Florida Senate passes bill to end Disney self-government The Florida Senate last week passed a bill to repeal a law allowing Walt Disney World to operate a private government over its properties in the state, escalating a feud with the entertainment giant over its opposition to what critics call the “Don't Say Gay” law.

The proposal could have huge tax implications for Disney, whose series of theme parks have over the decades transformed Orlando into one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Democrats have warned that the move could cause local homeowners to get hit with big tax bills if they have to absorb bond debt from Disney — although such details have not

The measures, pushed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, comes as he battles with Disney after the company's criticism of a new GOP law barring instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade as well as instruction that is not “age appropriate or developmentally appropriate.” The bill will eliminate the Reedy Creek Improvement District, as the Disney government is known, as well as a handful of other similar districts by June 2023. The measure leaves room for the districts to be reestablished, with a Republican legislative leader signaling a likely restructuring of a 1967 deal that lawmakers struck with the company that allows it to provide services such as zoning, fire protection, utilities, and infrastructure. “By doing it this early, we have until next June or continues on B4 – Disney bill passes

ELAINE THOMPSON-HERAH

The First Jamaican Female Athlete to Win Laureus Award Olympic triple gold medalist and the fastest woman alive Elaine ThompsonHerah on Sunday created history by becoming the first Jamaican female athlete to win the prestigious Laureus Sportswoman Award for 2022. The Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year is an annual award honoring the achievements of individual women from the world of sports. The awards are presented by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, a global organization involved in more than 150 charity projects supporting 500,000 young people. The awards are considered highly prestigious and are frequently referred to as the sporting equivalent of the Oscars. The 29-year-old ThompsonHerah won the award following a historic 2021 season, in which she became the first woman in Olympic history to win the 100m and 200m titles at consecutive Olympic Games. She won the 100m in 10.61, breaking the previous record of 10.62 set by American Florence Griffith Joyner in 1988. She then won the 200m in a lifetime best of 21.53, the secondfastest time in history. She won a third gold medal as a member of

Jamaica's 4x100m relay team that set a national record of 41.02, the thirdfastest time in history. Following the Olympics, she ran 10.54, the second-fastest time in history, to win the 100m at the Diamond League meeting in Oregon and then ran times of 10.64 and 10.65 to become the only woman in the history of the sport to run the 100m in under 10.70 four times. “I really don't think I can really express how it feels to be nominated amongst these wonderful and super talented ladies across their respective disciplines but to think that I could come out as the chosen winner of this

prestigious award is just mindblowing for me,” Thompson-Herah said after receiving the award. “I would like to thank the Laureus Sports Academy for this wonderful recognition. I want to thank all my friends and family who have continuously supported me throughout my journey.” The only other Jamaican to ever win the Laureus Sports Award is the fastest man alive, retired Sprinter Usain Bolt. He took home the award in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2017. The Laureus Award is just another on the list of accolades that Thompson-Herah has received for

the best reason of her career. She was named the Track and Field News Female Athlete of the Year, won the Female World Athlete of the Year award at the World Athletics Awards, and named the AIPS Best Female Athlete of 2021. She also received a diplomatic passport from the Government of Jamaica and was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Technology in Jamaica. Those who have been tuned in to Elaine's career from the start were not surprised her dominance, even with a series of injuries which seemingly stalled her progress. The Banana Ground native ran track for the Christiana High School and later Manchester High School. After high school, she was recruited to the University of Technology, Jamaica by Paul Francis, brother of MVP Track Club head coach Stephen Francis. With MVP coaching, Thompson's times started improving steadily. In 2014, Thompson won her first intercollegiate title, placed fifth in 11.26s at the national championships, and had a seasonal best of 11.17s. Thompson made her international breakthrough in 2015. She repeated as Jamaican intercollegiate champion in March and broke 11 seconds for the first time at the UTech Classic, running a world-leading 10.92 seconds. She then ran 10.97 seconds at the Jamaica International

