In August, Jamaican entrepreneur, Ingrid Murray, made the coveted Inc 5000 list for her powerhouse, New York based business, Prospect Cleaning Service

Each year Inc magazine, a highly revered, long standing US-based business publication, releases a list of the 5000 fastest growing, private companies in the United States This year Prospect Cleaning Service came in close to the top of the list at number 1001, with a noteworthy business growth rate of 651% over the past three years

Prospect Cleaning Service is a city and state certified, minority woman owned business that provides building and maintenance services to the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas With Murray at the helm as CEO, during the pandemic the company landed several multi million dollar contracts, including one with the Metro Transport Authority (MTA) The Jamaican led team was commissioned to clean massive subway stations across New York, as well as the Grand Central Terminalthe largest train station in America

Starting a cleaning service is not an unusual choice for Jamaicans who have migrated to the US, but Murray has broken through many glass ceilings and surpassed the scope of possibilities for minorities in the industry “I call myself Jamaican born, American made and globally exported It means I've expanded my talents outside the island, and I've been able to touch lives near and far,” Murray explains, admitting that she could never have envisioned the level of success she has achieved

Still, the road has been a rocky one Murray grew up humbly between the Duhaney Park and Hellshire communities in Jamaica While there, her highest paying job was group accountant at United General When her boss refused to give her time off to spend with her mother who was visiting from the US after over a decade of being away, Murray resigned “When my mom left and I realized I was jobless, I decided to run taxi with the Nissan Sunny I had just bought I became the

first and only woman taxi driver in Naggo Head,” she laughs at the memory, noting that there have been many other women taxi drivers since Murray first ventured to the US almost two decades ago to find her teenage daughter who had been kidnapped by her stepmother That story is a long one, but in the end, she found her daughter and spent many years living and working between Jamaica and the US so she could care for her daughter and other two children back home

At the beginning, Murray took on many less

than desirable jobs to survive Her first was a lucky break with a double edged sword She started in sales for a contractor, and landed $25,000 in commission the first week However, the owner didn't intend to pay her After an arduous fight, Murray finally received her due Next was a series of bartending jobs, which was an odd fit for Murray - a non drinking or smoking, Christian who didn't know the first thing about alcoholic beverages “I went home and looked up how to mix drinks on my computer I had to write it all down on the inside of my arms, ” she laughs Her seemingly natural sales and people skills made the job a lucrative one

Soon, Murray would meet her husband, Courtney Murray, and bring her children to

New York to live with her before the couple had their last child

Prospect Cleaning Service was originally her husband's business, under another name When Murray got involved, it was a much smaller operation that focused mostly on carpet cleaning, making less than $70,000 per year Murray poured into the business by giving her husband ideas, helping him with rebranding, building a website and assisting with marketing In 2012, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and by 2014 he officially handed over the business to Murray, trusting her abilities to keep things afloat

However, Murray did more than just keep things afloat Within the first year, she formalized operations, bumped up marketing and doubled the annual revenue Even though there were difficult years and she couldn't seem to hit her goal of a million dollars, Murray grew the business exponentially Within that period she had also managed to secure a bachelor's degree in business administration and start her master's degree, as well

Everything was on an upward, even if bumpy, trajectory, until the pandemic hit in 2020 That March, Prospect Cleaning lost 90% of its clients Murray was down and depressed, crying uncontrollably one day when she had an interview for a full time job The situation was dire, and finding a job seemed to be the only solution The idea devastated Murray so much that she ended up missing the interview It was that day she received the call from MTA, which would end up being a multi million dollar contract. She didn't have the capital to buy the equipment and supplies needed to do that caliber of job, so she borrowed it from her father In one day, everything had changed Murray and her team spent the entire pandemic working tirelessly By 2022, she found herself ill, suffering from burnout Her husband had also been diagnosed with stage four brain cancer Even though she has been forced to slow down to take care of him and herself, Prospect Cleaning is still ticking, with several major government and private sector

A member of the recently established Commission on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation has warned that the legalization of marijuana will not happen overnight and in the interim is recommending that persons 25 years and under who were charged, convicted, and or imprisoned for simple cannabis possession be pardoned by the governor general

