Monday’s outburst from Omar McLeod, the reigning Olympic Games 110m hurdles gold medallist, was utterly disappointing.
McLeod, in his wisdom or lack thereof, chose the platform of the Muller Anniversary Games pre-meet press conference in London, England, to vent his frustrations at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), the
body responsible for his sporting discipline of track and field. And in so doing, painted a very distasteful picture of all concerned. McLeod, also a World Champion in
In a move to seek “justice from injustices”, the Jamaican government is readying to demand reparations from Great Britain for the centuries-old slave trade in the former British colony. The island was seized by the British, from the Spanish, in 1655 and profited off the labour of African slaves who worked on plantations of sugar cane, bananas and other crops. An estimated 600,000 Africans were shipped to toil in Jamaica, according to the National Library of Jamaica. Although Britain prohibited trade in slaves in its empire in 1807, slavery wasn't abolished in the Caribbean until 1834. And Jamaica remained a British colony until its independence in 1962. Leading the push for reparations is Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, who said it is time that Jamaica get “justice from injustices.” “We are hoping for reparatory justice in all forms that one would expect if they are to really ensure that we get justice from injustices to

Reggae Boyz Head Coach Theodore Whitmore Is In It To Win Jamaica's National Senior Men's Football Team Head Coach Theodore Whitmore has set his sights on winning this year's edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament, following on near misses in recent editions. Whitmore, the former Reggae Boyz standout, has made it clear that the Reggae Boyz want to improve on its second-place finish at the 2015 and 2017 renewals. And more importantly, he wants to be the first Jamaican coach to land the region's premier trophy, having already triumphed at the Caribbean level. “I want a good showing and I want to be the first local coach to win this tournament. This is very important,” the head coach told a virtual press conference on Sunday. A day later, the Reggae Boyz started their Concacaf Gold Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Suriname. The 48-year-old Whitmore has been at the helm in some capacity for eight years, but his command of the game was noted decades ago, at the Montego Bay Secondary School (now St. James High), where he was an agile football player. As a teenager, he excelled in the InterSecondary Football Junior League and played for two community teams, Whippets United and the Sugar United community team. After graduating high school, he started his club career at Montego Bay Boys Club, and later played for Violet Kickers and Seba United. Whitmore made his debut for the Reggae Boyz in a November 1993 friendly match against the United States. Whitmore earned 105 official international caps and scored 24

goals for the Jamaica national team. He was a key member of the Reggae Boyz' squad who advanced to their first and only World Cup in 1998. Although Jamaica was eliminated in the first round, Whitmore scored two goals in Jamaica's only win of the competition, a 2–1 victory against Japan. In that same year, he was named Caribbean Footballer of the Year. Clubs overseas took note of the skilled Jamaican and in 1999, 27-year-old Whitmore
was signed by English league side Hull City. On his league debut, Whitmore scored a league debut goal. During his 77 games for Hull, he became a fan favourite for the club. In 2001, while in Jamaica, Whitmore was injured in a car accident that led to the death of Reggae Boyz' teammate Stephen Malcolm. After the accident, he was charged with manslaughter, of which he was later acquitted. While at Hull City, he caught the attention of Scottish team Livingston who signed him in 2003. A year later, he signed to Tranmere Rovers where he played for two years. In 2006, he returned to Jamaica to become player/coach for his former team, Seba United. He coached Seba for two years, and in the midst of his tenure, he was brought on as interim coach of the Reggae Boyz after the firing of Bora Milutinović in 2007. In 2008, he was retained as an assistant under Renê Simões, his former coach who had helmed the team from 1994 to 2000. However, this time around, Simões lasted nine months as
head coach due to poor play in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. Upon his release in September 2008, Whitmore was again appointed interim coach until John Barnes was available in November. As interim coach in October 2008, Whitmore guided the Reggae Boyz to back-toback 1–0 wins against Mexico and Honduras. He again took the reins of the national team when John Barnes left the position in 2009. In December 2010, Whitmore led Jamaica to the 2010 Caribbean Cup title, the only championship won under his leadership. In April 2013, Whitmore resigned as head coach of the team. Tragedy struck a few months later when one of his sons, 14-year-old Jouvhaine was killed after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in November. The vehicle belonged to People's National Party Councillor Sylvan Reid, who was later freed from the charges. From December 2014 through February 2015, Whitmore served as Jamaica national u20 coach. In September 2016, Whitmore went back to his former post, as interim head coach of the Reggae Boyz. He officially signed on to the team in 2018 and will serve as head coach until the end of his contract in 2022. After taking over the team once again, Whitmore guided Jamaica to back-to-back Concacaf Gold Cup semi-final appearances in 2017 and 2019, reaching the final in 2017. That same year, he was honored with the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government for his contributions to sports. Whitmore has several children, including a second son Gianni who is noted for being just as skillful as his father on the football field.

