International cricket returns to Lauderhill

Facebook to partner with Jamaica A team from social media giant, Facebook, is scheduled to visit Jamaica next month for the official launch of a partnership with the Ministry of Education.

Cricket, lovely cricket, will return to Lauderhill in Broward County this summer. After a successful 2016 Hero Caribbean Premier League tournament at Central Broward Stadium, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved T20 fixtures for the venue this year.

Under the partnership, Facebook will broadcast “Ananda Alerts” --- the system used to report missing children in Jamaica. “This partnership will enable the broadcast of Ananda Alerts on pages of all Facebook users in Jamaica, which will ensure that we have a larger pool searching for our children when they go missing,” said Floyd Green, the Minister of State in the Education Ministry. Green made the announcement during his contribution to the 2017/2018 Sectoral Debate in Parliament early this month. The Ananda Alert was launched on May 19, 2009.

The Hero Caribbean Premier League is scheduled to take place from August 4 to September 10. Match schedule and ticket information will be announced shortly. Last year, six matches were played at Central Broward Stadium. Along with the excitement and interest the games generated, they contributed $12,583,246 to the local economy. The Hero CPL invested $1,668,151, and visitors to Broward County spent $4,751,872. The CPL organizers are confident there will be an improvement on the estimated 30,000 fans who attended matches last year. In addition, there is a potential television audience of 12.7 million viewers. Damien O'Donohoe, chief executive of the Hero CPL, said: “On behalf of Hero CPL, I am delighted that the biggest party in sport will return to the USA later this year. Over 30,000 fans packed our American leg of matches in 2016. Over half of those attendees travelled from New York and Texas, and as far west as Los Angeles." He added that, “We welcome the opportunity to play our part in USA cricket's future plans. We have committed to a community outreach program to ensure the impact of the Hero CPL goes beyond the field of play….. we believe the quality of cricket on the field,

Jamaica's Ambassador to the US and President Trump have cordial talks

– Floyd Green

Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks, made an official courtesy call to US President Donald Trump at the White House recently.

United States President Donald Trump gives Jamaica the “thumbs up” as he shares a light moment with Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States Her Excellency Audrey Marks in the Oval Office at the White House during a courtesy call on the US President.

While Marks previously met with Vice-President Mike Pence and other members of the Trump administration, she was yet to meet Trump. Jamaicans remain anxious about the nature of their relationship with the new President. Trump told Marks he is looking forward to working with Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness on bilateral and regional issues. During their discussion, Trump and Marks acknowledged the traditional friendship between Jamaica and the United States, noting the contribution of Jamaicans in many spheres of American life.

It was named in honor of Ananda Dean, an 11-year-old student of a Kingston school who went missing on September 17, 2008. The two-week search ended in despair as her headless, decomposing body was found in bushes. The system was devised to increase chances of recovering missing children by getting information out to the public faster. Under the Ananda Alert program, when a child goes missing, a report is made to the nearest police station or by

US reaches agreement with Caribbean green card holders The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has reached an agreement with a Miami-based company over claims the latter discriminated against immigrants. According to the DOJ, the agreement was reached with Brickell Financial Services Motor Club, Inc, otherwise known as Road America Motor Club, Inc (Road America). It resolved the department's investigation into whether the company violated the US Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The department concluded, based on its investigation, that Road America routinely

requested lawful Caribbean and other permanent residents show their Permanent Resident Cards, otherwise known as green cards, to prove their work authorization but did not request specific documents from US citizens. Lawful permanent residents often have the same work authorization documents as US citizens, and may choose acceptable documents other than a Permanent Resident Card to prove they are authorized to work. Human Resource specialist Dawnette Alberga of a Fort Lauderdale job placement agency, says other acceptable documents for employment purposes for US citizens and permanent residents, include a Social Security card, and valid driver's license.

