Bob Marley’s best friend Allan ‘Skill’ Cole talks ‘One Love’

The omissions in reggae legend Bob Marley’s new biopic ‘One Love’ have raised eyebrows, including the ones of the icon’s best friend, confidant, and road manager, former Jamaican footballer Allan ‘Skill’ Cole

Speaking to Caribbean National Weekly from Jamaica, when asked if he’s seen the box office hit, Cole answered, “No, really and truly I was invited but I declined the invitation ” He continued, “Because I just feel like I’m not interested to look at that movie I think the road that they took was not the right road, so I sort of

stay away from it ”

Reminiscing about Bob, the man he calls a “Jamaican treasure” he added, “If you’re going to do a story you must be as truthful as much as you can ”

With no mention of what was a long and enduring friendship that originated from their youthful days in Trench Town up until the legends’ premature passing, Cole was questioned as to why there was no reference to him in the biopic “I wonder why? I ask why too ”

He admitted, “I’m reading all the different

“Unfortunately most of the people who were around, who were an integral part [of Bob’s life during that time] are gone to rest. It would only take people like myself to get the real happenings of what transpired then” – Allan Cole continues on C3 – Allan ‘Skill’ Cole

A Musical Journey with Grammy-Award winning songwriter Vision Alexander Crafting A Royal Tapestry

In the vibrant tapestry of reggae music, a genre that has long resonated with riddims of rebellion, and resilience, a Visionary songwriter has begun making waves South Florida native, Vision Alexander is a name that has become synonymous with high-caliber creativity He has indelibly etched his mark as a distinguished songwriter, traveling beyond the realms of his roots in Jamaica and its music His journey, marked by his unwavering faith in the value of hard work, is a testament to the enduring spirit of not only reggae music but music’s overall power to inspire and transform

During his early days as a collegiate soccer player, Vision was content with his life’s trajectory as a young baller Spending most of his days on the field, he had no plans to pursue music Between matches, he began engaging in writing and performing, sparked only by his sheer love of music, and the ability it gave him to share his culture with the world Little by little, this passion would serendipitously evolve into a full-fledged career in the music industry His first single “We Jammin” featuring Mojo Morgan became the heartbeat of his earliest days as an artist, as it opened the door to his signature foray of his most memorable collaborations

The artist’s vision became even clearer when he worked alongside Jemere Morgan on the single “Right Time,” which was officially released in January 2018 The song was recognized by Billboard as a “Hot Single” on their Hot Singles Sales Pop

“Winning [the Grammy] felt unreal . The road to a win definitely felt like a roller coaster with a lot of twists and turns and emotions. But the journey is always one I'll remember – Vision Alexander

Chart This highlight was Vision’s introduction into the world of accolades, which would become the first of many recognitions honoring his creative contributions

Expanding his global footprint, he went on to collaborate with British producers Cardboard Foxes on their single “Everything is Alright ” The song ranked number 17 on the weekly “Top 40” charts in the UK, which propelled his reach even further beyond borders During this time, the budding musician made a personal decision to take a short

hiatus from working on music This break gave him the perspective he needed to come back stronger, with a new vision to work with some of music's most notable talents

After this moment of clarity, Vision officially found his stride when he stepped into his role as a

songwriter His ability to weave layered narratives and emotive melodies into his compositions caught the attention of industry insiders and fellow musicians alike He began working with artists such as Lila Ike, Jesse Royal, Koffee, Protoje, Romain Virgo, Teyana Taylor, and Julian Marley to name a few His creative abilities resonated with artists beyond genres and gave him the confidence he needed to take his writing contributions to the next level

Working closely with Jesse Royal, Vision made significant contributions to the album "Royal," which earned him his first-ever Grammy nomination for "Best Reggae Album " This collaboration included contributions from Grammy-winning producer Sean Alaric Partnering with Jesse not only enriched Vision's musical collection but also transformed him from an aspiring artist to a respected industry figure known for his prolific songwriting and behind-the-scenes work

Vision reached a career highlight with his role in Julian Marley's "Colors of Royal" album Serving as a co-executive producer alongside industry talents like Alex Antaeus, Sean Alaric, Prince Productions, Mr Sonic, and Notice, and contributing as the lead songwriter, Vision's affinity for quality shines through in the album's rich vibration His grasp of reggae's heritage and its modern progression is showcased in the album's arrangements, lyrics, and sound

On Sunday, February 4, Vision lived his ultimate moment of

triumph as he received his first Grammy award for “Best Reggae Album” for his contributions to "Colors of Royal ”

“Winning felt unreal,” says Vision, “I'm still processing it as we speak I know this is where the work begins, and I am ready to put in more work ” “The road to a win definitely felt like a roller coaster with a lot of twists and turns and emotions But the journey is always one I'll remember Sitting there at the Grammys for hours waiting for the category to be called really gave me time to reflect on the hard work that got us here I give thanks to God for allowing us to be a part of musical history, and pray he keeps us motivated and healthy to continue this path ”

