some nexus So, there is a reason for that It will assist in the long run ”

National Security Wayne Munroe also brushed aside the concerns being raised saying that people who are unaware of the purpose of the operation need not question it

“Hypothetically, let’s say they are there to capture Bahamian criminals, do they think that is something they should do?” he asked

“So, the bottom line to it is we ’ ve made the statement we have [and] we are not going to entertain responses to things that aren’t fact or

evidence based The reality is that I’ve not heard any reasoned criticism because nobody is responding to what they are there to do Unless you know what they are there to do, you are really just talking in the blind, Monroe said

The national security minister said the authorities are not divulging details of the operation, for national security reasons of the two countries

TCI Governor, Nigel John Dakin, said last week that the security situation on the island is related to Jamaican gangs and serious transnational crime rather than international terrorism

Last weekend, Kingston said while it had taken note of the recent developments in the TCI, it is disappointed that despite the fact many nationalities had been identified with the crime situation there “Jamaicans were singled out,” adding that “such statements are distinctly unhelpful”

Cry, the Beloved Country” is a famous quote by South African author Alan Paton from his book about the plight of his country during the tragic atrocities of apartheid Haitians in the diaspora must be quoting the same words as reports from Haiti worsen each day Although Haiti was experiencing serious socio economic problems before the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, since then the nation has had a slow, agonizing descent into anarchy Moïse delayed calls and protests for national elections, so when he died there wasn't a clear successor to replace him, nor a stable legislature to continue governing the country There have been two interim prime ministers since Moïse's death, but neither has been able to assert any real authority

Meanwhile, the country has been overrun by rival gangs who have blocked main roads, impeding the distribution of scarce fuel and food; terrorized citizens, preventing them from leaving their homes, and have created general disorder In addition to the roving gangs, Haitians have in recent weeks taken to the streets protesting against rising cost of fuel and foods and demanding that current interim Prime Minister Ariel Henry resign Protestors have looted food warehouses, supermarkets, banks, and other businesses Reacting to the increasing chaos and declining security conditions, Henry recently appealed to the international community for immediate deployment of a specialized armed force to restore order in Haiti The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti has also called for the establishment of an international humanitarian corridor to make it possible to transport fuel and food through the country

As news of the anarchy in Haiti escalates, a sense of apathy from the international community has been concerning As one writer wrote on

Instagram, “It seems the rest of the world is waiting for Haiti to completely eradicate itself ”

Time and time again in the past, the international community has risen to assist Haiti when it was impacted either by natural disasters, or social and political upheaval But most of these interventions ended up criticized by the Haitian people A UN task force present in Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake was criticized of rape, impregnating, and discarding women, and being the source of a cholera epidemic Other international groups that assisted the country in the wake of the earthquake were accused of stealing funds meant for the country's redevelopment And US armed forces sent to Haiti to stabilize the country after former President Jean Bertrand Aristide was forced into exile was also not very welcomed

So, there may be wariness amongst the international community to collaborate in intervening directly into the current Haitian situation As happened before, Haitians crying for international intervention, could eventually turn against an international coalition But what are the alternatives?

Haitian security forces seem clearly overwhelmed by the roaming gangs, while citizens are being kidnapped, slain, and injured wantonly

Citizens are also starving, prohibited from access to vitally needed fuel as roads are blocked Definitely, Haiti is fast becoming a failed state, a breeding ground for criminals and lawlessness The international community has a responsibility to at least attempt to correct the situation

Haiti is a member of the Caribbean Community, CARICOM, and some critics are asking why CARICOM isn't doing more to help Haiti But, seriously, what can CARICOM do to alleviate the situation in Haiti? Most Caribbean leaders have expressed concern about the declining Haitian situation and have tabled interest in helping But how can CARICOM get past the lawlessness that is consuming Haiti?

