“Sheila was a fierce advocate and legislator, who always rose for the causes and communities close to her heart She was a mentor to me, as she was to many others, and a visionary who was relentless in her pursuit of justice,” said Clarke

Holness added that Jackson Lee led the way for the inclusion of all communities, but especially the black community, to partake in the economic life of the United States

Jackson Lee was born on January 12, 1950, in Queens, New York Her grandparents

Former BVI Premier Andrew Fahie denies leadership role in drug conspiracy

Andrew Fahie, the former Premier of the British Virgin Islands, has denied playing a leading role in the drug conspiracy for which he was convicted earlier this year

Fahie was found guilty in February 2024 on charges of conspiracy to import cocaine, money laundering, and foreign travel in aid of racketeering

Last week, in a filing in the Southern District of Florida, Fahie’s legal team responded to the prosecution’s objections to the Pre-sentence Investigation Report, which suggested enhancements in his sentencing based on Fahie’s alleged role as a leader in his criminal activities

The prosecution contended that the former Premier was “ an organizer or leader of a criminal activity that involved five or more participants or was otherwise extensive ”

However, Fahie’s lawyers argued that the evidence presented during the trial does not support the prosecution’s claim

They maintain that Fahie was not the driving force behind the conspiracy, emphasizing that the lead roles were played by undercover agents and informants controlled by the U S government The scheme, they claim, was orchestrated and manipulated to trap Fahie

The response also highlighted key points to counter the prosecution’s stance, pointing out inconsistencies in the prosecution’s

characterization of Fahie’s involvement and authority within the conspiracy

For instance, during the trial, the prosecution’s own evidence suggested that Fahie’s actions were primarily directed or influenced by other participants, such as Oleanvine Maynard and Roxanne Sylvester, who were allegedly deeply involved in the

planning and execution phases of the operations

Fahie’s team also refuted the claim that he exercised decision-making authority over the criminal operations

They argued that the meetings and decisions were significantly steered by others within the conspiracy, particularly the

confidential source (CS) who was central to the prosecution’s case

The filing also clarified that Fahie’s role in the alleged conspiracy was not as an organizer but was misconstrued and overstated by the prosecution

The response dismissed the notion that Fahie was responsible for recruiting other participants, including claims that he directed high-ranking Customs officials

They described these allegations as lacking substantive evidence and context, pointing out that much of the U S government’s narrative was built around out-of-context snippets from intercepted communications

The legal document also countered additional sentencing enhancements related to Fahie’s alleged abuse of trust and leadership in the conspiracy His attorneys argued that these enhancements constitute ‘double counting’, which they claimed are based on the same aspects of his conduct

Fahie, 53, was convicted of cocaine smuggling and money laundering charges on February 8, 2024

He had been arrested on April 28, 2022, along with the BVI’s Ports Authority managing director, Oleanvine Pickering Maynard, who pleaded guilty and was recently sentenced to nine years in prison

The former BVI premier faces the possibility of life in prison and a US$10 million fine, but his lawyers are asking the judge to sentence him to a 10-year jail term

Jamaican banks end controversial dormant account fees practice

Jamaican banks will no longer apply fees to dormant saving accounts ending a practice that has been controversial for decades

Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) Deputy Governor Jide Lewis says that the banks have moved away from using manual processes to monitor dormant accounts and have introduced technology to carry out the task He said the technology has been verified by the BOJ

In addition, the banks have introduced a transaction-monitoring system to allow senior staff members to detect and identify employees who try to access dormant accounts

Anthony Hylton at a meeting with the Economy and Production Committee of Parliament said he was pleased with the news, noting that he had been advised by a senior banking official in the past that it was bank

employees who posed a risk to dormant accounts

“My concern leading up to now has been that if members of staff were the ones accessing these accounts, then the responsibility must devolve on the banks to address this situation,” the opposition lawmaker said

However, Lewis said when a bank employee is involved in internal fraud, there are actions that the institution will take in addition to the intervention of the police

He said that banks are also required to report internal fraud to the BOJ

But Hylton said where depositors’ savings are at risk and they suffer loss as a result of the actions of bank employees, the account holder should be able to recover losses through civil action in the courts

appreciation to the Government of the United States of America for its generous donation of 20,000 rapid diagnostic kits These kits will significantly enhance our capacity to promptly and precisely diagnose malaria in many rural communities across Guyana and will safeguard the well-being of our citizens We are thankful for the ongoing partnership, which has assisted Guyana tremendously over the years ”

