Diaspora and Entertainment Fue Jamaica's US$4 Billion Tourism B

Jamaica's tourism industry is thriving, with the diaspora playing an increasingly pivotal role in its success In 2024, the country earned a record-breaking US$4 3 billion from 4 3 million visitors, underscoring the sector's resilience and cultural pull

Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett credited the strong performance to the country's enduring appeal despite challenges such as reduced airline capacity, Hurricane Beryl, and travel advisories "We had 68,000 less seats into Jamaica, which meant there was a natural reduction in the projected figures in terms of arrivals Tourism, as you know, is resilient," Bartlett said

A key driver of this resilience is the tradition of Jamaicans living abroad returning home during the festive season December has long been a peak period for the diaspora to reconnect with family, friends, and cultural roots This trend continues to grow, bringing significant economic benefits to the island

An increase in entertainment offerings has also fueled the island's tourism boom in 2024

One of the standout events during this holiday season was the New Year's Eve Freedom Street concert at Kingston's National Stadium, which exemplifies the robust tourism tie between Jamaica and its diaspora The concert, headlined by dancehall star Vybz

Over 14,000 Jamaicans benefit from overseas work program

A total of 14,434 Jamaicans secured employment overseas in 2024 under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security's Overseas Employment Programme, with the majority contributing to Canada's agricultural sector

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dione Jennings, revealed that 8,255 workers 57 percent of the total traveled to Canada under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP) She shared the update during a send-off ceremony for 96 workers at the Ministry's Overseas Employment Centre in Kingston on Friday, January 3

Charging the departing workers to uphold Jamaica's reputation, Jennings stated, “The only burden you bear in participating in this program is to ensure that you represent us well ”

State Minister Dr Norman Dunn highlighted the significance of the SAWP, emphasizing the opportunity it provides for workers to achieve their personal goals while supporting their families

“This program is an opportunity for the workers to realize their dreams and aspirations and to create a better quality of life for themselves and their families,” Dunn said

He urged workers, especially firsttimers, to maintain the high standards associated with Jamaican laborers

“First-timers, you have the legacy to carry on You have to continue to fly the name of Jamaican workers high because the Jamaican worker is known to be hardworking, disciplined, dedicated, committed to his task, and self-motivated. These qualities are not lost on the Canadian

employer and so they continue to participate in this program, requesting persons to return year after year,” he added

For nearly 60 years, the partnership between Jamaica and Canada under the SAWP has bolstered agricultural productivity in Canada while creating significant employment opportunities for Jamaicans

While praising the program's successes, officials have acknowledged challenges, particularly with workers abandoning contracts. Labour and Social Security

Minister Pearnel Charles Jr reported a decrease in the number of workers leaving

the government's farm work program in 2024, addressing concerns about rising incidents in previous years

Data from the ministry shows that between 2018 and 2022, Jamaican workers accounted for 90 8 percent or 2,597 of participants who ran off under the SAWP

This issue was most prevalent among new recruits who found that the program did not meet their expectations

Efforts to address these concerns include emphasizing clear communication about the program's requirements and providing support to workers

Towards the end of 2023, the Department of Labor initiated consultations with key stakeholders to discuss proposed changes and amendments to the work permit process

Nearly 6,000 people killed Haiti in 2024

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has renewed his urgent call for nations to stop deporting Haitians to their homeland, citing an alarming surge in violence and human rights abuses

The appeal comes as the UN Human Rights Office revealed that at least 5,601 people were killed in Haiti last year, an increase of over 1,000 compared to 2023

“These figures alone cannot capture the absolute horrors being perpetrated in Haiti, but they show the unremitting violence to which people are being subjected,” Türk said

The killings, primarily linked to escalating gang violence, were accompanied by 2,212 injuries and 1,494 kidnappings in 2024, according to the UN report One of the most shocking incidents occurred in early December when at least 207 people were massacred in the Cité Soleil area of Port-auPrince The attack, orchestrated by the leader of the Wharf Jérémie gang, targeted older individuals accused of causing the death of the gang leader's son through alleged voodoo practices

The report detailed that many victims were mutilated and burned, with some bodies thrown into the sea to erase evidence

The UN also documented 315 lynchings of

suspected gang members and affiliates last year, some reportedly facilitated by Haitian police officers Additionally, 281 cases of alleged summary executions involving specialized police units were recorded between January and December 2024

