Jamaica-Born DJ Kool Herc inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Herc developed the style that was used as one of the additions to the blueprints for Hip-Hop music. As a young DJ, he learned to isolate the instrumental portion of the record which emphasized the drum beat—the “break”—and switch from one break to another. Using the same two-turntable set-up of disco DJs, he used two copies of the same record to elongate the break. This breakbeat DJing formed the basis of Hip-Hop music. His freestyle announcements and exhortations on the record to dancers led to what is now known as rapping. His DJ style was quickly taken up by figures

In the year that Hip-Hop celebrates its 50th anniversary, Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc, known as “the father of Hip-Hop,” was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In a ceremony on Friday in New York, DJ Kool Herc along with Chaka Khan, Kate Bush, “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius, The Spinners, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliot, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, Link Wray, Al Kooper and Bernie Taupin were all inducted. DJ Kool Herc received the “musical influence” award, which goes to “any artist or group whose music and performance style have directly influenced and helped inspire and evolve rock & roll music,” according to the Hall of Fame website. Past inductees in this category include Harry Belafonte, Billie Holiday and Nat “King” Cole. Rapper LL Cool J presented DJ Kool Herc with his award. “Arguably, no one made a bigger contribution to hip-hop culture than DJ Kool Herc,” LL Cool J said and then turned to the older artist: “You lit the fire and it’s still blazing.” DJ Kool Herc in the 1970s

Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister dismisses calls for resignation Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith has dismissed calls for her resignation which came from members of the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP). President of the PNP Mark Golding, and spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Lisa Hanna recently called for the resignation of Johnson Smith following Jamaica’s absence from a United Nation’s vote which called for a “humanitarian truce” in the Gaza Strip. But Johnson Smith said those saying she should resign are “hungry for a headline” and reacted without knowing all the facts. The minister dismissed the calls at a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Ocho Rios Division Conference on Sunday. “A statement [was done] on behalf of the whole of Caricom, including Jamaica; we write

Turks and Caicos authorities intercept over 100 migrants near Northwest Point In the ongoing effort to monitor its borders, the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) have sustained their operations against irregular migration. Recent enforcement actions have led to the detainment of 115 individuals who were found on an unauthorized vessel on Monday evening. The effective detection and interception of the vessel were carried out by the Marine Branch of the police near Northwest Point, Providenciales. The vessel, which held 86 males, including two minors, and 29 females, one of whom was a minor, was safely escorted to the South Dock Port. The successful operation was a collaborative effort that included the TCI Regiment and

the TCI Border Force. Following the interception, the group of irregular migrants was taken into custody by the Border Force for further processing. According to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF), the year up to November 6, 2023, has seen a total of 27 interceptions. The figures show a significant number of irregular migrants—2,788 males and 700 females, totaling 3,488—attempting to enter TCI waters, with 28 minors included in this count. The RTCIPF continues to actively monitor and respond to such activities to maintain the integrity of TCI’s borders.

the statement, we draft it, we led the discussion on it. So it is not a thing nobody don’t know where we stand on the issue. A little communication thing happened, yes, and that was a problem and we are going to fix that problem,” said Johnson Smith. On October 27, a total of 120 countries voted in favor of the non-binding United Nations resolution which called for a “humanitarian truce” in Gaza. Johnson-Smith later clarified that a technical cross in communication led to Jamaica’s representative not voting. “Different countries were suggesting all kinds of different things that complicated the matter during the day. I want to tell you that if she had just done some research and listened to the statement, listened to the fact that Jamaica said that there should be a cessation of

hostilities, Jamaica said there was no justification for killing innocent people, Jamaica said we call for peace…,” added Johnson Smith. She also added that Jamaica’s position on the world stage is strong, despite criticisms that the none note was a major blunder on the government’s part. “Jamaica’s position on the world stage is strong. Don’t listen to what the PNP is saying. And there are some people who their thing is to bad-mouth Jamaica. I don’t know if that was who she was talking to but there are some people who are like that. “Jamaica is large and trusted on the international stage and nothing the PNP says will change that,” Johnson Smith said.