On the other hand, since Haiti is a member of CARICOM, any planned international intervention must involve the participation and agreement of CARICOM to the terms of deployment of such intervention CARICOM must insist attempts to curtail the roaming gangs are done without collateral damage to other Haitians CARICOM should also utilize whatever influence it has with Haitian authorities to encourage the holding of long delayed presidential and legislative elections, which should be held and monitored during the presence of the international observers And, again, the international community, including CARICOM, will need to remain in Haiti to assist in rebuilding a functioning and effective security force

Yes, this seems like déjà vu One cannot fault the international community for saying, “We've been there, done that ” That's understood But in the past, Haiti had some semblance of a governing authority to run the country This time, lawless gangs are quickly filling the void left by a disappearing and ineffective government Haiti needs help to restore normalcy, eradicate the gangs, restore a government But, most of all Haiti needs humanitarian help which must come from the international community

Johnson Smith disappointed that TCI links upsurge in crime to Jamaicans

The Jamaica government says it has noted with “concern” recent developments in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) related to an upsurge in gang activity in the British Overseas Territory

But Kingston said it is disappointed that despite the fact many nationalities had been identified with the crime situation there “Jamaicans were singled out,” adding that “such statements are distinctly unhelpful ”

Governor Nigel John Dakin Monday said the security situation in the TCI is related to Jamaican gangs and serious transnational crime rather than international terrorism

“It remains ongoing, and it will not stop, unless we stop it,” Dakin told the House of Assembly as he made reference to the surge in gang violence

The governor said several months ago two local gangs lost their leadership He said one extremely violent local gang leader was shot dead by police, while resisting arrest

“The other, a Haitian gang leader, who the police had made four separate attempts to arrest in the shanty areas of 'Romy Yard,' was killed, by one of his own gang before he could be arrested ”

The governor said the vacuum and confusion this created, allowed a predominantly Jamaican gang with a relatively small footprint to reinforce from Jamaica

But in a statement, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith said it's “regrettable” and “unhelpful”

Ja a ca s e at o to a upsu ge ga g activity there

“Crime in our Caribbean societies affects us all and it is therefore our hope that there will be a speedy resolution to the current upsurge We assure our nationals in the Turks and Caicos Islands of our concern and interest in the situation and urge them to remain clam while they continue to exercise their usual responsible citizenship

n the country,” Johnson Smith said

“We also assure them we have communicated their concerns to the government of the TCI and are assured of heir recognition of the value of our many aw abiding citizens who contribute positively to their society,” she added Johnson Smith noted that Jamaica and he TCI have been engaged at various levels, and that Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Premier Charles Misick have held discussions on the ongoing situation, including on the multi national nature of gang fueled violence, which also affects Jamaica

She further explained that Jamaica and other CARICOM members were asked to provide assistance and are examining ways in which to do so

Frontier Airlines to begin seasonal nonstop flights from US Cities to Jamaica

Frontier Airlines will begin non stop seasonal flights from the United States cities of Denver, Colorado; St. Louis, Missouri, and Chicago, Illinois to the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica as of February 2023

The announcement was made by senior manager of International Sales at Frontier, William Evans, who says flights will begin on February 23, from St Louis and three times per week; the service from Denver, which begins on February 24, will also be three times weekly; and weekly flights from Chicago begin on February 25

“We are really excited to make this announcement I just want to say thank you to the deputy mayor [Councilor Richard Vernon], to the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), and the Port Authority,” he said during a special ceremony held at Sangster International

“Everyone has welcomed us with open arms The love that you give us, is true ' one love Jamaica' and I know that's how we feel, and I know that everyone at headquarters in Denver is very excited, and we look forward to just huge growth and opportunity well into the future ”

Councilor Vernon said Frontier has played a key role in the record arrivals of visitors to the island since the reopening of the tourism sector, which was severely impacted by the COVID 19 pandemic

“We are grateful that you have chosen Montego Bay, and I welcome you again I want to say that Montego Bay is at a place where it is expanding, and we value our transportation sector, especially when we are talking about the flights and Montego Bay becoming a hub We really want to reach that place That is why our team has worked so hard to extend its footprints across the world,” he added

For her part, regional manager at the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), Odette Dyer, said the development is exciting and is “ a plus for destination Jamaica” and “ augurs very well for the island ”

Florida Democrat, Val Demings, has introduced the Haiti Criminal Collusion Transparency Act of 2022 to the House of Representatives which will require the US Department of State to investigate the nature of the relationship between criminal gangs and political and economic elites in Haiti, and to submit an annual report on the topic to Congress