Invitational in Kingston, defeating a field that included Blessing Okagbare and Allyson Felix. In 2016, Thompson-Herah set a personal best in the 100m with a time of 10.70s, winning the event at the Jamaican Championships for that year's Olympic games. In the 100m final of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Thompson-Herah won the gold medal with a time of 10.71s, ahead of Tori Bowie and the 2012 London Olympics winner Shelly-Ann FraserPryce. In the 200m final, she won her second gold, clocking 21.78s. She was the first female Jamaican sprinter to win the 100m and 200m at one Olympic Games and the seventh overall. She also ran in the national 4×100m relay team which placed second, thus leaving Rio de Janeiro with three medals. In 2019, Thompson-Herah pulled out of the Doha World Championships due to a nagging Achilles injury that had bothered her since 2018. This was just after a fourth-place finish in the 100m final. She returned to the track in 2021, ready to silence those who had written her off. In 2021, after wrapping her most successful track season to date, Thompson-Herah announced that she was leaving the MVP Track Club and would no longer be coached by Stephen Francis. She is now being represented by Andisports management.

Grenadians Await Imminent Announcement of Election Date Grenadians are awaiting the imminent announcement for the date for the next general election after Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell said he will be approaching Governor General Dame Cécile La Grenade to dissolve Parliament. Mitchell, addressing a meeting of his ruling New National Party (NNP) on April 24 gave no indication as to when he will approach the head of state, but there has been widespread speculation that the polls, constitutionally due by 2023, will be held this year. “As we move forward, I want to say, there are two stages for a general election. The Prime Minister has to call on the governor general to dissolve parliament – that is the first stage,” said Mitchell, whose NNP has won all 15 seats in the Parliament in the last two general elections. “In other words, the minute I do that, the minute that the governor general issued that proclamation for the dissolution of Parliament, I am no longer a representative, I will still be the prime minister… I am explaining to you what the process is, so very soon, very soon, it might be a little sleep and wake you don't know, I will ask the governor general to dissolve the Parliament of this country,” he told supporters in the parish of St Patrick where the party launched its candidates for St Patrick West and St Patrick East constituencies. “I am making it clear tonight therefore, all constituencies get your canvas report ready, some say I am calling it in May, some say in June, some say when Santa Claus coming, well I am telling you that your election date will be announced soon,” said Mitchell, who traditionally announces the election date at a political meeting in a national broadcast. Mitchell, one of the longest serving prime ministers in the Caribbean, has already hinted that the upcoming general election will be his last, and the NNP is expected to face a rejuvenated opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that recently elected attorney Dickon Mitchell as its leader.

Antigua's PM Urges Royals to Help in Reparation Fight Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called on two visiting members of Britain's royal family to assist the region in their fight for reparation against the slave trade. He told the Earl and Countess of Wessex at a special Cabinet meeting on April 25 that they should use their influence towards building bridges towards reparatory justice. Prince Edward, the youngest of child of Queen Elizabeth and his wife are on a Caribbean tour to mark the Queen's platinum jubilee. No-confidence Motion filed against St. Kitts PM A motion of no confidence has been filed against Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Timothy Harris, whose coalition Team Unity government faces an uphill task in keeping its majority in the Parliament. Informed sources told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the motion was filed on Monday and follows efforts by the factions within the government that was re-elected to office in 2022 to heal the rift.

Last week, seven legislators linked to the government wrote to Governor General, Sir Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton, indicating that the prime minister does not command the support of the majority of elected members in the National Assembly. But the Head of State responded indicating that he is awaiting “formal advice” on the situation and would “revert to you at the earliest”. Harris has himself called on the