Türk emphasized that widespread impunity for human rights violations and systemic corruption are fueling Haiti's crisis

“It has long been clear that impunity for human rights violations and abuses, as well as corruption, remain prevalent in Haiti, constituting some of the main drivers of the

multi-dimensional crisis the country faces, along with entrenched economic and social inequalities,” he said Türk called for enhanced efforts by Haitian authorities, supported by the international community, to restore the rule of law and address the root causes of the crisis

He highlighted the need for logistical and financial support for the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti, which was sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council

Over last weekend, Guatemala deployed

an additional 150 soldiers to join the MSS, bringing the total personnel count to 590 The force includes contingents from Kenya, El Salvador, The Bahamas, Jamaica, and Belize

Türk also stressed the importance of strengthening oversight mechanisms within the National Haitian Police to hold officers accountable for alleged human rights violations Furthermore, he urged the full implementation of the Security Council's arms embargo to stem the flow of weapons into Haiti, which he said often end up in the hands of criminal gangs

“Weapons flowing into Haiti often end up in the hands of the criminal gangs, with tragic results: thousands killed, hundreds of thousands displaced, essential infrastructure and services, such as schools and hospitals, disrupted and destroyed,” he said

Türk reiterated his plea to nations to halt deportations to Haiti, warning that the current conditions make safe and dignified returns impossible

“The acute insecurity and resulting human rights crisis in the country simply do not allow for the safe, dignified, and sustainable return of Haitians And yet, deportations are continuing,” he said “I reiterate my call to all States not to forcibly return anyone to Haiti ”

UN rights expert condemns attacks on Haiti hospitals

The UN's top human rights expert in Haiti, William O'Neill, has denounced what he described as “intentional” attacks on hospitals, clinics, and healthcare workers by armed gangs, warning that the country's medical system is nearing collapse

In a statement released last Friday, O'Neill highlighted several recent incidents, including a December 17 attack on Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port-au-Prince and the December 24 killing of journalists and a police officer at the General Hospital during its official reopening

“Criminal gangs have murdered and kidnapped physicians, nurses, and healthcare

workers, including humanitarian workers,” O'Neill said He added that gangs have “burned, ransacked, and destroyed many hospitals and clinics, forcing many to close or suspend their operations ”

According to O'Neill, only 37 percent of health facilities in Port-au-Prince remain fully functional Even these are difficult to access due to unchecked gang violence, leaving millions of Haitians vulnerable

“The Haitian people – including hundreds of thousands of children living in very precarious conditions – are once again paying the high price of this violence with their right to health severely hindered,” O'Neill stated

He expressed particular concern over the spread of diseases such as cholera and tuberculosis, exacerbated by the lack of access to healthcare services

O'Neill also pointed to repeated threats against health facilities and reports of alleged police involvement in the violence, further complicating the crisis The December 24 attack at the General Hospital underscored the dangers faced not only by healthcare workers but also by journalists in Haiti Many reporters have been killed or forced to flee the country due to death threats

“I urge the international community to do everything it can to help Haitian authorities to combat rampant insecurity and ensure the realization of the right to health, including unhindered access to health facilities, goods, and services,” he said

Democracy Lives

Reflecting on January 6, 2021, Four Years Later

Four years can make a world of difference

On January 6, 2025, the certification of Donald J. Trump and J D. Vance as the 47th president and vice president of the United States unfolded with a calmness that stood in stark contrast to the turmoil of January 6, 2021 Unlike the chaos of that infamous day, this year's proceedings were marked by a reassuring ordinariness, a testament to the enduring strength of the democratic process envisioned by the Founding Fathers in 1776

Historically, the certification of presidential elections in Congress was a routine affair so unremarkable that many Americans were scarcely aware of it That changed dramatically in 2021 when thousands of people marched on the Capitol in a shocking attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris

This unprecedented episode cast a dark shadow over the nation's democratic history, but it also sparked a renewed commitment to the principles of democracy, showing that even in times of crisis, the will of the people would ultimately prevail

In a moment of symbolic significance, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate defeated in the November 2024 election, presided over the certification process this year Her announcement that Donald Trump was duly certified as president exemplified the dignity and grace inherent in a peaceful transfer of power It was a powerful reminder of how democracy should function with respect for established norms and institutions For many, it was a poignant image of the peaceful transition of power that represents the ideal of democratic governance