“Governments must protect their citizens I’m fighting for a Haiti free from fear and gang violence, where the Haitian people have the safety and freedom to build their own future,” said Demings

“This new legislation will help us identify bad actors behind Haiti’s lawlessness and hold them accountable

After the brazen assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, killings and kidnappings have soared, with the backing of Haitian political and economic elites,” she said, adding that the United States must take concrete steps to hold these “criminals accountable and help the Haitian people achieve stability, freedom, human rights, and democracy”

Demings said the legislation follows successful models used to investigate corruption in Russia and other nations and to lay the groundwork for U S sanctions and cooperative international crackdowns

Demings co chairs the House Haiti Caucus, which she helped to form in 2021

Over the past year, the Caucus has closely monitored efforts to restore democracy in Haiti, worked to ensure the safety of kidnapped missionaries and led efforts to send COVID 19 vaccines to Haiti

Following the assassination of Moïse in July last year, Demings has led calls for stability, security, and democracy, including a transparent, independent investigation into the assassination She has also pushed the Biden Harris administration to withdraw support for de facto ruler Ariel Henry

The Haitian government has denied rumors that Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned and that the Ministry of Defense has entered into a pact with gangs as the situation in the country worsens.

“The Office of Communication formally and categorically denies the information conveyed on social networks. These are purely and simply strategies of fabrications, intoxication, orchestrated by ill intentioned individuals, aimed at sowing trouble and confusion,” the government said

Further, the Communication Office of the Ministry of Defense “formally denies the false allegations” being circulated on social media that the Ministry of Defense had entered into a pact with gang leaders

“Attached to the principles of ethics of republican values, the Ministry of Defense has never, nor never intends to make a pact with outlaw individuals and groups who,

UN Secretary General urges deployment of international specialized armed force in Haiti

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres is urging the international community, including the UN Security Council, to consider “ as of matter of urgency” the request by the Haitian government for the immediate deployment of an international specialized armed force in Haiti

Guterres said, through spokesman Stephane Dujarric, that the force would address the humanitarian crisis, including securing the free movement of water, fuel, food, and medical supplies from main ports and airports to communities and health care facilities

The secretary general on Sunday submitted to the Security Council a letter with options for enhanced security support to Haiti, as requested by the Council in its resolution 2645 (2022)

He called on Haitian stakeholders to “rise above their differences and to engage, without

further delay, in a peaceful and inclusive dialogue on a constructive way forward

“The United Nations stands by the people of Haiti, and will support efforts to build consensus, reduce violence and promote stability in the country,” Dujarric quoted Guterres as saying

Guterres said he “remains gravely concerned about the situation in Haiti,” which is facing an outbreak of cholera amid a dramatic deterioration in security that has paralyzed the country

The UN said the blockage of the Varreux fuel terminal has brought critical services required to prevent the rapid spread of the disease to a stand still, including the distribution of potable water

“Again, the most vulnerable sectors of the Haitian population are those hit the hardest,” Dujarric said, adding “the priority must be to save lives ”

Over the last weekend, the United States said it was “closely following the worsening health and security situation in Haiti, particularly the ongoing actions by criminal actors that impede urgent measures to address the threat posed by the spread of cholera to the Haitian population ”

In that context, Ned Price, spokesman for the US Department of State, said the Biden administration will review the Government of Haiti's request in coordination with international partners “and determine how we can increase our support to help address Haiti's fuel shortage and security constraints, which are disrupting the flow of humanitarian assistance and support for lifesaving measures aimed at halting the spread of cholera”

Blame: Kalonji’s Ode to Bridget James

It’s never easy losing someone to gun violence Having to witness such a gruesome act and being blamed for it is indescribable and that’s how Trinidad dancehall artiste Kalonji feels

Having witnessed the death of his 25 year old girlfriend Bridget James the artiste has written a touching song about the heart wrenching experience

Bridget was gunned down in the car park of The Brix Autograph Collection on September 2, one day after her birthday

