Barbadian Ronelle King among UN 2022 cohort of SDG Young Leaders

Every two years, the Office of the Secretary General's Envoy on Youth picks out young change makers who are at the forefront of attempts to combat the world's most pressing issues, and whose leadership is catalyzing the achievement of the SDGs

The Barbadian, Ronelle King, a multi award winning gender justice activist, in 2016 founded the #LifeInLeggings hashtag, a safe space for women who had experienced sexual violence to express themselves

It evolved into a grassroots organization: women, encouraged by solidarity, were empowered to speak out on their social media platforms about their experiences

King has gone on to play a major role in the “Reclaim Our Streets” women's solidarity march, and Pink Parliament, which seeks to increase women's participation in decision making spaces, which was awarded a 2021 Nelson Mandela Graca Machel Innovation Award in the category 'Democratizing governance processes and systems'

Her other awards include the 2017 Youth Hero Award, the 2018 Queen's Young Leader Award by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, the 2022 Future Island Leader Award and the 2022 Ignite Caribbean 30 under 30 Changemaker Award

In a statement, the UN said the current cohort of leaders were chosen following an open call for applications earlier this year, which resulted in more than 5,400 applications from over 190 countries Since launching in 2016, the initiative has collectively reached millions of young people around the world

“The 17 Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are a diverse, highly accomplished group, all between the ages of 17 and 29, who hail from all corners of the world and work across all pillars of the UN, including sustainable development, human rights, and peace and security ”

Among them are an aspiring astronaut, a poet, and a Paralympic medalist Others range from artists to climate entrepreneurs, and education innovators

“Even amidst the ongoing pandemic, climate crisis and global instability, these young people demonstrate immense resilience, resourcefulness and leadership in finding innovative solutions to the world's biggest challenges”

In 2015, 195 nations agreed with the United Nation that they can change the world for the better. They said this will be accomplished by bringing together their respective governments, businesses, media, institutions of higher education, and local NGOs to improve the lives of the people in their country by the year 2030

Barbadian Ronelle King is among the 2022 cohort of Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) announced by the United Nations.

A St Vincent High Court judge has sentenced a 26 year old man to more than 17 years in jail after he was found guilty of murdering a woman he wrongly thought had infected him with HIV/AIDS

Justice Brian Cottle sentenced Desron Roberts, who had been remanded for nearly four years awaiting trial, to a further 17 years, five months, and 11 days in prison

On June 27, Roberts pleaded not guilty to the charge that between October 24 and 27, 2018 he murdered Rhodesia Rochelle Bailey

The court heard that Roberts, who was then 22, had a sexual relationship with Bailey, 30, whose house he frequented On July 16, 2018, Bailey told Roberts that she was HIV positive and two days later, he went to see a doctor, who advised him to take a post exposure treatment for HIV and to get tested

Roberts began the course of medication but did not adhere to the prescription fully as he felt that some of the side effects of the medication were too harsh He had bouts of depression and contemplated suicide but was afraid to speak to anyone about his problem for fear of the reaction that he would face

On October 25, 2018, he took a knife with him to Bailey's house in an attempt to kill her A passing villager found Bailey's body early the following morning A post mortem found she died of multiple stab wounds

Following his arrest, Roberts confessed to murdering Bailey and took police to the house

In sentencing Roberts, Justice Cottle said he saw no need to depart from the guidelines regarding the aims of criminal punishment, namely retribution, deterrence, prevention, and rehabilitation and the court must follow the sentencing guidelines unless they lead to injustice in a particular case

He stated Roberts did not have the coping skills or social support network to help him to deal with the consequences of having contracted HIV and the associated social stigma He said it was unfortunate that when confronted with the crises, Roberts could only resort to violence He, however, said he did not see Roberts as likely to re offend

Cuba approves same-sex marriage referendum

Cubans have approved a sweeping “family law” code that will allow same sex couples to marry and adopt, as well as redefine rights for children and grandparents, officials said Monday, though opposition in the national referendum was unusually strong on the Communist Party governed island.