The DOJ said their investigation further revealed that Road America required lawful permanent resident employees to re-establish their work authorization when their Permanent Resident Cards expired, even though US federal rules prohibit this practice. The anti-discrimination provision of the INA prohibits employers from subjecting employees to unnecessary documentary demands based on the employees' citizenship or national origin. “When verifying the work authorization of employees, employers may not erect unnecessary barriers based on employees' citizenship or national origin,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division.

“Employers must ensure they are aware of their legal obligations to avoid discrimination, and we applaud Road America for committing itself to do so through this settlement,” he added. Under the settlement, the DOJ said Road America will pay a civil penalty of US$34,200 and US$1,044 to compensate an unidentified worker who lost wages due to unfair documentary practices. The DOJ said Road America has also agreed to: post notices informing workers about their rights under the INA's anti-discrimination provision; train their human resources personnel, and be subject to departmental monitoring and reporting requirements.

SOUTH FLORIDA

Federal and state budget cuts could have negative impact Budget cuts proposed in President Donald Trump and Florida's 2017/18 budgets, could have negative impact on programs for South Florida's low-income residents. The recent budget submitted by Trump to the US Congress for approval, includes a proposal for eliminating the Community Development Block Grant program, initiated in1974 by President Gerald Ford. These grants have served as economic lifeline for several lowincome communities in South Florida, including Overtown and Liberty City in Miami-Dade County, and Sistrunk in Broward, In the 2016/17 budget approved by Congress, $54 million was approved for CDB grants provided through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for South Florida communities. Over the years, the grants have been utilized to help provide affordable housing, improve community infrastructure, homeless shelters, assist seniors, the disabled and domestic violence victims. Trump's proposed budget includes a 13 percent cut to HUD's budget from $46.9 billion in 2016/17 to $40.7 billion, effective October 1. However, the Trump administration has tried to justify the elimination of CDB grants by claiming the program doesn't target the poorest members of the community, and has not shown real results.

These cuts are proposed against a critical housing crises in South Florida where cities and counties are struggling to provide thousands of low-income residents with affordable housing, and improve deplorable housing conditions. Rudolph Belnavis, a Miami-Dade County official involved in the administration of CDB programs said, “Eliminating the program would be devastating. It may not be heavily promoted but these funds have consistently provided vital services to lowincome residents, especially in finding housing, and paying rent. It's doubtful the state could fill the gap if federal funds are removed.” Meanwhile, as the Florida Legislature tries to structure a

state budget acceptable to the House and Senate, there are proposals to reduce funding for Medicaid, a health lifeline for the poor. The budget proposed by the House would reduce Medicaid funding by $621.8 million, and $257.5 million by the Senate. South Miami's Dr. Barry Ledgister is concerned about the proposed cuts to Medicaid by the state. “Daily across South Florida, hospitals and clinics are choked with low-income patients, mainly children, on Medicaid. Even with the benefit these people find it very hard to cope. How can they cope any, if the state or the Feds reduce Medicaid benefits? This would also be devastating to hospital emergency room services.” Reduction in Medicaid would directly affect public hospital funding as they would receive less in reimbursements for services provided to patients who normally received Medicaid. “I am fed up that every year attempts are made to balance Florida budgets at the expenses of healthcare, and other benefits, to the poor,” Dr. Ledgister said. “I'm looking forward to Representative Trujillo doing the right thing for the health of the poor.” Republican Representative Carlos Trujillo is the budget chairman in the Florida House. Miami-Dade County has a long waiting list for housing assistance, said Michael Hernandez, a county spokesman. Ending those two programs would result in a loss of $13 million for the county's public housing and community development department, a 5 percent cut.

Bahamians go to the polls May 10 Prime Minister Perry Christie on Tuesday announced May 10 as the date for the general elections . The announcement came as the Parliament was dissolved paving the way for the poll. “It is now left to you, the citizenry of our beloved nation to decide who will fill those seats in the next House of assembly,” Christie said. Christie led the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) to victory in the 2012 general election defeating the then ruling Free National Movement (FNM) for control of the 41 seat Parliament. The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) also contested the poll, but failed to win a seat.