The artiste who is best known for his gun slinging hits received backlash from thousands of social media users for what they described as a lack of empathy and self promotion following the murder of his girlfriend

At the time of the incident, Bridget an accomplished auditor was sitting in the front seat of a car driven by Kalonji The artiste was

believed to be the intended target Although he escaped with non life threatening injuries, he was shot multiple times and underwent surgery In addition, he was unable to attend her funeral

In viral posts on Facebook and Instagram, Kalonji sought to thank God for his life and mental state and offered condolences and apologies to the family of his late partner For his fans liking, this was seen as insensitive and received a tongue lashing over the post

In addition, there was an article in the Trinidad and Tobago Express which quoted Bridget’s dad Patrick James who said, “Had I known, I would have put a stop to it” He was speaking about her relationship, acknowledging that his daughter kept it secret

Nonetheless, Kalonji has released the song Blame to his YouTube account in which he vented about this immense loss, taking his fans

Charges dropped against former Trinidad AG Anand Ramlogan

Trinidad's Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, SC, Monday announced that he was discounting the case against former attorney general, Anand Ramlogan and former opposition legislator and attorney, Gerald Ramdeen, because the state's main witness has indicated he is not willing to give evidence until a civil claim against the state is concluded Gaspard told Chief Magistrate Maria Busby Earle Caddle, that the state's main witness, Jamaica born British King's Counsel, Vincent Nelson, had indicated that while he is willing to give evidence, he was not willing to do so until a civil claim case against the state is concluded

In that matter, Nelson is seeking damages for breach of indemnity between himself and the former attorney general Faris Al Rawi Nelson alleges the indemnity was promised to him Gaspard said it would not be fair to have the duo “in limbo” while Nelson is pursuing his litigation adding that the charges may be reinstated once it is completed The Chief Magistrate then discharged the duo In 2019, Ramdeen and Ramlogan were charged with conspir-

ing with Nelson for Ramlogan to misuse public office, by accepting money from Nelson as a reward for giving him state briefs

The state had also alleged that the men conspired for Ramdeen to receive, conceal, and transfer criminal property, which represented corrupt rewards Nelson gave him for the state briefs

The third allegation against the two was that they conspired for Nelson to give ten percent of the legal fees to Ramlogan as a “gift” or “reward” for being granted state briefs

In March 2020, Nelson, who pleaded guilty in June 2019 for his part in the alleged kickback scheme, was ordered to pay TT$2 25 million (One TT dollar US$0 16 cents) in restitution as part of a plea bargain arrangement with the State As part of the deal, he agreed to turn state witness and testify against Ramlogan and Ramdeen

Under his plea agreement, the conspiracy to commit misbehavior in public office charge was dropped against Nelson and the judge, Justice Malcolm Holdip said Nelson was free to return to the United Kingdom while he cleared the fines under a ten month court approved payment plan

through terrorist acts, paralyze the proper functioning of the country,” the ministry said

The announcement by the government comes as Haiti has formally requested the help of international troops as gangs and protesters paralyze the country and supplies of water, fuel and basic goods dwindle

A document published on Friday and signed by Prime Minister Ariel Henry and 18 top ranking officials, states that they are alarmed by “the risk of a major humanitarian crisis” that is threatening the lives of many people

It authorizes Prime Minister Henry to request from international partners “the immediate deployment of a specialized armed force, in sufficient quantity,” to stop the crisis across the country caused partly by the “criminal actions of armed gangs

“It is imperative to restart activities to avoid a complete asphyxiation of the national economy,” according to the document, even as it remains unclear if the request had been formally submitted and to whom

On Friday, the U S Embassy warned that “U S citizens should depart Haiti now in light of the current health and security situation and infrastructure challenges ” It also authorized the temporary departure of government personnel and their families

“We strongly condemn those who continue to block the distribution of fuel and other necessities to Haitian businesses,” U S State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said, adding that Washington is considering a request for a humanitarian corridor to restore the distribution of fuel within Haiti and coordinating with Prime Minister Henry and other international partners to determine how best to provide additional support

But Patel would not disclose where the troops to enforce the corridor might come from, saying that consideration was still in an early stage

