Spare The Rod, Spoil The Child? The Jamaica government has hinted at the possibility of introducing legislation aimed at making corporal punishment illegal as the authorities condemn the death of a four-year-old child, who had been beaten by his stepfather.

In the same way we have addressed and condemned other forms of violence in this House, we must unequivocally, loudly, and resolutely condemn violence against children. It should not be tolerated.

– PM Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Holness said that each year, approximately 25 to 30 percent of reports received were for children who suffered some form of physical violence. His statement was made as four-year-old Nashaun Brown was allegedly killed by his stepfather Shaun Bennett, who has since been charged with

Prime Minister Andrew Holness told Parliament that his administration is prepared to go against the traditional mode of punishing children. He said that physical abuse remains one of the main and overt forms of child maltreatment reported to the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) and the National Children’s Registry.

DISAPPOINTED With Development of Jamaican Male Sprinters By Sheri-kae McLeod

Usain Bolt is disappointed with how Jamaican men's sprinting has developed since he retired. The fastest man alive also predicts his compatriots will find it tough at the Tokyo Olympics after his glorious domination over the last decade. With Bolt leading the way, Jamaica won all nine men's track sprint finals in Beijing, London and Rio — although they later lost their 2008 relay gold medals after Nesta Carter failed a drug test. The triple 100m and 200m Olympic champion Bolt says it is heartbreaking to see the country fall behind in the sprinting world. continues on B4 – Disappointed

very time Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce steps on the track, some sort of record is in jeopardy. At the top of that list, of course, is Florence Griffith Joyner's 33-year-old mark in the 100 meters. At the upcoming Olympics, Fraser-Pryce, the 34-year-old mother from Jamaica, also could become the oldest person to win an individual Olympic sprint. And, she could become the first woman to win three 100-meter gold medals at the Games. Not bad for an athlete who feared her career was over four years ago when she became pregnant, but who rebounded to win the world championship in 2019.

“Commitment is everything — today's failure prepares you for tomorrow's success,” Fraser-Pryce tweeted recently. “There's no failure in progress, so keep going and push through.” Where the world used to look to another Jamaican, Usain Bolt, to rewrite history at the Olympics, Bolt's retirement turns the spotlight over to Fraser-Pryce, who is now the mostaccomplished active 100-meter sprinter in the world. The chances for the “Pocket Rocket,” who now calls herself the “Mommy Rocket,” to put her name in the history book starts July 30 in Tokyo. Those chances increased dramatically earlier this month when the runner considered

her main threat, American Sha'Carri Richardson, was banned for a positive test for marijuana. Even without Richardson in the race, the sprints still have star power. Dina Asher-Smith, the British speedster who won 200-meter gold and 100-meter silver at the 2019 world championships, will be in the lineup, along with Shericka Jackson of Jamaica, who is now on the short list of women to run sub-11 seconds in the 100, sub-22 in the 200 and sub-50 in the 400. And then, there's defending Olympic champion Elaine Thompson Herah, the 29year-old from Jamaica who, in Rio, recorded the first women's 100-200 sweep since FloJo in 1988. She qualified for both races this time, too. Fraser-Pryce will also be a factor in the 200, which she also won at Jamaica's recent Olympic qualifier; she has a 2012 Olympic silver medal at that distance, as well. That race is also expected to include Asher-Smith; Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas, who, because of the Olympic schedule, has to choose between the 200 and 400, and has indicated she wants the 200; and American Gabby Thomas, who ran 21.61 at Olympic trials to become the second-fastest woman in history at the distance, behind only Griffith Joyner. “Now I'm just going to have to map out a different trajectory for my life,” Thomas said. On June 5, it was Fraser-Pryce who became the second-fastest woman in history in the 100 — her time of 10.63 declared to the world that she was, indeed, ready for the push to Tokyo. “Honestly no… I never expected I would run 10.6 and think it's a good thing because there was no pressure,” Fraser-Pryce said when she posted the time.