Trinidad & Tobago hit by major data breach In a significant cybersecurity incident, Trinidad & Tobago’s Telecommunications Services (TSTT) has experienced a severe data breach. The breach has resulted in the exposure of personal data belonging to over a million citizens, including the nation’s Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley. Critical personal identifiers such as Dr. Rowley’s identification card, driver’s permit, and passport numbers were among the information compromised. The breach at TSTT has led to 6 gigabytes of personal data being disseminated on the dark web. This data encompasses 1.2 million names and has alarmingly been downloaded more than 13,000 times, raising significant privacy and security concerns. In response to the breach, Marvin Gonzales, the Public Utilities Minister, has taken a firm stance, calling for an independent investigation into the cyberattack. TSTT said some of the data had been accessed from a legacy system, which is no longer being used but contains data that is, in many instances, no longer valid.

Specific details of the water skiing accident remain undisclosed. In response to this heart-wrenching incident, two GoFundMe pages were established. These crowdfunding efforts were dedicated to helping cover the funeral expenses and any unexpected costs arising from the tragedy. The GoFundMe pages have successfully raised funds to address a range of expenses that the Kuhlman family faced during this trying period. According to reports, these expenses include lastminute plane tickets to Saint Lucia, the subsequent journey back home, immediate passport issuance, transportation, accommodations, meals, funeral arrangements, and any unforeseen financial burdens. To date, the combined efforts of the two GoFundMe pages have generated over US $100,000. Heather Kuhlman, Nate’s mother, expressed her profound grief and deep appreciation for the support

they received through social media. She arrived in Saint Lucia to offer a final prayer over her son’s body before an autopsy was conducted. The post-mortem conducted on Thursday confirmed the heartbreaking cause of Nate’s death as drowning. “Nate’s death took all of us by surprise and just took our breath away,” said his grieving mother, Heather. “By God’s grace, we are ok. It’s so hard and painful, but we are walking each day, one moment at a time. I am sad that Nathaniel is no longer here with us, but I know he is very much alive in heaven and will be praying for us,” she added. The Kuhlman family’s heart-wrenching story has touched the hearts of many, and the GoFundMe pages have become a conduit for people to offer their condolences and support during this unimaginable ordeal.

Jamaica targeting 250,000 UK visitors by 2025 Jamaica’s tourism ministry has set yet another ambitious target: to welcome 250,000 visitors out of the United Kingdom and Ireland by 2025. Minister of Tourism Ed Bartlett said the government is already putting plans in place to achieve the goal. “Jamaica welcomed 229,000 U.K. visitors last year, making it the number one destination in the Caribbean for British visitors, and we plan to aggressively build on this number. With additional airlift with the upcoming Norse flights next month along with our other long-standing airline partners, I am confident we will be able to meet this target,” said Minister Bartlett. Beginning on December 1, Norse Atlantic Airlines from the United Kingdom will have flights to Montego Bay, operating four times a week from London Gatwick. The island already has daily nonstop flights from the U.K. through Virgin Atlantic Airways departing from London Heathrow, British Airways departing from London Gatwick, and TUI departing from Birmingham, London Gatwick, and Manchester. “We are truly grateful to be number one in the Caribbean for British travelers, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team. With this new target, it means pushing even more to achieve this goal and retain the number one spot,” said Elizabeth Fox, regional director, U.K. and Nordics, Jamaica Tourist Board. Jamaica has another major goal of attracting more than half a million Canadian visitors to the island by 2025, a 20 percent increase over the current figure of about 400,000. Several airlines will increase flights to the island to achieve this. The island so far has seen record tourist numbers for this year. In the first half of 2023, Jamaica saw a boost in arrivals from the United Kingdom, a 69.2 percent surge in overall tourist arrivals compared to 2021. This growth has resulted in record-breaking earnings exceeding US$2 billion. Stakeholders in the tourism industry expect the island to close out the year with some 2.9 million stopover visitors and expressed optimism of surpassing the three-million mark in stopover arrivals next year, with earnings of more than $4.5 billion.

n June 2022 as inflation in the US peaked at 9.1 percent, several economists predicted a national recession in 2023. But since then inflation rate has fallen to be currently 3.7 percent, quieting any talk of a recession. In 2021 when President Joe Biden assumed office, the unemployment rate was relatively high at 6.3 percent as America gradually recovered from the damaging effects of COVID-19 on jobs. In recent months the national unemployment rate has hovered at 3.6 percent. Each month the national job report has indicated robust employment. Moreover, and most importantly, real wages, adjusted for inflation, have been rising. Economists at some leading US financial institutions, including Morgan-Stanley, agree the US economy is currently doing much better than expected. The economy is “growing much stronger than we anticipated,” Morgan Stanley economists recently reported. The bank now expects Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2023 to be around a 1.9 percent pace, almost twice its earlier projection. Even more optimistic, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta predicted GDP growth in the third quarter of 2023 would be at an annualized rate of 5.6 percent. Yet another encouraging sign of positive US economic growth is during the first two years of the Biden administration investment in manufacturing doubled creating some 800,000 US manufacturing jobs. This spurt in manufacturing is directly tied to the administration's policies including the Inflation Reduction Act, and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in 2022 and 2021 respectively. There's little doubt key national economic indicators point to a strong US economy. Normally, since the performance of most US presidents is historically measured by the nation's economy during their tenure in office,