The U S Constitution, with its intricate system of checks and balances, ensures the integrity of presidential elections From statelevel certification of electoral results to congressional confirmation, the process is designed to prevent fraud and uphold the will of the voters The events of January 6, 2025, underscored the futility of any efforts to subvert

this system As one political commentator aptly noted during the proceedings, “America could still be certifying the same president and vice president today without the tragedy and upheaval of January 6, 2021 The disruption was entirely unnecessary ”

Despite cynicism about democracy's resilience in an era marked by rising autocratic tendencies worldwide, the U S Constitution remains a robust safeguard against such threats

Globally, many nations are grappling with challenges to their democratic processes, with populist movements and authoritarian figures gaining ground However, the U S stands as a reminder that, while democracy may be tested, its foundation remains resilient Attempts to undermine democratic principles may arise, but the system is designed to withstand them, ensuring that the will of the people prevails Leaders who seek to impose their personal agendas at the expense of democratic values ultimately face rejection by voters

The true strength of democracy lies with the

people Across the globe, citizens are demanding better governance and more affordable living conditions, holding leaders accountable for their failures In the U S , this accountability is enshrined in the democratic process, ensuring that leaders serve the public's interests rather than imposing their own As history shows, attempts to erode democracy inevitably fail when met with the collective will of an engaged electorate January 6, 2025, offered a reassuring glimpse of democracy functioning as intended a peaceful, orderly process that honors the will of the people For many, it was a reminder of why they believe in the promise of democracy: that despite its imperfections, it remains a resilient and enduring force, one that continues to provide hope for future generations

regardless of your ethnicity Sunscreen only works if you reapply it every two hours, according to skincancer org Sun protection forms the foundation of any anti-aging skincare plan, according to the American Academy of Dermatology and The Skin Cancer Foundation, as the sun ’ s rays make our skin age more quickly – so regular use of daily sun protection is essential at all ages

The 30s: Exfoliate

Once you hit your 30s, your skin’s natural exfoliation process begins to slow down The growth factor in your skin also decreases This means that you start to lose a teaspoon of collagen from your face every year by the time you are 30 Continue with your glycolic acid base cleanser You also need an oil-free make up remover Using an eye cream both day and night might help to increase moisture and suppleness around the eye area Dr Downie recommends a dual-pronged approach to help address some of the first signs of aging using topicals plus IMDEEN Derma One, an antiaging oral supplement that provides nutrients from within, targeted to the dermal skin layers where creams and lotions can’t reach This supports hydration and helps to create a radiant glow

40s: Strengthen

As you enter your 40s, your estrogen levels begin to change, resulting in dryer and thinner skin Anti-aging products and creams with ingredients like retinoids and peptides are must-haves and always make sure to apply sunblock Moisturize with serums containing growth factors and hyaluronic acid Exfoliate –use a gentle face cleansing brush to help get rid of dead skin cells. Be sure to extend your skin care down to your neck and décolleté (upper chest) area There are specifically formulated products to soothe and ease discoloration in this area While you work hard to care for your skin on the outside, add IMEDEEN Time Perfection This age-adjusted anti-aging supplement formula helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, so add it to your daily routine to nourish your skin from within Nourishment from within supports the whole body, including the back of hands and upper chest

50s: Beyond Hydration and Prevention

You should already be on a steady antiaging regimen As soon as you count 50 candles on your birthday cake, moisturizing should be your top skincare priority Look for products with retinoids, peptides, alpha

hydroxy and amino acids You should be keeping vigilant with your sunscreen and moisturizers You could always consider laser treatment surgery, Botox with filler or other non-invasive treatments IMEDEEN Prime Renewal, the anti-aging skincare formula for women 50 and older, is a dietary supplement that helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots as it protects and repairs the skin, stimulating collagen production, and is a convenient addition to your daily skin care regimen

Most importantly, Dr Downie reminds that true beauty comes from within, so embrace your age throughout your life. Try to avoid excessive sun exposure (and indoor tanning as these rays may accelerate skin aging,) moisturize daily and consider an antiaging oral supplement Exercise, eat healthy foods, don’t forget to get enough sleep (it’s called beauty rest for a reason) and if you smoke, stop