“This thing is not going to happen overnight, it is going to take time,” said attorney Anselm Clouden, who represents the Ministry of Legal Affairs on the Commission

He told reporters “For example, we have laws on the book that prohibits possession of any quantity from one marijuana cigarette joint to how much for possession of trafficking ”

Clouden is of the opinion that while the laws relating to cannabis are under review the government should clean the records of those who have this criminal conviction against their names

“There is a need to signal to the public and I will show advice that persons, young persons 25 and under that were charged, some imprisoned or convicted, that a pardon could be given to them now,” he said

The prominent criminal lawyer said those people under the age of 25 are in a special group because they will want to pursue studies overseas, become more viable on the job market, and travel to foreign universities as well as need a visa to travel to either reside or be reunited with relatives

“Having that stain on your record, especially young people inhibit or sometimes creates denial on such applications it does say what quantity you have it just says that you were found guilty of being in possession of a controlled drug,” he said

He is therefore advocating for those who were convicted for simple possession to receive a pardon from the governor general as allowed under Section 72 of the Constitution Act which focuses on the Prerogative of Mercy

Former deputy speaker Neil Rowe released on bail

Former deputy speaker of the Barbados Parliament, and government legislator, Neil Rowe, will re appear in a magistrate's court January 30 next year, after he appeared in court Monday on a charge of rape

Rowe was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge when he appeared before Magistrate Deidre McKenna, in the Oistins Magistrate's Court

Rowe, who allegedly committed the offence on September 18, was granted BDS$10,000 (One BDS$=US$0 50 cents) bail after the prosecution raised no objection

King's Counsel Roger Forde, one of two layers representing Rowe, told reporters after the court hearing that he had serious concerns about information regarding the case which had been placed in the public domain via social media

He said such leaking of information, some allegedly from the contents of a police station diary, could prejudice the position of any female in Barbados who wanted to make reports

to the Barbados Police Service

“It's not fair to women in Barbados,” Forde told the court

Prime Minister Mia Mottley says she has “ every confidence in the independence and the integrity of the Barbados Police Force,” after the member of the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) was detained by police over the weekend

“It is not our place to intervene in the process of justice, but rather to secure the integrity of the critical institutions that preserve the rights of the individual in this country And to ensure law, order, and indeed good governance in Barbados ”

Mottley said the situation is not easy for the persons involved, saying “but as a responsible political party, we must acknowledge the rights of each of them

Earlier, Mottley had indicated that the Member of Parliament for St Thomas, Cynthia Forde, will be nominated for the position of deputy speaker in the House of Assembly on Tuesday, replacing Rowe

Belize Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow confident of defeating moves to oust him

Belize Opposition Leader, Shyne Barrow, says he is confident of withstanding efforts to oust him as leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and is also pointing an accusing finger at some “forces” within the ruling People's United Party (PUP)

Last weekend, a group of disgruntled UDP members, including the party's vice

chairman, Alberto August, announced plans for a recall convention to discuss the removal of Barrow, who became leader in March this year at a leadership convention, amassing 256 votes against 253 for his closest rival, Tracy Panton August has presented documents containing the signatures of party members urging the recall convention

and party officials said the petitions will be vetted before a decision is announced on the way forward regarding the fate of the convention

“When this recall is triggered, we are hoping that nothing gets nasty The UDP has gone through enough and so we will be meeting privately with the delegates and seeking to campaign with them That's about it,” said August

Asked to explain what has brought about the need to recall Barrow, the UDP vice chairman said “ we don't want to go

It's time to develop the promised Jamaican sports industry

It was a welcoming sight, even for Jamaicans who are not sport fans, to see Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, the incomparable Jamaican sprint champion, and quarter miler turn sprinter - Sherika Jackson, among those honored by the Jamaican government at the nation's National Heroes Day award ceremony on October 17 Fraser-Pryce and Jackson now join other outstanding Jamaican athletes including Merlene Ottey, Usain Bolt, Veronica Campbell, Asafa Powell and Elaine Thompson Herah who were awarded national honors for their accomplishment in track and field sports