Vision played a pivotal role in collaborating on a majority of the album’s writing efforts This accolade serves as a validation of his talent, hard work, and the innovative approach he has brought into many creative sessions Winning a Grammy is a milestone that many artists dream of, but for Vision, it was also a reminder of the uncharted journey, immeasurable collaborations, and the tough road that inevitably shaped his path to success His story, marked by both uncertainty and triumph, serves as a reminder to other artists, and those who believe in the power of music to change lives As reggae music continues to evolve, Vision Alexander will undoubtedly be seen as a powerful figure in weaving its tapestry and writing new chapters in the history books of royals

Despite attempts by the vessel’s occupants to evade capture by dumping contraband overboard, Marine Interdiction agents successfully halted the vessel and apprehended its three occupants a Venezuelan and two Dominican Republic nationals

Jamaica makes progress in combatting human trafficking says Police Commissioner

Jamaica’s fight against human trafficking is gaining momentum, according to Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson

Speaking at the inauguration of a new Child-Friendly Space at the CounterT e r r o r i s m a n d O r g a n i z e d C r i m e Investigation Branch (C-TOC) in downtown Kingston, Commissioner Anderson commended the nation’s National Task Force against Human Trafficking for its dedication and highlighted both achievements and ongoing obstacles in this critical battle

Their unwavering commitment, he noted, lies at the heart of Jamaica’s strategy to confront and prevent these crimes

Reflecting on Jamaica’s efforts to dispel any notion of being a trafficking hotspot, Major General Anderson underscored the

country’s commitment to reshaping its international reputation

Pointing to tangible successes in prosecuting traffickers, Commissioner Anderson highlighted the increasing number of convictions and cases brought before the

courts These legal victories signify a strengthening legal framework and a justice system better equipped to handle the complexities of trafficking cases, marking significant progress in Jamaica’s anti-trafficking efforts

A crucial aspect of Commissioner Anderson’s address was the emphasis on establishing child-friendly spaces to support victims

These spaces provide a nurturing and secure environment for young victims, minimizing re-traumatization and facilitating their recovery process

Anderson stressed the importance of such initiatives in safeguarding and aiding the most vulnerable individuals affected by trafficking

“Unfortunately most of the people who were around, who were an integral part [of Bob’s life during that time] are gone to rest,” he said “It would only take people like myself to get the real happenings of what transpired then ” He, however, wasn’t consulted

“I guess they [the writers and filmmakers] can get away with it [the film’s portrayal] because these young people who are going to see the movie don’t understand and know nothing of the history, so anything they show on the screen they will gravitate to it ”

No ill will on Cole’s part

Allan ‘Skill’ Cole said he harbors no ill will “I don’t want to get involved. I don’t want it to seem like I’m a spoiled sport or anything like that. I’m not upset or nothing about what they did It is just sad to know that these things happen”

Of One Love’s authenticity, Marley’s son Ziggy who is also a producer for the film in a recent interview with Billboard said, “Everything true What we did was we took things from different timelines though, so not everything that happened in this movie happened in this timeline But what was important for us is to show Bob’s character ”

In an effort not to give too much away for those who haven’t seen the film, the compan-

ionship between Bob and his wife Rita reigns supreme in the movie Cole spoke highly of Bob’s widow who with the help of her children and his other offspring has posthumously made the name Marley bigger than ever Of Rita, he said, “She knows the truth ”

Anyone who had the opportunity to be around the genius that was Bob Marley holds the truth of what their interaction with him was and how they want the world to know about it

Allan ‘Skill’ Cole just wishes his truth was told, but also acknowledges that he isn’t the only one whose impact on Bob’s life was misplaced in the film, as former Miss World, one of Bob’s girlfriends and Damion ‘Jnr Gong’ Marley’s mother Cindy Breakspeare, who is said to have lived with ‘Tuff Gong’ during his time living in London while in exile after being shot in Jamaica, is barely seen in the blockbuster

“Maybe one day we will get to do the right story,” said Cole He pauses as if inspired and manifesting a dream, “We’ll get the story done because I have the story ” With aspirations of completing his memoir which will include his time with his dear friend Bob, he says, “The true story will unfold one day man Nuh worry ”

Is Your Child Getting High?