population to be aware of “certain misgivings in the public domain with respect to the issues raised by the Team Unity partners. “I wish to assure you, as your Prime Minister that the country remains stable and every effort will be made to maintain the peace and tranquility of our beloved Federation,” he added. Deepening CARICOM/Africa Relations not an Overnight Thing P resident Paul Kagame of Rwanda paid official visits to Jamaica and Barbados last week. He was in Jamaica from April 13-15 and in Barbados from April 15-17. In both countries, President Kagame spoke of the need to strengthen the direct contact between the Caribbean and Africa. This has been an expressed goal of CARICOM Community (CARICOM) leaders over the last few years and especially since their attendance at the African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (now OACPS) Summit in Kenya in December 2019. Getting to this goal of a deeper, direct relationship between CARICOM and Its Member States and the African Union (AU) and its member states, in my view, will take planning and work to get it right. It will not be an overnight thing. As I pointed out in my article of February 5, 2020, on “Strengthening CARICOM/Africa Relations”, the CARICOM member states and AU members mainly meet in the multilateral arena at the United Nations and, in meetings of OACPS and the Commonwealth. The first direct Summit between Africa and CARICOM was held virtually on September 7, 2021. CARICOM Today reported that at this Summit, CARICOM and African Leaders committed to strengthening collaboration and unity, increasing trade, investment, and people-to-people engagement. There was support for establishing a CARICOM/Africa public-private partnership; establishing a joint CARICOM/AU electronic mass media platform; establishing an African-Caribbean Forum, and drafting an Africa-Caribbean Charter and memorandum of understanding (MOU) to underpin their relationship. The original idea had been to have an in-person meeting at the time of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Rwanda in 2020. CHOGM is now to be held at the same venue in the week of June 20 this year. I think that CARICOM and the AU could be looking at holding some form of in-person meeting on the margins of

this CHOGM. The current AU Chair for 2022/23 is President Macky Sall of Senegal. I am assuming that some progress is being made in advancing outcomes from the 2021 CARICOM/Africa Summit. It is not in the Belize Heads Communiqué. On the diplomatic front, since December 2019, Barbados has opened a High Commission in Accra, Ghana and accredited a High Commissioner in Nairobi, Kenya. These are the only additions to CARICOM Member States’ thin diplomatic presence on the African continent. In March 2021, Jamaica established diplomatic relations with Togo and Liberia.

Expanding trade and investment opportunities It seems that some progress is being made in promoting trade between CARICOM and African countries. From news reports out of Guyana, I am reading that in 2021, a Nigerian, Onoja Atta Onoja, established the Africa Caribbean Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry in Georgetown, Guyana, to expand trade between the Caribbean and Africa. It seems that the focus is on trade with Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. An article in Guyana’s Stabroek News dated March 25, 2022, reports that this Chamber has begun trade in commodities between Guyana and Nigeria, with the support of the Nigerian High Commission in Port of Spain. This Chamber intends to have direct flights between Africa and the Caribbean by the end of this year. It may be recalled that there was an initial direct flight between Jamaica and Nigeria in December 2020. It is also reported that there has been a flurry of activity between Guyana and Ghana related to oil and gas in the past year. A report from Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation dated December 7, 2021 states that three agreements were signed between the countries – a framework agreement on cooperation, an MOU on cooperation in the petroleum

sector, and another on mutual cooperation in investment promotion. A recent news report out of Barbados also states that the country has sent a first shipment of goods valued at US$20, 000 to Ghana and is optimistic that this will be the first of many. There was a Jamaica/Nigeria Joint Commission meeting in Abuja in February. An article in the Jamaica Observer on Sunday, April 17, also expresses optimism about Africa as a market for Jamaican goods taking account of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and the potential for growth in Africa. As I said in my 2020 article, there are still issues to be addressed to make trade and investment viable in the medium to long term between African and CARICOM countries. There are issues of transportation, actually having regular, profitable direct flights and shipping between African and the Caribbean; understanding the business culture in African countries – doing the necessary groundwork to assess African markets, prioritizing markets and goods and services for trade; and considering such matters as distribution chains. It must be understood that AfCFTA is an intraAfrica free trade agreement. Countries entering the African economic space to trade will still face tariffs and other trade barriers unless there is a negotiated free trade agreement between AfCFTA members and CARICOM. There are also the possibilities for trade in services, in tourism and the creative industries, recalling that Caribbean service providers must be able to compete in the African market, not only with Africans, but with service providers from other countries. This also raises a need for visa abolition agreements e.g. with Nigeria. The CARICOM private sector and media, beyond sentiment, have to be interested in doing business in Africa, in promoting South/South cooperation, and in exploring and finding real opportunities for trade and investment.