Barbados to Implement New Travel Bubble Barbados has established a travel bubble for persons coming from select countries as it seeks to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The authorities said that the bubble, which went into effect last weekend, will allow fully vaccinated travelers from Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Anguilla, Montserrat, Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, St. Maarten, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands and Bermuda to enter the island. But they will have to present a valid pre-flight negative PCR test, to be exempt from further quarantine or testing upon arrival in Barbados. Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Kenneth George, said that the countries in the travel bubble had low COVID-19 positivity rates and low cases per 100,000 population, “every fortnight. “We have a system in place to monitor the bubble countries and if their fortunes change quickly, they will be so removed [from the bubble],” he said. The CMO also noted that Barbados had also expanded its list of countries of concern and that persons, whether fully vaccinated or unvaccinated, who have traveled through or from these countries within the last 21 days, must arrive in Barbados with a valid COVID-19 standard PCR test taken within three days prior to travel. These countries include Haiti, Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Suriname and Kenya. In addition, they must have a COVID-19 standard PCR test conducted on arrival at the airport; complete seven days in-room quarantine with no exceptions; be tested on the eighth day and on receipt of a negative test result, can leave quarantine. The authorities said that all passengers traveling through or from these countries are required to quarantine, at their own expense, at one of the island's designated quarantine properties as listed in the Travel Protocols. Meanwhile, Barbados recorded 11 new COVID-19 cases including five females from 739 tests carried out on Sunday. There are currently 151 people in isolation. Since March last year, confirmed COVID-19 cases have moved to 4,269 (2,071 females and 2,198 males). The viral illness has claimed 48 lives. The public health laboratory has conducted 202,157 tests. The number of first doses administered under the National Vaccination Programme is 98,206. Additionally, 73,427 people have received second doses of the COVID-19 vaccines. This number represents 27.1 percent of the population.

Trinidad Reopens Border Reiterates Strong Measures Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday reopened its borders after a 16-month closure due to the coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, speaking at the weekly news conference, said that he had received reports that on the very first flight to have arrived, some passengers were seeking to beat the system. “This is a huge step we are taking, but we are taking it knowing that we are still under threat but we are also operating with significant cautions, and you were told before what are the conditions for entry. “Unfortunately I can tell you that in the first shipment of people into the country, the very first one, we had an instance of people not wanting to cooperate with restriction. I want to make it clear again that we are not giving any passes to people who believe that they are smarter than the rest of us,” Prime Minister Rowley said. The authorities, prior to the reopening of the airport, had outlined a series of measures, including the need for a PCR test prior to arrival. They also warned that unvaccinated non-nationals would not be allowed into the country. In addition, the Parliament approved fines in excess of TT$300,000 for persons who contravene the measures on arrival. Rowley said, notwithstanding the situation on

Do you think COVID-19 Is Still A Major Health Threat in the United States?

Despite the emergence of new COVID-19 variants, Americans, generally, have returned to their normal way of life. With states like Florida lifting all COVID-19 restrictions and the CDC issuing a maskless guidance for vaccinated Americans, many people seem to think that the pandemic is over, at least in America. Local leaders in South Florida like Broward County Mayor Steve Geller have been urging residents to still take precautions, but state governor Ron DeSantis is pushing for the state to return to normal. With these contradicting messages, we asked South Florida residents if they believe that COVID-19 is still a major threat to the United States. Here are the responses:

Geneveve Barnes: I believe it still is. There are a lot of people who still wanna wear masks and then there are those who are able to go without masks because they've been vaccinated. But you don't really have any proof of who is who. And those people who continue to be reckless in their behaviors can cause the spread. The delta virus is still out there and so we still have be cautious. That means everybody. For those of us going back into the school, that includes us too.

Maurice Spence: Hell yes. The very Republicans who are anti-everything all got the vaccine and they all have doctors taking care of them. So the people that don't want to believe its real, that's their business. The conspiracy theorists who are far-right, are spreading false rumors about the vaccine to the public, but privately they are doing otherwise. Hypocritical games.

Don Douglas: I believe its still a threat. The variants are what we need to worry more about. And I believe until we get these things under control, we'll be at risk. What’s happening in India at the moment is a preview of what is to come to the western parts of the World. We have to be cautious. Vaccinated or not, we still need to adhere to the standard protocols that were in place even before vaccines came to the fore.

Janet Davis: I still think its a threat because we still have a new variant that is out now- the Delta. And we've been informed that the Delta variant is more contagious and even more severe that the others. Even persons that have been vaccinated are still stricken with this variant.

Dr. Beverley Mullings: I think that it's still a threat because people are dying. It's not as bad as before but its still active. We still need to have restrictions. At this point, you don't know who has it from who doesn't so its best for us to still protect ourselves, still do social distancing, still wear masks and sanitize because that's the best way to stop the spread. I also think that people should get vaccinated because that's a sense of prevention. I am vaccinated and I'm happy that I did it.