such positive economic news would be of great help to the incumbent president, especially one seeking reelection. But astonishingly, this is not so with President Biden. Biden has branded the positive economic developments taking place during his three years in office as Bidenomics, a wordplay on President Ronald Reagan's Reaganomics, and a central theme of his reelection campaign. But unlike Reaganomics which emphasized economic growth trickling down from rich to poor, Bidenomics rejects the trickle-down concept. Rather it focuses on making public investments, empowering the middle class economically, and promoting competition to lower costs and help entrepreneurs and small businesses thrive. But there seems to be a vast chasm between the economic development taking place under the Biden administration, and the appreciation of these achievements by Americans. Polls on the favorability of Biden as president are consistently in the mid to low 40 percentage range. In July a NBC News survey indicated 74 percent of Americans said the country is on the wrong track. According to the Gallup Economic Confidence Index, Americans say they haven't felt so bad about the economy since the economic crisis of 2008. A CNN poll in September indicated 58 percent of Americans say Biden's policies have made economic conditions worse. Probably most alarming for Biden's reelection campaign are the findings of a recent New York Times/Siena College poll which found Biden losing to the potential Republican nominee in next year's elections in several competitive states. Clearly, most Americans, if these polls are to be trusted and they have often proved to be not, are not feeling Bidenomics in their pockets. Fueling the discontent in the economy among average Americans are persistent high prices in supermarkets despite the falling inflation, high price of gasoline, and high-

interest rates on mortgages, car loans, credit cards, and high rentals. Ironically, the method of raising interest rates to curb inflation has caused persistent pain to consumers. But with inflation declining from 9.1 percent to 3.7, why aren't mortgage rates falling? Why aren't consumer prices falling faster? Several economists believe the reason mortgage and other interest rates, and consumer prices, are not falling more quickly is due to several businesses' determination to maintain high profits. These high profits are making some business owners and executives richer, while employees and other consumers struggle to cope. Another reason for the economic disconnect is a large percentage of Americans, estimated at two-thirds of the adult US population, are non-college grads who are unqualified for middle or high income jobs. These Americans are locked into dead-end jobs, with little benefits or economic security, while faced with meeting the costs of housing, food, education, and childcare. Too many Americans are not making the effort to pull themselves out of their financial pit, but continue to blame the government, any government, for their plight. Neither the sitting government nor president can be the economic crutch to everyone. It's the government's role to lay the foundation for national economic growth, and the responsibility of the people to adjust their lives to build on this foundation. It seems while the Biden administration has been building this foundation, the foundation is being exploited by some corporations, and not being taken advantage of by a large percentage of Americans.

Haitian police thwart kidnapping, seven suspects killed in shootout secured two vehicles and an array of firearms from the scene. These seizures are part of the ongoing efforts by the PNH to dismantle the networks of violence plaguing the community. Lionel Lazarre, the coordinator of the National Union of Haitian Police Officers (SYNAPOHA), hailed the incident as a testament to the police’s ability to confront criminal elements and protect citizens. This successful operation stands as a beacon of hope and strength for the law enforcement community in Haiti. The incident occurred against a backdrop of increasing concern for public safety in Haiti. The United Nations Expert on Human Rights in Haiti, William O’Neill, recently concluded a visit, highlighting the dire situation marked by frequent violence and a lack of progress in combating sexual violence and improving access to justice and services for survivors.