Grenada in support of Venezuela Grenada has assured Venezuela that it will stand behind the country “no matter what.” Foreign Affairs Minister Elvin Nimrod, addressing the 40th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two countries last weekend, said Grenada also understands the situation confronting the Spanishspeaking country. “Grenada stands behind you in solidarity no matter what…We understand the present challenge and we want to tell you that we believe your cause is right and just and we will stand behind you no matter what,” he told the ceremony whose guest of honour was Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez, who thanked Grenada for its years of friendship. Nimrod said that Venezuela has contributed to the country’s development, since the relationship was established by Eric Gairy administration in 1977.

Jamaica praised for reducing tourist harassment The US-based Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) has hailed Jamaica's success in significantly reducing visitor harassment, saying it augurs well for future relations. A government statement issued following a three-day fact finding trip to the island by a FCCA team led by President, Michelle Paige, quoted her as saying that Jamaica has done a tremendous job in tackling the problem head on, noting that there were clear signs that guests could move about freely without fear of being followed or badgered. What we have seen over the past three days during our visit to the main ports and also to some of the attractions has been truly amazing,” she said, adding that “Jamaica, with all its natural beauty and wonderful people, has always been a very popular destination. “The problem is that a lot of the guests have either been complaining or have been reluctant to experience the product because of some of the things they had to go through. That was a major turnoff and certainly was bad for business,” she added. Paige also said that this threatened to derail the special relationship the FCCA has shared with

ground in Jamaica to see what exactly is going on. “We can safely say that we are leaving more impressed than we have ever been. If what we saw here over the past three days can be sustained, then you guys have every reason to be optimistic,” Paige stated. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett welcomed the FCCA delegation's visit to get a first-hand view of the Government's antiharassment efforts, which he said “clearly have been bearing fruits.”

Jamaica for over five decades. Cruise officials, she indicated, remain unconvinced that the situation had changed, despite representation made by a high powered delegation, led by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, which visited Miami nearly six months ago. “So we decided to come and see for ourselves; as the saying goes the proof is in the (eating of the) pudding. We decided to do something, which we haven't done in 20-odd years, and that is to take a high-level team on the

Opposition leader prevented from entering Parliament Leader of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, who says he was barred from entering Parliament on Tuesday, has again called for the removal of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit from office. “That is what we are being reduced to today in Dominica…You understand why Skerrit must go. Skerrit must absolutely go because of this

nonsensical behavior in a democracy. “You have people standing up in the Parliament building, in the compound telling the Leader of the Opposition he has no right in the compound of the Parliament, he must leave,” said Linton in a post on his Facebook page. He said he had gone to the compound in an attempt to enter the building to retrieve documents he needed for a meeting with the Electoral Commission consultants from the Commonwealth Secretariat who are visiting Dominica.

“They are denying me access to my office. I cannot go to my office in the Parliament building. They tell me to get off the compound” he said Linton has been leading the opposition efforts to get Skerrit out of office claiming that the government has been engaged in corrupt activities linked to the controversial Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP) through which foreign nationals are provided with citizenship of the island in return for making a substantial investment in the country.