It's commendable to see respective Jamaican governments bestowing national honors on its sports men and women, and the presentation of these awards are special moments of pride for the athletes But, these athletes, most of whom through tremendous self sacrifice, perform at high levels on the international stage, branding Jamaica positively to the rest of the world, need more fundamental recognition long after the fanfare of the awards ceremony

Granted, the situation for Jamaican sportsmen and women, particularly track and field athletes is much better today, than say back in the in the late 20th century Annual international meets like the Diamond League series afford athletes the potential to earn decent incomes by competing in a race or field event Athletes also have the potential for a fairly good pay day by making it to the finals at events at the biennial World Track and Field Championships Outstanding athletes like Bolt, Fraser Pryce, and Thompson Herah are also likely to gain very financially attractive endorsements from commercial companies to market their specific brands

But most of the athletes don't receive endorsements, nor make enough income by appearing on the international track and field circuit. After the spotlight dims on their glorious performance at international events like the Olympics and World Championships they return

Having now gained the reputation as the world's “sprint factory”, Jamaica has the potential for being the training center for international athletes seeking to shine in sprint events at international meets. Jamaica has excellent track and field trainers, coaches, and training facilities to offer to ambitious international track and field athletes. Moreover, there are sports fields like the international cricket stadium in the parish of Trelawny which could be converted into additional track and field sporting facilities.

home and get lost in the struggle to make ends meet It becomes worse when the athlete ages and loses their competitive edge Most are not even remembered by the rest of the society

In recent years there has been a prevailing trend where the majority of Jamaican sports men and women, including footballers, cricketers, netballers and track and field athletes, emerge on the national stage from humble, often low income homes in rural Jamaica or inner city communities Some are fortunate to obtain sports related scholarships to foreign universities/colleges enabling them to pursue courses of studies to secure future careers But there are still too many former sports men and women who

are lumped into the “strugglers” category after highlighting the Jamaican colors, and the Jamaican national anthem at international events

A few years ago, the Jamaican minister responsible for sports, spoke ambitiously of plans for the government to create a thriving, financially rewarding Jamaican sports industry Unfortunately, the nation still awaits details of such a planned industry, and the ensuing implementation

If such an industry is well planned, coordinated, and implemented it could be useful to utilize the talent of the nation sportsmen and women when they have passed their competitive prime

While some former athletes could be recruited as coaches and/or trainers at these training facilities, others who may not be able or capable of providing these services could still benefit indirectly from the income generated

It would be ideal were the Jamaican government be able to have a fund to sustain former athletes, but, of course this isn't realistic in the current tough economic environment

But funds generated from a viable sports industry could be set aside, as a sort of pensions fund, to assist athletes in their lean years after appearing on the global stage, should they be unable to find suitable jobs or benefit from substantive endorsements

Here is a challenge, not only to the Jamaican government, but to the Jamaican private sector, and, indeed, to the Jamaican diaspora, to collaborate in initiating realistic plans to develop a, viable Jamaican sports industry Such an industry has the potential to be very profitable, as it has strong, inherent marketing capabilities More importantly, this industry has the potential for assisting in the financial security of former Jamaican athletes who were truly ambassadors, blazing brand Jamaica across the globe

Canadian PM holds talks with Caribbean leaders on Haiti

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has held a second round of talks with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders on the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in Haiti

According to the statement issued on the weekend by the Office of the Prime Minister on the latest round of talks, Prime Minister Trudeau and CARICOM leaders received an update from the Haitian Prime Minister Dr Ariel Henry “ on the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in Haiti

“The leaders conveyed their deep concerns about the ongoing unrest and suffering, including the violence committed by armed gangs against Haitians in Port au Prince and neighboring regions,” the statement said

It said Prime Minister Trudeau updated CARICOM leaders on Canada's assistance to Haiti and the assessment of the current situation

Trudeau highlighted recent support for Haiti, including joint airlift operations with the United States to deliver tactical and armored vehicles and supplies to the Haitian National Police (HNP) to help restore security and stability

