Jamaican govt urges US travelers to fly through Ian Fleming Airport
With preparations being made for the Ian Fleming Airport in Boscobel, St Mary, to welcome commercial flights, the Jamaican government is urging travelers from the United States to make use of the new route
Last Thursday, American Airlines conducted a test flight to the airport ahead of its scheduled service from Miami starting next month
“Today’s a historic day, it’s a wonderful day,” said St Mary Western Member of Parliament Robert Montague after the aircraft completed a number of landings and take-offs at the former Boscobel aerodrome
He also said that the American Airlines team “walked through the facilities, they experienced the immigration and customs, they looked at the baggage handling service, the facilities for the passengers and we passed
with flying colors ”
“I am proud, I am happy I know the people of Boscobel, the people of St Mary, and by extension, the people of Jamaica are very happy,” added Montague
He urged travelers to Jamaica, particularly those in the United States, to make use of the airport
“We want to urge all Jamaicans, here and overseas, who are planning to travel into the Miami, Fort Lauderdale area to fly through Ian Fleming in Boscobel, St Mary,” he said
Ian Fleming International Airport is located 20 minutes from Ocho Rios
As of February 24, American Airlines will operate twice weekly with an Embraer 175 aircraft with a capacity for 76 passengers from Miami
Montague said that there were days when
people did not share the dream, which he had strongly advocated and which received greater support from Sandals Resorts International founder Gordon “Butch” Stewart as well as Transport Minister Daryl Vaz and his predecessor Audley Shaw
“Persons even described the facility as a white elephant,” Montague said of the airport
“It is now going to be a major economic driver I am only saddened that Mr Dudley Beek is not here to witness it, he shared the vision The honorable Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, who was the first person who called me, saying he is going to ensure that American Airlines, through American Eagle, lands here at Boscobel, and Mr Chris Blackwell, who also shared the vision, he’s also very happy ”
The new commercial flights to Ian Fleming Aiport are expected to ease wait times for
travelers at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston or Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, as well as provide an economic boost to St Mary
Former Jamaican MP Jolyan Silvera slapped with gun charge in wife’s murder case
Former Jamaican member of Parliament Jolyan Silvera also faces a gun charge in relation to the murder case of his wife, Melissa
The Judiciary of Jamaica revealed that Silvera is being charged with the offense of using a firearm to commit a felony, along with murder
The revelation was made following backlash over the presiding judge’s decision to bar the media and family members from being present for his first court appearance last week
The judiciary, in a statement released today, indicated that it has long been established that cases before the Circuit Court Division of the Gun Court are held behind closed doors to protect relevant parties such as witnesses
The Gun Court Act states that “In the interest of public safety or public order, no person shall be present at any sitting of the Court except – (a) members and officers of the Court and any constable or other security personnel required by the Court; (b) parties to the case before the Court, their attorneys, and witnesses giving or having given their evidence, and other persons directly concerned with the case ”
The former St Mary Western representative for the People’s National Party will next appear in court on February 8
Following his first court appearance on Thursday, Silvera’s defence attorney King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie spoke to the media
Champagnie noted that his client is maintaining his innocence
“He has maintained his position of innocence from day one I am not saying that he is, because I understand that there is a report to that effect No lawyer should ever really say that because if you so are certain, then you would be a witness,” he said
Melissa Silvera was initially reported to have died in her sleep on November 10, 2023, at the couple’s residence in Stony Hill, St Andrew But the police later upgraded their probe to a murder investigation after her post-mortem examination revealed she was shot at least three times

Kenyan President says Haiti mission to proceed despite court ruling
A Kenyan opposition leader, Ekuru Aukot, has accused President William Ruto of planning to defy a court ruling that deemed the deployment of police to Haiti illegal
Aukot, who successfully challenged the planned deployment in court last week, argues that the president is only authorized to deploy the army, not the police President Ruto, however, expressed on Tuesday that the mission could proceed "as soon as next week" if all necessary paperwork was completed to meet the court's demands
In November, the Kenyan parliament ratified the deployment of 1,000 officers to lead a multinational force in Haiti, where gangs are seeking to expand their territorial control Despite this, a judge ruled last week that Kenya's National Security Council, led by the president, lacks the authority to deploy regular police outside the country The court emphasized that the council can only deploy the military for peacekeeping missions like Haiti, and there must be a reciprocal agreement between the involved countries before
"The mission could proceed as soon as next week. It is on course. The mission is a bigger calling to humanity"