Suspect in Haiti Presidential Slaying to be Extradited to US A former Haitian senator who is one of the main suspects in the slaying of former President Jovenel Moïse has agreed to be extradited to the U.S. to face charges, his attorney told The Associated Press. It wasn't immediately clear when John Joël Joseph, who was arrested in Jamaica in January, will be extradited from the island, defense attorney Donahue Martin said. He added that Joseph's wife and two sons have requested asylum in Jamaica and are still awaiting a response. Martin declined to comment on the extradition agreement, and no further details were immediately available. Haitian government officials did not respond to requests for comment. Two other suspects in the case — HaitianChilean businessman Rodolphe Jaar and Colombian soldier Mario Antonio Palacios — were recently extradited to the U.S. to face charges. Jaar was arrested in the Dominican Republic in January and Palacios was arrested

in Jamaica in October. Both are charged with conspiring to commit murder or kidnapping outside the United States and providing material support resulting in death, knowing, or intending that

such material support would be used to prepare for or carry out the conspiracy to kill or kidnap. More than 40 suspects have been arrested in the presidential slaying, including 18 former Colombian soldiers. Colombian government officials have said the majority of the ex-soldiers were duped and did not know about the real mission. It wasn't immediately clear what charges Joseph might face. He is a Haitian politician and opponent of the Tet Kale party to which Moïse belonged. A report from Haiti's National Police that hasn't been made public but was obtained by the AP quoted several sources saying Joseph had several links to the July 7 attack, with at least one person identifying him as one of the leaders. The sources said Joseph paid cash for rental cars used by the attackers and met with other suspects ahead of the killing, which occurred before dawn at Moïse's private residence. The report also stated that the

Haiti grounds private flights following fatal crash Haiti's National Civil Aviation Office has banned all private aircraft from flying in the wake of a probe following the recent crash of a small plane that killed at least five people and injured several others. It is not known when private flights will resume. The announcement was made last Thursday, a day after a Cessna 207 crashed into a truck transporting sodas in the capital of Port-au-Prince. Officials said the plane was en route to the southern coastal city of Jacmel and crashed shortly after taking off from Port-au-Prince.

The crash occurred four months after Haiti's Civil Aviation Security Department issued a notice warning that several private operators were breaking rules by running commercial flights, among other things, without the required license. Last July, another small plane also en route to Jacmel crashed near the capital, killing six people, including two U.S. missionaries. In recent months, several people have opted to fly from the capital to Haiti's southern region to avoid driving through gang-controlled areas that have seen a spike in kidnappings and killings.

former senator introduced other suspects to Joseph Badio, the alleged leader of the plot who previously worked for Haiti's Ministry of Justice and the government's anti-corruption unit until he was fired. In addition, the report stated that James Solages, a Haitian American arrested in the case, had a WhatsApp conversation with Joseph regarding preparations for the mission. It also said Solages told authorities that Joseph, Badio, and Jaar were among those appointed leaders of the operation. The extradition deal comes as the majority of suspects in the case have languished for months in Haiti's main penitentiary in the capital of Port-au-Prince. The Colombian soldiers have accused Haitian authorities of torture, while the Colombian government has said the country's consul in Haiti was threatened after trying to provide humanitarian assistance.

CCM leader and Nevis Premier, Mark Brantley, has maintained that Prime Minister Harris does not have the support of the majority of the members in Cabinet, adding that based on legal advice, the governor general “does, in fact, have the authority to act and therefore we have invited him to do so”. Deputy Prime Minister Shawn Richards, who heads PAM, said they will follow the “rule of law and the constitution” adding “we will leave our fate in the hands of the people. When a motion of no confidence is filed, the Speaker of the National Assembly is required to schedule a sitting of parliament within 21 days for the motion to be debated. If the motion is passed, the Prime Minister may resign in three days or advise the governor general to dissolve the parliament. If parliament is dissolved, the prime minister has the power to call an election in 90 days.