How do you celebrate Easter? Is the Easter Bunny visiting? Denise: Lauderdale Lakes – I go to church. That's about it really, since childhood. I never believed in the Easter Bunny, really, only the candy. I got candy as a kid. I do have a daughter and same for her when she was younger, but not now. She's 13, she's a big girl now. Easter is really about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Kevin: Jamaica/Sunrise – I do go to church on Easter Sunday, and I celebrate it my Caribbean way with bun and cheese. I don't have kids. As a child, I celebrated it with fish, bun and cheese, church. The Easter Bunny? Good marketing strategy. Owen: Jamaica/Coral Springs – I don't celebrate Easter in any special way. As a child, when Easter come, you're not going to light any stove. Back home, we fry fish the day before, and Easter day we eat fish and bun, or bun and cheese, but here it's kind of different. Here, we have a different type of mood, you have to adjust yourself to a different situation around you. With my kids, no Easter Bunny! Christina: Lauderhill – I go to church. My Mom, she cooks Easter dinner, so we go to church and we have dinner afterwards, so we just stay home and hang out with the family. As a child, we celebrated it the same; at church we would have Easter egg hunts and stuff like that. I have a little daughter, I would continue that with her. I don't think the Easter Bunny is real, but I probably wouldn't tell her that. Jerri: Sunrise – I don't celebrate holidays. My family is Jehovah's Witness, so we don't really celebrate holidays because it's man-made holiday. We feel like you should spend time with your family every day, other than a certain specific day. I've never celebrated holidays. The Easter Bunny thing FAKE! Just for the kids, of course, it's not real… Make them excited about Easter. Denise H: Ft. Lauderdale – We have the family over, we cook, we hide Easter eggs for the children, we talk, play games, go outside, have fun with the kids, and eat a lot. I've always had an Easter Bunny since I was a little girl. My Mom always said that there was an Easter Bunny, if you were a good girl, he hides your Easter basket and then you would have to go find it. I love the Easter Bunny. And it's all about Jesus Christ our Lord when He came and He rose from the dead; when He came back to save us. Jessica: Ft. Lauderdale – Easter is about family values. During the day, having an Easter egg hunt and then later on in the afternoon, church and then after church that's when the family has dinner and enjoys everybody and play games and laugh and have a good time, but it's also about Jesus Christ being reborn. I have a daughter who loves bunnies so she is going to love Easter when she gets to do the Easter egg hunt. I think that Easter is a very important holiday because it's about family. Claudia: Puerto Rico – For me Easter is probably the most important holiday because it is the day that Christ resurrected and allowed us to choose Him, choose eternal life, to choose heaven, and to choose freedom from our guilt, shame and sin. Rudy: Pembroke Pines/Jamaica – I celebrate Easter by observing the entire Holy Week that begins Palm Sunday and ends on Resurrection Sunday. First I acknowledge the Passover - I fast for the entire week, worship on Good Friday where Christ was crucified for our sins, and on Resurrection Sunday I go to sunrise service. As Christians, it's our most sacred time of year. There is no such thing as an Easter bunny, there's not even the word Easter in the bible. In Jamaica we eat a lot of bun and cheese and fish.

One strike won't do

P.O.Box 551712 Davie, FL 33355 advertising@cnweeklynews.com www.cnweeklynews.com

Since the civil war in Syria escalated in 2011/12 with President Bashar Assad taking aggressive, brutal measures against rebels and innocent Syrians, the Western world has been reluctant to intervene. In 2013, Assad crossed the 'red line' set by former President Barack Obama and launched a chemical attack against the rebels, resulting in the deaths of over 1,400 people. For days, Obama contemplated a military response against Assad's brutality. For several reasons, Obama decided against military intervention. One, he didn't have the support of America's main ally, Britain, as the British parliament voted down any involvement. Two, the US Congress was reluctant to vote when Obama sought its approval for military involvement. Third, then Secretary of State John Kerry brokered a plan with Russia that ostensibly had Assad removing his stockpile of chemical weapons. Obviously, Obama trusted the arrangement brokered by Kerry. However, months later Putin, instead of using his influence with Assad to quell the civil war, entered the fray as Assad's ally, along with Iran. Last week, when Assad launched sarin gas bombs against rebels and innocent citizens, it appeared Putin duped the US when in 2013 Russia confirmed Assad had removed the chemical weapon stockpile. Televised images of people, including infants, dying from the effects of the poisoned gas were heart-wrenching. Reacting to Assad's latest atrocity, on the evening of April 6, President Donald Trump authorized a missile attack against a Syrian airfield used by aircrafts that dropped the chemical bombs on the rebels. Two days before the missile strike, Trump and members of his administration hinted at reaction against Assad. The attack was surprising; especially with Trump's seemingly close relationship with Putin. In 2013, Trump had also cautioned Obama about getting involved in a military intervention with Assad, cautioning such action could herald “World War III.” The suddenness of Trump's action fueled conspiracy theories that the strike against Syria was another attempt to deviate attention from investigations into collusion between Trump's campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 presidential elections. Notwithstanding those theories, the big question is, 'what's next'? Does Trump have a clear strategy in dealing with Assad and the Syrian civil war? Assuming there's such a strategy, doesn't it pit the US military might against Russia and Iran? Is Trump ready to send large compliments of US troops to fight in Syria, or, would the strategy mean escalated air strikes? Does the strategy involve getting rid of Assad?