Follow this guide and take steps to shift you skincare routine throughout the decades to feel as beautiful as you look – both inside and out

The reinstatement of the sheriff's office comes after voters approved Amendment 10 in 2018, which mandated the return of sheriffs in Florida counties where the position had been absorbed into other governmental structures In Miami-Dade, the role had been eliminated amid corruption scandals, with law enforcement leadership placed under the mayor's control

Robin Russell, president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, described the event as a transformative moment for the capital “It's the boost Kingston needed!” he said, with 32,000 arrivals at Norman Manley International Airport between December 22 and December 30 alone Among these travelers were 18 private jets carrying celebrities and high-net-worth individuals, contributing to the island's growing reputation as a luxury destination

During the swearing-in ceremony, her husband, retired Miami-Dade police officer Kurt Stutz, pinned the official sheriff's badge onto her uniform. The event also included the retirement of the MDPD flag and the unveiling of the new sheriff's flag

“I really felt the joy of stepping into the role of sheriff and seeing my friends and family and the joy in their faces,” said Cordero-Stutz “My primary goal is to listen to what my community is asking ”

This milestone in the City of Hollywood is not just a reflection of time, but a tribute to the resilience, vision, and dedication of the countless individuals who have shaped this city. A century ago, Hollywood was just one square mile of farmland, founded by the visionary Joseph Wesley Young Through his leadership and the hard work of the pioneers, dreamers, and innovators, the foundation was laid for the thriving city it is today

Broward County Commissioner Alexandra P Davis says she is proud to be a part of such a special celebration “As the Commissioner representing District 7, I am especially proud to be a part of this signifi-

The bodies were discovered during a routine post-flight maintenance inspection after the plane, operating as Flight 1801, had arrived from John F Kennedy International Airport in New York According to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, a gate technician spotted two men who appeared to be deceased in the landing gear area A law enforcement radio broadcast recorded the moment, noting that the individuals were identified as “Signal 7,” the code for deceased persons

The Airbus A320 jet was in service nearly all day Monday, according to FlightAware data, first taking off from Kingston, Jamaica, at 1:10 a m. It arrived in New York ahead of a 7:36 a m departure to Salt Lake City The jet then flew back to JFK before concluding its day in Fort Lauderdale

The airline has launched an investigation into how the individuals may have gained access to the plane and why they were in the landing gear compartment. The bodies, which were reportedly in a state of severe decomposition, were examined by the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the causes of death

JetBlue expressed their deep sympathy in a statement, acknowledging the tragedy and affirming their commitment to supporting the ongoing investigation alongside authorities A spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration

cant milestone The heart of our district is intertwined with Hollywood, and I look forward to the many celebrations, festivities, and reflections on the accomplishments that have brought us to this moment”, she stated “Looking ahead, I encourage everyone in District 7 and beyond to participate in the special activities throughout 2025 that will mark this historic year From community gatherings to cultural events, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Let's celebrate the past, the present, and the future of Hollywood”, expressed Commissioner Alexandra P Davis

The city council says this centennial celebration is a time for reflection, but also for renewal It is a reminder that while the landscape will continue to change, the heart of Hollywood remains steadfast in its commitment to community, connection, and progress

(TSA) confirmed that they are working closely with the airline, airport, FAA, and law enforcement on the case The incident has not disrupted airport operations, and no impact on the flight's passengers was reported, as they had already deplaned before the bodies were discovered Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith also addressed speculation about the nationalities of the deceased She confirmed that, while there has been media reporting suggesting the individuals might be Jamaican, there is no confirmed information on their identities “We remain in contact with the relevant authorities and will update the public as soon as we have greater clarity,” Johnson Smith said in a statement This incident is the latest in a concerning series of stowaway deaths, which have sparked widespread concerns about airline

security The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated it is not investigating the matter, as it did not involve the flight crew or the aircraft's operation The FAA has highlighted the dangers of stowing away in landing gear compartments, pointing out that the small space and extreme conditions, including the lack of oxygen and freezing temperatures at high altitudes, make survival highly unlikely

According to a 2011 FAA report, approximately 80% of individuals who attempt to stow away in wheel wells or other external compartments of aircraft do not survive These incidents are often fatal due to a combination of the risks posed by low oxygen, freezing temperatures, and the physical dangers of the landing gear mechanism