Protesters and increasingly powerful gangs have helped plunge Haiti into an unprecedented level of chaos, with the country paralyzed for nearly a month after gangs surrounded a large fuel terminal in the capital of Port au Prince, refusing to budge until Prime Minister Henry steps down

As a result, crews have been unable to distribute about ten million gallons of diesel and gasoline and more than 800,000 gallons of kerosene stored on site

She added that the announcement coincides with the selection of an advisory board of community leaders, who will set in motion ground breaking policy development and select an executive director and assistant director in the coming months

In addition, Hochul said on arrival,

Jamaican cuisine stands side by side with the nation's other cultural pillars, such as reggae, dancehall, and athletics. When it comes to Jamaican food, of course, jerk is king. And, when it comes to the celebration of all things jerk, the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival tops the list. This year's festival, which will be held Sunday, November 13 in Miramar, Florida, will commemorate the event's 20th anniversary. To honor that milestone, here are 20 facts about the most robust jerk celebration in the USA, the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival.

According to the festival's team, jerk as a stand alone term, can refer to either how meat is prepared, or the specific seasoning blend used on the meat

A traditional jerk seasoning blend consists of scotch bonnet peppers, scallions, pimento (allspice), ginger, thyme, and cinnamon.

As of 2022, there are three festivals held under the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival Banner – The Miramar festival in South Florida, the festival in Washington D C , and one in Queens, New York

By far, the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival is the biggest Jamaican food festival on US shores

Despite celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival began in 2001, but two years were lost to the novel COVID 19 pandemic

The festival started with only seven food vendors and 4000 attendees, but in its peak years, it hit 35 vendors and 25,000 attendees

The base team is only five people deep, including: Abdul Muhsin, chairman of the board and technical director; Bridget Provost Edwards, cultural artistic director; June Minto, culinary creative director; Richard Elcock, operations director; C “Eddy” Edwards, CEO, sales marketing director

Jerk cooking is the greatest fusion of native Taino culture with African preparation styles Indigenous Tainos taught the Jamaican maroons how to preserve meat with the available spices on the island The festival celebrates this rich cultural heritage of jerk

As festival organizers put it, the method of preparing jerk was born out of necessity Jerked meats were once cooked underground or in holes to hide the smoke produced, allowing the maroons to prepare meals without raising the

Due to its blend of seasoning and method of preparation, jerked meats have a long shelf life, which made it perfect for those on the run from the English, back in the day

Every year, the event's title sponsor, Grace Foods, sells almost three million jars of jerk seasoning globally Grace is Jamaica's largest manufacturer and exporter of Jamaican food products

The Blue Glaze Mento band was one of the first musical acts to perform at the festival According to the festival team, food and music are inseparable in Jamaican culture, so even though it's a food festival first, music will always be included

A who's who of musical acts has graced the festival's stage over the years, including Shaggy, Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, Yellow Man, Sizzla, Capleton, and Shenseea Performing this year are Tarrus Riley, Christopher Martin, and Romain Virgo together tune fi tune, Baby Cham, and his all female band, plus the sizzling sounds of DJ Richie D, Supa Twitch and House Arrest with a tribute to 90s Dancehall There will be a few surprise appearances, as well

The festival's team notes that it's not authentic jerk, and won't have the real, full jerk flavor, unless it's done over pimento wood

Legendary cultural icons will make their way to this year's staging of the festival, including thespian and entertainer Oliver Samuels, and legendary playwright and actor Owen “Blakka” Ellis

Whole chicken and pork are the conventional offerings at most jerk stops, but this festival is not your typical stop Jerked fish, lobster, tacos, corn, and even soup are offered regularly Recently, vegan options have also been added to the festival

This may blow your mind, but apparently Jerk Ice Cream was invented for the festival and has been a hit ever since it made its debut

At the Culinary Pavilion chefs are each given a mystery basket and are made to prepare a jerk dish from surprise ingredients It's one of the highlights of the show

The festival is exploring innovative technology in the form of a Jerk Festival App and NFTs