The measure — which contains more than 400 articles — was approved by 66 9 percent to 33 1 percent, the president of the National Electoral Council, Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez, told official news media, though returns from a few places remain to be counted

The reforms had met unusually strong open resistance from the growing evangelical movement in Cuba — and many other Cubans — despite an extensive government campaign in favor of the measure, including thousands of informative meetings across the country and extensive media coverage backing it

Cuban elections — in which no party other than the ruling

communist party is allowed — routinely produce victory margins of more than 90 percent — as did a referendum on a major constitutional reform in 2019

The code will allow surrogate pregnancies, broader rights for grandparents in regard to grandchildren, protection of the elderly and measures against gender violence

President Miguel Díaz Canel, who has promoted the law acknowledged questions about the measure as he voted on Sunday

Police probing death of US visitor who collapsed while hiking La Soufrière volcano

Police in St Vincent and the Grenadines say they are awaiting the results of a postmortem on a 24 year old American woman, who died at the hospital last week, after collapsing on a hike to the La Soufrière volcano

The woman, Alicia Zebutis, of Chicago, Illinois was pronounced dead last Thursday, one day after she and her husband arrived in the country

La Soufrière, which is 4,048 feet (1,234

meters) high, is a popular tourist attraction However, since it erupted in April 2021, the slopes of the volcano are littered with deep ravines that have made it especially difficult to hike

In a statement, police confirmed that Zebutis and her husband, whose name was not disclosed by the authorities, had along with a group of friends gone hiking along the La Soufriere Mountain Trail

“At about 4:00 p m the same day,

officers attached to the Georgetown Police Station were informed that a member of the group had collapsed and was in urgent need of medical attention Mrs Zebutis was transported to Georgetown Hospital She was later pronounced dead by the District Medical Officer (DMO),” the police said in the statement

It said a postmortem is expected to be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of death

New Firearms Act passed in Jamaica

Jamaica's Senate passed the new Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction, and Regulation) Act with 17 amendments on Friday September 23

The legislation which creates a dual regime will distinguish between prohibited weapons or unregulated firearms, as well as the activities associated with them, and firearms that have been duly authorized or registered

The bill also outlines the goals of establishing a framework that prohibits the illicit trade of firearms and ammunition and views possession of those prohibited firearms and ammunition

Jamaican Leon 'Leegates' McNeil killed at party

The gun attack that claimed the life of 36 year old Leon McNeil, a well known Jamaican blogger in Hayes, Clarendon, on Saturday night is a result of an ongoing gang feud, according to the police

McNeil was popularly known as YouTuber Leegates Leegates, who was killed at a party by gunmen, was one of three men killed in two separate gun incidents on Saturday

It was reported by the Hayes police that at about 8:55 p m , McNeil was at a party when a group of men approached him and opened gunfire The police were called and found McNeil and another patron suffering from gunshot wounds

Both men were taken to the hospital where McNeil succumbed to his injuries The other injured person is hospitalized in stable condition

It is believed by many social media users that McNeil was killed because of comments he made about a double murder in Portland Cottage in the parish a few hours earlier

However, police suspect that the attack at the party was the result of an ongoing feud between men in the vicinity

as the foundation for other heinous and violent crimes

Senator Matthew Samuda, minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, concluded the debate by stating that the bill will issue punishment proportionate to the crime

He also said the legislation and its amendments address the strengthening of the operational issues such as those made to Clause 101 which speaks to trial, punishment, proof, and records

Furthermore, the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) will be established as a body corporate under the new legislation

As a body corporate, the Authority will have its own legal identity and will be able to conduct activities, including entering into contracts in its name, initiating and responding to legal claims, acquiring real and personal property, and using its official seal

The legislation will return to the House of Representatives for its approval

Security review to be conducted following multi-million cocaine haul at Ian Fleming International airport

The Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) will do a security review following the recent multi million cocaine bust at the Ian Fleming International Airport in St Mary

In an interview, AAJ President and Chief Executive Officer Audley Diedrick said the drug bust has prompted the agency to take a closer look at security at the airport

According to Deidrick, the airport operates at international security standards, and based on this, the facility is required by regulation to abide by established security measures and protocols

“And I would go further to say that because we are also looking to establish operations in the United States, we ' re also having to ensure that we are utilizing measures that meet the requirements of the TSA (Transport Security Administration) of the United States ”

“When an incident like this happens, in the same way, that when 9/11 happened in

2000 it caused the aviation industry –airlines, airports – to look at their security measures and to see where, if any, improvements can be made then I would say with all honesty in a matter like this, as the operator for that airport, we will use the opportunity to look if there are any ways that we need to take any further improvements to our security system,” he added

On Friday, personnel from the Narcotics Division and Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Division, along with their counterparts from the United States and Canada, carried out targeted operations at the airport and seized ten bags containing just over 1,100 pounds of cocaine, valued at US$25 million