The discovery follows a similar incident two weeks ago, when a body was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Maui Both cases have raised alarms about the security measures in place to prevent such dangerous stowaway attempts

As news of the tragedy spread, tributes poured in from former colleagues, students, and education officials Education Minister

Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon remembered Stevens as “ more than an exemplary leader; he was a beacon of inspiration and dedication ”

“His vision for excellence in education and his steadfast commitment to the holistic development of our students left an indelible mark on the Jessie Ripoll Primary School community Alongside him, Mrs Stevens was a supportive partner and a cherished presence to the extended school family, always contributing with grace and generosity,” she said

To support the grieving school community, the Ministry of Education has deployed trauma and grief counseling teams. The reopening of classes was also delayed by one day to January 7, and a gathering of school board members, teachers, ministry officials, and friends also took place at the school Stevens' death leaves a significant void at Jessie Ripoll Primary, where his leadership and dedication to education were deeply admired

Broward Schools to come under Inspector General oversight beginning February

Beginning next month, Broward County's Office of the Inspector General (BCOIG) will officially expand its oversight to include Broward Schools, marking a significant shift in accountability for one of Florida's largest school systems

The move follows a decisive vote in N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 4 , w h e n C o u n t y Referendum 2 passed with 68% support, signaling public demand for stronger scrutiny of the corruption-plagued district

The new oversight, set to launch in February 2025 according to the Sun Sentinel, will allow the BCOIG to independently investigate, audit, and review the operations of the school board, superintendent, and district employees

The move comes after years of controversies and scandals, most notably the 2022 suspension of four school board members by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Acting on recommendations from a statewide grand jury, the governor cited the board members for incompetence, neglect of duty, and misuse of authority. These events fueled public demand for a more robust and independent oversight mechanism

The schools-specific branch of the BCOIG will cost the district $1 2 million annually, though no tax increases will be required to fund the initiative The new office will include a team of auditors, supervisors, an attorney, and administrative staff dedicated to monitoring school board operations

With subpoena power, the BCOIG will have the authority to compel witnesses, access documents, and audit contracts, providing independent oversight that supporters say is essential to restoring transparency and accountability

The milestone marks a new era of accountability and aims to restore public confidence in the governance of a district that has faced years of controversy and mismanagement

Kirk Franklin apologizes for 'disrespectul' outfit at Jamaica gospel concert

Gospel artist Kirk Franklin has issued a public apology after facing backlash from conservative Christians in Jamaica for his performance attire during the “Fun in the Son” concert last April

The annual event, organized by Best Dressed Chicken, a brand under the Jamaica Broilers Group, is known for its commitment to Judeo-Christian values

During the outdoor performance, Kirk Franklin wore a tank top and shorts while ministering, which some attendees deemed inappropriate

In a video shared on YouTube last week, Franklin explained he had not anticipated that his outfit would be considered “disrespectful ”

“I am aware now that my choice of attire, which as a team we thought was going to be fine being outside in the weather, was going to be something that would not come across as disrespectful,” Franklin said in the video, which addressed significant moments from 2024

“I've spent most of my career dancing and moving around and jumping on stage that I didn't know that I would ever do anything that would ever offend anyone in any community, but it did And because it did, I sincerely apologize,” he continued

The 54-year-old artist also reflected on his growth and the importance of humility in ministry “I sincerely apologize because I never want to get to a place that I can't learn, that I can't learn what I need to do better, what I can do different to make sure that as I grow as a man, grow physically or in any aspect, that I'm always being humble enough and submissive enough to hear people and their concerns about anything

being bigger than the message of Jesus,” Franklin said “It doesn't matter what my goal and intent is, if I'm louder than the message of Jesus, then I failed ” Franklin's performance coincided with the celebration of Best Dressed Chicken's 65th anniversary, an event highlighting “God's faithfulness ” The concert also featured Grammy-winning artist Toby Mac and several local Christian performers In an earlier statement to The Christian Post, Jamaica Broilers Group President and CEO Christopher Levy expressed disappointment in Franklin's actions “When we engage an artist, it is with a degree of trust that the artist will be aware and sensitive to their audience We expected more from Mr Franklin,” Levy said “We are cognizant that each of us [is] working through our relationship with The Lord, and we prayerfully support his growth ”