OPINION

Should Jamaican Prime Ministers Still Accept Privy Council Appointment The queen of England has given Jamaica's prime minister, Andrew Holness, one more postnominal title. Effective May 26 the country's leader was appointed a member of the UK Privy Council and should now be addressed as “The Most Honorable Andrew Holness ON, PC, MP Prime Minister of Jamaica.” Holness is expected to attend a meeting of the council at the “first convenient opportunity” to take his oath. Other Jamaicans to be given such honor include former Prime Ministers Sir Alexander Bustamante (1964), Hugh Shearer (1969), Edward Seaga (1981), and PJ Patterson (1992). Former chief justice Edward Zacca was also given the distinction in September 1992. Former Prime Minister Michael Manley was also invited to the Privy Council during his tenure as prime minister from 1972 to 1980, but, respectfully declined the invitation. But since Holness' appointment was announced, social media has been set ablaze with questions, concerns and consternation. What does this appointment mean for the prime minister and what will his duties be? How will it benefit Jamaica and its people, especially in light of Jamaica's position on a vexing issue with Britain, such as talks to remove the Queen as head of state, and obtain reparation for the institution of slavery. The Privy Council functions as a set of counsellors to the British Sovereign, known as “The Lords of her Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Council.” Appointed by the King or Queen on the advice of the government, the entire body is divided into committees. Their main duty is to advise His or Her Majesty on matters not delegated by the crown or those assigned to it by the British parliament. One of the more active committees is the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, it handles judicial act as the final court of appeal for Britain and many current and former commonwealth countries, including Jamaica. Persons who are given the opportunity to serve her majesty on the council are mainly

politicians including commonwealth prime ministers, cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, the cabinet secretary, leaders of large parties, senior parliamentarians and ministers. The heir apparent to the British monarchy, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of York and the Bishop of London, are all “sure picks” on the council. It is also customary for prime ministers of countries that have the monarch as head of state to be appointed. Now that Mr. Holness has been appointed, he will travel to England to “take office” after agreeing to the following: “You do swear by Almighty God to be a true and faithful Servant unto The Queen's Majesty as one of Her Majesty's Privy Council. You will not know or understand of any manner of thing to be attempted, done or spoken against Her Majesty's Person, Honour, Crown or Dignity Royal, but you will let and withstand the same to the uttermost of your power, and either cause it to be revealed to Her Majesty Herself, or to such of Her Privy Council as shall advertise Her Majesty of the same. You will in all things to be moved, treated and debated in Council, faithfully and truly declare your Mind and Opinion, according to your Heart and Conscience; and will keep secret all matters committed and revealed unto you, or that shall be treated of secretly in Council. And if any of the said Treaties or Counsels shall touch any of the Counsellors you will not reveal it unto him but will keep the same until such time as, by the consent of Her Majesty or of the Council, Publication shall be made thereof. You will to your uttermost bear Faith and Allegiance to the Queen's Majesty; and will assist and defend all Jurisdictions, Pre-eminences, and Authorities, granted to Her Majesty and annexed to the Crown by Acts of Parliament, or otherwise, against all Foreign Princes, Persons, Prelates, States, or Potentates. And generally, in all things you will do as a faithful and true Servant ought to do to Her Majesty. So help you God.”

Upon agreement the Jamaican Prime Minister will become the fourth Jamaican head of government to hold this office and will be required

to travel to Britain for meetings. But can the Jamaican Prime Minister uphold allegiance to the Queen while still doing so to his own country? The oath of allegiance for Jamaican government ministers says: “I,_______ , do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Jamaica, that I will uphold and defend the Constitution and the laws of Jamaica and that I will conscientiously and impartially discharge my responsibilities to the people of Jamaica. So help me God.”

Furthermore, Jamaica is now at odds with Britain because of the lack of interest from the latter about slave reparations money. A call that was made by former Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller from as far back as 2013 has gotten the same response from the British government in recent times; not interested. Strangely, Simpson-Miller, a woman who hailed from humble origins in rural Jamaica, was not appointed to the privy council during her tenure as prime minister. Jamaica's Culture minister, Olivia Grange said she “wants to petition Her Majesty for compensation for all the nation's citizens.” Grange further stated that, “We are hoping for reparatory justice in all forms that one would expect if they are to really ensure that we get justice from injustices to repair the damages that our ancestors experience.” Another question is, how can a Jamaican head of government fight for Jamaica, while simultaneously swearing to obey, and be a counsellor to, the queen and the British government? But the real question is how being appointed to the British Privy Council, and having the letters PC behind Mr. Holness’ name benefit the people of Jamaica at this time?