The Ian Fleming International Airport was upgraded from the Boscobel Aerodrome in January 2011, and earlier this year, the airport welcomed its first scheduled international flight with the arrival of a 30 seater InterCaribbean Airways aircraft from Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Workplace romances can

detrimental

Controversy has again flared over an incident of an intimate workplace relationship This time the incident occurred in sports, as the National Basketball Association (NBA) team, the Boston Celtics suspended without pay, its coach, Ime Sunday Udoka, who took them to the 2022 NBA Championships, for having a romantic relationship with a female staffer

People on social media, and on sports talk shows tend to sympathize with the coach for the intensity of the punishment. And, because Udoka is a Black man, some people see racist overtones in the actions taken by the Celtics management

But the coach worked in an organization with rules against intimate relationships between staff members Some people argue organizational rules against workplace romance are unrealistic Afterall, they argue, humans work for long hours in environments closely interacting with each other, and it is quite easy for people to develop intimate feelings On the other hand, employers are aware of the fickle nature intimate relations can have These relationships come with no guarantee to last Often when they fail, the spurned party, hurt and feeling used and discarded, claim sexual harassment, causing the organization significant legal and financial liability

It is not clear if in the case of Udoka’s suspension, sexual harassment claims were made against him, but there is speculation the relationship had disintegrated to encroach sexual harassment claims from the female involved

Prior to the 1980’s sexual harassment (particularly of women) was not subject to legal liability. Perpetuators received only “a slap on the wrist ” However, civil rights activists saw this as workplace discrimination against women, and contrary to Equal Employment Opportunity regulations

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) defines sexual harassment as: “Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical actions,

and for barring employment or career advancement because of one ’ s gender ” Generally, in the workplace, sexual harassment is described as any incident in which someone directs unwanted sexual attention towards another

Today laws exist making acts of sexual harassment in the American workplace punishable by immediate dismissal, and the payment of significant funds to victims for damages However, these laws attract critics

It is argued workplace sexual harassment laws create a hostile environment, and a divide between female and male employees. Some insist the laws create a tense environment between the genders Incidents have occurred where partners in once cordial, intimate, workplace relationships that turned sour, unfairly accuse another of making “unwelcome,” “unwarranted” sexual advances Indeed, there are instances where employees, including managers, are terminated, having been accused by former romantic partners This is the main reason several companies prohibit romantic relations between employees

Another criticism against sexual harassment laws is they do not take into consideration workplace cultural diversities For example, male employees from the Caribbean are inclined to readily compliment, or joke with female co workers on their dress, grooming, and posture Such compliments, if overdone, can easily be construed as sexual harassment according to US workplace laws

Other critics argue sexual harassment laws are unfairly skewed in favor of women. But while the laws may have been made to protect women against workplace harassment and discrimination, with several women being victims, research indicates women are not the only victims In 2017, there were 11,717 charges of sexual harassment in the U S courts Of those charges 17 6 percent were from men, up from 11 6 percent in 2010

Despite the criticisms, sexual harassment is a serious and costly workplace infringement Victims of workplace sexual harassment usually

suffer loss of self esteem, humiliation, psychological injury, and at times damage to professional reputation and career Some victims, although winning a sexual harassment case leave the workplace rather than face potential problems because of the claims they made

Sexual harassment claims cost companies’ loss from absenteeism, lower productivity and employee morale, high employee turnover Companies risk paying high court costs and damages to alleged victims, and a blight on the company ’ s reputation in its target market

Adherence to these laws must be a focus of workplace training It is irresponsible for any business, small or large, not to focus on sexual harassment laws It is also irresponsible for all staff members, regardless of rank, not to heed these laws

The sympathy for the Celtics coach is understood, but he knew the organizational rules; signed contracts to adhere to these rules. Tempting as the physical attraction may have been, he had the responsibility of adhering to the rules, but didn’t

Trinidad teachers ordered back to classrooms

The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) has ordered its members to return to the classrooms on Monday after the government received an ex parte injunction preventing them from taking a day to “reflect” on stalled salary negotiations

“As your union president I advise that we follow the mandate of the injunction, and as law abiding citizens, we should all report for duty,” TTUTA president Antonia Tekah De Freitas said, hours after Attorney General Reginald Armour, SC told reporters the government had been granted the injunction by the Industrial Court judges after a two hour sitting