He spoke of the creation of the Joint Program for the Haitian National Police United Nations Development Program basket fund, with seed funding of CDN$$10 million (One CAD US$10 73 cents) from Canada and three million US from the United States and encouraged CARICOM members to also contribute

“The leaders discussed the need to remove blockades by gangs, including at the Varreux terminal, that are exacerbating the humanitar-

ian crisis by restricting access to the fuel, water, and medicine urgently needed to respond to food insecurity and the rising number of cholera cases in Haiti The leaders also discussed the importance of sanctions to break the cycle of corruption in Haiti, halting funding to the armed gangs, and holding those responsible for the crisis to account,” the statement said

Trudeau commended CARICOM's leadership and focus on addressing the complex humanitarian, security, and political crises Haiti faces In turn, CARICOM leaders underscored the value of Canada's commitment to close collaboration with CARICOM and regional and international partners to find a durable solution to Haiti's long term stability and sustainable development

“The leaders emphasized the need to continue working closely together in response to Haiti's immediate humanitarian and security needs, and also to facilitate inclusive, Haitian led political dialogue towards free and fair elections at the earliest possible opportunity,” the statement added

It said Prime Minister Trudeau and CARICOM leaders “agreed to stay in close contact as the situation in Haiti unfolds ”

Haiti gang leaders and associates to be sanctioned by the UN

The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously approved a sanctions regime for Haiti, targeting gang leaders and those who finance them, in the hope of easing months of violence and lawlessness which has fueled a major humanitarian crisis

Criminal gangs have been blocking access to the main fuel terminal in the capital Port au Prince, bringing critical services to a standstill, as Haiti grapples with a widening cholera epidemic, amid political and economic meltdown

The UN said “catastrophic” levels of hunger

have been recorded this month for the first time, in the gang controlled Cité Soleil neighborhood, and 4 7 million people are facing acute hunger, with many losing access to jobs, markets, health, and nutrition services

The UN said Resolution 2653, drafted by the United States and Mexico, is the first sanctions regime adopted since that of Mali, just over five years ago It establishes a committee that will be responsible for designating the individuals and entities to be sanctioned

The resolution specifically sanctions notorious gang leader, Jimmy Cherizier, an ex

police officer who is the most powerful gang boss in the country, known by his alias “Barbeque ”

He heads the so called “G9 Families and Allies”, and the annex notes that he has engaged in “acts that threaten the peace, security and stability of Haiti”, having planned or directed acts that amount to “serious human rights abuses ”

The sanctions include assets freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo, against those engaging in or supporting criminal activity and violence, involving armed groups and criminal networks

Haiti Hospitals grappling with oxygen shortage; patients at risk

One of the main hospitals in Port au Prince Haiti, the General Hospital, is currently facing a shortage of oxygen and there are fears of the worst for the lives of the patients who depend on it

According to hospital officials, the institution's oxygen supplier has warned that it will soon be unable to supply oxygen, as essential production equipment is blocked at Port Lafiteau

The hospital still has a maximum reserve of one to two weeks for the survival of its patients

Other hospitals are also affected by the lack of oxygen, but this has been attributed to the lack of fuel

However, the situation at private hospitals is different – according to the director of the Development of Health Activities in Haiti (DASH), Dr Ronald Laroche the network is not affected by the lack of fuel as the essential infrastructures are running on solar energy

Criminal gangs have been blocking access to the main fuel terminal in the capital Port au Prince, bringing critical services to a standstill, as Haiti grapples with a widening cholera epidemic, amid political and economic meltdown

The UN said “catastrophic” levels of hunger have been recorded this month for the first time, in the gang controlled Cité Soleil neighborhood, and 4 7 million people are facing acute hunger, with many losing access to jobs, markets, health, and nutrition services

Trinidad Court awards millions to former central bank governor

A Trinidad High Court Tuesday awarded former central bank governor, Jwala Rambarran, TT$5.47 million (One TT dollar=US$0 16 cents) in compensation for being wrongfully dismissed in December 2015.