Bahamas Prepares for Possible Mass Exodus of Haitians The head of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) has announced plans to send additional vessels to the southeast of the country in anticipation of a possible mass exodus of migrants fleeing Haiti in the aftermath of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise last week. “What we are basically doing is enhancing our strategic posture and positioning in the southeastern Bahamas and, in particular, along the windward passage and the waters between Great Inagua and the coast of Haiti,” said RBDF Commodore Dr. Raymond King. “What we are in the process of doing, and

Grenada Allowing Only Fully Vaccinated Visitors to Enter the Country The Grenada government says it will only allow fully vaccinated visitors to enter the country both at the air and seaports, as the island moves to introduces more measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus. “We have intensified our discussions with the Ministry of Health (and) being involved in tourism and having seen the suffering of the tour operators, of the vendors, of everybody else, my first impulse is to take what you get, but this is not ordinary times,” Tourism Minister Dr Clarice Modeste said. But she acknowledged “this is COVID times and therefore, with us being led by the Ministry of Health, they are insisting that 100 percent of our guests must be fully vaccinated.” She told reporters at the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) news conference that the health authorities “want to make sure that all of the T's are cross and the I's are dotted, and that Grenada's protocol and requirements are continues on B4 – Grenada and Vaccinations
we have already started mobilizing additional vessels, in total we would have a dedication of four surface assets in that area, as well as our aircraft, [which] will be assigned to that area to provide intelligent surveillance and reconnaissance support to our surface vessels,” he said. “And we really beefed up on our human intelligence aspect so we can get proactive or a preemptive idea of what's going on in Haiti and if any mass exodus is about to occur. News of Moïse's murder shocked the region last Wednesday. Moïse, 53, who has been a controversial
figure since being sworn in as Haiti's president in 2017, was killed at his home, his wife, Martine Moïse, was also shot and injured during the attack and was flown out of the country to Miami for further medical treatment. Haiti's borders and its international airport were closed and martial law was declared in the aftermath of the event. The Bahamas' borders have been closed to travelers from Haiti since earlier this year, with the government citing concerns over COVID-19 and the low level of vaccination in Haiti.
Barbados Records Spike in COVID Cases; New Restrictions Announced Barbados Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kenneth George on Sunday called on all local establishments to re-evaluate all protocols related to COVID-19 in the wake of a hike in cases across the country. George, who was speaking during a press conference on Sunday, following reports that 40 people, 20 males and 20 females, were diagnosed with COVID-19, also announced new restrictions. He said that a curfew from 11 pm to 5 am (local time) has been reinstated. In addition, there were be no social gatherings and churches be allowed to have only 100 persons. During a press conference, the Chief Medical Officer revealed that a church and local business registered 33 and 21 new COVID-19 cases respectively, over the last few days. He added that the Health Ministry was aware of businesses that were not adhering to protocols with employers and employees ditching most protocols
while they are out of the eye of the public. “What we are noticing, is that when you go into businesses across Barbados, you get some businesses doing a temperature check, you get hand sanitizer. The worrisome part of these businesses is the operations that you do not see. We have good reason to believe those operations include how people mix and mingle within the business. “There is a feeling of comfort with your peers, and the worrisome part of this is where persons mix for example when they have their lunch break or other breaks, they are close to each other, they are not social distancing, and they are not wearing their masks. So, it looks like a facade, that what is happening in the front is not necessarily what is being translated in the back of the business,” he said.