In a decisive response to a kidnapping incident, the Haitian National Police (PNH) successfully liberated a 60-year-old man and killed seven suspected abductors during a fierce shootout. The operation unfolded when the Intervention Corps for Maintenance of Order (CIMO), a specialized unit of the PNH, stumbled upon the kidnappers, resulting in an intense exchange of gunfire. Reports are that the CIMO officers thwarted the kidnapping attempt as they engaged with the captors, who had abducted the man from his home. The operation also unveiled a disturbing revelation—two assailants were disguised in CIMO uniforms, hinting at the complex challenges faced by law enforcement. In the aftermath of the rescue, police

Dominican Republic boosts border security as tensions with Haiti rise On Tuesday, the Dominican Republic declared plans to enhance security along its northern border with Haiti, responding to what it termed a "provocative" incident. According to Dominican government spokesperson Homero Figueroa, a group of Haitians entered Dominican territory and disrupted an army patrol. Figueroa assured that the situation had not escalated but announced a preventive measure to increase the presence of soldiers and vehicles in the area. Figueroa attributed the incident to a potential misunderstanding by Haitian citizens about the border limits between the two countries, emphasizing the Dominican Army's authority to patrol the area. In contrast, Haitian

media reported that Dominican soldiers had crossed into Haiti, brandishing firearms at locals. Social media shared unverified videos depicting a helicopter circling the border, with Haitian and Dominican soldiers near a wall and a burning tire emitting black smoke. Terming the Haitian action a provocation aimed at instigating conflict with unpredictable consequences, Figueroa reiterated the Dominican government's perspective. Haitian government spokesperson Jean-Junior Joseph stated that foreign ministers from both countries had engaged in discussions, expressing a preference for dialogue and consultation to de-escalate tensions. Recent months have seen heightened

border security and increased migrant deportations by Santo Domingo, particularly in response to escalating gang violence in Haiti. In mid-September, the Dominican Republic announced a complete border shutdown due to the construction of a canal from a shared river. Additionally, a newly erected border wall within Dominican territory has led to misunderstandings on both sides regarding the exact border location. The incident unfolded shortly after Dominican President Luis Abinader met with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss the security situation in Haiti.

Black Cake

Oprah Winfrey-produced TV Series unveils the epic journey of a JamaicanChinese matriarch

Hulu has carved a niche for itself as a platform committed to telling diverse and powerful stories, particularly those led by Black women. "Black Cake," the latest jewel in Hulu's crown, produced by the iconic Oprah Winfrey, is no exception. This sweeping eight-episode family drama, adapted from Charmaine Wilkerson's New York Times-bestselling novel, "Black Cake," is an exploration of the extraordinary life of a biracial Jamaican Chinese woman and the legacy she leaves behind. At its core, "Black Cake" delves into the remarkable journey of Eleanor Bennett, portrayed with depth and authenticity by Chipo Chung. Eleanor is a Jamaican Chinese woman whose life has unfolded across different continents and cultures. Her past, however, remains shrouded in mystery, hidden even

from her own children. It's only after her passing that her children stumble upon a flash drive filled with her audio recordings, shedding light on a life they never truly knew. As they navigate their mother's revelations from beyond the grave, they are confronted with their own undeniable truths. Filmed in diverse locations, including Jamaica, England, Italy, and the United States, "Black Cake" presents a vivid tapestry of Eleanor Bennett's life. Mia Isaac, a rising star known for her roles in "Don't Make Me Go" and "Not Okay," breathes life into the character of Covey, the younger Eleanor. Covey, an aspiring swimmer, is abandoned by her Jamaican mother and raised by her Chinese father Lin and her mother's close friend, Pearl. She embarks on a journey that takes her from Europe to America, transforming her into a confident and assertive woman who shares a complex relationship with her children, Byron and Benny. Eleanor's audio recordings, entrusted to family friend and attorney Charles Mitch,

portrayed by the talented Glynn Turman, unearth startling secrets that send shockwaves through the family. Byron, brought to life by Ashley Thomas, is driven by his mother's passion for swimming but must confront racial discrimination that has limited his career and self-esteem. Benny, portrayed by Adrienne Warren, is an artist and chef who has distanced herself from the family for nearly a decade, feeling overshadowed by her high-achieving brother. Adding an intriguing layer to the narrative is the enigmatic presence of Mabel, a culinary superstar from Italy, portrayed by Sonita Henry. "Black Cake" stands out as a departure from the conventional, particularly in its focus on Caribbean and Asian communities and other groups of color that have historically struggled to gain recognition in mainstream storytelling. Showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar, known for her work on "The Handmaid's Tale" and "13 Reasons Why," brings a deeply personal touch to "Black Cake." As a biracial woman, Cerar's connection to the story infuses

