Barbados sounds alarm on synthetic cannabinoids
The Barbadian population has been cautioned regarding newly identified hazardous narcotics that have surfaced on the island
Reports are that the National Council on Substance Abuse (NCSA) sounded the alarm using its Early Warning System
This move came after the Forensic Sciences Centre analyzed a previously unidentified substance, revealing the synthetic cannabinoids MDMB-4en-PINACA and 4f MDMB-Butica
According to reports, these man-made, psychoactive chemicals can either be applied to dried plant matter for smoking or be available in liquid form, suitable for vaporization in e-cigarettes and similar gadgets
During a media briefing at the Eastern Caribbean Project Soft Bible Camp in Ruby, St Philip, Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams, conveyed deep worries over the appearance of these synthetic cannabinoids in Barbados
He shared that another nation detected these substances in May 2020, which led to 11 deaths within just three months of their introduction
Abrahams emphasized the severe toxicity and rapid effects of this drug He further highlighted the lack of any recognized medicinal use for these compounds
The consumption of such substances poses considerable risks, particularly when it comes to delivering suitable medical care
Cheryl Corbin, the director of the Forensics Sciences Centre, offered more context on the substances She clarified that these compounds were dubbed cannabinoids due to their resemblance to chemicals observed in the marijuana plant

Time to lift Black America
It has been 60 years since the late Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr made his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech at the Washington Mall, and the march for civil rights in Washington DC on August 28, 1963
In his speech, Dr King aspired the time would come when the races in America would live equally, and opportunities would be abounded for everyone
Sixty years later, although there has been improvement in the civil rights of Black Americans, and in relationships between the races, Dr King's dream of racial equality is far from being realized

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Dr King's speech Black leaders organized another march and a large gathering of thousands at the Washington Mall on August 26 Several people spoke at the meeting, but the tone and topic of speeches echoed those made 60 years ago Again, speakers complained about racial hatred, unequal economic opportunities for blacks, inequality in job opportunities, access to higher education, and affordable healthcare and housing
One isn't criticizing the organizers of this commemorative march and gathering, but it's not accomplishing much if every time the Black community meets to march and protest, the focus is complaining about the disadvantages of being a marginalized race, and calling out other races, particularly white America, about the injustices and inconsistencies towards Black people
America's Black race, in the words of the late Jamaican National Hero, Marcus Garvey, needs to “Rise up!” and be more assertive in inserting itself as a formidable race
Dr King played a major role in laying a foundation for America's Black race to become a formidable race While it's great to commemorate the great man as time passes, time is passing, leaving the Black race mired in negativity and missed opportunities
American Blacks have the mental and physical ability to develop into a mighty race
Black people are making gigantic strides and accomplishments in several areas, but these
accomplishments are too few and rare So few and rare are they, that each time a Black individual reaches the pinnacle of achievement in a particular field it makes news headlines
Blacks have traditionally excelled in sports, especially professional basketball and football; But where are the Black owners in sports?
Many Black people excel in the medical field in America, as top researchers, cardiologists, oncologists, neurologists, and the list goes o n ; B u t w h e re a re t h e B l a c k ' b i g pharmaceuticals, health care systems, and health care providers?
American Blacks complain perennially about lack of access to funds for investing in, or expanding their business, but why is it so difficult to find a bank that's fully owned and operated by Black bankers?
Some Black people may likely react to these questions by saying channels to Black empowerment are blocked by the powers that be But this isn't good enough If a Black man like Magic Johnson, for example, has found a way to be now part owner of the Washington DC football team, the Washington Commanders, why can't other Black businessmen?
There's plenty of money circulating within the Black community that could be responsibly invested to strengthen the business profile of the race And there's plenty of opportunity for
Blacks to take advantage of secondary and tertiary education to advance themselves as meaningful entrepreneurs
Ironically, in the early 20th century, long before Dr King, long before the Civil Rights Act, Blacks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, collaborated to create what was then known as America's “Black Wall Street ” The community boasted a concentration of Black businesses, including Black-owned banks, and a range of attractive Black-owned residencies The town thrived, but unfortunately, hatred resulted in it being burnt to the ground in 1921 If Black people had the will and the means to build a thriving Black community in the 1920s, why can't the much larger, more wealthy, Black community now coalesce in building a stronger, more independent race?