OPINION
CARICOM: The Only Organisation Commanding Wide Trust in Haiti's Crisis Haiti was in a constitutional and political crisis before the assassination of its President Jovenel Moïse in the early hours of the morning of July 7. That crisis has worsened. It is now explosive unless representatives of the main political parties collectively agree on an interim, broad-based government to prepare the country for presidential, legislative, and municipal elections due to be held in September. Fuel was poured on the fire of the crisis by Claude Joseph who has declared himself as prime minister. There is no legal or other basis for Joseph's action. He was appointed 'interim Prime Minister' by Moïse for 30 days in May. The appointment was renewed for another 30 days, until July 5 when Moïse published a decree, appointing Ariel Henry as the new prime minister with power to form a government, including representatives of opposition parties and civil society. Joseph acknowledged the appointment of Henry by publicly congratulating him and departing the official office and residence. Now, there is a sudden about turn. Meantime, in an interview with Le Nouvelliste, a daily newspaper printed in Haiti, Mr Henry insisted that he, and not Mr Joseph, is the prime minister. At best, in this turbulent situation, it is Ariel Henry who should
be responsible for governmental affairs while he works swiftly on establishing a broad-based interim and national government. The international community should not delude itself that anything but an interim government, comprised of political parties and civil society, will be acceptable to the Haitian people. If a few powerful governments attempt to support a power grab and not a broad-based interim government, they will condemn Haiti to worse unrest than has been the case in recent years. It should be recalled that Moïse had been running Haiti by decree since January 2020. There is no national assembly, and the normal institutions of government are not functioning as required by the Constitution. CARICOM Heads of Government were right when, at the conclusion of their regular meeting from 4 to 6 July, they expressed their “grave concern over the untenable situation in Haiti
which is in the throes of a protracted, political, constitutional and humanitarian crisis.” What happens in Haiti in the coming weeks will determine if the country is to be plunged into further chaos, or stability will be established. For peace to prevail, the Haitian people must have confidence in the governance of the country over the next few months, including the impartiality and independence of the elections' machinery which, at the moment, is populated by persons handpicked by Moïse and his party. If there is no change in this situation, it is most unlikely to be accepted by opposition parties and by civil society. The stakeholders in Haiti have to come together to agree on an interim government and re-establish, as best they can, some of the key institutions of government, especially the judiciary and electoral council. The country would accept an interim, national government delaying the election date until independent and transparent
machinery is established. It is hardly likely that they will accept elections – two months from now in the hands of persons they did not elect and who were not approved in accordance with the country's constitution. The problem is that no country or organization can proffer itself to help Haiti through this crisis. The Haitian government has to issue an invitation. In the absence of an interim government, no invitation will be issued to an organization that commands wide trust from the Haitian stakeholders. There are few organizations that command such trust amongst Haitians – CARICOM is probably the one that enjoys the widest confidence. On July 6 – even before Moïse's assassination – CARICOM leaders expressed their “support for dialogue between the contending parties” and repeated “the Community's willingness to extend its good offices in attaining a Haitian-led peaceful resolution to the current impasse”. This would entail both facilitation and mediation. The UN and other international organizations should provide CARICOM with the resources it would need to undertake this vital role. Haiti is a CARICOM country. What happens in it has consequences for the region. – By Sir Ronald Sanders

Florida Resident Detained as Latest Suspect in Haiti Assassination The latest suspect detained amid the search for the masterminds and assassins in the killing of Haiti President Jovenel Moïse is a Haitian in his 60s living in Florida who identifies himself as a doctor and has accused the leaders of his homeland of corruption. Police identified the man on Sunday night as Christian Emmanuel Sanon and said Moïse's alleged killers were protecting the suspect as the supposed president of Haiti. The head of Haiti's police, Léon Charles, accused Sanon of working with those who plotted and participated in Moïse's killing, which stunned the nation of more than 11 million people. He gave no information on the purported masterminds. Charles said that among the items found by officers at Sanon's house in Haiti were a hat emblazoned with the logo of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, 20 boxes of bullets, gun parts, four automobile license plates from the Dominican Republic, two cars and correspondence with unidentified people. “We continue to make strides,” Charles said of police efforts to solve the brazen attack early Wednesday at Moïse's private home that killed the president and seriously wounded his wife, Martine Moïse, who is hospitalized

in Miami. Charles said Sanon was in contact with a firm that provides security for politicians and recruited the suspects in the killing. He said Sanon flew into Haiti on a private jet accompanied by several of the alleged gunmen. The gunmen's initial mission was to protect Sanon, but they later received a new order: arrest the president, Charles said. “The operation started from there,” he said, adding that an additional 22 suspects joined the group and that contact was made with Haitian citizens. A total of 26 Colombians are suspected in the killing of the president. Eighteen of them have been arrested, along with three Haitians. Charles said
Two Prime Ministers Claim Power Following Assassination of President Moise Pressure is mounting on the man who claims to be Haiti's leader in the aftermath of the president's assassination, with at least two other officials claiming to be the legitimate head of government amid a race to fill the political power vacuum. Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who is ruling Haiti with the backing of lean police and military forces, has pledged to work with the opposition and allies of President Jovenel Moïse, who was killed Wednesday at his private residence. He faces two rivals: Ariel Henry, whom Moïse designated as prime minister a day before he was killed, and Joseph Lambert, the head of Haiti's dismantled Senate, who was

five of the suspects are still at large and at least three have been killed. Sanon has lived in Florida, in Broward County and in Hillsborough County on the Gulf Coast. Records show he has also lived in Kansas City, Missouri. He filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and identifies himself as a doctor in a video on YouTube titled “Leadership for Haiti.” In the video, he denounces the leaders of Haiti as corrupt, accusing them of stripping the country of its resources, saying that “they don't care about the country, they don't care about the people.” He claims Haiti has uranium, oil and other resources that have been taken by government officials.