The donated kits are intended for use in interior regions, which account for more than 95 percent of Guyana’s cases Since 2016, the US government has supported Guyana’s efforts to combat the disease through its regional malaria program in collaboration with partners like PAHO and the USAID

Breakthrough Action team

Key achievements of this ongoing collaboration include mapping high malaria incidence areas, distributing 3,000 bed nets to vulnerable populations, improving malaria management in Regions 7 and 8, and facilitating a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Health, other government entities, and mining associations Malaria, a life-threatening disease transmitted to humans by infected Anopheles mosquitoes, remains a significant health challenge in Guyana This recent donation is a crucial step toward the country’s goal of eliminating the disease by 2030

Archbishop of Canterbury apologizes to Jamaicans for the Church of England’s involvement in slavery

The Archbishop of Canterbury apologized to the people of Jamaica for the Church of England’s participation in slavery. The Right Honorable Justin Welby, was the guest preacher at the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands held on Sunday

The celebratory church service was held at the National Arena in St Andrew and was attended by hundreds of people, including dignitaries and high-ranking members of the church

It was Welby’s opinion, that “the church sinned and consumed the sheep”

“I cannot speak for the Government of the United Kingdom but I can speak from my own heart and represent what we say now in England We are deeply, deeply, deeply sorry We sinned against your ancestors I would give anything that that can be reversed, but it cannot,” Welby said, pointing out that the church began its transformation from loving power to begin loving people, in the 19th century

Webly said though the apology is long overdue it is better late than never “We are now responsible to God to do right, and to repent and say sorry That must involve reversing direction and going in a different way Our Saviour and His ever-present love led the church into seeking to do right Too late, but better late than never ”

He said he knows that parts of the Church of England, and even one of the archbishops in the 18th century, owned slaves

“The shepherd, as Ezekiel said, consumed the flock It is no wonder the Church of England has suffered judgement, for what worse thing could be done? Even for those in the church who did not actively participate in chattel enslavement, the silence of the church was collusion, an agreement with slavery,” he said, adding that there were bishops who truly profited from slavery

An archbishop of Canterbury in the 18th century approved payments for the purchase of enslaved people for two sugar

plantations in Barbados, documents seen by the Observer have revealed

Thomas Secker agreed to reimburse a payment for £1,093 for the purchase of enslaved people on the Codrington Plantations, as well as hiring enslaved people from a third party It was stated the measures were “calculated for the future lasting advantages of the estates”

The papers are among a cache of documents found in the archives of Lambeth Palace Library which detail the direct links between the Church of England and chattel slavery on plantations owned by its missionary arm, The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG)

At least 40 migrants dead after boat caught on re in Haiti

The United Nations confirmed on Friday that at least 40 migrants lost their lives when a boat they were traveling in caught fire off the coast of Cap-Haïtien in Haiti

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, revealed during a daily briefing that the boat had departed from Labadee last Wednesday, carrying over 80 people en route to the Turks and Caicos Islands, a journey of approximately 250 kilometers

“We have sad news from the north of Haiti Colleagues from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) say that at least 40 migrants have died, and several others were injured, after a boat they were traveling in caught fire off Cap Haitien,” Haq announced

“Forty-one surviving migrants who were aboard were rescued by the Haitian Coast Guard and are currently receiving medical care, food, water, and psychosocial support provided by IOM, in support of the national authorities Eleven migrants were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, including burns,” he added

Grégoire Goodstein, Head of IOM in Haiti, emphasized the tragic event’s significance, stating it underscores the crucial need for safe and legal pathways for migration

The IOM reported that more than 86,000 migrants have been forcibly returned to Haiti by neighboring countries this year

In March alone, despite a surge in violence and the closure of airports throughout the country, forced returns increased by 46 percent, reaching 13,000 people

Since February 29, the coastguard in the north has observed an increase in the number of attempts and departures by boat Coastguards from countries in the region, including the United States, the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos islands, and Jamaica, have also reported a growing number of boats originating from Haiti being intercepted at

Kamala Harris has become the cornerstone

It took a while—too long a while—for

President Joe Biden to declare he would no longer seek reelection, but in tribute to him, he ultimately made the patriotic decision to do so

Make no mistake about it, Biden is touted as one of the best presidents in American history He is said to have accomplished more in his first and only term than many presidents But the fact is that his accomplishments came at a much older age than other presidents Age caught up with him, making it unlikely he would have won a second term in office A decisive loss would most certainly have ruined his positive legacy as president By making the difficult decision not to seek reelection, his legacy has become potentially stronger