Since Trump said he was so emotionally moved by images of “beautiful babies” dying from the chemical poison attack, would he be now prepared to help create 'safe zones' in Syria to protect innocent citizens, especially since he's not inclined to allow Syrian refugees to enter the US? These are questions that have arisen since Trump's attack against Syria. But there is another interesting question. Was the attack meant to show Trump is a stronger, more decisive commander-in-chief than President Obama? If so, that would be a reckless reason to initiate an international conflict. Or, was the attack to show the US is not reluctant to use its military might against Assad and his allies? If that was so, then the US' attack was similar to a student hitting the school bully with a glancing blow that only provoked the bully to be more aggressive. Indicative of this similarity is within hours after the attack, Syrian planes took off from the same airfield. Moreover, these planes dropped more bombs over the same territory that the chemical bombs were dropped. Incidentally, this begs another question. Why didn't the US missile strike seek to destroy the runways at the Syrian airfield? Trump's explanation that runways are easy to repair doesn't seem like a justifiable military explanation. Although most Americans are revolted by the images of Assad's chemical attack, they remain wary of entering another war. But, Trump has struck a blow that could result in retaliation by Assad, and Syria's allies. Americans have the right to know what is Trump's strategy if such retaliation comes, or if Assad continues to butcher Syrians. One thing is evident. One missile strike against Syria by the US won't do.

LA SECTION HAITIENNE

Moise urges MP's to work towards country's development President Jovenel Moise has urged Parliamentarians to cooperate with his administration for the socioeconomic development of the country, regarded as one of the poorest in the western hemisphere. At ceremony where Prime Minister Dr. Jack Guy Lafontant presented the 2017 legislative agenda that included at least 50 draft laws to the President of the Senate, Youri Latortue, on Monday, Moise said that it was necessary for there to be cooperation among all stakeholders for the benefit of the entire population. The draft laws focus on improving the business climate and economic development, State organization, land-use planning and environment, and national security. “After decades…after centuries of turpitude and destructive disorder, we have today, together, the possibility to restore it standing in the honor and dignity of each of its daughters, each of its son,” Moise said. “Today we are on the tightrope. We are at the crossroads. We are not entitled to error. We cannot pretend that we did not know. We must and can move the country forward. Through stubborn work and humility in the memory of our ancestors and our responsibilities in relation to our offspring, we must ensure that the law brings stability for the nation and security in the management of public affairs.” He said that by making the right decisions, “the future generation will appreciate the actions we are going to take in the direction of the national interest. The impartial story will acknowledge that we have deserved well of our country”.

Moise said that one area where the need for innovation is particularly desired, it is that of the organization of the work of the institutions of State power. “I repeat, the only reason that justifies the organization of State power as it is in a Republic like ours is the promotion of collective well-being. It is through innovation, that is to say, by our ability to do things differently and to do better when we do not have more resources than we will come out as a people,” he said, noting that “this country has forged itself into the clay of these unfavorable circumstances.

Government warns of fake media pages for PM and other officials

The Haitian government has called for “appropriate investigations” after fake social media websites naming Prime Minister Dr. Jack Guy Lafontant and the President of the Superior Council of the National Police (CSPN) have gone into circulation here. The creation of false accounts on social networks, using names and photos of people to circulate malicious messages, is a transnational crime,” according to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister. It said that the posts on social media contain the “full name, as well as photographs of the archives of the Prime

Minister, Dr. Jack Guy Lafontant, also President of the Superior Council of the National Police (CSPN)”. Prime Minister Lafontant has called on the technical and competent authorities “to carry out appropriate investigations to identify counterfeiters and to deal with them with the utmost rigor.” He reminded users that his official account on the social media, including Facebook, “is doubly authenticated by the username “@jglafontant”, as well as by his name Jack Guy Lafontant checked-by a “V” of blue color.”