President William Ruto
deployment Justice Chacha Mwita, delivering the ruling, praised Kenya's offer to deploy police to Haiti but stressed the importance of carrying
out such missions within the bounds of the law President Ruto, speaking at the ItalyAfrica summit in Rome, expressed confidence that a request satisfying the court's demands
would be received soon, stating, "The mission is on course The mission is a bigger calling to humanity " Kenya's foreign ministry official, Korir Sing'oei, argued that the deployment would not be unconstitutional if conducted under a bilateral reciprocal arrangement However, Aukot countered, stating that the deployment requires more than just a bilateral agreement between the two countries Aukot accused the foreign affairs official of misleading the president Ruto emphasized during the interview that it was a police, not a military operation The Kenyan government has announced its intention to appeal against the court ruling, with the US expressing support for Kenya's decision to challenge it. However, the Kenyan opposition has warned the US against interfering in the country's internal affairs
It remains uncertain when the Kenyan government will launch the appeal and whether other countries pledging support for the multinational mission, such as the Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda, and the US with a $200 million pledge, would consider proceeding independently. A UN envoy highlighted last week that gang violence in Haiti had reached a "critical point," with nearly 5,000 reported deaths last year
US Coast Guard rescues 33 Haitian migrants from sinking vessel near Cap-Haitien

It is reported that 33 people were brought aboard the Dependable and transferred to Haitian authorities in good health on Tuesday
The US Coast Guard also reported that it collaborated with Puerto Rico Police air and surface crews in rescuing three boaters from a capsized vessel just off Desecheo Island, Puerto Rico, on Tuesday
UN Special Rep. warns of escalating crisis in Haiti
T h e U n i t e d N a t i o n s S p e c i a l Representative to Haiti, Maria Isabel Salvador, has declared that the nation’s crisis has reached an alarming and critical point
The dire assessment came during her presentation of the latest report from the UN political office in Haiti to the UN Security Council
Salvador’s report paints a grim picture of the escalating violence plaguing the Caribbean nation
The data reveals that more than 8,400 individuals fell victim to gang-related violence in Haiti last year alone
This figure represents 122 percent increase compared to 2022
Approximately 83 percent of the unprecedented surge in killings and injuries occurred within the city limits However, the violence has also spread to Artibonite, the largest of Haiti’s 10 departments
Salvador also noted that since her briefing in October last year, at least 75 individuals have lost their lives due to civilian vigilante movements as defence against the gangs
A Genuine Jamaican Legend
The premiere of the movie "One Love," portraying the life and music of Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley, left a lasting impression not only because of the presence of celebrities like Britain's Prince Harry and Meghan but because it underscored that Marley is not just the epitome of Jamaican legends but also a true international music legend
Born in St Ann to a black Jamaican mother and abandoned by his white Irish father, Marley grew up in a Kingston ghetto, where he first discovered and honed his musical talents Despite being frowned upon by Jamaica's upper class, his legacy extends far beyond the shores of Jamaica He stands shoulder to shoulder with iconic American musicians like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, and the British sensation, The Beatles
It's predictable that for years to come, Bob Marley's name will be celebrated as people worldwide continue to listen to his music As they do, not only will his legend resonate, but so will the genre of reggae music and the Jamaican nation
The choice of launching the movie on February 14, amidst Reggae Month and a few days after the 79th anniversary of Marley's birth on February 6, is fitting
While there are many musicians and entertainers who have gained more recognition after their passing, few compare to Bob Marley Over 33 years since the music legend's passing, his music has never been more widespread, popular, and respected worldwide
Marley wasn't the sole reggae musician of his time, but alongside his band, The Wailers, he catapulted the reggae genre onto the global stage, embodying its spirit and spreading it globally with a string of hit songs and albums
Marley's contributions to reggae are indisputable, and his impact on the music industry is astounding, with many contemporary artists acknowledging him as a major source of inspiration. Moreover, his lyrics often convey a message of social upliftment, often referred to as "positive vibrations " In fact, many of his song lyrics have taken on a prophetic
status
Beyond music, Marley's influence extended to political and social causes Through his music, he championed the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, notably in his song "War," which featured a speech by Haile Selassie, the Ethiopian Emperor and spiritual leader of the Rastafarian faith, to which Marley belonged. The song calls for equality regardless of race or class, a message that remains relevant as the world grapples with ongoing conflicts
Marley used his music to advocate for social and political change and was critical of political ideologies and what he referred to as the "scisms" of politicians His efforts earned him adoration, especially in Africa, where he was considered a heroic figure In 1980, he received