Most likely, as American Blacks find means to assert themselves independently, they could face even greater obstacles Notwithstanding, the mission can be accomplished. Black America needs strong, fearless leaders in various sectors to focus on mobilizing the race as a great, respected race It's time Black America looked forward to realizing real independence and power and stop pining on a still unfilled dream

Kenyan delegation probes solutions to Haiti’s gang crisis
A delegation from Kenya has arrived in Haiti to evaluate the best methods to combat the ongoing issue of gang violence in the Caribbean country
The visit follows Nairobi’s proposal to command a multinational force for this task
Reports are that Haiti’s police force is severely understaffed and under-resourced, with a mere 10,000 officers serving a population of over 11 million Kenya’s involvement aims to fill this critical gap
The United States earlier this month expressed support, announcing plans to propose a United Nations Security Council resolution
This resolution would authorize Kenya to spearhead a multinational police force, contributing 1,000 officers However, the exact timeline for the resolution remains unclear
Reports are that the Kenyan delegation, comprised of 10 members, held its inaugural
meeting with Haitian officials on Monday
It is further reported that before arriving in Haiti, the Kenyan delegation met with various countries and groups in New York to align on how best to assist the country
From January 1 until August 15, more than 2,400 individuals were killed with over 950 kidnappings and another 902 injuries reported, according to U N statistics
Gangs now hold sway over an alarming 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, resulting in over 200,000 displaced persons
The Kenyan officials asserted that the countries they met with recognize the severity of Haiti’s situation and the pressing necessity to alleviate conditions that threaten the nation’s future and daily operations Kenya’s factfinding mission in Haiti concludes on Wednesday
Haiti police probe killings of parishioners who were led into gang territory
The director of Haiti’s National Police vowed Monday to hold accountable those who encouraged hundreds of parishioners to take up machetes and sticks over the weekend to try and rid a community of gang members, only to be fatally shot by them
Police Chief Frantz Elbé said the group ’ s religious leader, identified as Marcorel Zidor, participated in the protest Saturday and was accompanied by unidentified people clad in olive green carrying assault rifles as they and the parishioners marched toward the community of Canaan
Elbé said the group drew gunfire from gang members, and that “multiple” people were killed and several kidnapped, though he did not provide numbers
He said police were trying to recover the
bodies of those killed in Canaan, a community established north of the capital by survivors of the country’s devastating 2010 earthquake The community is controlled by a powerful gang whose leader goes only by “Jeff,” and who is an ally of another gang known as “Five Seconds ”
Police said in a statement that they had tried to convince the religious group to stop their plan “to avoid a carnage by criminals who have an arsenal of war ” Elbé noted that the group had not notified police about the protest as required, and that officers were unable to halt the crowd partly because it had split up into two groups
“Police did everything to stop them,” he said at a news conference, calling the event a “tragedy ”
Zidor, the pastor, could not be immediately
reached for comment An Associated Press team visited the church on Monday, but its big metal gates were closed, and no one responded to requests for entry
Tranquil Florant, a 32-year-old homeopathic doctor who is a member of the church, told the AP that the pastor announced plans for the weekend march on Thursday during an allnight prayer
“This was really a crazy idea,” Florant said, adding that he didn’t participate “People have to make good judgements ”
He arrived Monday at the church after hearing that families of victims were going to gather there, but he found no such gatherings Shooting broke out shortly afterward, scattering people in the area
Elbé stressed that police are trying to
“neutralize” gangs, which are estimated to control up to 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince
“These gangs are burning people’s houses and creating panic But we are fighting night and day to stop them and push them back,” he said
From Jan 1 until Aug 15, more than 2,400 people in Haiti were reported killed, more than 950 kidnapped and another 902 injured, according to the United Nations
In addition, more than 300 people have been killed by a violent civilian movement known as “bwa kale” that began in April and targets suspected gang members
Trinidad and Tobago achieved its long-awaited independence from the dominion of Great Britain on the historic date of August 31, 1962
The transition was symbolized at the stroke of midnight on August 30, 1962, as the Union Jack, the emblem of British authority, was gracefully lowered In its place, for the very first time, the vibrant Trinidad and Tobago flag ascended, an emblem of newfound sovereignty The jubilant occasion was accompanied by the resonating toll of bells and the triumphant blare of sirens, resounding to announce the birth of this nascent autonomous nation This inaugural Independence Day was not just a fleeting moment; it was a jubilant culmination of over a week's worth of festivities and events, spanning from August 28 to September 5, 1962 (For a comprehensive view, refer to the Independence Celebrations, 1962 - Programmes and Events) The international stage bore witness to the presence of esteemed dignitaries, among them Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, the Queen's representative, who conveyed Queen Elizabeth II's message, formalizing the relinquishment of her dominion
Present-day Celebrations of Independence
In the contemporary context, Independence Day is observed through resplendent military-style parades held at two significant locales: the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain and Scarborough in Tobago
The Trinidad parade is meticulously reviewed by the Head of State, a role that was vested in the Governor General from 1962 to 1976 – a post that represented the Queen's authority in Trinidad and Tobago Post-
1976, with Trinidad and Tobago assuming the mantle of a Republic, this mantle transitioned to the President On the parallel stage, the leadership of the Tobago parade is assumed by the Chief Secretary, the authoritative figure of the Tobago House of Assembly Following the official proceedings at the parade venues, the contingent formations march exuberantly through the thoroughfares, accompanied by the pulsating rhythms of live music performed by various military bands, including those of the Police, Fire, and Prison departments Along the parade route, enthusiastic onlookers create an atmosphere akin to the vibrancy of a carnival celebration
As the sun sets, the evening ushers in the presentation of National Awards in an illustrious ceremony held at the President's House Instituted in 1969, these distinguished accolades serve to honor the remarkable accomplishments of Trinidad and Tobago's citizens across diverse domains
The crescendo of this day of jubilation culminates with the illumination of the night sky, set ablaze by breathtaking fireworks displays at two key locales: the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain and the Port Authority Compound in Scarborough, Tobago
From early evening hours, a throng of individuals congregates, each strategically positioning themselves for an optimal view of these awe-inspiring spectacles

Has World Athletics just ignored gender equality in the 100m sprints?
