Talk about prostate cancer with friends, family, and coworkers
Born September 7, 1919, in Kingston, Jamaica, Bennett Coverley developed a passion for literature and Jamaican folklore in school
The Doodle, which is the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists, was illustrated by Jamaican guest artist Robyn Smith
Her column, which captured the experiences of Jamaicans in their own language, gained support across the countryAftergraduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in Britain, Bennett worked with repertory companies in Coventry, Huddersfield, and Amersham, as well as in intimate revues across England During her time in the country, she hosted two radio programs for the BBC – Caribbean Carnival (1945 1946) and West Indian Night (1950)
In 1998, the Jamaican government appointed Bennett Coverley as the country's Cultural Ambassador at Large In that year, she also received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from York University, Toronto, Canada
A study conducted by the National Library of Medicine in 2018 surmised that in the Caribbean, prostate cancer occurrence was “consistently higher in men with lower levels of education ” The study also found that married men reported a higher occurrence of the disease partly because “The social support extended by marriage is thought to promote health seeking behavior, leading to a greater chance of diagnosis ” The same study also showed that men who had fewer sex partners, which could lead to lower rates of venereal disease, and men with a higher rate of ejaculation could lower the risk of developing prostate cancer
World Cancer Research Fund International suggests the following possible risk factors:
Bennett authored several books and poetry in Jamaican Patois, helping to have it recognized as a "national language" in its own right She also released numerous recordings of traditional Jamaican folk music and recordings from her radio and television shows including Jamaican Folk Songs, Children's Jamaican Songs and Games, Miss Lou's Views (1967), Listen to Louise (1968), Carifesta Ring Ding (1976)
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
On Jamaica's independence day 2001, Bennett Coverley was appointed as a Member of the Order of Merit for her distinguished contribution to the development of the arts and culture

In a Q&A posted by Google Doodle, the artist, Smith, shared her reaction when she was approached about working on the Doodle
Soon, Bennett Coverley was given a weekly column in The Gleaner, the island's newspaper at the time, though it originally rejected Bennett's Patois poems, as

The Mayor said the creation of a new code would help financial institutions detect and report suspicious activity, such as unusually large purchases of firearms or ammunition, or purchases from multiple stores, which may be used for criminal purposes
“I applaud Comptroller Lander for leading this shareholder action to demand responsible leadership and a true public private partnership to end gun violence ”
On Sunday, May 22, Davy was walking to his mother’s house in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood while talking on the phone with his sisterTheJamaican’s assailants are said to have startled him and shot him in the neck and right leg
Myrie said gun violence is a public health and safety crisis that demands a full force response from every sector, including financial servicesThe representative for the 20th Senate District in Brooklyn said credit card companies have the power to track suspicious spending patterns and can use a designated MCC to help save lives
Credit card companies, such as American Express, MasterCard and Visa, use a four digit merchant category code to classify businesses by the types of goods and services sold, Adams said, adding that merchant category codes are set by the International Organization on Standardization (ISO)
Proposals have been brought before the ISO to create a merchant category code for gun retailers, but American Express, MasterCard and Visa have not supported the notion
A man and woman have been charged for the murder of 45 year old Jamaica born TSA worker, Donavan Davy in East Flatbush, Brooklyn in May
Adams said unique merchant category codes exist for grocery stores, sporting goods stores, bicycle shops and many other retailers, but not for gun and ammunition stores
“When it comes to guns falling into the wrong hands, we must find upstream solutions before we’re faced with downstream consequences — because downstream consequences are lost lives,” said Mayor Adams
According to media accounts, they were then charged with second degree murder, with Barrett also being accused of criminal possession of a weapon
“As trustees of the New York City Employees’ Retirement System, we have invested in the big three credit card companies We have a fiscal and moral responsibility to protect New Yorkers’ safety and finances by urging these companies to exercise that same responsibility and implement category codes to help detect suspicious purchases at gun and ammunition stores
Williams said credit card companies already use merchant category codes for retailers from utilities to transportation to clothing, stating that “it’s past time they also used them to specifically mark gun stores as well
“We need to think creatively and act aggressively to address this scourge The credit card companies have their role to play in this and must do their part to help combat gun violence and keep our families safe,” he added
New York State Senator Zellnor Myrie, whose grandmother hailed from Jamaica; New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, the son of Grenadian immigrants; and Queen Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr , whose father is Jamaica born, said they wholeheartedly support the initiative
He died later in the hospital
Both are reportedly “acquaintances” of DavyDavy, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) federal security officer, was assigned to John F Kennedy International Airport in Queens He spent 17 years with the TSAThe reason for Davy’s death is unknown
Three Caribbean American legislators have joined New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, and other elected leaders in calling on three of the world’s largest credit card companies, to support a proposal to establish a merchant category code (MCC) for gun and ammunition stores to monitor and track sales.
The three pension funds own 667,200 thousand shares in American Express valued at about US$92 49 million; 1 1 million shares in MasterCard valued at about US$347 59 million; and US$1 85 million shares in Visa valued at about $363 86 million
Richard Barrett, 34, and Irene Brown, 31 were arrested on Thursday, after members of the Regional Task Force spotted them driving in a car on Southbound FDR drive

Richards said gun violence is a crisis that has been tearing apart too many families for far too long

“Every illegal gun was legal at some point, and the usage of these codes would be instrumental in monitoring and tracking those legal gun sales as well as future gun trafficking,” Williams added