Experience for yourself the greatest celebration of Jamaican cuisine in North America This year's Florida edition is going to pull out all the stops for the festival's 20th anniversary There will be more vendors, more capacity, and some of the best musical acts

immigrants often struggle to learn English, help their children to assimilate in school, find safe and affordable housing, secure jobs with a livable wage, secure transportation to commute and access available service

She noted that the institute’s executive director and assistant director will analyze real time immigration, economic, labour, and other data, and identify potential solutions for policymakers to help build on the state’s commitment to supporting immigrants of all ages, nationalities, and backgrounds

In October 2021, the governor signed legislation classifying certain threats to report a person ’ s immigration status as extortion or coercion under New York law

She indicated that the advisory board will provide the institute with guidance and recommendations with respect to research, programming, fundraising opportunities, and community events

Meanwhile, NYC Mayor, Eric Adams, last Friday issued Emergency Executive Order 224, formally directing all relevant city agencies to coordinate their efforts to support hundreds of asylum seekers, arriving in the city each day from Texas and other border states

Adams also called for emergency federal and state aid to manage the continued influx of asylum seekers, as the city projects costs of more than one billion US dollars related to asylum seekers in the 2022 fiscal year, as well as expedited work permits, a national decompression strategy and a resettlement strategy

Shocked!

In addition, the advisory stated that US government personnel are prohibited from traveling to several areas including all beaches, claiming that violent crimes, such as murder, robbery, assault, sexual assault, home invasion, and kidnapping are common

In addition, it said gang activity, such as narcotics trafficking, is common, with a sizable portion of violent crime being gang related

“Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas,” the advisory said

But National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, said Trinidad and Tobago has not had any major terrorist activity for many years, perhaps not since 1990

“We have had little bombings about the place, unfortunately, someone lost a leg and we haven't had that experience and thank God, I was a little bit taken aback,” he said

He added that the government continues to work alongside the United States and other friendly governments in dealing with crime and that terrorism, which is not unique to Trinidad and Tobago

“We continue to do our work, we continue to collaborate with our friends, the United States of America and other international partners and other international agencies and it is a work in progress ,” he said

“But yes, I was a little bit taken aback with this major focus on terrorism bearing in mind that terrorism is an opportunist activity and wherever they get an opportunity to do something they do it anywhere in the world, and, in that sense, Trinidad and Tobago is not as

vulnerable as every other country anywhere in this world,” he added

As for Jamaica, the US government issued a level three travel advisory, urging US citizens to avoid travelling there due to the island's elevated level of crime

Months after it issued a travel advisory warning Americans to reconsider travel to Jamaica, the U S Department of State last week outlined a list of places to avoid in the country

Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common in Jamaica, according to the US State Department

“Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all inclusive resorts Local police lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents Emergency services vary throughout the island, and response times may vary from US standards,” the State Department said

It further said the homicide rate has been among the highest in the western hemisphere As a result, US government personnel are restricted from travelling to the areas listed

Despite frequent appearances on the travel advisory list Jamaica continues to welcome millions of visitors annually a significant percentage of which is from North America Jamaica has earned US$5.7 billion since reopening its borders in June 2020, Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett has announced. The data also show that the island welcomed over five million visitors over the same period The announcement follows the destination's strong tourism recovery efforts that resulted in its best summer ever according to arrivals figures

The US Department of State has issued travel advisories for more than 100 countries in the last week

UAE, Netherlands fixtures key to final prep, says Phil Simmons

Adrian Mariappa leaves Australia to join Burton

Reggae Boy Adrian Mariappa has left Down Under to join English League One struggler Burton Albion on a short-term deal.

The 36 year old Jamaica defender, who has previously played in the English Premier League, returns to the UK after leaving Australian club Macarthur, where he made 19 A League appearances

London born Mariappa, who made his debut for the Reggae Boyz in 2012, moved abroad in December 2021 after ending a short spell with Bristol City, where he played 27 games

The Caribbean side was scheduled to face minnows United Arab Emirates on Monday at Junction Oval before taking on the Netherlands at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. (4:00 am EST)

“The two warm up games are about getting things to work together, about getting the plans we have in place, about making sure players are getting sharper and sharper as they go along,” Simmons said