the United Nations Medal of Peace for his courageous appeals for global justice and peace during times of political unrest, not just in Jamaica but worldwide
Marley achieved numerous accolades during his lifetime, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and the sale of over 22 million records, making him the first international superstar from a third-world country He was also honored with Jamaica's Order of Merit shortly before succumbing to cancer on May 11, 1981
Even after his passing, Marley's commitment to fighting oppression continues through The Bob Marley Foundation, established in his memory by his family The Foundation is dedicated to aiding people and organizations in developing nations in addressing the causes Marley passionately articulated through his music
However, many Jamaicans believe that Marley deserves more than the Order of Merit They are increasingly urging the government to bestow upon him the nation's highest honor, National Hero of Jamaica
Currently, Jamaica has seven National Heroes, but no Jamaican has received this honor since 1982 A 2022 survey in Jamaica revealed that approximately 40 percent of Jamaicans support designating Marley as a National Hero, alongside popular folklorist Louise "Miss Lou" Bennett
The current government has established a committee to define the criteria for national hero status and consider recommendations, including Bob Marley, for this esteemed recognition
Jamaicans both at home and abroad are growing impatient. It's arguable that no Jamaican has brought as much positive recognition to one of Jamaica's most cherished assets, reggae music, and to Jamaica itself as Robert Nesta Marley What more criteria is needed to designate him a National Hero? He is a Jamaican legend whose legacy will endure through the ages

Cannabis and CBD could help relieve Alzheimer’s symptoms
Is it conceivable that marijuana, a substance known for its potential to induce memory loss and impaired cognitive abilities, might provide benefits for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and various forms of dementia?
Several research articles and scientific literature reviews suggest the possibilities, including a 2021 review published in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) that explores the utilization of cannabis and cannabidiols in the treatment of Alzheimer’s patients
“The use of marijuana and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) has demonstrated significant therapeutic potential in addressing neuronal inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases like AD [Alzheimer’s disease],” an excerpt from the review states
Dr Kyron Tamar, a qualified medical marijuana physician practicing in the Central Florida cities of Brooksville and Clermont, underscores the established anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis
“Inflammation is a basis for all diseases,” Dr. Tamar states, noting the efficacy of cannabis in suppressing inflammation “Cannabis is AAARP anti-aging, antiinflammatory, antioxidants, and restorative and protective,” he said
Dr Tamar is an enthusiastic proponent of medical cannabis and cannabidiol (CBD) to not only help relieve symptoms of Alzheimer’s, such as anxiety, sleeplessness and agitated behavior, but also to prevent the onset of the disease
“Let me say this, CBD protects the brain
“You need more CBD during the day so you can focus, concentrate, do daily activities, operate machinery, go to school, study, get good grades, be a better mother and father, be a better person, because CBD enhances the efficacy of the mitochondria, the powerhouse of every
cell in our body. – Dr. Kyron Tamar
It’s neuroprotective,” he says, adding that taking CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant, helps improve mental acuity
“You need more CBD during the day so you can focus, concentrate, do daily activities, operate machinery, go to school, study, get good grades, be a better mother and father, be a better person, because CBD enhances the efficacy of the mitochondria, the powerhouse of every cell in our body,” he explains
Qualifying conditions
Alzheimer’s disease is not named as a qualifying condition by the Florida Department of Health’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) However, OMMU’s website states “medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to those listed” are treatable by a qualified physician
Alzheimer’s shares similarities with the
qualifying conditions Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Dr Tamar says
“If you have anything related to anxiety, depression, sleep, pain, and appetite issues, you will qualify,” he adds
Highlighting the potential dangers of selfmedicating with street-bought marijuana, Dr Tamar warns against the uncertainty of THC levels and the possibility of contamination with harmful substances, including the synthetic opioid fentanyl
With Alzheimer’s patients being unlikely to be able to take care of themselves, the responsibility of administering recommended medical marijuana treatments would fall on their caregivers
Such an undertaking is regulated by Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use, which lists caregiver requirements at www knowthefactsmmj com/caregiver-faq
“They need socialization, and they need to eat right,” emphasizes Dr Tamar, who promotes the MIND and Mediterranean diets, which stress eating whole grains, beans, poultry, fish, vegetables and fruits He also says a healthy diet and the use of CBD can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s later in life