Art Installations For a truly unique gallery viewing, look no further than Cayman's underwater worlds. A magical scene comes alive at Sunset Reef, off Grand Cayman, where you can find a nine-foot bronze mermaid sculpture called Amphitrite (named after the wife of Poseidon, the great god and protector of the sea). The sculpture was created by Canadian sculptor and avid SCUBA enthusiast, Simon Morris, and installed in 2000. Amphitrite is actually the second of her kind. In 1989, the first statue, named the Emerald Princess, was placed in the waters of Powell River, British Columbia, Canada.

A Dream Getaway for Divers & Ocean Lovers

With some of the coolest coral in the Caribbean, wicked wrecks, and devilishly deep drop-offs, the Cayman Islands rank among the world's top destinations for diving and snorkeling. More than 350 dive sites offer the delight of getting up close and personal with beautiful marine life.

Shipwreck Spots There are two shipwrecks off the shores of Cayman Brac, including the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts; Grand Cayman also has several shipwrecks off its shores, including one deliberate one. On September 30, 1994. the USS Kittiwake was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register. In November 2008, her ownership was transferred for an undisclosed amount to the government of the Cayman Islands, which had decided to sink the Kittiwake in June 2009 to form a new artificial reef off Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman. Following several delays, the ship was finally scuttled according to plan in 2011. The Kittiwake has become a dynamic environment for marine life. While visitors are not allowed to take anything, there are endless sights. Each of the five decks of the ship offers squirrelfish, rare sponges, Goliath groupers, urchins, and more. Experienced and beginner divers are invited to swim around the Kittiwake.

Vibrant Reefs There are plenty healthy reefs in Cayman which will entice divers. Those to the west of Grand Cayman are especially rich, as are the abundant reefs of Little Cayman's Jackson's Bight, where you can marvel at an ever-changing kaleidoscope of marine life.

Reparation Fight from A4

some balance by having open discussions, we believe in constructive engagement, so if you notice there weren't any placards because for us it is about having an open and very objective discussion with you. “We understand that the nature of your job is not to get involved in any contentious issue, but at the same time it is important for you to understand the issues so that you can even use your, lets say, diplomatic influence to build bridges in achieving the reparatory justice that we are seeking here in the Caribbean,” Browne said. He told the royal couple that the reality is 'we have been left bereft of important institutions…universities and good medical facilities” acknowledging that in recent times Antigua and Barbuda has made “significant progress” with the establishment of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Island campus. He said while Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean have been able to build capacity to deal with the health sector, “again we have to acknowledge the fact we have been left behind as a result of situations associated with colonialism and slavery and there is some need for reparation to help us build capacity so we can advance at a faster rate”. Browne said while he is aware the matter is a “contentious issue, we are not trying to embarrass you, we are just trying to build awareness and you need not necessarily comment on this issue because we know you represent an institution that does not get involved in contentious issues. “But we think that as a family…we can raise this issue objectively in our engagement and at the same time probably get you to believe in what we are saying even though you cannot necessarily serve as an advocate. “We see you fundamentally as individuals who can help us in building those bridges in addressing these issues of reparatory justice,” Browne said. The royal couple, who arrived from St. Vincent and the Grenadines where they faced with protests by citizens demanding reparation for the slave trade, attended an event at Government House titled “Showcasing our nation, saluting our people” hosted by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Williams. They also attended an event at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium dubbed “'inspiration at the crease' before travelling to English Harbour for the “helm, saluting the triumphant' with the National Sailing Academy”. The one-day visit ended with a visit to the historical Clarence House.

Disney Bill Passes

“Let's call this what it is, it's the punitive, petulant political payback to a corporation who dared to say the emperor has no clothes, but if they behave like this next election cycle, maybe we'll put it back together,” said Senator Gary M. Farmer, a Democrat. Disney did not return an email seeking comment. The company is one of Florida's biggest private employers and last year said it had more than 60,000 workers in the state. It is not immediately clear exactly how Disney or neighboring governments will be affected if the district was dissolved. The push to punish Disney came after it announced it would suspend political donations in the state and said it was committed to supporting organizations working to oppose the state's new law limiting sexual orientation or gender identify instruction in the classroom. DeSantis and other Republicans have lashed out at Disney and other critics of the law, arguing that the policy is reasonable and that parents, not teachers, should be addressing such topics with children. The creation of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, and the control it gave Disney over 27,000 acres in Florida, was a crucial element in the company's plans to build near Orlando in the 1960s. Company officials said they needed autonomy to plan a futuristic city along with the theme park. The city never materialized, however; instead, it morphed into the Epcot theme park. The Florida House of Representatives also gave the final passage for the bill on Friday..