Experts share the signs and how parents can get help

The early warning signs of marijuana abuse were there, but Jo McGuire admits she mistook them for typical adolescent behavior in her son. He was sleeping too much, moody, and forgetful Typical for a teenager, she thought

But a suicide attempt led to the revelation that her young son had been a habitual cannabis user to help him cope with the stress and anxieties he had been battling for some time

“I still can feel that shock all over again because it was not something that I ever expected or could have imagined,” says Ms McGuire, who had been involved in prevention education in Colorado schools for two decades before transitioning her career into drug and alcohol testing Today, she's the founder and executive director of the National Drug and Alcohol Screening Association

Bill Lynch, a clinical pharmacist, and Brittany Payne Bruce, a Florida-based licensed mental health counselor, can relate to Ms McGuire's traumatic experience with her child

“I see, unfortunately, a lot of youth coming in with difficulty with marijuana and many other substances,” says Mr Lynch, who, as a youth sports coach and referee in the Philadelphia area, spends a lot of time with children and their parents He is also a member of several organizations focused on preventing substance abuse

Ms Payne Bruce says that when adolescents confide in her that they use marijuana, she tries to uncover the underlying causes or the “why ” She says the reasons range from fitting in among their peers to coping with insecurities and anxieties to decompressing from the pressures of schoolwork and parental expecta-

tions

“One of the major things I hear is, '[marijuana] just helps me relax I feel better using it,'” Ms Payne Bruce says

Ms McGuire cites the “normalization” of medical cannabis in American society as a reason some teens are self-medicating with marijuana they obtain illegally “That's what I'm seeing, and that's what I saw with my son,” she says, adding that teens are usually not educated about the harm marijuana can inflict on the adolescent brain

She, Mr Lynch, and Ms Payne Bruce are committed to educating teens and their parents about the risks of marijuana use at an early age

Mr Lynch warns that the rising potency of the psychoactive ingredient in illicit marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), “is what's driving all these problems ” He also points to vaping nicotine among youths as a precursor to marijuana use

So, what can parents do to help prevent a child from becoming a regular marijuana user? Be mindful of their behavior and any abnormalities in it, for one Telltale signs include

bloodshot eyes, persistent dry mouth, heightened mood swings, and a big appetite

Mr Lynch advises parents not to panic or be judgmental when they realize their child is using marijuana He also suggests enlisting the support of a mentor or a trusted third party to offer a “safe place” for confidential discussions

with their child

He says another way parents can help is by using technology to get their kids out of a situation involving alcohol or drugs

“Parents should set up a safe word or emoji (e,g lasagna/purple heart) for the child to send them via their cell phone when the child finds themselves in an uncomfortable situation that involves alcohol, is drug-related, or for any other reason Once they get the text, parents should call their child to confirm that they need to be picked up due to a family emergency (e g Grandmom got sick and taken to the hospital) Parents should then confirm the address and, with no other questions asked, go pick up their child immediately,” he explained

Ms Payne Bruce says parents could seek to help their child find a better method for dealing with the stressors in their lives

“Try asking them, 'Are there possibly other things that could help you calm down when you ' re stressed? Is there any way that I can help you?'” she says

“If you feel that your child has developed a substance-use disorder where they feel they can't go without the substance, get help,” recommends Ms McGuire You need to find the resources that are available to you Stay educated on what is going on out there Stay informed Just be vigilant ”

Black History Month reveals significant Black progress

Although there are those who argue Black history is too vast, too intense, covering a period of over four centuries, to be capsulated within one month; February, like it has for several years past, is again being commemorated as Black History Month

For America's Black population, each year's commemoration seems to gain more significance This year, the media, social and traditional, have been focusing more on America's Black history and the people who made significant contribution throughout this history, resulting in more Americans learning of the outstanding achievements of Black Americans

One of the areas in which Black Americans faced the most challenges for centuries was that of politics It was not until 1965 with the passage of the Voting Rights Act that Black Americans could vote freely in American elections With each general election since 1965 the Black vote became more important and sought after

2 0 0 8 b e c a m e a pivotal watershed year for Black people in American politics Beyond all expectations, a Black man, Barack Obama, was nominated to represent a major political party, the Democratic Party, as presidential candidate. Obama confounded the most profound doubters when he was overwhelmingly elected as president In this election Black voters emerged as a strong voting bloc with 95 percent of Black voters voting for Obama The Black vote has been more eagerly sought since by both Republican and Democrat candidates, although the support by Black voters leans heavily towards the Democrats The Black vote was also very influential in the election of President Joe Biden in 2020, in which 62 6 percent of Black people voted Though not as historical impactful as the Black vote in 2008, the Black vote

was pivotal in giving Biden an historical victory in Georgia, and ensured he secured victories in closely contested states like Michigan and Pennsylvania

The increasing power of the Black vote in America is one of the most successful achievements of the black population Black history will note with pride that America's Black population is responding emphatically to the call to utilize its voting power and make a defining change in local, state, and national governmental leadership

The remarkable evolution and lesson of black history is America's black population isn't willing to r e m a i n i n a b o x Strengthened by years of persistent migration of Black people from the Caribbean, and ironically from Africa, America's Black population have made significant gains in society, shaking off the stigma of a marginalized class, to secure its place in the middle class, and beyond