recently chosen by a group of well-known politicians to be provisional president. Lambert was supposed to be sworn in Sunday as a symbolic act, but the event was canceled at the last minute because he said not all his supporters could be present. Joseph, Henry and Lambert met Sunday with a U.S. delegation that included representatives from the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security who flew to Haiti to encourage dialogue “to reach a political accord that can enable the country to hold free and fair elections,” the White House's National Security Council said. The deepening political instability comes as Haitian authorities continue to probe the assassination with help from Colombia's government. Twenty-six former Colombian soldiers are suspected in the killing, and 23 have been arrested, along with three Haitians. Léon Charles, head of Haiti's National Police, said five suspects are still at large and at least three have been killed.

Sculptures by Basil Watson on Display at Miramar Cultural Center The sculptures of several Jamaican Olympians and historical figures are now on show at the Ansin Family Art Gallery in the Miramar Cultural Center Arts, thanks to Jamaica's internationally famous sculpture Basil Watson. Watson has made the cultural centre the place to see some of Jamaica's renowned public figures from June 1 to August 15, 2021. The exhibition, entitled Maquettes: the studies and drawings of Basil Watson, is free to the public and acknowledges the nationally recognized month-long observance of Caribbean American Heritage in the City of Miramar. The exhibition also extends over Jamaica's Independence Day- a key day for a large city demographic. “Basil Watson's exhibit at MCC is very timely. As we celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month, the community has an opportunity to see his miniature-sized statues or maquettes which offer a very realistic depiction of some of the life-sized statues of Jamaica's greatest athletes including Shelley-
Sculptor Basil Watson (left) with Jamaica’s Minister of Sport and Culture, Olivia Grange and athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (right) at the unveiling of the maquette of her statue at a ceremony held at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in St Andrew on June 23, 2018. – File photo
Ann Fraser-Pryce and Usain Bolt as well as iconic figures like Louise Bennett-Coverley,” stated City Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis. “In this Olympic year it is so fitting to have this exhibit of prolific athletes in our Gallery,” she added. Commissioner Davis will complement the exhibition with the hosting of An Evening with Basil Watson where a moderated discussion with Basil Watson and the Exhibit Curator, Christopher Norwood will be the highlight. The reception will take place at the Miramar Cultural Center's Banquet Hall on Thursday, August 5, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend; however, space is limited. “The reception on August 5th will be just in time to celebrate Jamaica's Independence as well as Trinidad and Tobago's Independence that same month. I invite the public to join me as we enjoy an evening at the Botanical Garden followed by a discussion with the Artist himself in MCC's Banquet Hall,” stated Commissioner Davis.
Florida Rep. Val Demings Meets with Haitian Community Leaders On Monday, Florida Rep. Val Demings met with over a dozen leaders in Florida's Haitian community to discuss strategies to support the people of Haiti, as well as Haitians and HaitianAmericans living in Florida. This is in the aftermath of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, who was shot and killed last Wednesday. Among the group that met with Demings
were business leaders, community health representatives, labor leaders, farmworkers, TPS advocates, education leaders, and multiple pastors and faith leaders. Rep. Demings is Co-Chair of the Congressional Haiti Caucus, and has led efforts to support Haitian TPS, send COVID-19 vaccines to Haiti, and call for Demings stability, security and democracy. Said Rep. Demings: “We had a productive open conversation with Haitian civil leaders in Florida. We discussed the urgent
need to protect the health, safety and prosperity of all people in Haiti and in Florida. As we work to keep the Haitian people safe in the chaos and uncertainty currently gripping the nation, it is critical that we lift and listen to the Haitian voices that must shape a democratic future that will serve all people, not the elite few. “In the weeks ahead, I will continue to work with Florida's Haitian community and all willing partners to help the Haitian people build the kind of
government that they want to see, one that will keep them safe and ensure pathways to widespread prosperity. I will continue to fight for COVID-19 vaccines to reach Haiti and be fairly distributed. I will continue to fight for a fair immigration system that gives people who play by the rules a chance to have a secure future in the United States. I will continue to support Haitian-led movements to create a true and stable democracy in Haiti. I look forward to continued conversations and the continuance of this important work.”