He added: “The mood in the camp has been very good We played two games and we lost the two games but at the same time, some of the things we 're trying to put in place are starting to come in place and the mood in the camp has been excellent ” West Indies are coming off the back

of a clean sweep to world champions Australia in a two match series last week, losing by three wickets in Gold Coast and 31 runs in Brisbane

The series loss was their third in a row following similar results against New Zealand and India in the Caribbean, and they have now won only two of their last 10 T20 Internationals

Not for the first time, the West Indies batting underwent severe testing and was found wanting, but Simmons said work is ongoing in this aspect

“The batsmen understand what we need to add to get to where we want to

be and they've been working hard,” he explained

“We had a good net session with everyone, and everyone is looking forward to playing in the practice games, getting in the middle, and doing what is necessary for the team

“So far, the enthusiasm and excitement are there in all the players so that's good to see ”

Following the warm ups, West Indies will take on Scotland, Ireland, and Zimbabwe in Group B of a tricky qualifying series, with the top two teams from Group A and B advancing to the main draw

Reggae Boy Michail Antonio wraps up Hammers win

“He brings a lot of good experience,” said Burton boss Dino Maamria “He's a good talker on the field and he adds another option for us ”

Added Mariappa: “I'm looking forward to getting started and to helping the team push up the table ”

Estwick says T20 World Cup squad still needs work

Despite West Indies’ win in their first warm up match ahead of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup which begins in just under a week, assistant and bowling coach Roddy Estwick says the squad still has some work to do

West Indies registered a comfortable 17 run win over minnows United Arab Emirates at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Monday

“Any game that you go into you want to win and you want to try and plan properly and execute those plans properly. There are still one or two areas that we need to work on,” said Estwick after the game

“We lost some early wickets; we didn’t assess the conditions as you would like ”

Reggae Boy Michail Antonio, now playing second fiddle to a 23 year old six foot, five inch Italian striker, sealed all three points with an injury time goal as West Ham United came from behind to defeat Fulham 3 1 in the English Premier League on Sunday.

The 32 year old Antonio, who came on as an 80th minute substitute, cashed in on a comedy of errors in the 91st minute at London Stadium

After his initial shot was saved by Bernd Leno, the German goalkeeper and Tim Ream got in each other's way trying to clear, inadvertently presenting the striker with an open goal

Antonio had replaced Gianluca Scamacca, who scored for a third successive game in the 62nd minute with a chip after a hint of handball

Having had to bide his time following his £32 million (US$35 4 million) move from Sassuolo in the summer, Scamacca has now taken his Hammers' tally to six goals in

Fulham, who were forced to use Reggae Boy forward Bobby Reid as a makeshift defender, led after six minutes as Andreas Pereira rifled home from a tight angle

However, Pereira then fouled Craig Dawson from a corner and Jarrod Bowen scored the penalty

Antonio, who this season lost his place in the Hammers XI to Scamacca, showed he had a point to prove, bustling through and driving into the empty net to seal the win after entering the contest late

In the fifth tier National League on Saturday, 27 year old Jamaican striker Junior Morias notched his fifth goal in six games – and sixth in all for the campaign – but Dagenham & Redbridge had to settle for a point in a 1 1 home draw against Southend United Substitute Callum Powell's 79th minute equalizer earned Southend the point after the Daggers led in the 19th minute through Morias, whose right footed shot beat on loan Stoke goalkeeper Blondy Nna Noukeu Morias later went off, but the extent of the Kingston born striker's injury was not immediately known

However, Estwick acknowledged the polished half century from Brandon King and an incisive spell of bowling from Raymon Reifer that handed the two time World Cup champions the warm up win

The stylish King led the batting with 64 off 45 balls with seven fours and two sixes, helping West Indies to post 152 for nine from their 20 overs after they were sent in

“He continues to improve and that’s a good thing He has an appetite for big runs We’re looking at phases for each batsman and when you look at Brandon’s phases, it goes from first over down to 20, so you know that he’s very, very capable of making big scores,” Estwick said of King who went in at number three

“ He looks in good touch and hopefully he’ll continue right throughout the series ”

Reifer was introduced into the bowling attack when left hander Yannic Cariah was struck on the right hand by a rising delivery and retired from the game