With Biden removing himself as the Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, it seems increasingly likely that Vice President Kamala Harris will be the party's candidate

Although she has not been formally nominated, in the immediate hours following Biden's decision, there was a groundswell of support from top Democrats, led by Biden himself, who endorsed her as the party's presidential candidate This support is also coming from the Democratic Party's grassroots, which contributed over $100 million to Harris' potential presidential campaign within some 36 hours

Kamala Harris's tenure as Biden's vice president, if one makes a judgment based on media coverage, is generally considered unremarkable Up to a few months ago, she was not in any way considered a possible candidate for president, although Biden intended to keep her as his vice-presidential running mate

But in recent months, she has appeared to have grown more comfortable and confident in her role as VP and has been a strong advocate for issues like women's reproductive rights She has been traveling across the country as an increasingly strong and respected political voice

Ever since Biden's incredibly poor debate performance last month, there have been calls for Harris to replace him as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate Now that Biden has dropped his reelection bid, a coalition has rapidly built around her candidacy

Harris is a multi-demographic presidential candidate She's the daughter of immigrants, a woman, Black, Caribbean-American, AsianAmerican, middle-class, and middle-aged.

Some of these demographics, particularly her gender and race, are considered by some as liabilities to her being elected president Voices across the country, perhaps across the world, are saying, “America will never elect a black woman as president ” This seems like déjà vu, as in 2007, many voices also said America would never elect a Black man for president when Barack Obama entered the presidential race Well, America did elect a Black man as president, not once but twice

Some naysayers also point to Harris' failed 2020 presidential bid, prior to her being selected by Biden as his VP running mate But she has gained exceptional experience in her tenure as VP, and coupled with her past experiences as a US Senator and Attorney General of California, she is surely qualified to be president The growing excitement among the Democratic Party base with Harris likely to be the party's presidential nominee has been pleasantly surprising A party that appeared so divided as it agonized over whether Biden should relinquish his presidential bid has, in record time, seemed to be uniting around Kamala Harris

Amazingly, this same woman who many were criticizing as a colorless, ineffective VP is now the main hope of the Democratic Party retaining possession of the White House in November The scenario surrounding Harris is reminiscent of this Biblical verse, “The stone the builders refused has become the cornerstone ” Kamala Harris has emerged as the cornerstone

on which the Democratic Party intends to occupy the White House for the next eight years

Unlike Biden's presidential candidacy, Harris is more likely to appeal to America's youth, women, African Americans, Hispanics, and independents, and of course, Caribbean American voters Interestingly, the anticipated Caribbean American voter turnout for Harris is poised to make the Caribbean American bloc a very important factor in states like Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland. But hopefully, the majority of America will vote for Harris for the policies she represents to improve their lives, and not based on her race or gender

Every day in American politics seems like a year So much has happened over the last month, it spins one's head The 104 days leading to the presidential elections on November 5 will seem like an eternity with surprising and unexpected events There'll also be days over which Democrats will be working and hoping when the votes are finally tallied after November 5, they will have made Kamala Harris, daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, America's first Black woman president-elect

When you think of Jamaican cuisine, what often comes to mind are the most talked about ackee and saltfish, curry chicken, stew peas, escovitch fish and of course its famous jerk dishes. But a well-known delight th deserves as much praise as their culina counterparts is of course, Oxtail.

Oxtail with broad beans, a once-weekly stapl become a rare treat due to its rising cost This de satisfying stew, with its rich and flavorful gravy, evo fond memories of bowls filled with butter bean spinners, and meaty oxtails The pleasure of savorin marrow from the bone is incomparable Traditionally served over white rice or rice and peas, accompanied by avocado, ripe plantain, and coleslaw, this meal is meant to be savored slowly

A Culinary Tradition Born from Necessity

The origins of Jamaican oxtail stew trace back to colonial times when enslaved Africans on plant ti made do with cheaper cuts of meat Given m amounts of protein, they ingeniously transform pig’s tail, cow foot, chicken foot, tongue, an organs into flavorful dishes Beef, particularly fresh beef, was rare due to limited cattle farming and the tropical climate's impact on meat preservation Plantation workers, left with less desirable parts of slaughtered animals, would cure, pickle, preserve, or stew these cuts, creating communal feasts from what was available

This tradition evolved into combining bone-in protein with vegetables, aromatics, ccotch bonnet pepper, starch (like dumplings or root vegetables), and beans These hearty on pot stews, such as oxtail, became integra