President describes attack on presidential motorcade as act of terrorism The Office of the President of Haiti has described as “a terrorist act” last weekend's attack on a presidential motorcade returning from the Artibonite department as preparations continue for the launch of the caravan of change scheduled for May 1. Angry demonstrators reportedly set up barricades protesting the decision taken by former president Michel Martelly to divide the commune of Arcahaie in two. President Jovenel Moise, who was sworn into office in February replacing Martelly, was not hurt during the attack last Friday night with The Office of the Presidency congratulating “the specialized units of the National Police of Haiti in charge of the security of the Head of State for their promptness and professionalism”. The statement also reminded “everyone that the establishment of a democratic society can only be achieved through the principles enacted by the law”. The police have not confirmed reports that the security detail of President Moise exchanged gunfire with unknown gunmen during the incident, which the statement of the Office of the Presidency described as an “ambush made against the presidential motorcade”. It further described the incident as that “of a terrorist act. “These acts against the life of the President of the Republic committed by unidentified individuals, are a serious threat against public peace and State of safety. They will be subject of a thorough and rigorous investigation by the competent authorities with a view to finding their perpetrators and bringing them before the judicial authorities appointed for that purpose,” the statement added.

To assist students identify a career, the retired US Department of Defense administrator points to three factors – aptitude, interest, and personality. The end result? Students accept that not everyone can become engineers or doctors, and begin to explore and focus on alternate fields. Rose-Spencer says it's vital to “help students to develop their true potential. There are students who are clear what they want to become. On the other hand, others either are confused or have no idea about their career preferences. Career coaching helps students make the right choice regarding course enrollment and the accomplishment of career goals.” Because they lack clarity of what they want to achieve, some students do not know their career path nor required academic/course qualification. RoseSpencer is focused on assisting them in obtaining a clear-cut view of what they can expect from various

educational courses. As well as training at community colleges, trade schools, or apprenticeship programs. She believes many students drop out of college due to little support in understanding the requirements for college programs. Rose-Spencer's pillars of career success are: --- Learning more about yourself: Gain awareness and knowledge of self by assessing interests, abilities/ transferable skills, values, and personality. --- Gaining educational and occupational information: Identify educational and career-related resources. Generate career options and alternative plans. --- Learning about decision-making and career planning. Learn decision-making styles and strategies applied to careers and achievable goals. --- Conducting a job search. Discuss and learn how to create and maintain a professional image. Learn how to write resumes. --- Applying to vocational schools or training programs. Identify programs that match interests. Bunny Wailer launches museum Reggae legend Bunny Wailer launched his museum in the Washington Gardens area of Kingston, Jamaica on April 9.

Reggie Wilson's Citizen by The Fist & Heel Dance Company hits Miami Citizen, with Reggie Wilson/Fist & Heel Performance Group will showcase their unique talent on Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22, at the Miami Dade County Auditorium. The event which will commence at 8:30pm on both nights, will see the performance group draw from the cultures of Africans in the Americas combined with post-modern elements. Wilson says he will use his own personal movement style to create what he calls "post-African/Neo-HooDoo Modern dances." In Citizen, Wilson asks, “What does it mean to belong?” and “What does it mean to not want to belong?” core questions of his investigations for the evening-length dance work.