USCIS Applications Rejected Due To Fee Expiration May Now Be Reled By Attorney Caroly Pedersen The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced much of the USCIS agency staff to work remotely and those who remained at facilities had to undergo extensive social distancing and safety measures, which significantly slowed the processing of applications. This led to massive processing backlogs and delays, including those at USCIS acceptance centers, called lockboxes. Immigration cases filed between mid-2020 and the end of the year at USCIS lockboxes experienced delays of up to four months or more in receiving receipts and in many cases, rejections, due to expired checks and payments. As a result, thousands upon thousands of applications filed during 2020 were rejected and sent back to applicants along with a notice that a $30 insufficient funds payment was due for the expired payment checks or money orders. New Biden agency officials recognize the
problem and are in the process of taking measures to speed up processing and rectify the application rejection issues. On June 10th, 2021, the USCIS announced that for the next 60 days from June 10 until Aug. 9, 2021, applicants and petitioners who filed cases between October 1, 2020, and April 1, 2021, that were rejected during that timeframe solely due to a filing fee payment that expired while the benefit
request was awaiting processing, may resubmit the request with a new fee payment. As long as the USCIS agrees that the application was rejected due to USCIS delays, the new application will be deemed to have been received on the initial filing date it was first received and waive the $30 dishonored check fee. Resubmissions should include the USCIS rejection documentation which was included in the returned package.
Automatic Work Permit Extensions Provide Relief Amid Long Delays In Renewal Processing! Many immigrants are not aware that their work permits can automatically be extended. A little known policy, called the Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension rule allows pending residency and other immigrants with expiring work permits to keep working for six months. Under the rule, residency applicants and
others in certain immigration categories with expiring employment authorization documents who have filed for extensions (form I-765), are automatically authorized to continue working for an additional six month period while waiting for the renewal to be issued. This comes in very handy now that the normal processing time for work permit
renewals takes 7-10 months. Currently the National Benefits Center is working on I-765 Work Permit applications based upon residency, that were filed in September 2020. The Biden administration is working to reduce processing times and is approving work permit for two years instead of one. This is expected to eventually significantly reduce work permit processing times in the future.
Requirements Eased for U.S. Citizens Returning To The U.S. With Expired Passports The U.S. State Department and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have announced that certain U.S. citizens may return to the country using expired passports through December 31, 2021. To qualify, a U.S. citizen must be using a passport that expired on or after January 1, 2020 and meet the following: 1) Have a passport that had an initial validity of 10 years, or five years for U.S. citizens who were 15 years old or younger when the passport was issued. 2) The expired passport must be in the U.S. Citizen's possession, undamaged and unaltered at the time of travel. This policy only allows U.S. Citizens to enter the U.S. and does not confer the right to use the expired passport to travel internationally.
New Policy: Work Permits for Residency Applicants Will Now Be Issued For Two Years Instead Of One! On June 9, 2021, the USCIS announced that it will begin issuing new Work Permits, officially called: Employment Authorization Document (“EAD”) cards filed as part of Residency cases (form I-485 Adjustment of Status Application), or filed requesting an extension based on a pending Residency case, for a two-year validity period instead of a one-year validity period. This increases the current one-year validity period on initial and renewal EADs to two years. The administration hopes this new policy change will decrease the number of employment authorization renewal requests and improve processing times for work permit issuance, which are currently six to nearly eight months or more.

repair the damages that our ancestors experienced,” Grange told Reuters in a recent interview. “Our African ancestors were forcibly removed from their home and suffered unparalleled atrocities in Africa to carry out forced labor to the benefit of the British Empire. Redress is well overdue,” she added. The petition, with approval from Jamaica's National Council on Reparations, will be filed pending advice from the attorney general and three legal teams, Grange said. The attorney general will then send it to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who remains head of state of the Commonwealth country. Grange declined to say how much the government is seeking, but the petition is based on a 2015 motion filed by long-serving member of the Jamaica Labour Party, Mike Henry, who said it was worth some 7.6 billion pounds. “I am asking for the same amount of money to be paid to the slaves that was paid to the slave owners,” said Henry. “I am doing this because I have fought against this all my life, against chattel slavery which has dehumanized human life.” It is not the first time that the Jamaican government is demanding reparations from the United Kingdom. The same year that Henry had filed the motion for reparations, was the same year that then-British Prime Minister David Cameron, declined Jamaica's request for reparations, saying that the country should move on from its painful past. “Slavery was and is abhorrent in all its forms. It has no place whatsoever in any civilised society, and Britain is proud to have eventually led the way in its abolition.” “That the Caribbean has emerged from the long shadow it cast is testament to the resilience and spirit of its people. I acknowledge that these wounds run very deep indeed. But I do hope that, as friends who have gone through so much together since those darkest of times, we can move on from this painful legacy and continue to build for the future,” he stated while speaking in the Jamaican parliament. Cameron had offered some $37.9 million to help Jamaica build a new prison instead.