July to put this together, so we're actually giving ourselves more time to be thoughtful,” Republican Senate President Wilton Simpson told reporters after the vote. “I don't know how the end will come, but I know that this is a very worthy process that we're taking, and I think whatever comes out of it will be better than what we have today.”

“If Disney wants to pick a fight, they chose the wrong guy. As governor, I was elected to put the people of Florida first, and I will not allow a woke corporation based in California to run our state.” – DeSantis Still, the move represents the latest blow in a culture war harnessed by DeSantis as he runs for reelection and bolsters himself as a potential 2024 GOP presidential candidate through staunch opposition to liberal policies on race, gender, and abortion. Democrats, the minority party in the Legislature, have railed against the proposal as clear retaliation against a company that has been a major economic driver in the state.

Dominica's Jazz N' Creole Festival is Back in May One of the Eastern Caribbean's top music festivals is making a comeback! Dominica will see the return of the popular Jazz n' Creole Festival on Sunday, May 1, 2022, after a twoyear hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the 11th edition of the festival, which will feature a number of notable names from the region, from St Lucia's Teddyson John and the JSJ Trio from Guadeloupe. Acting Festivals and Events Manager, Samanatha Letang made the announcement recently. “Born in Castries, St Lucia to a deeply spiritual home, Teddyson John started his musical journey at a young age, nurtured in the church. In 2007 he made a move to Gospel and R&B to Soca, taking his career to another dimension. The move earned him the Groovy Soca Monarch title in 2015 putting him on an international map that made him become a household name, locally, regionally, and internationally,” she stated. According to Destination Marketing Manager, Kimberly King the return of the festival is a responsible decision following the successful implementation of pilot events held during the carnival season. “This year, we successfully piloted special events during what is traditionally called the carnival period and have now made the responsible decision to open up for more events. We anticipate that hosting events will attract more visitors to the island whether friends and family or leisure visitors.” Joining the regional acts will be several local artistes who are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The first of those is a group of four local talented females, Femme 4. Femme 4 includes Marsha Laurent, Shalina Samuel, Marsha Augustine, and Tasha Peltier. Dominica's Jazz 'n Creole is a fusion of jazz music with creole music, food, and culture, all in the family atmosphere of Fort Shirley in the Cabrits National Park. Jazz n' Creole patrons will be required to provide either a vaccination card or a negative antigen test taken within 24 hours of the event. With relaxation of the measures, visitors who wish to experience this unique festival can breathe a sigh of relief. Pre-arrival testing and testing upon arrival for fully vaccinated travelers at all ports of entry have been removed and pre-arrival health form is no longer required. The organizers of Jazz n' Creole, the Discover Dominica Authority through the Dominica Festivals Committee will host weekly press conferences leading up to the main event to discuss key event information, sponsors, fringe events, health protocols, exciting prizes, and more.

West Indies Kieron Pollard Retires from International Cricket West Indies white-ball captain Kieron Pollard has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 34-year-old all-rounder, who made his international debut in 2007, revealed his decision in a video on social media in which he said he was proud to have worn the maroon colors for more than a decade. “After careful deliberation, I've today decided to retire from international cricket,” he said in the video on Instagram. “As is the case of many young persons it was a dream of mine to represent the West Indies team from the time, I was a boy of 10 years and I'm proud to have represented West Indies cricket for over 15 years in both the T20 and ODI forms of the game.” He said leading the West Indies team, which he did with “passion, openness, courage, and everything I could ever possibly give both on and off the field without ever compromising my principles and integrity,” was the highest honor bestowed on him. The Trinidadian, who had captained the