The singer, an original member of The Wailers with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, turned 70 the following day. "It means a lot...A museum relates to things an artiste has done over the years. We have a Bob Marley Museum an' a Peter Tosh Museum so it's appropriate for me open one at this time," he said. The site that houses the museum is special to Wailer. It was owned by his father, Thaddeus 'Shut' Livingston who died in 1991 on Wailer's birthday. Photos, original album covers and a document signifying a change in The Wailers Tuff Gang record company to Tuff Gong, are some of the pieces on show at the museum. Bunny Wailer's awards including three Grammys, his boyhood bamboo guitar and a gramophone that belonged to his father, are also displayed. The museum launch is part of a series marking the singer/songwriter's birthday. He is the sole survivor of the famed Wailers troika. Marley died from cancer in May 1981 at age 36 while Tosh was murdered at his St Andrew home in September 1987 at age 42. Three of Wailer's children, Tamara, Sasha and Asadenaki, and grandson Mark, attended the opening. Stranger Cole, Fred Locks, Capleton and Dre Tosh were some of the artistes at the event.

Rihanna takes shinning bright like a diamond to a whole new level The Barbadian-born international pop star has teamed up with Swiss luxury jewellery and watch designer Chopard to introduce the new “Rihanna Loves Chopard” collection of high jewels that will debut in stores this summer. The collection of pieces is set to blend urban chic with classic glamour. “Rihanna and I collaborated closely on the collections, so you can feel her unstoppable energy, strong creativity, and inherent sense of design in every essence”, said Swiss jeweler's co-

president and creative director Caroline Scheufele. “With her unique style, she redefines the way people see and wear jewelry” Scheufele said in a statement from the company. “I have always been in love with Chopard's exquisite jewellery, so to actually design collections with them is something I still can't believe,” Rihanna said. “It was a really incredible process and I learned so much. I can't wait for everyone to see it.”

The first collection will feature nine pieces crafted from 18 carat rose ethical gold mixed with a jungle-green shade hand-picked by Rihanna, will be unveiled in full later this month and will be available to purchase in June. The second range- The Haute Joaillerie collection- will debut next month as part of the 70th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, to celebrate Chopard's 20th year as the official partner of the world-famous movie event.

Inner Circle looking forward to 50th Inner Circle, the popular South Florida reggae band, celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. The band is planning to make a big to-do about the landmark. A documentary tracing their roots to Kingston, Jamaica, their years with singer Jacob Miller and fruitful period in Miami, is in the works. A book and stage musical are also part of

Inner Circle's golden anniversary plans. The band is led by brothers Roger and Lewis who have called South Florida home for over thirty years. They formed Inner Circle in 1968 with Ibo Cooper and Stephen 'Cat' Coore who left after five years to start Third World. The musical's tentative title is Tenement Yard, after one of the popular songs Inner Circle did with Miller who died in 1980 in a motor accident in Kingston. It will premier in Kingston in May, 2018 to mark Miller's 66th birthday. A new generation of fans discovered Inner Circle in the 1990s when they struck paydirt with the hit songs, Bad Boys and Sweat. They are also owners of the Circle House recording studio in Miami, where the biggest names in pop music, such as Pitbull, Sean Paul, Pharrell and Beyonce have recorded.

Van Niekerk dreams of breaking Bolt's world records In some circles, world 400 meters record holder Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa is seen as the successor to wunderkind sprinter Usain Bolt. While admitting he will never be the showman Bolt is, van Niekerk believes there are similarities between himself and the world's fastest man. "A lot of people say, 'Wayde, you need to be more of an entertainer. I am not that type but I see qualities I share with Usain Bolt, and that brings a form of comfort even if it won't sell T-shirts," the quarter-miler told The Times on Tuesday.

“I am a 100, 200 and 400 (meters) athlete so I will dream for every record there is,” Van Niekerk said. “What sort of Carter would I be if I didn't?” athlete Van Niekerk trained alongside Bolt in Jamaica. At last year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he shattered American Michael Johnson's 17-year-old 400 meters world record. From the unfavorable lane eight, he ran 43.03 seconds compared to 43.18 by Johnson. Van Niekerk is the only athlete to run 44 seconds for the 400 meters, 20 seconds for the 200 meters and 10 seconds for the 100 meters. He hopes to eclipse Bolt's world marks (9.58 seconds in 100 meters; 19.19 seconds 200 meters) set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