Justice Devindra Rampersad upheld Rambarran’s case in June this year but only calculated the compensation that represents the salary and benefits the former governor would have received had his contract not been terminated by the government before it was due to end in July 2017

In his ruling, Justice Rampersad said that the termination of the appointment on the advice of Finance Minister Colm Imbert was “seriously flawed” and that Rambarran’s constitutional rights to protection of the law and to a fair hearing in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice were breached and that the decision was illegal, null, and void Rambarran was previously awarded the sum of TT$175,000 for vindicatory damages Interest will run at 2 5 percent from January 2019

Justice Rampersad ordered that the Central Bank tabulate Rambarran’s lost earnings, inclusive of income tax and statutory deductions had he not been dismissed

Jwala Rambarran was appointed to the post in July 2012, and his contract was terminated in December 2015 His dismissal came shortly after he announced that Trinidad and Tobago was in a recession and after he revealed the biggest foreign exchange users in the country

In his constitutional claim, Rambarran contended that the government unlawfully revoked his appointment in breach of his constitutional right to due process and fairness

Justice Rampersad ruled that if there were concerns that Rambarran’s alleged conduct was in breach of aspects of the Central Bank Act and Financial Institutions Act, both had provisions for criminal charges to be laid which Rambarran would

have had to defend before a magistrate “Parliament intended that if there was a breach of either of the acts that there was a remedy to deal with that breach,” he said, noting that Imbert did not reveal the full reasons for his recommendation

As part of his claim, Rambarran was seeking additional compensation for losing out on a position as a senior advisor to the G 24 Secretariat based in Washington DC Rambarran was also seeking significant vindicatory damages claiming that he suffered psychological effects over his dismissal, but Justice Rampersad noted that Rambarran’s medical expert could not prove that the condition she treated in 2016 was directly caused by his dismissal

Head of former Trinidad-based company Shaun Rampersaud released on bail

The chief executive officer of Ramps Logistics, Shaun Rampersaud, is due to return to a magistrate's court on November 25, after he was released on half a million dollars (One Guyana dollar=US$0 004 cents) bail on ten charges of false declarations made over the past two years to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA)

Rampersaud pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly, and his attorney, Nigel Hughes, in his application for self bail said his client has strong ties to Guyana and has an unblemished record

He said his client does not pose a flight risk and returned on Thursday to defend the company's name

The GRA alleges that the logistics company which had originally been based in Trinidad and Tobago, had between 2021 and 2022, made ten false declarations on applications presented to a customs officer for tax exemptions on several items

The court was told that Ramps falsely declared that it was the seller of items that included heavy duty equipment, and chemical compounds, among others

Media reports in Guyana said the case against Ramps Logistics followed the recent announcement by the company that it had filed a lawsuit against the government for the non issuance of a local content certificate to operate in the oil and gas sector

In its lawsuit, the company is contending that the state's decision to deny its application for entry on the Local Content Register and non issuance of the Certificate of Local Content Registration, is “unlawful, unreasonable and arbitrary ”

As a result, it is seeking several court orders, including an order compelling the Guyana government to issue the certificate and register it in the LCS

UNITED STATES SENATOR

Val Demings (DEM)

The race for Senate is very crucial The Democrats need to convert this seat to their side in the effort to regain, and in fact have a stronger hold on the Senate. Val Demings will bring a breath of fresh air to the Senate. She has throughout her campaign shown she understands the needs of the Caribbean community. As a former police chief, she understands the importance of fighting and reducing crime in the state, and the rest of the country. She firmly stands for a woman's right to choose, understands the plight residents are having with the almost impossible cost of affordable housing. She also understands the needs of the state's vast senior population and will definitely work to reduce the price of drugs to seniors, and not prevent lowering the price of drugs such as insulin like the incumbent she is trying to unseat did. Florida needs a senator who understands the importance of putting the needs of its residents first, and not always follow his or her party line as if wearing blinders

With no formal training, history and heritage have been Woollery's teacher. Her color choices capture the revelry and J'ouvert spirit of Trinidad, her parent's home country, she notes. And the patterns and subjects she depicts are inspired by the masks, body paintings and patterned fabrics that are found across the African continent

Growing up in Brooklyn, Woollery was able to reinforce a deep connection to her culture “West Indian culture was all around me and it was in everything I did,” she reflects “Most of my teachers were West Indian I never had to explain myself, and I didn't have to code switch I could just be me!”