Haiti Installs New Leader as Nation Mourns Moïse Haiti's government installed a new prime minister on Tuesday, while officials mourned assassinated President Jovenel Moïse and arrested at least three police officers implicated in his killing. Designated Prime Minister Ariel Henry was sworn in to replace interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who assumed leadership of Haiti with the backing of police and the military after the July 7 attack at Moïse's private home, which also badly injured his wife and stunned the nation of more than 11 million people. “The task that awaits us is complex and difficult,” Henry said as he called for unity and promised to meet with various sectors in upcoming days to build consensus. “I'm from a school that believes in dialogue.” He also thanked “sister nations” that he didn't identify for their solidarity and expertise in the ongoing investigation as he demanded that all those responsible be brought to justice. Henry, a neurosurgeon and former Cabinet minister, has promised to form a provisional consensus government to lead Haiti until elections are held. He said he has already met with various unidentified actors as well as civil society and the private sector. He pledged to re-establish order and security and confidence in the government as well as fight corruption, make COVID-19 vaccines available to all, restart the economy and create a credible and transparent elections

system. Joseph spoke before presenting Henry as he also urged unity and and wished him much courage and determination while warning him: “You inherit a remarkable situation ... a political crisis without precedence... galloping insecurity, a morose and precarious socio-economic situation.” After the ceremony, Henry's new Cabinet was formally presented, with the ministers of justice, economy, finance, agriculture and others keeping their positions. Before Henry officially became prime minister, a crowd of international dignitaries and Haitian officials clad in somber suits sat under the shade of pink

and white bougainvillea in the yard of the Nation Pantheon Museum in downtown Port-au-Prince to commemorate Moïse, whose assassination left a political void. A large portrait of the slain president hung behind Joseph as he spoke to mourners. “The president is dead because of his political and social convictions,” he said. Joseph accused oligarchs and criminals of assassinating the president's character and then the president himself. He called on everyone to seize the moment as an opportunity to find a common purpose and durable, viable solutions.

The assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moïse will be buried on July 23, according to the Haitian Government. In an announcement on Friday government officials in Haiti said the funeral will be held in the city of Cap-Haïtien, where the 53-year-old former head of state was born. Mr. Moïse was gunned down on July 7 at his private residence by armed men, believed to be former Colombian army officials. A group of 28 foreign mercenaries, including retired Colombian soldiers, and two Haitian-Americans have been implicated so far. After a gun battle in the capital Portau-Prince, 17 were detained, some at the house they were using, others after entering Taiwan's diplomatic compound. Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph told a news conference Friday that the 63-year-old Miami-based Haitian doctor, Christian Emmanuel Sanon, is a mastermind of the plot and had “political objectives.” Joseph said 24 police officers attached to Moise's security detail were ordered to report for questioning, adding “this investigation will run its course. “If you want to assassinate me, come for me. The most important thing for me is the investigation,” he said. Moise's widow, Martine has returned to the Caribbean nation after being treated in Florida for wounds suffered in the attack. Martine Moïse was seen wearing an arm sling and a bulletproof vest after arriving by plane at Port-au-Prince airport on Saturday. In a tweet, a Haitian official said Mrs. Moïse had returned to the country to prepare for her husband's funeral this weekend. The government said the funeral will be a three-day affair beginning July 21. Books of condolences are now open at Haitian embassies and consulates for the public to sign.

Broward County “In The Danger Zone” Says Mayor as COVID Cases Rise By Sheri-Kae McLeod

As Florida remains open and almost all COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, the White House delivered sobering news to the Sunshine State last Friday. Some twenty percent of all new COVID-19 infections in the United States are in Florida. Steve Geller, the Mayor of Broward County, which has the second-highest COVID-19 cases in the state, registered his concern about the spike in cases at a recent press briefing. He says

“On June 1, we were at 5.1 cases per 100,000 population. By July 15th, it was 36.9. We are absolutely in a danger zone right now.”– Mayor Steve Geller

Broward County is now in the danger zone. COVID-19 hospitalizations in Broward County are also on the rise. According to Mayor Geller, most of the hospitalizations are among the county's unvaccinated residents. He said vaccine hesitancy and misinformation on the internet are still threatening Florida's quest to herd immunity. The Mayor also speculated whether or not foreign interests may be behind spreading fake news about COVID-19 in the United States. “This is rampant speculation on my part. But the misinformation on the internet is so bad and so prevalent, I'm starting to question whether that can happen by accident. I'm wondering whether this is not another foreign

nation trying to intentionally damage this country. Because I don't know what else could explain the amount of bold-face lies on the internet,” he said. Some 67 percent of Broward County's eligible population have already been vaccinated. The Mayor appealed to the remaining unvaccinated residents to protect themselves from the virus by taking the shot.