There's increasing evidence of the influence of Black leadership in various aspects of American life, outside traditional fields of sports and entertainment Today, Black people are leaders in business, m e d i c i n e , s c i e n c e , education, politics, and are increasingly entrenched in the higher echelons of the federal government

The commemoration of another Black history month should be time for America's black population to not only reflect on historical achievements and accomplishments but ensure there are systems in place to continue the population's upward mobility It is critically important Black Americans doesn't fall victim to any semblance of complacency There is still a far way to go to reach “the promised land” envisaged by Rev Martin Luther King, Jr

Metal detectors planned for some Broward high schools

In the upcoming fall semester, Broward high school students may encounter a new layer of security measures. The school district intends to introduce walk-through metal detectors at 10 high schools, as confirmed by Superintendent Peter Licata

These detectors, while enhancing security, aim to streamline the process without causing undue stress for students

According to district officials, the technology employs artificial intelligence to differentiate between harmless items like cellphones and keys and prohibited objects like firearms and knives, eliminating the need for students to remove backpacks or undergo extensive searches

Licata assured that the process would be swift and likened it to leaving a library with an unchecked book The district is currently assessing bids, with the School Board slated to vote on a contract in April, according to district administrator Judith Marte

The discussion around metal detectors has been ongoing in Broward, particularly following the tragic 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

Since then, the district has implemented various security enhancements, including increased armed officers, restricted visitor access, and mandatory student ID badges

While previous resistance to widespread metal detector use stemmed from concerns continues on B4 – Metal detectors

Further complicating the situation, additional individuals, including HaitianAmerican pastor Christian Emmanuel Sanon, former DEA informant Joseph Vincent, presidential security chief Dimitri Hérard, former senator John Joël Joseph, and judge Windelle Coq, face charges related to the assassination Some have already been extradited to the United States, where they face federal charges, with several already sentenced

Florida’s tourism numbers dip in 2023

Florida’s tourism sector experienced a dip in visitor numbers last year, failing to match the record-breaking figures of 2022

Despite a resurgence in international travel post-pandemic, there was a noticeable decline in domestic tourism late last year

According to the tourism-marketing agency Visit Florida, the state welcomed an estimated 135 02 million tourists in 2023, down from the peak of 137 4 million in the preceding year

Although this figure marks a decline, it still represents an increase from pre-pandemic levels, with 2019 seeing approximately 131 1 million visitors

Visit Florida’s President and CEO Dana Young highlighted positive trends despite the challenges faced, including rising travel costs and widespread inflation

Notably, the agency pointed to a significant rebound in international tourism, with record air travel numbers and a notable return of overseas visitors contributing to Florida’s

resilience in 2023

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Florida saw a surge in overseas visitors, with a 15 9 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022

Furthermore, 1 07 million Canadians in the fourth quarter of 2023 was a 22 percent

improvement from the same period in 2022

However, the overall fourth-quarter tourist numbers for 2023 fell short of expectations, with a decrease from 32 9 million in 2022 to 29 8 million in 2023

Health ofcials investigate measles outbreak in Weston

The Florida Department of Health in Broward County (DOH-Broward) is currently investigating a series of measles cases reported at a primary school in Weston, Florida

This health concern has prompted a collaborative effort with various partners, including Broward County Public Schools and local healthcare facilities, to mitigate the spread of this highly infectious disease

DOH-Broward’s response to the outbreak involves a comprehensive strategy aimed at identifying and protecting individuals at risk of transmission The department has alerted healthcare providers within the vicinity to be vigilant

Those who have completed the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccination series enjoy a 98 percent protection rate, significantly reducing their risk of contracting the disease

Measles is known for its high contagion, capable of staying airborne or lingering on

surfaces for two hours, and poses a 90 percent infection risk to unvaccinated or otherwise susceptible individuals

The focus is on identifying individuals who may not have received the MMR vaccine or those with compromised immune systems for potential post-exposure prophylaxis, using either MMR vaccinations or immunoglobulin treatments

The incubation period for measles can extend from eight to 21 days post-exposure, with the disease being transmissible from four days before to four days after the rash appears

Complications from measles can be severe, leading to pneumonia or encephalitis in some cases

Public health officials urge anyone experiencing symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, or red, watery eyes to contact their healthcare provider for guidance on seeking care without risking the health of

others In light of the outbreak, DOH-Broward emphasizes the importance of not visiting health facilities unannounced if measles is suspected

The first step should be a phone consultation to ensure safe access to medical evaluation and to prevent further exposure

With a notable rash that typically starts on the face and neck before spreading, early detection and isolation are key to controlling this measles outbreak

Industry experts attribute the decline in domestic tourism to increased competition from other states and countries that were slower to reopen during the pandemic