It was impossible to come up in the cultural melting pot of Brooklyn and not have art penetrate you to your bone However, Woollery wasn't given room to explore her artistic side Her story mirrors that of many Caribbean immigrant families Her parents sacrificed a lot to move to a new country and establish a stable, comfortable life for their children Like most, they envisioned a thriving, financially stable career for their daughter “They focused on academics, and academics and academics,” Woollery sighs

So, she excelled in her field Woollery graduated from the NYU Silver School of Social Work in 2010 but knew something wasn't right

“For many years it felt like I was missing an appendage,” she says of her life prior to fully embracing her creative side “I was very despondent and unhappy, and it was showing up in so many different ways ”

She went through life under a haze of disenchantment, until one day she decided, screw it, she's going to paint “I realized that my heart started beating!” Woollery smiles. “I was showing up in my household with my children, with my husband I was a better version of me ”

The pandemic further pushed things into perspective Up until last June, Woollery balanced her day job with a burgeoning art career, becoming more and more comfortable in her style as she studied from the school of Instagram But, like many, she lost her job, and that pushed her into art full time “I felt like I couldn't ever go

“West Indian culture was all around me and it was in everything I did,” she reflects. “Most of my teachers were West Indian. I never had to explain myself, and I didn't have to code switch. I could just be me!”

backward I had outgrown my old job, but I certainly didn't know that art would pay off for me,” she beams, counting her blessings

So what's next for Woollery? She's still figuring that out

Now in the DMV area (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) with her two kids, she thinks about the effect of growing up in Brooklyn It isn't Trinidad, she notes, but there was still Caribbean energy she doesn't have in the DC area Brooklyn made her, and she plans to pay homage to it through a collection highlighting her Caribbean Brooklyn roots From there, Woollery is considering working with textiles and print She also envisions a brand deal at some point

Regardless, Woollery's goal is the same She wants her art to connect with people through whatever medium and whatever method she uses “If you have that beating in your heart, it was placed there for a reason, ” she affirms That purpose, she says, is instilled from birth and once you find it, it's always best to dive in fully

Jamaican arrested after illegally voting in Florida elections

Alford Nelson, a 57 year old Jamaican was arrested on Wednesday after reportedly voting as an unqualified elector in Broward County, Florida earlier this year by using a counterfeit birth certificate

Nelson voted twice in Broward County using the name Alfred Samuels He was released from jail without having to post bail on Thursday

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) arrested Nelson on two counts of voting as an unqualified elector

According to Broward County Supervisor of Elections records, the Jamaican voted by mail in the general election on January 11 and again on March 8

His arrest and charge were due to an

investigation by various agencies, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Election Crime Unit, the Florida Department of State, and the Office of Election Crimes and Security

It was reported that an affidavit revealed that Nelson was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica On June 21, 1977, he entered Miami as a lawful permanent resident

However, according to Homeland Security, lawful permanent residents, also known as ' green card' holders, are not US citizens and are not allowed to vote

Nelson may face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for voting under a fictitious name in the United States

Also, it is reported that the Jamaican had not applied for naturalization and had overstayed his original entry documents

Nelson told investigators earlier this month at his Lauderhill home that he renewed his Florida identification card (ID) at the DMV with a false birth certificate purchased in New York City for US$2,000

Ingrid Murray

contracts secured under its belt

“Hard work brings success,” Murray says It's something she learned in primary school in Jamaica A teacher had the children recite the phrase daily “I believe that,” Murray affirms That is why she has always worked hard at any job that came her way “I'm also Christian I grew up praying, having faith and believing in God Even though my faith may waiver, it's only because I am impatient I have the discernment to live for God, and I know that will be recuperated I believe if you ask, you will receive If you seek, you will find ”