West Indies ODI and T20 sides since 2019, expressed gratitude to the West Indies selectors, management teams and, in particular, head coach Phil Simmons “for seeing potential in me and for the faith they steadfastly had in me throughout my career”. “This and the confidence Cricket West Indies showed in me was particularly reassur-

ing as I stepped up to take on the challenge of leading the team,” he said. “I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the President of CWI Mr. Ricky Skerritt for his unwavering support and encouragement, especially during my time as captain.” Pollard added that while he will no longer be representing the regional team on the field,

he will offer support in other ways, where possible. “As I move on and make room for those who will carry the game forward in West Indies colors, know that I will always be supporting in whatever way I can. It is with profound gratitude for living my dream that I now raise my bat in salute to all that is West Indies cricket,” he said. He last played for West Indies in February in the ODI and T20I series against India which the Caribbean side lost. Pollard, who has never played a Test match for the West Indies, played a total of 123 ODIs in his international career, scoring 2,706 runs and picking up 55 wickets. In T20Is, he compiled 1,569 runs in 101 matches at a strike rate of 135.14. He is the third-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket, with 11,509 runs in 587 matches, most of which came from his participation in T20 franchises. Pollard is currently in India representing Mumbai Indians in the ongoing 2022 Indian Premier League. His retirement announcement came a day before Mumbai Indians play Chennai Super Kings.

Reggae Boyz to face Catalunya on June 16

St. Kitts and Nevis to Host Hero CPL Matches in 2022

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the Catalunya Football Federation have announced that the international friendly game between the Reggae Boyz and Catalunya that was postponed from 2020, will now be played at the Montilivi Stadium in Girona, Spain on May 25 at 6:45 p.m. The game will not attract ranking points as the Catalunya Football Federation is affiliated to the Royal Spanish Football Federation as one of several Spanish

regional football federations and as such cannot be affiliated with either FIFA of UEFA as a national member association. It is therefore not allowed to participate in official competitions for national teams such as the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championship. The Catalunya Football Federation was founded in 1900 and since 1904 has played nearly 200 games against various national, regional and club teams. Among the teams Catalunya Football Federation have engaged are

Nigeria, Brazil, and Argentina. It is expected that coach Paul Hall and his staff will use this game as a warmup and to further look at the players who will lead the team into the important Nations League tournament which starts in early June. Jamaica are in Group A and will play away to Suriname on June 4, play host to Suriname on June 7, host Mexico on June 14 before rounding out group play next year June 26 away to Mexico.

The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has confirmed that St Kitts & Nevis will host matches during the 2022 tournament which will run from August 30 to September 30. St Kitts & Nevis will host seven matches between August 30 and September 4 with the home team and current champions, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, playing in four of those games. Hero CPL will return to St Kitts & Nevis again in 2022 after the Federation successfully hosted the whole tournament in 2021. Pete Russell, Hero CPL's CEO, said: “The 2021 Hero CPL was an enormous success, and we are hugely grateful to the government and people of St Kitts & Nevis who were fabulous hosts. Warner Park is a fantastic venue, and we are very excited to be back there as the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots get their championship defense underway in front of a home crowd.” Jonel Powell, Minister of Sport for St Kitts & Nevis, said: “The hosting of the CPL in its entirety in 2021 in St Kitts & Nevis proved a success in every way for our people. Tremendous direct economic gains were made in our economy and to individuals at a difficult time due to the pandemic. Our people were able to receive some much needed 'covid relief' socially through the amazing matches, and our very own St Kitts & Nevis Patriots won its first CPL title in the most dramatic style. “This is why we are very pleased to partner with CPL once again as a host venue for their 2022 edition, and to have the opportunity to see our Patriots defend their title right here at historic Warner Park.” The 2022 season will take place in four countries, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and Guyana with the final set to talk place at Providence on September 30. First started in 2013, the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is a franchise-based T20 format cricket tournament that combines two of the most compelling aspects of Caribbean life – dramatic cricket and a vibrant Carnival atmosphere.