Florida Gov. Downplays State COVID-19 Spike Last week, Florida recorded one of the biggest COVID-19 spikes in the country. The Florida Department of Health reported over 45,000 new COVID-19 infections over the last seven days. UF Health hospital in Jacksonville also broke its record for most hospitalized Covid patients on Monday, with 126 new patients. But according to state Governor Ron DeSantis, the spike in cases is just a seasonal flux. “These things have a patten. We saw the pattern last summer. It's similar. I think it started a little later. I think people should just be prepared for that. It's a seasonal virus and this is the seasonal pattern it follows in the Sun Belt states,” DeSantis told reporters at a press conference on Monday. According to him, 75% of Floridians over the age of 50 have gotten a COVID-19 vaccine. And despite the spike in cases trending upward among unvaccinated residents, the governor says he does not support the push to make vaccines mandatory. He also does not want local leaders and medical experts to criticize those who do not take the shot. “I do not agree with some of these people, some of these quote unquote experts who lambast people and criticize them or say they're stupid or something,” DeSantis said. “That's not the way to reach folks, OK?”

ADVERTORIAL

A Rabbi, a Priest, and a Reverend Offer Perspectives on Cannabis Use Use of the cannabis plant as an herbal remedy and psychoactive drug was documented by ancient civilizations, but whether it was mentioned in the Bible has been a matter of speculation and religious perspective. This was the topic of discussion when three faith leaders and a layperson participated in a forum hosted by MMERI to discuss their views on cannabis as they relate to theology, medicinal and recreational uses, criminal persecution, and other points of interest. Rabbi Yaakov Cohen, lives in Israel and is the founder of Whole Kosher Services. He contends that you can find a reference to cannabis in the Bible if you're reading the Old Testament or Torah, and you know the Hebrew language. He says The Book of Leviticus, 30:20-24, mentions an herb called Q'anehBosm (also translated as Kaneh-Bosm). “Q'aneh-Bosm is the hemp plant that was used in anointing the oil of the temple vessels, the king and the high priest,” said Rabbi Cohen, adding that if you say the word quickly it sounds like cannabis. Herbs, the rabbi explained, are God's gift of healing. “We see that this herb that was once put down by so many in terms of the leadership of the government has now become a leading herb in terms of its ability to heal,” Rabbi Cohen said, referring to medical marijuana, a legal substance in Florida. Father Dustin Feddon, pastor of two parishes in the Diocese of PensacolaTallahassee, said 12th century mystic St. Hildegard of Bingen, was considered “one of our doctors of the church”. He says, 'she was

very much a believer that all of God's creation, especially plants and herbs, can be used for the health and wellbeing of all of God's creation and humanity.” Offering another faith-based perspective was The Rev. Dr. Lenny C.K. Marshall, pastor of St. Phillips AME Church in Tallahassee. He referred to the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 6:12, where it says, “that while everything is permissible for me, not everything is beneficial and I will not be mastered by anything.” He said, “so, while there may be medical benefits to the use of marijuana and maybe people find benefit whether it's for healing or recreational use, [it] ultimately comes down to the individual's right to have the choice as to what they will use.” While each cleric provided unique views on cannabis, they held the same beliefs on the matter of legal vs. illegal use: All laws governing cannabis use — medicinally or recreationally — must be obeyed. The trio also characterized the criminalization of marijuana as an orchestrated

Father Dustin Feddon

attempt to persecute people of color. However, Ben Temer said his own experience as a White teen arrested for possession gave him a different view of the enforcement of marijuana laws. Mr. Temer is the founder of the nonprofit The International Jewish Cannabis Association, a South Floridabased group that seeks to educate the Jewish community on the benefits of cannabis. “They don't care about the color. They don't care about your background. They don't care about who you are or what you're doing,” he said, referring to the criminal justice system. What it comes down to, he said, is whether you have the resources to fight the legal system. “You may get in trouble for the use of marijuana regardless of the color of your skin,” responded Rev. Marshall, “but the numbers in black communities are way higher for the use of the substance.” The topic of incarceration is one Father Feddon knows all too well as the executive director of Joseph House in Tallahassee, which

Reverend Lenny Marshall

he describes as “a community of the formerly incarcerated.” “I know many, many men that are sitting in cells right now for the discovery of marijuana in their car, and then that leads to an escalation of other things. What I have seen is that one, it is unjust, no matter if it's the law or not. Martin Luther King Jr. has taught us that we can have unjust laws. There is no justice in criminalizing addictions and the use of alcohol or drugs.” It will take education, Rabbi Cohen and Mr. Temer injected, to change long-held negative beliefs about marijuana. Rabbi Cohen said educating people will help show that cannabis is not an evil drug. “It has a lot of uses. Once we put it into that perspective that'll be the beginning of the redemption of the world,” he said.