“The government was not prepared to allow that illegality to continue in light of the very clear case law and Sections 65, 67 and 69 of the Industrial Relations Act which make it clear that the teaching service is an essential service and is not permitted to engage in industrial action far more so illegal industrial action ”

Armour had described the planned action of teachers on Monday as illegal since they are deemed part of the essential services and therefore are forbidden from taking strike action

He said the court would also interpret any “sick” action taken by teachers

The government has maintained its position of negotiating a four percent wage increase for public servants, warning that calls by some trade unions for significant wage increases would lead to it having to find billions of dollars to

meet back pay and annual salaries

Last week, TTUTA staged a half day of reflection after successfully getting the majority of teachers to stay away from classes on September 5, the first day of the school year

Armour told a news conference refusal to obey the court could lead to TTUTA being decertified as the recognized union to represent the interests of teachers

Armour said TTUTA can also be fined TT$10,000 for disobeying the court order, while anyone who encourages members of an essential service to

take industrial action can be fined TT$20,000

The order restrains TTUTA from commencing and/or continuing industrial action including, “resting and reflecting ”

“It is also ordered that TTUTA is directed forthwith, through its president and executive, to instruct or direct members of the teaching service to report for duty on the 26th of September and continue as they are required to do in the normal course of their employment,” Armour said

Six people were killed, including four by police following a daring heist at a major store in La Romaine, Trinidad, late Monday

Police said two security officers attached to Allied Security Limited, were killed when the bandits fired on them after they had picked up the sales money at Pennywise Super Centre

The authorities said gunmen fired several rounds into the security van, killing the two security officers at the scene, while the other, a female, was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH)

A primary school child was also grazed on the face by a bullet during the rapid gunfire and was treated at the hospital

Police later engaged the four bandits who were killed during an exchange of gunfire A fifth suspect is in custody, while another is being sought

The authorities have not yet indicated if any of the sales money stolen was recovered

The robbery forced the store's management to close the building with shoppers and staff inside awaiting the arrival of police officers

Head of the Southern Police Division Snr Superintendent, Richard Smith, confirmed that four of the suspected bandits were killed by police inside a house

He said the bandits had abandoned their initial getaway car and robbed a passing motorist of his vehicle

Acting Commissioner of Police McDonald Jacob in a television interview said three AR 15 firearms and one pistol were recovered following the shootout with the bandits

Same Sex

Marriage fromA4

“Most of our people will vote in favor of the code, but it still has issues that our society as a whole does not understand," he said

On Monday, he celebrated approval of the measure, tweeting “Love is now the law ”

Passage “is to pay a debt to various generations of Cubans whose domestic plans had been waiting years for this law," he added “As of today, we will be a better nation ”

The measure had been approved by Cuba's Parliament, the National Assembly, after years of debate about such reforms

A major supporter of the measure was Mariela Castro, director of the National Center for Sex Education, a promoter of rights for same sex couples, daughter of former President Raul Castro and niece of his brother Fidel

But there is a strong strain of social conservatism in Cuba and several religious leaders have expressed concern or opposition to the law, worrying it could weaken nuclear families

While Cuba was officially — and often militantly — atheist for decades after the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro Raul's brother — it has become more tolerant of religions over the past quarter century That has meant a greater opening to not only the once dominant Roman Catholic Church, but also to Afro Cuban religions, protestants, and Muslims

Some of those churches took advantage of the opening in 2018 and 2019 to campaign against another plebiscite which would have rewritten the constitution in a way to allow gay marriage. Opposition was strong enough that the government at that time backed away

United States pushing for legislation to sanction Haiti's gang leaders

The Biden administration is pushing for legislation to sanction Haiti's gang leaders in the wake of an escalation of violence in the country

According to a report published by the Miami Herald, while the 77th United Nations General Assembly is underway in New York, the United States is preparing to circulate a resolution at the United Nations Security Council on Monday that will establish a new framework for sanctioning Haiti's gang leaders

The article also states that the Biden administration is not ruling out international intervention

Speaking during a recent interview, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols said gang leaders fueling Haiti's worst security crisis in decades — and those who finance and support them, including supplying firearms — “ are in the crosshairs, and their actions to destabilize Haiti will be met with international travel and financial sanctions ”

The Biden administration is hoping for swift passage of the resolution “in the coming days,” Nichols said

He said the resolution will create a United Nations framework to place sanctions on gang leaders, and those who support and facilitate and fund their activities ”