it with complex and aspirational characters that resonate across diverse audiences. The series explores themes such as mystery, murder, love, family, and self-discovery, leaving no emotional terrain uncharted. In their respective roles, Chipo Chung and Mia Isaac deliver compelling performances that immerse viewers in the story. Mia Isaac, in particular, shines as she carries the weight of Covey's character, embodying both innocence and resilience in the face of life's unexpected challenges. The supporting cast, including Lashay Anderson, Ahmed Elhaj, and Karisse Yansen, contribute depth and nuance to the narrative. Ashley Thomas, a British actor and former rapper, brings a commanding presence to the character of Byron, while Adrienne Warren, a Tony Award winner celebrated for her portrayal of Tina Turner on stage, offers a whimsical touch to Benny's character. Their on-screen chemistry beautifully captures the intricate dynamics of a brother-sister bond, simultaneously fragile and unbreakable. Sonita Henry's portrayal of Mabel is equally captivating, demanding attention in every scene she graces. "Black Cake" is a groundbreaking series that not only entertains but also opens doors to diverse and dynamic storytelling possibilities. By placing Caribbean women's experiences at the forefront, the series reframes what may have been considered exotic through the lens of the white gaze, showcasing the real and lived lives of Caribbean women. In an increasingly interconnected global society, "Black Cake" reminds us that the narratives of Caribbean women deserve recognition and celebration. Don't miss the premiere of "Black Cake" on Hulu, with the first three episodes airing on Wednesday, November 1st. It's a series that promises to empower, enlighten, and inspire, making it essential viewing for audiences of all backgrounds, and particularly for those who seek to understand and celebrate the resilience and triumphs of Caribbean women.

He did, however, tell his staff, other city commissioners, and city manager. Reyes, a former city budget analyst and Miami-Dade Schools teacher, serves District 4, representing Flagami and Coral Way. He was first elected to the City of Miami Commission in 2017 by an overwhelming 57% of the vote to complete the final two years of Francis Suarez’s term following Suarez’s election as mayor. In 2019, Reyes was re-elected without opposition. He is currently seeking re-election for a second full term and says he is feeling “strong” and healthy.

According to the article, Mitchell Hill, the President of CAALC, emphasized the organization’s mission, stating that it is about empowering the young men and women of Caribbean descent “who call this place home.” Hill spoke about their commitment to providing educational scholarships year

after year, offering brighter futures to the community’s youth. Hill added that CAALC’s Lake Steel Orchestra also garnered recognition for nurturing musical talent among young participants. Groveland Mayor Evelyn Wilson delivered an inspiring keynote address, highlighting the importance of diversity, unity, inclusivity, acceptance, peace, community service, and smart growth in South Lake. The gala featured the presentation of CAALC’s prestigious Community Awards. Dr. Lorna Bennett was honored as the ‘Caribbean Immigrant of the Year.’

Miami International

This remarkable achievement places MIA in an elite group of airports renowned for their efficiency and passenger-friendly experience. PlanetWare’s methodology relies on data provided by iFly, a comprehensive flight information platform. It tracks flight volumes and monitors the staffing levels of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at various airports to estimate wait times hour by hour. This data-driven approach ensures the accuracy of the reported wait times. To compile its rankings, PlanetWare narrowed down its focus to the 31 U.S. airports with the highest average passenger numbers annually. These airports represent a cross-section of the nation’s busiest travel hubs, allowing for a fair comparison of security wait times. The study then arranges the airports on this list from the longest to the shortest average wait time, revealing MIA’s exceptional standing. In a press release, MIA noted that it achieved this ranking while also being the fastest-growing mega airport in seat capacity (30 million annual passengers or more) in the U.S. since the pandemic, according to Airports Council International-North America. MIA also secured the top spot among mega airports in the Sunshine State, cementing its status as Florida’s premier travel hub. Additionally, in a recent report by J.D. Power, MIA ranks an impressive 4th place among the busiest airports in North America, further solidifying its reputation as a top-tier airport in the region.