TRAVEL. LIFESTYLE. CUISINE.

Staycations Summer Vacationing Right Here In South Florida We are now in the middle of Summer, and the traditional vacation time is here. This year, with the state opening up and activities returning to some sense of normalcy after the pandemic, it could be more expensive for families to make the drive out of South Florida to northern resorts and attractions, or afford air fares out of town and the country. However, there are incredible attractions right here in South Florida, which families can visit more economically, and have a grand time. So get ready for your Summer Staycation.

THE MIAMI SEAQUARIUM Located at 4400 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne, The Miami Seaquarium, is one of the oldest and more popular tourist attractions in South Florida. This is a water park consisting of wonderful sea animals, exhibits and entertainment appropriate for visitors of all ages. This water-filled wonder features local underwater creatures such as manatees, as well as animals from around the world, such as orca whales. For those who love to be splashed, the orca whale shows have the splash zone seats clearly identified to ensure a refreshing time. Miami Seaquarium offers plenty of unique experiences, including the heart-pounding experience of swimming with the dolphins. One of the more famous dolphins at the Seaquarium was Flipper, of television fame.

JUNGLE ISLAND Located at 1111 Parrott Jungle Trail in Miami, Jungle Island, is one of the most beautiful, fun locations in the city. The island is home to dozens of species of animals, including lemurs, gibbons, orangutans, parrots, macaws and a liger - cross between a lion and a tiger does exist. Visitors will also find a wide species of plants in an enchanting setting. On weekend,s there are entertaining animal shows. Permanent exhibits include a walk-through replica of the Florida Everglades. And the Jungle Island VIP Safari Tour allows visitors to get close and with the animals on the island.

Families can visit the park for a day of fun, or if you want the experience more, stay at several affordable nearby hotels.

THE MIAMI ZOO The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens, commonly called Zoo Miami is located on SW 153d Street in southwest Miami and is the largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida and the only sub-tropical zoo in the continental United States. At this popular zoo, you will find a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia, and Africa, representing a broad mix of species unlike other zoos in the US. The managers of the zoo have taken effort to group the animals according to their geographic origins. The trees, foliage and even the soil in some of the exhibits, are matched as closely as possible to the native habitats of the animals. Zoo Miami occupies almost 750 acres and houses over 3,000 animals, representing over 500 different species. Of this population, more than 40 species are classified as endangered. The zoo also houses more than 1,000 species of trees, palms and other plants, and over 100 special exhibits.

THE VIZCAYA MUSEUM & GARDENS Located at 3251 South Miami Ave in Miami, The Vizcaya Museum & Gardens on Biscayne Bay is probably the most popular spot for photo sessions for engaged couples and wedding parties. Millionaire James Deering property built the property, modelled after an Italian Renaissance style rural villa, as a winter home. The entire estate was completed in 1922. The main building, the museum, with its regal and opulent 15th to 19th century furnishings, art and interior design, still has complete relevance and style to this day. The house is surrounded by gardens and visitors may enjoy the café and gift shop on the property. The scale of the estate is immense. Aside from the large main villa, there are over 10 acres of formal gardens with numerous fountains and sculptures. Their museum shop and cafe are very interesting - not typical for a popular museum.

cruelty to a child, assault occasioning bodily harm, and unlawful wounding in relation to the child’s mother. The child had complained of not feeling well and was eating slowly when Bennett became angry and beat him with a stick. Nashaun became unresponsive shortly after and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Opposition Leader Mark Golding said that banning corporal punishment would be a symbolic step to tackling the problem, noting that this was a trend worldwide. But he noted that Jamaica is a “deeply Christian country” embracing the biblical admonition that parents should not ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’. Golding said that this is still considered to be “sound precept in many homes”. “Many of us have grown up where some minor forms of punishment of a physical nature may have been imparted without any obvious lasting damage – I don’t know whether banning it in the form of criminalising it so that parents face criminal sanctions if they slap their child if that would be well accepted across the nation – I don’t know,” Golding said. For the first half of this year, the National Children’s Registry received 1,465 reports of physical abuse, representing 26 percent of the 5,561 reports of child maltreatment received over the period. Prime Minister Holness has called for an open and honest conversation about the effects of corporal punishment on children. He said that the National Council on Violence Prevention in its research into causes of violence and mechanisms to prevent it, has already highlighted corporal punishment as one of the critical preventative factors that the nation must address. The council is slated to submit an evidence-based report with recommendations on corporal punishment in a few weeks to the government.