“Those sanctions would target their financial resources and ability to travel ” The Haitian government has all but lost control over security in the Caribbean nation, and U S officials say the country reached a crisis not seen since the early 1990s

According to the Miami Herald, Haiti's neighbors have called for robust action from the United States and other permanent members of the Security Council

So far, the neighboring Dominican Republic has publicly requested a return of a multinational peacekeeping force, arguing that Haiti's instability and rampant gang violence are increasingly becoming a threat to the region

This would require Haiti to go once more under what is known as Chapter 7, which is an article of the U N charter that enables the Security Council to deploy international forces in a peacekeeping mission

Florence Duperval Guillaume seeking to replace Dominican as PAHO director

Haiti has nominated Dr Florence Duperval Guillaume, a former acting prime minister and former minister of public health and population, for the position of director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)

Ministers of Health and other high level representatives from countries and territories of the Americas will meet September 26 to 30 to elect a new director to replace Dominica's Dr Carissa Etienne

Guillaume is among six candidates vying for the position with the others coming from Brazil, Panama, Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay

PAHO said the detailed curriculum vitae presented by each candidate and letters of nomination have been sent to PAHO member states, participating states and associate members

“The conference will elect the director from among the nominated candidates by secret ballot. The candidate who receives the majority of votes from member states will be elected,” it said, adding that in accordance with PAHO's Constitution, the director will serve a five year term and may be re elected once The elected person will take office on February 1, 2023 and

complete his or her term January 31, 2028

PAHO is the specialized health agency of the Inter American System and serves as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Americas This year, PAHO marks its 120th anniversary of active work in promoting health and wellbeing throughout the region

Dr Etienne was elected for a second term as the PAHO director in 2017, during the 29th Pan American Sanitary Conference She began her second five year term on February1, 2018

PAHO said its Pan American Sanitary Conference is the organization's highest

decision making body, meeting every five years to determine general policies of the organization to improve the health and well being of the population in the region

Dominica's President Charles Savarin, as well as Dr Etienne will be among the speakers on the opening day

During the week long conference, PAHO says a number of reports will be presented and discussed, including the “Strategy and Plan of Action on Psychoactive Substance Use and Public Health” and “Plan of Action to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol ”

Love Music? Then join Miami Carnival for its annual Panorama on Friday, October 7, 2022, at the Central Broward Regional Park, 3700 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill, FL., from 4:00 to 11:00 p.m.

This annual cultural musical experience is set to be a vibe The Panorama competition showcases the rhythms of the sweet sounds of pan music The steelpan was invented in the 1930s on the Caribbean island of Trinidad It is also the only instrument invented in the 20th century Therefore, it holds great historical significance in music and is appreciated worldwide

The list of renowned bands competing for prizes and the coveted title of the 2022 Miami Carnival Steelband of the Year includes Metro Steel Orchestra, Lauderhill Steel Ensemble, New Generation Branches Steel Orchestra, Elite Pan Stars Academy, and Melo Groove Steel Orchestra The steelpan is one of those instruments that brings together all the cultures and unites us

With a rhythm section in the Carnival Village kicking off the vibes for the evening to the anticipation and excitement of the epic special performances by Newtown Playboys Steel Symphony traveling in from Trinidad Tobago, as well as the Japanese Steelband WaiWai, this year ’ s Miami Carnival Panorama

is a music inspired family event not to be missed The steel drum is well rooted in Caribbean culture The sight of the instrument makes you believe you are in a tropical paradise, while the sounds bring familiar tunes to your mind

“The momentum is here We got a lot of positive feedback for Panorama’s return to Broward Miami Carnival is the place to be in October I urge anyone that’s going to be around to catch the best show in North America This is a forum where the public will see what the bands have been doing this year The Panorama is an avenue to keep steel band

culture alive,” said Bleasdell Pan is the rhythm that fuels the lifeblood that flows through the heart of Carnival,” said Dexter Bleasdell

The Panorama competition is a massive production to assemble According to Bleasdell, the Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee plans one year out from the show The bands also go through a series of preparations for the annual event The practices for the big day become more intense as the date gets closer to the competition

The Miami Carnival Panorama competition works on a point system Judges give points on the arrangement (40 points), general perfor-

mance (40 points), tone (10 points), and rhythm (10 points) The band with the highest score wins the competition