the event, told the world that he was “robbed” of the opportunity to defend his title in Tokyo, Japan, and that he was not given a fair chance to compete at the 29th Olympics. For those who might have missed it, Mr. McLeod, the number two ranked athlete in that discipline, hit the first hurdle during the final at the Jamaica National Championships a few weeks ago and finished last in a field of eight. Thus, he failed to earn one of the three qualifying places on Jamaica's team to the Olympics. The race was won by Ronald Levy, ahead of Damion Thomas, with veteran Hansle Parchment finishing in third place. Under the JAAA selection criteria, athletes must compete in the National Championships unless an exemption has been granted by the JAAA. Also, athletes placing in the first to third positions in all events will be selected if they have attained the qualifying standard for the event provided however, that in any event where any athlete has been granted an exemption from competing in that event at the National Championships under Criteria (7) the athlete so exempted may be considered for selection as an entrant for the event in the competition. Mr. McLeod, having competed and finished in eighth place, has no basis to claim that he was “robbed” of the opportunity to defend his title, or that he was not given a fair chance. It is very disappointing that McLeod suffered a mishap in the event and ultimately lost out on the chance to make the team. But those are the rules, and he knows it. There is no solid basis for inserting Mr. McLeod to the three-member team. What would be the justification for omitting either of Messrs. Levy, Thomas, or Parchment?
Have we not learnt? Remember 2008 when one ShellyAnn Fraser finished in the women's top three and the more established Veronica Campbell Brown missed out? Many had put forward a case, as feeble as it was, to have Campbell Brown replace Fraser. Thankfully, common sense prevailed, and no such thing happened. The rest is history as Fraser-Pryce is arguably the world's finest female sprinter.

What would have and could have happened to her career had the authorities pulled her from her rightful place then? Conversely, McLeod should have known better and conducted himself in a more dignified manner than he did last Monday. “I am very heartbroken, honestly,” he said. “I just don't think I was given or granted a fair opportunity to make the team with the most ridiculous schedule that I have never seen in my years of track and field.” Mcleod claimed he suffered cramps prior to the event. “In the morning I had the most human moment where I had severe cramps before the race and in that moment, I just did not know what to do and I thought my country would have had my back. We did a medical exemption hoping that...it has been done before (for)
Usain Bolt and so many other athletes before where they could not run in the finals or something happened and they filled out a medical exemption, but that was Usain Bolt you can't deny him from going to the championships and I thought I was in the same position knowing that I won my country all their major gold medals (and had) historic moments where I was the first Jamaican to win a gold medal in every championships and thought that I was going to be OK but my name was not on the list and so I am pretty heartbroken.” The JAAA has made it clear that Mr. McLeod applied for a medical exemption after the event was run, which rendered the application worthless, as it had to be done prior to competing. Mr. Garth Gayle, president of the JAAA, was swift with a response. “We are saddened that he has made the comments which he has made but it is his right to do, but we will continue to do our best to provide for all of our athletes. The conditions were the same for all competing athletes, nobody complained or voiced any concerns prior to the start of the competition and those who would have done well we applaud them, those who did not do well we would have wished the situation would have been good for them, but we have to go forward with those who have earned their places.” We have no doubt that Mr. McLeod is upset and disappointed and probably confused with how things unfolded at the National Championships, but such is the nature of sport, especially obstacle events. But that gives Mr. McLeod no right to go tarnish the reputation of the JAAA. That, we submit, is regrettable and would have gone a long way in undoing some of his great achievements. Some of the opinions stated in this article do not generally reflect the views of the National Weekly.
Grenada and Vaccinations being adhered to. “The main thing is everybody has to be fully vaccinated,” she said in response to a question about the resumption of cruise ships selecting Grenada as a stop-off destination. Already Seaborne, which is home-based in Barbados, is due to berth here later this month, becoming the first cruise ship to call in Grenada after the island entered into a lockdown status in March 2020. The policy of only fully vaccinated will be granted permission to enter the country will also extend to stay over passengers entering through the airport but there will be an exception for returning nationals. “We cannot put those conditions for Grenadians, the terms and conditions for Grenadians will have to be different,” Modeste said. The current policy is that all visitors who

are fully vaccinated will only be required to spend no more than 48 hours in quarantine. All incoming passengers who are fully vaccinated, that is having received two doses of an approved vaccine, are mandated to do an on-island PCR COVID test. Once the test is negative the individual will be allowed to mingle with the citizens, a positive result will result in the person remaining in quarantine. Persons with only one dose of the vaccination are required to spend up to seven days in quarantine and must test negative before they are allowed to mingle with citizens. The health authorities say they are aware of people using fake documents and are examining documents for authenticity. Several incoming passengers have been charged for presenting falsified documents to immigration and health authorities.