“I felt like we had a good crop of (male) athletes for the last couple of Olympics, so for me, it really bothers me to know that this is where we are right now, where most of the world is ahead of us,” he said during an interview with Reuters. The Tokyo Olympics begin this Friday. Bolt predicts that the Jamaican women will be the ones to score most of the medals for the country. He says he is also confident that Jamaican Tajay Gayle, the current world Champion in the Long Jump, will also score a gold medal. Leading Jamaica's Olympic team this year is the fastest woman alive, Shelly-Ann FraserPryce, who will be competing in her final Olympics. Usain Bolt said he believes that no female athlete will be able to beat her in the women's 100 meters. “I hope she doesn't put too much pressure on herself going in because she's in shape, she's in form, all she has to do is go out there and execute and it shouldn't be a problem,” he said. He also said he would be honored to share the achievement of three Olympic sprint gold medals with Fraser-Pryce. The Olympics will run from July 23rd to August 8. The sprinting events will begin on July 30th.

St. Vincent Warnings the other tests. “You get the first one free. I think they even give you the second one free. But you decide you are not taking the vaccine, for whatever reason and I take the vaccine, I'm a taxpayer; I have to pay for it (your test). It cost nearly US$10 to do the antigen test, for each one.” Gonsalves told radio listeners that he is aware of a hotel construction site with 170 employees that was closed for a week after two workers tested positive for COVID-19. “And they didn't know whether there was going to be an outbreak and they said, 'Listen, you come vaccinated, you don't have to go and do the test. But if you decide not to take the vaccine, you have to do the test.' And the employers said you have to do the test at your expense.” Prime Minister Gonsalves said that 20 percent of the people in the country have taken the vaccine, adding “they are taxpayers. Why they must pay every single week for your test when you choose not to take the vaccine? I raise the question of fairness in that regard.” He said that there are about 50,000 workers in the country and presuming that 10,000 of them have been vaccinated, the other 40,000 will have to be tested regularly. “So every Monday morning, we have to pay for 40,000 or close to that; that's

Trinidad Reopens Prime Minister Rowley also announced that as of Monday, another aspect of the re-opening of the economy will take place with food establishments being allowed to conduct businesses but only on a takeout and drivethrough basis. But he warned the population to ensure that they have to adhere to the protocols including wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands frequently and that there is to be no inhouse dining or consumption on the premises.

US$400,000 every Monday morning. That is a million dollars. “Now, that can't be fair. And people want money so that they can keep body and soul together. You can have your choice not to take the vaccine but if the employer says you have to take the vaccine or you have to take the test otherwise you can't work at my place because I have an obligation as an employer for a safe and healthy work environment. “That's under the law. And we are currently dealing with the procedures and so forth for certain categories of state employees, both in the government service and also in statutory bodies,” Gonsalves said, noting that for example, people who work on the cruise ship pier, airport employees, medical personnel, and Customs workers should be vaccinated. “So if you don't want to take the vaccine but you are going to take the test, you can't ask the employer to give you a test every Monday morning or every two weeks to pay approximately US$10 for each of these antigen tests. “They cost money. We don't get them for free. Remember I tried to talk the home truths to the population and some people are not listening. I'm begging you please, take the vaccine,” Prime Minister Gonsalves said.

He said based on the success of the reopening, the government would be looking at further openings to take effect by the end of the month. The government is also hoping that with its ramped-up national vaccination program, by mid-August, the economy should be well on to being fully re-opened and with the authorities being able to announce plans for the reopening of schools. Rowley said that he is also hoping that

discussions with the United States would bear fruit soon and that Port of Spain is anticipating that Washington would be providing the Pfizer vaccine, which has been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for children 12 years and over. He said if those vaccines become available, they will be used only for children of High School age so as to ensure that that segment of the population is also vaccinated against the virus.

Jamaica’s Dream Weekend Gets Greenlight from Government Jamaica's biggest summer party series, Dream Weekend is on for 2021. The announcement was made on Thursday, July 15 on the official Dream Weekend page. The five-day party series will run from August 5-9 at select locations along Negril's seven-mile beach strip on Norman Manley Boulevard in Westmoreland. Three weeks ago, Prime Minister Andrew Holness had announced that promoters of large scale events could apply for permission by sending an application to the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports which would then review the application to see that it meets the safety requirements, and if satisfied, it would forward the application to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). Holness said ODPEM would then consult with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Municipal Corporations, the police, fire and all other relevant authorities, and when they are satisfied that the application for the event to be held at the specified place and time has met the threshold and the standards, it would be approved. While event organisers are still finalising plans for the various events, it was revealed that veteran dancehall artistes Bounty Killer and Beenie Man are booked for the popular party Yush. Following the staging of Dream Weekend in Jamaica, the part series will then move to New York for its August 27 to 29 staging.