“You are guaranteed to be up on your feet dancing We developed a formula for a fun and well arranged performance It’s going to be alive and filled with energy Our band performs year round because we get booked for gigs and events We are now transitioning from stage side practices for Panorama They have been intense but fun We have a new arranger that came from Trinidad He’s an amazing young guy and keeps the whole team moving at a lively pace ” said Mary Rodriguez, President of Lauderhill Steel Ensemble

The steel drum is an instrument people of all ages can play The bands in this year ’ s Panorama have children, adults, and seniors participating in the show Newcomers to this instrument develop a sense of pride as their skills develop Child exposure to the steel drum is perfect because they can play this instrument into adulthood and become professionals

This past fall, the Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee expanded its youth arts enrichment program with its inaugural youth pan workshop series The fun and interactive music workshops introduced children to the steelpan through hands on instruction and this unique Caribbean instrument’s history and rhythmic versatility The children also had the chance to learn to play a song using the steelpan

Roberts came to national attention in 2005 with the huge hit collaboration “The Islands” alongside Bunji Garlin, which was used in promotional commercials by the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Tourism. In 2006, she sang with calypso king Machel Montano “Band of De Year” and became the youngest female Road March winner. The song brought fame to both artistes, and solidified Roberts’ grit in the Soca world, proving to critics that she was more TALENT and more WOMAN than they expected. This provided her with opportunities to travel extensively throughout the Caribbean, U S A. and Europe, where she performs to global audiences fostering cultural exchanges

Roberts takes her role on the world stage seriously, prodding change into breaking barriers. In 2017, she released a song called “Big Girl Now,” in the context of her personal role as a female soca artiste. The song serves as an up to date rejection on a male dominated culture and industry. Her ode to perseverance in “Believe in them,” adds up alongside her many hits such as, ‘Old and Grey’, ‘A Little Wine’, ‘Sweet Fuh Days’, ‘Like It Like This’, ‘Touch Me,’ ‘Into You,’ ‘Criminal Wine,’ and ‘B O D Y’ with Machel Montano, to name a few. Coach Hallgrimsson sees positives despite 3-0 loss to Argentina

Argentine legend Lionel Messi took to the field in the second half and turned a narrow 1 0 lead into a convincing 3 0 victory with two late strikes inside the last five minutes of normal time

Hallgrimsson was unhappy with the result, but pleased with the effort of his players, having had just two days to prepare for a contest against a team that had entered the contest boasting a 34 game unbeaten streak, and one of the firm favorites for the FIFA World Cup Finals slated for Qatar from November through to December

“We lost 3 0 and we are never happy to lose and 3 0 is a big number even though it's a big team we are playing, but I don't think it reflects the game on a whole and it doesn't reflect the performance of our players,” Hallgrimsson told the media in his post match analysis

I think we showed an excellent team performance for 80 minutes; we lost a little focus in possession that led to the free kick and the second goal and from that lost even more focus for the third goal and this cannot happen,” he added

The Jamaicans were pinned back during the early exchanges as the South Americans took control and dominated possession as they pressed for an early advantage

They succeeded in the 13th minute when Lautaro Martinez created an opening by easily gliding past central defender Damion Lowe before cutting the ball back for Julian Alvarez to slot home from close range

Jamaica grew in confidence and closed the time and space given to the superior technical Argentines which resulted in a more even contest

Coach Hallgrimsson says it was just a matter of the players executing the game plan which was drafted

“We kept them from creating goal scoring chances more or less up until the 80th minute Maybe after the first ten minutes, we were a little bit finding our feet, finding the shape, I think we really felt comfortable in how we played our defensive game, yes, it's hard to play against a team like Argentina with all these individual qualities but I think we grew into the game all the time,” he explained

He added: “I think after like about ten minutes we started to realize the things that we had talked about, we closed the spaces, the most dangerous spaces, so they didn't create goal scoring chances more or less until the 80th minute and when you have quality like Lionel Messi then you will convert chances when you get them

“We got moments where we could have done better with the

cross or with the final pass or with the counterattack We had possibilities to equalize the game until the 80th minute which was 2 0, so a lot to build on

“I think and I hope that people see that it was a good effort from the players, they gave it their all and you can see in the dressing room that they are really tired after this one and that's understandable when you are playing a quality team like Argentina

“In total unhappy with 3 0, but performance wise, effort wise I think the players tried their best ”

Messi entered the field at 56 minutes, and it was the maestro who doubled the lead at 86 minutes when he powered home a left footer from outside the penalty area, driving the ball low past the despairing dive of Reggae Boyz captain Andre Blake in goal