One of the Dawkins plays, Toy Boy, won Johnson the Actor Boy Award for Best Actor in 1996. Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to Johnson on social media, saying “This morning, I mourn with all Jamaicans as we heard the news of the passing of our very own legendary actor, Volier Johnson. Chris Brown Sued for Sampling Red Rat's 1997 Dancehall Hit Song, “Tight Up Skirt” By Ramona Samuels Twenty-three years after it was released, the chart-topping hit dancehall song 'Tight Up Skirt', performed by dancehall star Red Rat is the subject of a US $1.5 million dollar copyright infringement lawsuit involving R&B/pop star Chris Brown. In official court documents filed by Greensleeves Publishing Limited, which owns the largest catalog of reggae songs in the world, they claim that “both the vocal timbre and language dialect change when Brown's 2017 song 'Privacy' is performed”. They are further claiming that the iconic line “Hey you girl inna di tight up skirt” was used in Brown's song, “without permission.” Though the actual words in Chris's song
are “hey you girl without di tight-up skirt”, in the legal documents, Greensleeves has made claims that “Chris Brown took the core musical feature of 'Tight Up Skirt' and used it prominently in his song. The publishing company, which is privately organized under the laws of the United Kingdom, first released the song in 1997 in the U.K. and then throughout the world. 'Tight Up Skirt' contains copyrightable subject matter under the Copyright Laws of the United States. The song's copyright was registered with the United States Copyright Office on March 16, 2020. pop star sampling his song and was clueless that Greensleeves had intentions to sue him for the sampling. When Brown's album, Heartbreak on a Full Moon dropped, Red Rat claimed that he was, “getting many calls left and right from many people asking me about my thoughts regarding [Chris Brown] sampling 'Tight Up Skirt', and all I can say is, 'Give God all the glory.'” In 2017, Red Rat said the fact that Chris Brown, who is an international music star, felt he needed to sample the 1997 song “only shows how much he loves and respects Red Rat and [the] catalog. It also shows how much of a fan he is to the music.”