‘Unruly’ Wallabees Popcaan collaborates with Clarks on new ‘Unruly’ collection Over a decade after releasing the massive dancehall hit ‘Clarks’ with his then-mentor Vybz Kartel, dancehall star Popcaan has collaborated with the shoe brand. Clarks announced the collaboration with a mini commercial on social media where Popcaan is seen in Somerset England, in search of the Clarks Orginials headquarters. The video showcased the new shoe, a Wallabee design with a bold red color scheme and striking camo print complemented by Popcaan’s signature “Unruly” wording throughout the pattern and insole. Clarks Originals said in the post that the new design will be made available on November 10 at selected Jamaican retailers including Signature Style, Trevor’s Clothing, Accessories and Collectibles, Fashion Express and Cann’s Originals. This collaboration will also be available via Clarks UK, US, EU, Japan and China, and in Clarks Originals stores in London, Manchester, Osaka, Tokyo and Beijing.

Popcaan

The collaboration is a full circle moment for the deejay, who had his big break in dancehall in 2010 with “Clarks”, a collaboration with Vybz Kartel. The success of the song caused a nationwide spike in sales of the British shoe. In 2011, Popcaan received the Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Award for Best New Artist — Male and Collaboration of the Year for “Clarks”, which also won Song of the Year — Dancehall. The British shoe brand has long been part of Jamaica’s fashion culture, even prior to the country’s independence. In 2021, Clarks paid homage to the island with a “Jamaica Pack” comprising the Desert Boot, Desert Trek and the Wallabee, each shoe is dressed in shades of yellow, green and black as a nod to the Jamaican national flag. The company also announced several community initiatives through a partnership with Clarks brand ambassador, Jamaicanborn British footballer Raheem Sterling, who has his own Clarks shoe.

Fraser-Pryce celebrates 10 years of impact with the Pocket Rocket Foundation

The event, a blend of celebration and fundraising, unfolded at the elegant AC Hotel in Kingston, where attendees reflected on the foundation’s journey, expressed their thanks, and recommitted themselves to supporting underprivileged students and athletes from the Waterhouse community. Fraser-Pryce began by extending her deep appreciation to the sponsors, partners, and friends who have steadfastly supported the foundation over the past 10 years. She emphasized, “It’s because of your generosity why we’re here this evening, celebrating 10 years of the Pocket Rocket Foundation. The impact and the legacy that we have had throughout the 10 years is all because of you.” Turning her focus to the foundation’s origins, FraserPryce shared the driving force behind its establishment. “The reason I have the Pocket Rocket Foundation is because, throughout my life, there have been so many individuals who invested in who I was and who I was destined to become. They saw vision, they saw hope, they saw so much more, and it’s because of them that we have the Pocket Rocket Foundation.” The five-time World 100m champion emphasized the pivotal role of balancing education and sports in transforming lives, a lesson she learned early on. “When I was in Waterhouse, I always knew, like my mom would say to me, that sports was going to be my way out. We have to learn to strike the balance between education and sport to transform your life, and I learned that early on.” She underscored the significance of service, stating, “Service is our greatest strength. I’ve always believed that. For those who serve, you are powerful. It’s your strength from which you lead. I crossed the line and I wanted to give back.” The three-time Olympic gold medalist acknowledged the pivotal role played by her then-manager, Bruce James, in establishing the foundation. She expressed her commitment to making a genuine impact rather than merely pursuing a philanthropic endeavor for appearances. “I said to Mr. (Bruce) James that I needed to start my foundation, and I wanted it to have an impact. I don’t want to start a foundation just because it looks good on paper or sounds good. I want to start a foundation because I want to have an impact. I want to provide student-athletes with the same privilege, the same opportunity to dream, to plant a seed, to have hope.” Fraser-Pryce expressed her gratitude to the initial supporters of the foundation, including GraceKennedy, Digicel, and Nike, for their crucial initial funding. She particularly highlighted Sagicor’s contribution, providing a rent-free home for the foundation for almost two years. Transparency and integrity in the foundation’s operations were deemed essential by Fraser-Pryce. Throughout her address, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to her sponsors, highlighting their unwavering support. “There’s never a time when I’ve called on any of my sponsors to say, ‘I need your support, I need to donate food, I need toys for the kids, I need bags,’ and they’re always there. I’ve never heard ‘I can’t.’ It’s always ‘yes.'” Fraser-Pryce then shed light on the profound impact the Pocket Rocket Foundation has had on studentathletes, mentioning that 73 individuals have benefited from the program over the past decade. She cited examples like Tahj Lumley, one of the foundation’s early recipients, who went on to become the national squash coach, and Jovaine Atkinson, who pursued a career as a pilot. “When you speak about them, it is hope, and that hope is the seed we have sown in their lives, thanks to you. I want to fuel those dreams and help them exceed their own expectations.”