And three minutes later the little Argentine was brought down just outside the penalty box by two Jamaicans, and he picked himself up, dusted himself off before rifling a grounded free kick past Blake to seal a 35th game unbeaten for his team

It was also the 90th international goal for Messi, the most by a South American player the most by a South American player

Taylor top scored with 51 from 89 balls while captain Hayley Matthews struck 40 from 70 deliveries in her return to the top of the order, laying the foundation for the chase

Aaliyah Alleyne produced a b 27 from 34 deliveries towards the West Indies Women ended disappointing series on a high

“If you look throughout the would've improved from game to some really good positives that w out [of this series],” said Matthew

“We're really happy we were to wrap up the series with a win a hopefully this is the kind of form we can take into the T20 series coming up ”

Choosing to bat first, New Zealand Women were lifted to

168 all out in the penultimate over by Lauren Down's top score of 53, the 27 year old right hander hitting three fours and a six in a 78 ball knock at number five

The innings proved crucial after the visitors found themselves tottering on 19 for two in the sixth over Player of the Series Amelia Kerr, who punched 30 from 56 balls, put on 37 for the third wicket with Maddy Green (14) before Down controlled the middle overs

She added 28 with Kerr for the fourth wicket before putting on a further 44 for the sixth wicket with Georgia Plimmer (17) but off spinners Matthews (2 23) and Karishma Ramharack (2 28) pegged back the innings, New Zealand losing their last five wickets for 20 runs

In reply, West Indies were also in early trouble at 10 for two in the third over before Taylor and her successor Matthews combined in an 81 run, third wicket stand to st 18 runs from her previous two ur fours while Matthews counted n retired in the 31st over after 26-run, fourth wicket stand with s (14) and when two wickets fell n 117, West Indies Women were g at 117 for five in the 33rd over ver, Alleyne struck two fours in a run, sixth wicket partnership with hinelle Henry (12) to see off the hallenge from the visitors

The five match Twenty20 series started at the same venue on Wednesday

Barbados Royals crush Amazon Warriors to clinch spot in final

Barbados Royals stormed into the final of the Caribbean Premier League, making a statement of intent with an 87 run drubbing of Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first qualifier of the playoffs on Tuesday

Rahkeem Cornwall belted a fearsome 91 from 54 deliveries as Royals marched to an imposing 195 for five off their 20 overs, after being sent in at the Guyana National Stadium

And 20 year old left arm pacer Ramon Simmons then produced a superb spell of three for 17 from three overs to send the hosts crashing to 108 all out in the 18th over, only captain Shimron Hetmyer showing any resistance with 37 from 29 balls

While the result put Royals – who dominated the group stage to finish top of the standings – into the title match on Friday night, it left Amazon Warriors awaiting the winner of Tuesday’s eliminator between Jamaica Tallawahs and last year ’ s losing finalists, St Lucia Kings, for another shot at the final

Man of the Match Cornwall provided Royals with the ideal start, posting 56 for the first wicket with Kyle Mayers who struck a four and three sixes in scoring 26 from 20 deliveries

All told, Cornwall clobbered two fours and 11 sixes, reaching his half century in the 13th over off 39 balls by clearing the ropes at deep mid wicket with fast bowler Odean Smith

Cornwall finally perished in the 17th over with three figures in sight, picking out long on with left arm spinner Shakib al Hasan

Faced with a near 10 runs per over chase, Amazon Warriors buckled under the pressure and slumped to 32 for four in the sixth over

Kazim Richards
New Reggae Boyz head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson is satisfied that he and his technical staff can take a lot of positives from Jamaica's 0-3 loss to Argentina in their friendly international inside the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on Tuesday night.
Jamaica XI: Andre Blacke (c) , Amari Bell, Damion Lowe, Javain Brown (Kaheem Paris 79th minute), Adrian Mariappa, Daniel Johnson, Ravel Morrison, Bobby Reid, Leon Bailey, Shamar Nicholson (Andre Gray 69th minute), Michail Antonio (Jamal Lowe 88th minute) Former skipper Stafanie Taylor returned to form with her 38th One Day International (ODI) half century as West Indies Women avoided a clean sweep with a four-wicket win over New Zealand Women in the final ODI Sunday. Tasked with chasing 169 at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, the home side survived a few stumbles to overhaul their target in the 44th over