Matthews Hundred Propels WI Women to Series Win Opener Hayley Matthews sparkled with her second One-Day International hundred as West Indies Women secured a series win with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Pakistan Women in Antigua on Monday. Chasing an uncomplicated 183 in the third ODI of the five-match series, the hosts cantered to their target off the first ball of the 41st over, with the right-handed Matthews finishing unbeaten on exactly 100 off 122 deliveries. She struck 11 fours and dominated a 56run, opening stand with Kyshona Knight (18) before putting on a further 106 for the second wicket with Britney Cooper, who fell short of a well-deserved half-century with 45 off 68 balls. Sent in earlier at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, Pakistan were lifted by Omaima Sohail’s top score of 62 before they were dismissed for 182 with an over remaining in the innings. Opener Muneeba Ali (25) and Nida Dar (24) chimed in with supporting knocks but offspinner Anisa Mohammed (3-25) and medium-pacer Chinelle Henry (3-37) snatched three wickets apiece to stall the innings and set up West Indies’ third straight win. Not to be left out, Matthews also starred with the ball, grabbing two for 30 from ten measured overs of off-spin. “We all knew as batters once we applied ourselves at the crease, spent some time and batted some overs, that the wicket was good enough that once we batted normally, the runs were going to come,” said Matthews.
deliveries at the start of the 17th over from offspinner Rameen Shamim before raising triple figures off the 121st delivery she faced, by clipping seamer Diana Baig to mid-wicket for a couple in the 40th over. “I’m really excited. I’ve been working really hard over the last couple of months to improve on my batting and improve on my consistency and it’s really good to see it finally paying off,” the 23-year-old beamed. Kyshona Knight struck two fours in her 31ball stay before falling lbw to left-arm spinner Anam Amin in the 12th over but Cooper arrived to carve out three boundaries in a polished knock. She appeared set for her first ODI halfcentury in five years when she top-edged a swivel pull at fast bowler Fatima Sana, and fell to a well-judged running catch by Ayesha Naseem at backward square in the 36th over. Sohail had proven the mainstay of Pakistan’s innings when they batted, her knock consuming 79 balls and including seven fours. With her side struggling on 56 for three in Matthews the 16th over after Henry removed Muneeba “That was the mindset all of us had going and captain Javeria Khan (12), Sohail staged an out there. Me personally, I just wanted to spend 87-run, fourth-wicket partnership with Nida a lot of time at the crease and I was able to do Dar to prop up the innings. However, both fell in the space of 19 that, and the runs were able to come with it.” The hundred for Matthews was the second deliveries with ten runs added to leave Pakistan in her last eight ODIs, her maiden one coming on 153 for five in the 38th over, as the last seven down for(5)a during merethe 39second runs, half with against before herdribbles homepast fansSuriname in wickets JamaicaSouth forwardAfrica Leon Bailey (right) defenderwent Ridgeciano Haps stand-in captain Mohammed of a CONCACAF Gold Cup years Groupago. UK To Ban Online Racists From Games After Euro 2020 Uproar U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson says the government plans to ban anyone guilty of online racist abuse from soccer matches as authorities continue to respond to the lawlessness connected to England’s loss in the final of the European soccer championship. Johnson on Wednesday told lawmakers that it was time to act after three Black members of England’s national team were targeted by racist abuse on social media after they failed to score during the penalty shootout that sealed the team's loss to Italy on Sunday night. The government plans to add online racism to the list of offenses for which fans can be barred from matches, he said. Courts are allowed to issue banning orders if a fan is convicted of a “relevant offence”
linked to a match, including crimes such as disorderly behavior or possession of weapons. While many fans have rallied around Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka since the players were targeted on social media, activists said racism in English soccer is a longstanding problem that authorities haven't done enough to address. Sancho spoke out about the incident in an Instagram post on Wednesday, encouraging young players who have experienced similar abuse to stay strong and “keep chasing the dream." “I'm not going (to) pretend that I didn't see the racial abuse that me and my brothers Marcus and Bukayo received after the game, but sadly it's nothing new," he wrote. “As a society we need to do better, and hold these people accountable." Sunday's European Football Championship final was also marred by unruly behavior in central London and around Wembley Stadium, where ticketless fans
stormed past police and into the game. Some observers have sharply criticized London's Metropolitan Police Service for failing to adequately prepare for what clearly would be a massive event. The police department issued a statement Wednesday defending its actions, saying top brass had deployed “one of the most significant and comprehensive policing plans" ever rolled out for a soccer game. Even so, some ticketless fans tried to push their way into stadium, injuring 19 police officers who were trying to control volatile crowds. Police made 26 arrests at Wembley and another 25 in central London. “I do not accept that the policing operation failed, and I standby the difficult decisions made by police officers and the Met’s public order commanders,'' Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jane Connors said. “Without their immediate intervention, it is possible that this game could have been abandoned,''
Gayle Leads West Indies to Commanding T20 Series Win Over Australia Chris Gayle showed once again showed why he is a force in T20 cricket as he guided the West Indies to a commanding 3-0 lead over Australia in the fivematch Twenty20 (T20) International series on Monday evening. Gayle smashed 67 runs from 38 balls to set up the West Indies run chase which eventually got to 142 for four in 14 overs and five deliveries, chasing 141 made by the visitors. The left-hander became the first cricketer ever to surpass 14,000 T20 runs in the process. Captain Nicholas Pooran got the winning four to end at an unbeaten 32 from 27 balls, which sealed the series for the home side. He and Gayle shared in a 67 run third-
Gayle
wicket stand which was the icing on the cake despite rookie pacer Riley Meredith bagging three wickets for 48 runs. Also on the bowling side, leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr put in another good shift with the ball by bagging two wickets to stifle the Australian innings. Walsh sent back captain Aaron Finch for 30 and Alex Carey for 13, as the Aussies once again stuttered in the middle overs. Moises Henriques, with 33, and Ashton Turner, 24, tried to keep Australia in the game but Dwayne Bravo was involved in the fall of both wickets, as the visitors crawled to just 141 for the loss of six wickets. Man of the match, Chris Gayle said the inspiration from his teammates allowed him to perform and get to the milestone. “From a personal point of view, I was struggling with the bat and to be able to get some runs today is very pleasing,” he said. “I want to dedicate this half-century and milestone to my teammates, especially Kieron Pollard. We had a team meeting before the game and he stood tall, and that’s what a leader should do. He said he was behind me all the way and he wanted me to go out and express myself.”