Murray also says she had a big vision for her life since she was a child “I wanted the big house, the husband and the children; the picture I saw on TV I knew I'd have to work hard to achieve that ”

Giving back is an integral part of Murray's life She has adopted her past community of Hellshire Every year she hosts self funded give back initiatives in September, October and December, providing assistance for students, seniors and residents in need In the US, each Christmas she takes time to express gratitude to her clients by baking and delivering Jamaican Christmas cakes and sorrel to 30 40 clients herself

“My father was a giver He would give you the shirt off his back I grew up seeing that Plus, people have given so much to me over the years,” Murray explains “My first ticket to the US was bought by someone I believe everyone must play their part You can't always be a taker ”

The formula of giving, working hard, and being ambitious and faithful, despite her impatience, is one Murray recommends to anyone desirous of achieving their wildest dreams and beyond

Phil Simmons resigns over West Indies World Cup failure

West Indies head coach Phil Simmons apologized for the side's disappointing performance that resulted in their shock exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia but said his decision to resign was not a knee jerk reaction to that situation

Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced Simmons' resignation in a statement on Monday evening, saying his last assignment will be the upcoming two Test series against Australia November 30 to December 12

“From a personal perspective, this is not a knee jerk reaction, but a move I have been considering for some time, and now is the time to make public that I will step down as West Indies head coach at the end of the Test series against Australia,” Simmons said

“It is earlier than hoped for, but I will now focus my energies in Australia on continuing to build on the excellent progress the Test team has made Of course we will also carry out the necessary review into our World Cup campaign ”

West Indies' nine wicket defeat to Ireland last Friday saw them eliminated from the main draw of the tournament

Simmons, who was at the helm in 2016 when West Indies won their second ICC Men's T20 World Cup title, said the regional side's performances this time around were just not good enough

“I acknowledge that it's not just the team that is hurting but the proud nations we represent as well It's disappointing and heart wrenching but we just didn't turn up We weren't good enough and we now have to watch

a tournament play out without our involvement It's unfathomable, and for that, I deeply apologize to our fans and followers,” the former West Indies allrounder said

Of his time as head coach, Simmons said he had enjoyed “aspects of the unique challenge” and the unwavering support of his management team

“There remain some exceptional individuals within CWI who I firmly believe will continue to work in the best interests of West Indies cricket,” he said

CWI President Ricky Skerritt thanked Simmons for his hard work and dedication to West Indies cricket, most recently in his role as head coach

“Phil is a proud West Indian with high ideals and has never lacked motivation in

guiding our younger players on and off the field of play He brought valuable experience and stability at a very important period of transformation, including the most challenging environment of the COVID 19 pandemic We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” he said

Simmons was appointed West Indies coach after the 2015 World Cup but was suspended for a period and then fired despite leading the Caribbean side to the 2016 T20 title when they defeated England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India He was reappointed in October 2019

There had been calls for him to resign following the West Indies' dismal performances in several series

Shyne Barrow

down this road

“Like I said, the UDP has been through too much We have triggered the constitutional requirements of the party in terms of the recall of the party leader and that is what we are doing We are leaving it at that

“We are not here to badmouth the party leader, to badmouth anybody in the party, we are just simply fulfilling Article 7 of our party's constitution We move from there The next step, like I said, we are going privately to speak with the delegates and campaign, and we hope that the next side does the same thing,” August added

Media reports said Barrow, a former rapper, has come under much criticism for his style of leadership, but has brushed aside such criticisms pointing to the work he has done since coming to office six months ago

“In six months, I set a schedule for standard bearers' conventions, for delegates conventions, everything that I have promised, I have kept my word So, if you have to lie to people to get them to sign a petition against me, that's sad,” Barrow told reporters

He said he would not rule out parliamentarians within the ruling PUP being in collusion to implement the plan to oust him

“There are external forces, in my view, PUP special interests, who, in their vested desire to have a destabilized, divided UDP, will translate into a victory for the PUP in the next general elections and that is what this is all about