Jamaican cuisine. Despite the popularity of dishes like curry goat and jerk chicken, oxtail holds a special place, often enjoyed at home rather than in restaurants, due to its high price and slow-cooked preparation

ansforming Tough Meat into nder Delight

To turn tough oxtail into tender, flavorful morsels, a slow ise is essential This process breaks down collagen and nective tissue, resulting in a gelatin-rich broth You must t sear the oxtail to develop a deep, roasted flavor Brown e meat in batches to avoid steaming and ensure a proper ar Then, remove excess marinade before searing and manage the heat to prevent scorching The pt is then deglazed with water to incorporate flavorful browned bits into the braising liquid

Simmer the aromatics and meat gently for nearly three hours, ensuring the liquid just covers the meat Regularly monitor the pot to maintain the right temperature and liquid level

An Old Technique Revived

A fascinating technique taught by a longtime cook involves covering the meat with ice instead of water As the ice melts and evaporates, more ice is added This method helps regulate the cooking temperature over a live e or high, hard-to-regulate heat, ensuring a gentle simmer er than a vigorous boil that could toughen the meat This ique mimics modern braising at a controlled temperature, th an inconsistent heat source tender oxtail and rich broth, focus on adding spinners gs) and beans Spinners, though optional, add heartiness ken the stew with their starch Shape the dumplings from e flour, water, and salt dough, letting it rest before rolling to relax the gluten Add the dumplings and beans in the final 30 minutes of cooking to ensure they are tender without disintegrating

The result is a thick, flavorful gravy and tender oxtail a soulsatisfying meal worth the effort Enjoy this rich legacy of Jamaican cuisine, a testament to resourcefulness and tradition

In a social media post endorsing Harris, Biden wrote, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President And it's been the best decision I've made Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year Democrats — it's time to come together and beat Trump Let's do this ”

Top Democrats swiftly rallied behind Harris, with prominent elected officials, party leaders, and political organizations endorsing her candidacy Her campaign set a new 24-hour record for presidential donations on Monday

By Monday evening, state delegations, including Texas and Harris's home state of California, met to confirm their support According to the AP tally, Harris secured the backing of at least 2,579 delegates, surpassing the 1,976 needed to win on the first ballot No other candidate was mentioned by delegates contacted by the AP

Despite this, the AP has not yet called Harris the presumptive nominee, as convention delegates are still free to vote for their preferred candidate during the convention in August or in a potential virtual roll call ahead of the gathering in Chicago

The AP tally is based on interviews with individual delegates, public statements from state parties, and endorsements from individual delegates

Securing the nomination is just the beginning of a significant political journey for Harris Following Biden's announcement on Sunday, Harris must now choose a running mate and shift a massive political operation initially built for Biden's reelection to support her own candidacy

On Sunday afternoon, Biden's campaign officially transitioned to “Harris for President,” reflecting her takeover of his political operation, which includes over 1,000 staffers and a war chest nearing $96 million as of late June

Harris's campaign reported raising an additional $81 million within the first 24 hours after Biden's endorsement, a presidential fundraising record, with contributions from more than 888,000 donors On Tuesday, she surpassed the $100 million mark, with donations from more than 1 1 million entities, including 62% first-time donors, according to the campaign

Interest in Harris's campaign surged following the announcement, with over 28,000 new volunteers registering, a rate more than 100 times the average from Biden's previous campaign, underscoring the enthusiasm behind Harris

If elected, Harris would make history as the first woman, first Caribbean-American, and the first person of South Asian descent to become President of the United States Her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who died in 2009, was an Indian immigrant, and her father, Donald Harris, is a Jamaican immigrant

Gopalan was a biomedical scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, whose work in isolating and characterizing the progesterone receptor gene stimulated advances in breast biology and oncology Donald, on the other hand, taught at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University briefly, then became an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before moving to California and securing a job as a Professor of Economics at Stanford University. Now, after retiring in the late 1990s, he holds the title of emeritus professor

Since 2020, naysayers have sought to question the vice president's racial identity, background, upbringing, and her connection to the Caribbean, specifically to Jamaica father said that he had always pus two daughters to maintain a conn their island roots while simultaneou patriotic

In a 2018 essay written by entitled Reflections of a Jamaican F noted that he's always pushed for Ka and her sister, Maya, to upho connection to their Jamaican root well as their American ones

“To t day, I continue to retain the deep soc awareness and strong sense of ident which that grassroots Jamaic philosophy fed in me,” he wrote “A father, I naturally sought to devel the same sensibility in my t daughters ”