Gender equality in sports continues to be a widely discussed topic It is important because it promotes fairness, and in its absence discrimination and injustice thrive
Simply put, everyone deserves the same opportunity to succeed, and genuine sports gender equality gives equal opportunities for men and women to compete
A main obstacle in gender equality in sports is insufficient funding, as in most cases men ’ s disciplines are the ones to receive the bulk of sponsorship and TV rights fees
Most businesses are unwilling to lend financial support to women ’ s sports, though others do so more out of a moral obligation and political correctness rather than for investment opportunities
With that being said, track and field athletics is one of the sporting disciplines that has progressed to equal pay at an event like the World Athletics Championships currently being held inside the National Athletics Centre in Budapest
But gender equality is far more than just equal pay It’s the total treatment of all the athletes
This network couldn’t help but notice the vast differences in the timetables for the men ’ s and women ’ s 100m races, especially from the semi-finals to the finals
The timetable for the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 shows the men ’ s semi-finals being contested at 16:35 on Sunday, with the final being run at 19:10, two hours and 35 minutes later
The first of the women ’ s semi-finals was run at 20:35 on Monday, with the final being run at 21:50 on the same day, a mere one hour and 15 minutes later
That is one hour and 20 minutes more recovery time for the men Two times what was allocated to the women What could have been the rationale for this scheduling debacle?
In both cases of the men ’ s and women ’ s, the qualifiers from the third semi-finals would have even less time to recover for the final But in this particularly bizarre case, these women would have less than an hour to recover for the final
Why this alarming disparity between the two at this 19th edition of the World Athletics Championships? The athletes are the most important assets in these events because without them there would be no product to market and sell for millions of dollars
Why have the women been treated so inhumanely at this meet with barely an hour to recover for the most explosive event?
Fair Play and Equal Opportunities
A brief research over the past couple of
World Championships has shown that no other edition since 1915 has had such a short recovery time for the women Probably none ever in the 40 year of the event
In the last edition at Oregon 22, the first of the men ’ s semis was run at 18:00 on Saturday, July 16 with the final run at 19:50, an hour and 50 minutes later
For the women, the first of their semi-finals was run at 17:33 on Sunday, July 17 with the final run at 19:50, two hours and 17 minutes later
At the Doha 2019 edition, the first of the men ’ s 100m semis was run at 18:45 on Saturday, September 28, with the final contested at 22:15, three hours later
For the women, the first of the semis was run at 21:20 on Sunday, September, with the
final being run at 23:20, two hours later World Athletics Championships London 2017 saw the first of the men ’ s semis being run at 18:05 on August 5, with the final sent off at 20:45, some two hours and 40 minutes later
The women ’ s equivalent had the first of the semis run at 18:10 on August 6, with the final sent off at 20:50, two hours and 40 minutes later
The 15th World Athletics Championships in China 2015 had the men ’ s first semi-final being run off at 19:10 on August 23, with the final going off at 21:15, two hours and five minutes later
The women ’ s first semi-final was sent off at 19:40 on August 24, with the final sent off at 21:35, an hour and 55 minutes later
None had a recovery time difference between the genders as wide as the one the world witnessed on Monday, with the ladies being the unfortunate victims
The organisers of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 need to provide an explanation, as anything less could be seen as another unnecessary obstacle in the fight against gender inequality