coupled with the party off it, will generate even greater interest for the upcoming season.” Broward Commissioner Dale Holness, who was involved in promoting last year's tournament, endorsed O'Donohoe's pledge. “I welcome the return of international cricket to Broward County. As was proven during last year's games at the Central Broward Stadium, cricket and sports generally have a very positive economic impact on the local economy. It's my goal, as a county commissioner to make every effort to bring more sports to Broward, and all South Florida, to grow jobs and the economy.” Holness revealed that management at Central Broward Stadium is seeking a manager to develop cricket in South Florida. This post should be filled in weeks. City of Lauderhill Mayor Richard Kaplan is also looking forward to the frenetic pace of T20 cricket returning to his town. “The return of the Caribbean Premier League also known as the 'Biggest Party in Sports' to Lauderhill has many people excited including myself! We warmly welcome the players, officials, and many spectators of CPLT20 2017 to a place we call the North Caribbean and the Cricket Capital of the United States of America – Lauderhill!”

Jamaica qualify for semis with win over Combined Islands An exciting batting performance by Jamaica fast bowler Keyonie Gayle, sent his team into the semi-finals of the Lauderhill T20 night cricket tournament with a narrow one wicket win over the Combined Islands at the Lauderhill Sports Park on Saturday. The Jamaicans were teetering on 153-9 needing another 22 to win. But Gayle was in no mood to hang around and played an innings worthy of a top order batsman as he slammed

seven boundaries off the first seven deliveries he faced to don 32 not out in the 17th over. The bowler turned batsman slapped half Yorkers for four and launched good length deliveries out of the ground onto Oakland Park Boulevard or into nearby lakes. Gayle's boundaries were elegant, his hitting was positive, and he was determined to take his team to victory. He was supported by Omari Williams with 49 and O Jones who scored 28. Combined Islands top order batmen got good starts but failed to carry on and pressure the Jamaicans with a bigger total. Joey Pierre top

scored with 32 while G. White chipped in with 26 not out, A. Scott 24, R. Ebanks 24 and D. James 17. Bowling for Jamaica, G. Campbell claimed 2 for 27, O. Brown 1/23, D. Hyatt 1/28, G. Wallace 1/28 and O. Williams 1/30. Bowling for Combined Islands, David Braithwaite bagged 2 for 27, R. Ebanks 1/21, G.White 1/23 and A. Scott 1/31. The competition continues on Saturday, April 22 with India versus the Lauderhill Select XI followed by Pakistan versus Trinidad and Tobago at All matches are played at the Lauderhill Sports Park, 7500 W. Not only was she honored women's world player of the year for five consecutive years from 2006 to 2010, she has appeared in four FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments and the last four editions of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament with Brazil. Her many individual achievements include winning the adidas Golden Ball as the best player at both the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship Thailand 2004 and FIFA Women's World Cup China 2007, as well as the adidas Golden Shoe as the top scorer at China 2007 with seven goals.

Shoaib Malik's classy ton led Pakistan to a series win over the West Indies in a One Day International clash between both cricketing teams in Guyana on Tuesday. Malik's ninth one-day international century means the Pakistanis have booked the final automatic qualification place for the 2019 World Cup at the expense of the Windies. It was a come from behind win for the visitors who won the second ODI at Providence Stadium on Sunday and wrapped up another series win at the same stadium two days later. It has been 26 years since the Windies have defeated Pakistan in an ODI series. The home team could only muster 233-9, despite 71 from Shai Hope and Jason Mohammed's 59. Pacer Shannon Gabriel was back from injury and gave the West Indies a glimmer of hope after he removed Kamran Akmal with the first ball of Pakistan's innings, but Mohammad Hafeez (81) and Malik – who hit a six to win and finish 101 not out – steadied the ship after they were 36-3. Pakistan won the Twenty20 series 3-1 and will now turn their attention to coming out on top in the Test series, while the Windies will be licking their wounds and must go back to the drawing board.