WHO Leader Says Virus Risk Inevitable at Tokyo Olympics By CnweeklySports The Tokyo Olympics should not be judged by the tally of COVID-19 cases that arise because eliminating risk is impossible, the head of the World Health Organization told sports officials Wednesday as events began in Japan. How infections are handled is what matters most, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a speech to an International Olympic Committee meeting. “The mark of success is making sure that any cases are identified, isolated, traced and cared for as quickly as possible and onward transmission is interrupted,” he said. The number of Games-linked COVID-19 cases in Japan this month was 79 on Wednesday, with more international athletes testing positive at home and unable to travel. “The mark of success in the coming fortnight is not zero cases,” Tedros said, noting the athletes who already tested positive in Japan, including at the athletes village in Tokyo Bay, where most of the 11,000 competitors will stay. Teammates classed as close contacts of infected athletes can continue training and preparing for events under a regime of isolation and extra monitoring. Health experts in Japan have warned of the Olympics becoming a “super-spreader” event bringing tens of thousands of athletes, officials and workers during a local state of emergency.

Crawford Triple, Husbands Double Deadlines Fort Erie Card Veteran Barbadian Juan Crawford logged a triple while fellow countryman Christopher Husbands notched a double, as Caribbean jockeys won seven of the eight races on Tuesday’s card at Fort Erie.

English Premier League Team Aston Villa Eye Reggae Boy Bailey English Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Everton are lining up moves for two Caribbean wingers currently plying their trade with German outfit Bayer Leverkusen, according to United Kingdom media reports.

Bailey

Villa are preparing to make a swoop for Reggae Boy Leon Bailey, while Everton are closing in on a deal to sign Demarai Gray, who is eligible to play for Jamaica and is being targeted by the island’s football authorities. Kingston-born Bailey, 23, who has two years left on his current deal and can play on either flank, is valued at between US$34 million and $41 million. He just enjoyed his best season so far for Leverkusen, scoring 15 goals and recording 11 assists in 40 appearances while helping the Bundesliga side qualify for the Europa League. Bailey, who made his Jamaica debut in 2019 and is currently competing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, joined Leverkusen from Genk in 2017 and has repeatedly been on the radar of a number of clubs in England. Villa’s head coach Dean Smith is said to be confident the Midlands outfit can complete a deal for Bailey, who has been previously linked with Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Italian side AC Milan. Bailey is currently on duty with Jamaica at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States, and was an unused substitute in their 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica on Tuesday night in Orlando, Florida.

The reigning champion at the southern Ontario oval, Crawford rode winners in race one with 9-1 bet Executive Retreat, race two with 3-1 chance Strategic Vision and race three with 2-1 choice American Driven. He finished last in his two other rides, in race five with near-favourite Souper Deputy and in race eight aboard 12-1 chance Flatoutonamission. Husbands, meanwhile, was forced to wait until the day’s last two races to taste success, first winning with 8-1 chance Sealed With a Kiss over six furlongs and then following up with favourite Stardust Kitten going 6-½ furlongs. Elsewhere on the card, Guyana-born Sunny Singh won a five furlong dash in race five with favourite Charlie’s Game while Jamaican Kirk Johnson paired with another favourite Kozy Cat to capture race six over 6-½ furlongs. Husbands leads the campaign with 20 wins from 58 outings for an outstanding win rate of 34 per cent while Singh is nine back in second. Crawford has, meanwhile, mustered five wins from 27 rides. The 42-year-old raised the curtain on the programme when he made virtually all the running aboard the five-year-old chestnut gelding Executive Retreat to edge out the three-year-olds and upward by a head over 5-½ furlongs. Yallhaveaniceday and Amnesty both were threats early and when they faded, Crawford had to fend off a late charge from Tobruk with Johnson in the irons. Crawford produced a similar win next up, going gate-to-wire with five-year-old bay gelding Strategic Vision, to narrowly get the better of the three-year-olds and upward over six furlongs. Favourite Dynamite Karma chased Strategic Vision to the turn but lacked rally in the stretch and Hard n’ Sweet, with Singh aboard, came from off the pace with a strong run but Crawford kept his gelding to task. Crawford’s third straight win on the card came over a mile and 70 yards when he combined with six-year-old gelding American Driven to beat the three-year-old and upward maidens by half length. He stalked the leaders from third before grabbing the lead on the far turn and keeping his challengers at bay during the stretch run.
